Liturgical Calendar Quirks by Fr. Kerschen
We’re in the thick of Ordinary Time, which for us in Kansas often coincides with the dog days of summer. Still, it would be sad to trudge through these liturgical weeks without giving due attention to the quirkiness of the current chunk of the church calendar.
You will already know that we are in the middle of reading through the sixth chapter of the Gospel of John, aka the Bread of Life Discourse, aka the sweet spot of Catholic Eucharistic apologetics. Every third year, the 17th through 21st Sundays of Ordinary Time venture away from the Gospel of Mark in order to detour through this important Gospel chapter.
The way we pray shapes the way we believe which shapes the way we live. Lex orandi, lex credendi, lex vivendi. Alongside annual celebrations of Holy Thursday and Corpus Christi, these �ve weeks make our liturgical grounding in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. Those who have ears ought to hear.
This year, however, comes with a little extra spice. The 20th Sunday of Ordinary time falls on August 15th, meaning it gets trumped by the Solemnity of the Assumption. So next week - instead of Jesus’ strong response to the question “how can this man give us his �esh to eat?”–
