WOODS DROPS THE ‘POM’ ON BARRETTS In the days leading up to the Barretts March Sale of Selected Two-Year-Olds, consignor Eddie Woods touted hip 37 , a colt by Pomeroy--Leah=s Angel, as one of the best horses he=s trained all year. When the straight-talking Irishman speaks, buyers usually listen, and last night, they lined up to take a shot at the strapping colt. Stonestreet Sta- bles rep John Moynihan, sitting in front in the sales pavilion, proved gamest, just outlasting EQB's Patti Miller to land the horse for a sales-topping $625,000. AEddie has been telling me about this horse since February,@ said Moynihan. AWe bought [MGSW] Kantharos [Lion Heart] from him last year, and we=re excited about this horse. He has a great mind, and it looks like you can go right on with him. And Pomeroy=s turned out to be a pretty good stallion. He=s got a cou- ple of nice runners down in Florida.@ By Boundary, sophomore Pomeroy is the sire of a pair of horses who won seven-furlong graded events at Gulfstream: GII Hutcheson S. hero Flashpoint and GII Forward Gal S. heroine Pomeroys Pistol. He is also the sire of Positive Response, runaway winner of the John Battaglia Memorial S. A son of Leah=s Angel (Caller I.D.), last night=s sales topper is a half-sibling to the SP Tontine Too (Con- certo), as well as Grade III winner Expect an Angel (Valid Expectations). Bred in Florida by David Robbins, the colt was hammered down to Woods=s Quarter Pole Enterprises for $75,000 at the OBS August Sale last summer. At Friday=s breeze show, the bay went an eighth in :10 1/5 and had an especially good gallop-out. Moynihan was sitting alongside Scott Blasi, assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen, and Moynihan confirmed the horse would join Asmussen=s string this year. Moynihan was on the phone with Jess Jackson throughout and, while the winemaker was resolute, his agent admitted to being a bit surprised by the price. AHe was expensive,@ Moynihan said. AI didn=t really expect him to bring that much. But he was kind of a star out here.@ Woods also sold hip 16 , a colt by Speightstown-- Enjoy the Moment (Slew=s Royalty), who went to Patti Miller, agent, for $150,000. The colt had worked an eighth in :10 flat Friday. Barretts Topper cont.

Asked if he thought he=d brought the sales topper toBarretts March, Eddie Woods admitted, "As the dayswent along, no, I didn=t. But when I left home, I leftthinking I had one of the best, if not the best, horse I=vetaken to a sale this year. And yes, he sold like the besthorse I brought to a sale this year. But it was quite asurprise to me. I thought whoever went north of$300,000 would own him. But that=s the beauty of thething, when you get two people hooking up like that. Itwas fantastic." Despite the big success, Woods said it=s still toughout there no matter how hard you work. "Unless youhave the likes of those really, really elite horses that thebuyers really, really want, it=s hard. I=m hoping the AprilSale in Ocala is in a different vein. But with the selectsale, if you don=t have exactly what they want, forgetit."

From the Bayou to Barretts, Heberts Bring the Bling… Tens of thousands in the Gulf area were affected bythe devastation caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, including Hebert Bloodstock's Jeff Hebert. A lifelonghorseman, Hebert had left a 22-year career as a trainerto own and operate a mini-casino with his father on theTexas/Louisiana border. With just 50 machines, thecasino was a far cry from the 1,500 machines nearbyDelta Downs could boast, but it was popular amongtruckers and locals. In 2005, however, the worst hurri-cane season in U.S. history took hold, and when Ritahit the Bayou State a month after Katrina, Hebert andhis father found themselves with a building so severelybattered that, after 17 months, it still remained shut-tered. Finally, the men decided to settle with the insur-ance company and sell the property. "My father retired, and I had to get a job," Hebertsmiled. Along with his wife, Kathleen, an accomplishedhorsewoman, Hebert decided to return to horsesfull-time. Instead of training at the track, however,Hebert opted to focus on yearling-to-juvenilepinhooking, and in 2007, Hebert Bloodstock brought itsfirst draft to Barretts March.

The group included Polonius (Broken Vow), who wentto B. J. Wright/ Bluegrass Industries for $150,000.Polonius won his debut at Hollywood Park, and tookthe Pasadena S. at Santa Anita two starts later. He wasan 11-1 chance in the 2008 GI Santa Anita Derby, finishing unplaced to Colonel John (Tiznow), but cameback in his next start to win the GIII Will Rogers S. forWright and trainer Michael Pender. In 2008, the Herberts returned to Barretts March andsold a colt by Stormy Atlantic to Carrol Castille for$250,000. Named Southern Region, the horse won the2009 Grand Prairie Turf Challenge S. at Lone Star Park. With the economy reeling in 2009, the Hebertschanged the game plan. "That year, we came out toHollywood Park with nine 2-year-olds, and just ranthem," Jeff Hebertexplained. "We soldsome that couldn'thang with the Cali-fornia horses, andraced some of theothers. It went well.We sold a horse toJohn Sadler throughthe claim box namedRanger Heartly [LostSoldier] for $32,000.We recommendedthe horse toJohn--he's a nice guy--because we were fixing to goback to Louisiana, and he dropped a claim in for him.We got beat the day they took him, but John ran himback for $32,000 and won." Ranger Heartly addedvictories in starter allowance and allowance company, then made the big jump up to take the 2010 CaliforniaDerby for Sadler and an ownership group that includedHerb Alpert. "It was a nice run for them," said Hebert. After passing on the March Sale again last year, theHeberts decided to make the trek out for 2011. Lastnight, they were rewarded when hip 87, a fast-lookingson of Too Much Bling--Surf Tide (Valid Expectations)went to Kirkwood Thoroughbreds for $185,000. Cont. p3

The colt, a bargain $15,000 TEXAUG yearling, rippedthrough an eighth in :10 flat and, according to Hebert, galloped out a quarter in :20 4/5--which would haveearned him the bullet. The gray colt, named Surf Bling, was produced by a half-sister to SW Moon Kid (LemonDrop Kid). Based in Vinton, Louisiana, the Heberts operate a145-acre farm. "We have 35 stalls, a training trackYwejust do it all ourselves right there," said Jeff Hebert. The couple typically breaks and trains 30 to 35 year-lings a year, most of whom will wind up at juvenilesales. "We'll race a few, but we'd rather sell," Hebertexplained. "We breed a couple a year, just because theLouisiana-bred program with the slots money is sogood. But we prefer to buy short yearlings and year-lings. We buy a double handful every year. We loveshopping Keeneland and OBS--we'll hit all thesales--and just look for value. We'll buy as correct ahorse as our money will let us, but as far as veterinarywork, as we all know, they have to be clean. We bringthem home and hope they can stand up to the rigors ofthese sales. By the time we get to March, after doingour round-robin sprints, they develop a pecking order, and so we know which ones to bring out here andwhich ones to send to different sales. My wife does allthe selection of the yearlings; she's the eyes of HebertBloodstock; I'm the mouth." The Herberts now have another successful BarrettsMarch in the books, but with plenty of life left in thejuvenile sales season, there will be no rest for the cou-ple. AWe already have 13 yearlings on the farm who willbe going to next year=s sales,@ said Hebert.

EQB Nabs Four-Pack... It=s safe to say few buyers shopped Barretts Marchharder than EQB=s Patti Miller. With her trusted poochin tow, she was a constant presence on the back-stretch in the day=s leading up to the auction, and lastnight, EQB was just as ubiquitous. Miller, who ownsEQB with founder and president Jeff Seder, signed forfour horses overall, and was the direct underbidder onthe night=s $625,000 Pomeroy topper. Cont. p4

EQB cont.

EQB=s dearest purchase was hip 72, a colt by Tapit--Sawgrass Express (Roman Diplomat) from CiaranDunne=s Wavertree Stables, who went for $340,000.The gun-metal gray, a half-brother to SP Daisey Lee(Grand Slam) and produced by a full-sister to MGSWRoman Envoy (Roman Diplomat), breezed an eighth in:10 1/5. Miller declined to name the client EQB wasrepresenting. AWe do high-speed film analysis and heart profiles, and though he had a few little things he didn=t quite doright back at the barn, he did them right on film,@ saidMiller. ASo I had a lot of confidence in him. I thought hewas a special Tapit; I really liked this horse. He jumpedthrough all the hoops, and hopefully, he continues on.@ EQB also purchased a pair from Eddie Woods=s con-signment. They were hip 16, a colt by Speightstown--Enjoy the Moment for $150,000; and hip 50, a filly byKafwain--Myreeg for $65,000. The team was alsoresponsible for hip 52, a filly by Harlan=s Holiday--Naropa (Pleasant Tap) from the consignment of BeckyThomas=s Sequel Bloodstock (Thorostride video). Miller said the purchases were made for differentclients. Asked if they were shopping for a particulartype of horse at Barretts, she said, AWe like a horse thatwill go two turns, but sprinters are nice, too.A

Of being the underbidder on the Pomeroy colt, Milleradded, AIt=s tough knocking heads with [John]Moynihan. I thought he was an exceptional horse. If hewasn=t by Pomeroy, who knows that he would havebrought. But, you know, the Pomeroys have been run-ning, and he was a fantastic individual. John knowswhat he=s looking at.@

When I visited Airdrie Stud to see the stallions in thesummer of 2008, I inspected Indian Charlie, Harlan=sHoliday, Badge of Silver, Flashy Bull, Friends Lake,Include, Stevie Wonderboy and the newly arrivedBrother Derek. I also looked at Gone West=s sons ProudCitizen and Istan, the latter having recently completedhis first season. I must admit, though, that a third sonof Gone West, Canadian Frontier, received a much morecursory look--a quick glance as I walked past his stall. The Jockey Club=s figures suggest I was by no meansthe first (or the last) person to have ignored CanadianFrontier. Although he covered 65 mares in each of hisfirst two seasons, his book fell to 39 mares in his thirdyear, and he had covered no more than 45 mares in2008. Worse was to follow. Only 11 mares headed hisway in 2009, followed by 23 last year. However, it=s a safe bet that this inexpensive stallionwill be setting personal-best figures this year, as the 43named foals in his second crop include those excellentfillies No Such Word and Hilda=s Passion. No Such Wordmade such significant progress throughout 2010 thatshe notched up five stakes victories, including the GI Gazelle S., and Hilda=s Passion is proving similarlyprogressive. She was recording her third graded suc-cess when she easily outpaced the opposition in Satur-day=s GII Inside Information S. So why did Canadian Frontier struggle for attention?Part of the explanation must be that he was just one ofnumerous sons of Gone West available in Kentuckywhen he started out in 2005. At an initial fee of$10,000, he wasn=t in the same price bracket as thelikes of Elusive Quality, Grand Slam, Mr. Greeley andSpeightstown, all of whom commanded fees between$100,000 and $40,000. However, he faced stiff oppo-sition on his own doorstep from Proud Citizen, whowas priced at $17,500. Whereas Proud Citizen was aGrade II winner good enough to finish second in theKentucky Derby and third in the Preakness, CanadianFrontier=s record didn=t meet some of the requirementswhich go to make a fashionable stallion.

He hadn=t raced at two, and failed to reach the firstthree in a pair of starts at three. Although he won oneof three starts at four, he didn=t enjoy a full campaignuntil he was five, when he made up for last time withfive victories. All three of his stakes successes cameover six furlongs, a distance he covered in 1:08.97 inthe GIII Bold Ruler H. Proud Citizen, with more precoc-ity and two-turn appeal to his name, has inevitablyproved the more popular of the two.

Canadian Frontier carried the colors of Mrs. JoyceRobsham to his stakes successes, having initially racedfor Godolphin, both in the U.S. and Dubai. Of course,he isn=t the first late-blossoming sprinter to have madean impact as a stallion--two others who didn=t becomestakes winners before they were five being Forest Wild-cat and Speightstown. There is no denying that Canadian Frontier is bredwell enough to make a successful stallion. Along with fellow Grade I sires Lemon Drop Kid, Stormy Atlantic,Stormin Fever, Cape Town, Mutakddim, Offlee Wild,American Chance, Patton and Glen Jordan, CanadianFrontier is out of a daughter of the great Seattle Slew. His dam, Borodislew, was no ordinary daughter of the1977 Triple Crown winner. A Group 3 winner overseven furlongs in France at three, Borodislew lateradded Grade II and Grade III victories over a mile and asixteenth while carrying the colors of Marshall Naify. She sold for $750,000 at Naify=s dispersal in 2000. Canadian Frontier=s second dam Breath Taking estab-lished herself as one of Nureyev=s fastest daughters--and earned a Timeform rating of 119--with a pair ofgroup wins at around six furlongs in France. BreathTaking no doubt inherited much of the speed that hadbrought her dam, Cap d=Antibes, victories in two ofAustralia=s premier sprints--the Lightning S. andNewmarket H.

Canadian Frontier=s bloodlines seem to be standinghim in good stead. No Such Word is the first black-typeperformer among her dam=s first eight named foals andHilda=s Passion is also the first black-type performer forher dam Executricker, but from a smaller sample offour. Executricker, a winner on turf at four, is bySadler=s Wells=s son El Prado. Gone West had a disap-pointing record with broodmares by Sadler=s Wells, butEl Prado mares are shaping up quite well with GoneWest=s sons. There is another graded winner--LadyDigby--by Grand Slam and the champion sprinterSpeightstown also has a stakes winner, making threestakes winners among the first 28 foals by sons ofGone West out of daughters of El Prado. Executricker=s yearling price of $150,000 was areflection of a strong female line. Hilda=s Passion=sfourth dam Lost Virtue started a family that has donesterling work in recent years, principally for Juddmonte.Lost Virtue is also the third dam of Twice Over, one ofthe leading hopes for this week=s Dubai World Cup, andher other descendants include the Group 1 winnersPassage of Time, All At Sea and Banshee Breeze.

The New York Times article, March 18, about theThoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF), illuminatedmany troubling issues in animal rescue and retirement. While I have not served on the board of the TRF, I docontribute money to it and have confidence in the peo-ple involved. The majority of charities today are struggling withreduced funds in a down economy. Those of us whogive to the foundation should realize in the currentenvironment some people are cutting back, so those ofus who can, need to give more. I will double my contribution to the ThoroughbredRetirement Foundation, as both a show of support tothe well-intended people who work hard every day, andfor the horses whose humane care and lives dependupon our generosity. I've been in racing and breeding for more than 48years. Most racehorse owners are responsible. Whentheir horses no longer race, they retire them to a farmor work with adoption and retirement programs. How-ever, like some pet owners who fail to meet their hu-mane obligation, some horses must be rescued andthen responsibility falls on all the rest of us. Let's not rush to judgment about the TRF. They arepeople who are trying to do the right thing. We hopeJoe Drape's piece will serve the purpose of galvanizingand motivating all participants in the proud sport ofhorse racing and move us onward and upward. Sincerely, Earle I. Eastern Tent Caterpillar Hatch in Central Kentucky: (Edited press release) Experts report that eastern tentcaterpillar eggs have begun hatching in CentralKentucky. While it is too early to tell what 2011 levelswill be, populations have been gradually increasing overthe past several years. According to Lee Townsend,University of Kentucky College of Agricultureentomologist, the newly hatched eggs, which were laidlast June, are easy to identify by the small holes tinylarva chew as they exit. In about two weeks, the tentsshould be about the size of a baseball and easy to spotin trees. Townsend urged horse farms to check wildcherry and related trees for eastern tent caterpillaractivity to determine whether management isnecessary. If control measures are needed to reducenumbers, steps should be taken before the caterpillarsleave their trees. AThe small caterpillars will stay nearthe egg mass for a short time before moving to feed onexpanding leaves. Eggs will continue to hatch throughearly April,@ Townsend said. Controlling eastern tentcaterpillars is vital to area horse farms, as UK researchhas strongly linked the caterpillars with outbreaks ofMare Reproductive Loss Syndrome, which can causelate-term foal losses, early-term fetal losses and weakfoals. During the 2001-2002 MRLS outbreak, anestimated 30 percent of that year=s Thoroughbred foalcrop was lost. The state suffered an economic loss ofapproximately $336 million in all breeds of horses.Studies since the 2001-2002 outbreak subsequentlyhave revealed that horses inadvertently will eat thecaterpillars and the caterpillar hairs embed into thelining of the alimentary tract. Once that protectivebarrier is breached, normal alimentary tract bacteriamay gain access to and reproduce in sites with reducedimmunity, such as the fetus and placenta. Fetal deathfrom these alimentary tract bacteria is the hallmark ofMRLS. UK entomologists recommend that unless horsefarm managers have been aggressive in managingeastern tent caterpillars, or removing host trees, theyshould keep pregnant mares out of pastures borderedby cherry trees or other hosts for the next severalweeks. Townsend offered the followingrecommendations for controlling moderate to largecaterpillar populations if horses cannot be moved toavoid possible exposure. AFoliar sprays for caterpillarcontrol can be made when tents are about the size of abaseball. Another option is the injection of trees with asystemic insecticide by commercial pesticide applicatorsor arborists. Regardless of the treatment used, it isimportant to revisit the sites in about five days toassess caterpillar activity,@ he said.
