Dissenters before Martin Luther

• John Wyclif-late 1300s • Jan Hus-early 1400s

• Both attacked the excessive power of the Pope. Hus was burned at the stake for heresy.

Reformation in Germany (HRE)

• The Hapsburgs, (ruling family since the 10th century) remained loyal to the Catholic church.
