AL ZAROONI cont. from p1

AThese test results endorse the swift action andmeasures taken by the BHA in this matter,@ Paul Bittar, chief executive of the BHA, said. AWhatever theoutcome of his appeal before the independent AppealBoard, the gravity and scale of the infringementswarranted Mahmood Al Zarooni being removed fromcontrol of the yard as quickly as possible. We welcomethe news that Saeed bin Suroor=s horses testednegative and this clears the way for him to now takecharge of Moulton Paddocks.@

Following the handing out of hiseight-year suspension, Al Zarooniannounced that he is to appeal thelength of the ban and that isexpected to be heard in late June. Adam Brickell, director ofintegrity, legal and risk for the BHA,added, AWe will not be taking anyseparate action in respect of theseadditional positive results whilst Mr.Al Zarooni=s appeal process ison-going. In the meantime, thelatest findings from HFL SportScience will form the subject of

further interviews as part of the BHA=s continuinginvestigation. From the outset, one of the aims of theinvestigation, in addition to trying to understand theenvironment within which such serious breaches cameto be committed, has been to identify what measuresare needed to ensure the yard operates in accordancewith the rules in future. The findings will be sharedwith Godolphin and will also assist the BHA with regardto the future licensing of the yard.@ Bin Suroor, whose Farhh (GB) (Pivotal {GB}) providedthe boys in blue with a welcome boost when winningSaturday=s G1 Lockinge S. at Newbury, commented,AI=m happy that my stable is clear. I said before, theBHA can come any time they like, I=ve got absolutelynothing to hide. Ever since we started, everything hasgone in the books. I knew 100% that they wouldn=tfind anything and now everybody else knows thesame.@ Bin Suroor will take over the training of theremainder of the Moulton Paddocks horses who areclear to continue racing. AIt will be very busy, but it willonly be temporary,@ he said. AIt will be just for a fewweeks until we get somebody else in.@ Godolphin=s Racing Manager Simon Crisford added,AIt is obviously very disappointing that seven furtherhorses have tested positive for stanozolol. These resultshighlight why H. H. Sheikh Mohammed took thedecision to lock down the stables at Moulton Paddocksuntil every Godolphin horse in training at Newmarkethad been tested. All of Saeed bin Suroor=s horses havetested clear and we are working with the BHA to puteverything back in order at Moulton Paddocks.@

Held up early with only the detachedGlobal Bang behind, he followed the move ofGodolphin=s Tawhid as that rival struck the front 1 1/2furlongs from home and the eventual runner-up made adramatic move out wide. Mastering that duo with 100yards remaining, the outsider was driven out to assertas Global Bang=s earlier exertions took their toll. Thiswas the second high-profile success in Germany for thePantall stable after Beatrice (GB) (Dr Fong), anotherwho was seemingly exposed in her native Francebeforehand, took Cologne=s G3 Schwarzgold-Rennenearlier this month, and owner Guy Heald was alsosurprised by the outcome. AThedecision is based on the outcome of the [GI] Preakness, and the fact that, on Sunday at Belmont Park, our horseworked a very snappy half in [:47.49], indicating goodenergy and enthusiasm,@ said Dogwood President CotCampbell. AThe blinkers that jazzed him up in the Derbycome off and we anticipate no problem with pace ordistance. Only11th in a six-furlong handicap at Naas on Wednesday,Ask Dad does not boast the credentials of his G3 Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas trial-winning stablecompanion, and Murtagh told PA Sport yesterday,AAndrew [Tinkler] was keen to have a runner in therace, which is why he=s supplemented Ask Dad. It=s arace that=s been lucky for him in the past and he=s beenplaced in it before, so he said we may as well try topick up some placed money. Fort Knox has come out ofhis last race well and he=s been doing everything nicely.Crucially, he=s had no hiccups since then. AHe was drawn in the cheap seats andcould never get competitive, but at least he came backwithout having had a hard race so we have decided totake him to Ireland, where the stiff mile should suit himwell. The Curragh=s uphill finish should also play to thestrengths of Van der Neer, who was staying on betterthan anything when third to Dawn Approach in ourGuineas.@ Other than Bolger, Hannon, O=Brien andMurtagh, the only other trainer represented is AndrewOliver, who has left in team Valor=s G2 Futurity S.winner First Cornerstone (Ire) (Hurricane Run {Ire}).

Three days ago, we saw a legendary trainer recordhis 14th Triple Crown success after a 13-year hiatuswith a colt partnered by a comeback jockey whose lastTriple Crown successes came in 2001. In suchextraordinary circumstances, there=s every chance thatthe personalities will steal the show from the actualhorse. Fortunately the colt in question--Preakness heroOxbow--also has a colorful back story, even if it pales alittle alongside those of his legendary trainer D. WayneLukas and veteran rider Gary Stevens.

The fascinating part of Oxbow=s story dates back tothe late 1980s, when the late Cecilia Straub-Rubensbought a couple of yearlings, paying $50,000 for a SeattleSong filly in 1987 and$72,000 a year later for a sonof Relaunch. The story goesthat Straub-Rubens was soexcited after the purchase ofthe well-connected Relaunchcolt that it threw her into atizzy, hence the colt=s name. Cee=s Tizzy was bred to bepretty good. With a tally of86 stakes winners, includingBreeders= Cup winnersSkywalker and One Dreamer,Relaunch proved himself one of the best stallion sons ofIn Reality. Then there was Cee=s Tizzy=s second damTizna, a Chilean import who landed three Grade I racesduring a highly distinguished American career. There was no shortage of stamina in Cee=s Tizzy=spedigree, as Relaunch=s exploits included a closesecond to John Henry in the GI San Luis Rey S. over amile and a half and the versatile Tizna included theLadies H. over a mile and a quarter among her majorsuccesses. Caulfield cont. It was therefore no surprise to see Cee=s Tizzy tacklea mile and a quarter in the 1990 GI Super Derby. Bythat time he had won three minor races in very fasttime in California and he justified his shot at the bigtime. After leading for a mile at Louisiana Downs, helost second place to Unbridled by only a neck, eventhough it transpired that he had suffered acareer-ending knee fracture in the process. AlthoughCee=s Tizzy managed only six starts, his fourgrandparents collectively notched a total of 130 starts,so he was qualified to sire progeny more durable thanhimself. Straub-Rubens= other yearling, Cee=s Song, provedmore durable, but less talented. She won only once, ondirt, during an 18-race career, and was also secondeight times on the turf. However, she was agranddaughter of the great Seattle Slew. Although hersire Seattle Song wasn=t a great success as a stallion, with only one Grade I winner to his credit, he had beengood enough to win at the highest level in France (Prixde la Salamandre) and the U.S. (Washington D.C.International). As a non-graded winner, Cee=s Tizzy started hisstallion career in 1991 at a bargain-basement level andhe was to spend his first nine seasons at fees rangingfrom $1,500 to $2,500. His crops during this timeaveraged little over 30 foals, but he had one fairlyconstant companion in Cee=s Song. Over an 11-yearperiod, the mare produced nine foals to Cee=s Tizzy andshe was carrying the last of the nine, Oxbow=s damTizamazing, when she was sold for $2.6 million atKeeneland=s 2001 November Sale. Of course Tizamazing--who was sold for $1 million asa yearling--was by no means the only celebrity amongthe nine siblings. Her immediate predecessor, Tizdubai, justified her $950,000 price tag by taking the GII Sorrento S. Another full sister, Tizso, failed to winin two attempts, but has made ample amends bybecoming the dam of Paynter (Awesome Again), thecolt who looked a threat to the best of his generationwhen he landed last year=s GI Haskell Invitational S. Ofcourse, severe illness then threatened to end the colt=slife, not just his career, before Paynter staged a trulyremarkable recovery.

Cee=s Song=s daughters had a lot to live up to.Budroyale, the second of her foals, had been claimedon his debut, but went on to build earnings of over$2.8 million, with a fair slice of that coming from hissecond to Cat Thief in the 1999 GI Breeders= CupClassic. Then Budroyale=s younger brother Tiznow wentone better in the 2000 Classic, before following up in2001. Tizbud, the last of the partnership=s four colts, also became a stakes winner. In trying to unearth the source of Cee=s Song=ssuccess, I delved through her female line. Her fourthdam Blue Canary, born in 1952, had theattention-grabbing record of having raced 127 timesover a seven-year period, for an average of 18 startsper year. Perhaps she would have been retired earlierhad her connections known that her youngerhalf-brother, Crimson Satan, was to become 1961=schampion 2-year-old. Incidentally, the progeny of theirdam, the Chilean-bred Papila, provide a reminder of atotally different era. Despite his class, Crimson Satanpacked 58 starts into four seasons, while hishalf-brothers Red Red Robin, Cardinal Sin and SportsReporter respectively raced 72, 89 and 92 times. To get back to Oxbow, it is remarkable that he andPaynter are both by Awesome Again. With sisters astheir dams, they are brothers-in-blood. The incentive forpairing these sisters of Tiznow with Awesome Againsurely stems from the fact that their grandsire,Relaunch, figured as the broodmare sire ofGhostzapper, Awesome Again=s most outstandingwinner. Ghostzapper=s arrival to stand alongside his sire atAdena Springs in 2006 can=t have made things anyeasier for the 1998 Breeders= Cup Classic winner. Bythat time Awesome Again=s fee stood at $125,000 andit was to rise to $150,000 in 2008, on the strength ofhis having sired four winners on Breeders= Cup day(Ghostzapper, Wilko, Round Pond and Ginger Punch). Awesome Again was originally slated to cover the2009 season at the same fee but, with the start of theeconomic downturn, his fee was lowered to $125,000.Even so, he attracted only 67 mares, for 57 live foals. His owners responded by slashing his fee to $50,000 for the next three seasons and the ployworked, at least numerically. It will be fascinating to see whether these cheapercrops can boost Awesome Again=s stash of Grade Iwinners, which now stands at 13 from his first 11 crops. There is absolutely no reason why theyshouldn=t, as he spent his first five years at $50,000and it was those first five crops which produced 10 ofhis Grade I winners, the exceptions being Game OnDude, Paynter and Oxbow. The next difficult question facing Oxbow is whetherhe has enough stamina for the mile and a half of the GI Belmont S. Although his penchant for racing in thefront rank won=t make his task any easier, he is in witha chance. Paynter attempted to lead throughout in lastyear=s Belmont and failed by only a neck to withstandUnion Rags= challenge. Then there=s the fact thatTiznow, a brother to Oxbow=s dam, sired Belmontwinner Da= Tara, while Deputy Minister, sire ofAwesome Again, also had a Belmont winner, TouchGold, among his best representatives.
