6 Excellence and Opportunity for All
ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR
Australians all let us rejoice,
For we are young and free;
We’ve golden soil and wealth for toil;
Our home is girt by sea;
Our land abounds in nature’s gifts
Of beauty rich and rare;
In history’s page, let every stage
Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.
Beneath our radiant Southern Cross
We’ll toil with hearts and hands;
To make this Commonwealth of ours
Renowned of all the lands;
For those who’ve come across the seas
We’ve boundless plains to share;
With courage let us all combine
To Advance Australia Fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing,
Advance Australia Fair.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT I would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we as members of the Tumbarumba High School community meet today; I also have pleasure in acknowledging and paying my respects to elders – past, present and emerging, including those who are students at our school. I also extend sincere thanks to Preston Hussell and Toby Duffy for their delivery of acknowledgement of country at today’s Presentation Day Assembly. When we commenced the 2021 school year, we had all hoped we would be blessed with a “normal year” to counter the disruptions endured throughout 2020. However, as I am sure you will all agree, 2021 presented us with new challenges linked to the COVID-19 pandemic and the enforcement of associated rules and regulations. Our students and staff rightly deserve be acknowledged and commended for their on-going resilience and capacity to adapt to those challenges. Once again, staff adapted to the delivery of remote learning and our students and their parents and carers also embraced the multi-faceted challenge of a lockdown and learning from home.
Our HSC students undertaking major works in Visual Arts and Industrial Technology – Timber accessed specially organised workshops to ensure that major works were completed and submitted. New timetables were also developed so that Year 12 students could attend lessons and not fall behind. Special staff shifts were implemented so that we did not exceed the strictly monitored limit of five (5) staff on site at Tumbarumba High School during the lockdown period. This requirement created some funny memories of 2021, as I remember sitting in the gutter outside the school grounds equipped with a laptop computer and mobile phone, so that technically we did not breach the five (5) staff on-site rule.
Once Level 3 schooling re-commenced, our students were restricted to allocated playground areas and sporting activities based on cohorts. Assemblies and much-anticipated excursions and inter-school sporting events were cancelled. Our year advisors and class teachers did a sterling job monitoring student wellbeing and keeping in contact with our students as they worked remotely. Formal examinations for our seniors changed quite radically as students were supervised in their homes via Zoom rather than in a conventional examination hall. We really appreciated the cooperation and maturity of our great students and staff during these times, especially in terms of compliance with social distancing and face mask or face covering wearing. This was not the case in all high schools in New South Wales, as I learned of high schools of nearly one thousand students in which only a handful of students would readily comply with the face mask recommendations. The outstanding majority of our students cooperated – which, I feel, reflects an uncompromising respect for fellow students and consideration for the health and wellbeing of the wider community.
In 2021 Tumbarumba High School was fortunate to see a significant upgrade of its grounds when Ms Rebekah Pholi successfully attained funds through the K-12 Rural and Remote Careers Grant. The drab area between our library and the 100s block was transformed into an impressive native garden featuring a traditional yarning circle. The dedicated efforts of formers students of our school, including Mr Glenn Molkentin and Mr Callum Lonergan, and alsoMr Nick Davies were much appreciated. The generosity of the Snowy Valleys Council, Elliotts Landscaping (Tumut) and Mr Geoffrey and Mrs Karen Daniel added to the overall sense of pride and community this project cultivated. Moreover, engagement with our local Aboriginal elders, Uncle John and Aunty Lorna, ensured that the actual positioning of the entrance into the yarning circle observed Aboriginal customs and faced the sunrise. The naming of the outdoor learning space as the Gudja Gudja Garden embraced the local Aboriginal language and has made the project even more significant. An HSC graduate of our school, Miss Monica Bowdler, who has only recently completed her course at the University of Wollongong, was commissioned to develop a brilliant Powerpoint presentation on the
8 Excellence and Opportunity for All
project’s history. Sadly, the subsequent acts of unwarranted vandalism during the Term 3 school holidays were disheartening; but they ultimately galvanised both community support and collective outrage.
2021 marked a range of changes to the ranks of our teaching staff: Mrs Megan Finnimore was appointed Deputy Principal in Term 4 and is to be congratulated on this well-deserved promotion; Mr Bruce Norton retired from his Maths positions after decades of devoted service to the DoE; and Ms Tanya Hempstead retired from her leadership role as Head Teacher English-CAPA after decades of dedicated service to rural schools. In the course of the year, we also saw our Teacher-Librarian, Ms Tracy Allen and our great part-time Science Teacher, Mrs Bevlyn De Beer leave the school. Miss Deeyara Pillay and Mr Michael De Battista, our budding new Science teachers, assumed positions in the school’s Science Faculty. Ms Samamtha Campbell has joined our school as a part-time School Counsellor, and quickly developed a great rapport with students, staff and parents. Mr Bede Richards was engaged by the school at a Student Support Officer (SSO) in 2021 to address student wellbeing issues, and has already proved a tremendous asset to our students and parents. We were also fortunate to appoint Mr Andy Klavins to the DCO role at our school, and he has been a tremendous asset to our school and ensured that our IT resources were upgraded and operating. This support was very much appreciated as the school embraced on line learning during the Term 3 lockdown. This year also marked the return of popular teachers, namely Mrs Hayley Williams and Mrs Vanessa McGrath, after their respective stints of maternity leave. In Term 3, Ms Jodie Sturgess and Mrs Leanne Bowdler both left the school after a number of years of dedicated service. Some other last-minute staff changes were being ratified of the time of the Presentation Assemblies, and they will be reported to students and parents in due time.
In 2021 the school was fortunate to implement a new COVID Intensive Learning Support Program (ILSP) in Terms 2-4 with Mrs Sharnelle McGee at its helm. We were able to engage the expertise of former THS students, Ms Alex Crane and Mr Tye Hussell, who have worked with small groups of students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 to address literacy and numeracy needs. This learning program will continue in 2022 and we look forward to consolidating students’ skills so that they continue to thrive in their high school studies. Despite the disruptions of 2020 and 2021, we have been pleased by students’ results in the 2021 NAPLAN which revealed significant growth and improvement in students’ writing skills which far exceeds the state DoE and SSG averages. This is a hard won achievement of which all teaching staff and students are proud. During 2021 our school’s Aboriginal Student Support Teacher, Ms Corrine Hill facilitated cultural experiences with local elders and supported our Aboriginal students with scholarship writing workshops and other educational opportunities.
We upgraded and improved a number of the physical spaces within the school in 2021. A new well-lit learning space, which we have named the Learning Hub, was built in the former girls’ change room. This airy learning space for small group support will also function as a homework centre once COVID regulations are relaxed. The creation of a purpose-built Distance Education room in the library has been readily used by students. This facility has enabled the school to afford a wider curriculum to our senior students, which now includes Economics, Beginners Italian, Chemistry and Music, through the Distance Education mode of delivery. Additional lap top computers have been acquired – and these were issued to students to support regular and remote learning. The Room 207 teaching and learning space has been significantly upgraded with painting, new desks and booths to facilitate cooperative learning. Special thanks are extended to Ms Joanne Donovan for her leadership with the upgrade of Room 207, the Common Room and also the Woodwork Room. A donation by our local IGA shop and the school’s P&C enabled the school to purchase and install a new set of COVID-compliant bubblers for our students to use.
9
Our school canteen has also endured its fair share of disruptions in the 2021 year with COVID-19. Our original Canteen Manager, Mrs Angela Fairlie, assumed another position at the end of Term 1, and we able to engage the services of Ms Sharryn Allen. Our students have had access to a great array of quality food stuffs and in 2021 the canteen was formally accredited with Health Canteen Certification. Our General Assistant, Mr Peter Bell, whose building expertise and great problem-solving skills continue to amaze us, constructed a fantastic new uniform storeroom and a new meeting room near the Deputy Principal’s office.
I would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank the students of Tumbarumba High School for your efforts in this most challenging year. The recipients of academic, cultural, sporting and special awards and commendable certificates are to be warmly congratulated on their efforts and application in 2021. I hope that you have realised that our school is one the genuinely encourages and acknowledges the maxim: Excellence (that is personal excellence) and Opportunity for All – regardless of whether it is a regular year or one characterised by challenges and obstacles as was the case in 2021.
In closing, I would like to acknowledge the great and committed executive teachers (both substantive and relieving), teachers, SASS staff and cleaning staff who ensured that health directives were observed and continuity was maintained in our students’ learning and schooling experiences. As we commence the modified Interest Electives program of 2021, enjoy time with your peers – make new friends, make new connections which will support you during your time at school and beyond. As you embrace the 2022, which I hope will be a “normal school year”, strive to do your best – embrace challenges, enrichment tasks, academic and sporting competitions and other opportunities that will develop your knowledge, skills and confidence which will ultimately promote a sense of belonging within our very special school community.
In closing, on behalf of the school community, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe and wonderful holiday period – which will leave you all deservedly rested and relaxed and therefore ready to strive for your best in 2022.
Mr Michael Blenkins

10 Excellence and Opportunity for All
SPORT REPORT 2021 2021 at Tumbarumba High School has seen continued enthusiasm and achievement with students participating in a range of sporting activities and competitions, despite another challenging year Throughout the year, the school community has maintained an excellent attitude towards learning new sports and developing teams to represent in school competitions when available. These sports were limited compared to previous years, but our students still participated eagerly and demonstrated a competitive skill set. Tumbarumba High School has been represented at the school, Zone and Regional levels in sports ranging from Swimming to Athletics, Cross Country, Touch Football, Netball, Basketball, Rugby League and League Tag.
This year, we have seen many individual achievements in the sporting arena. It began with several Swimming records being broken at our annual Twilight Swimming Carnival. Congratulations to Noah Meek who broke Tom Vogan’s record from 2011 in the 14 years 200m Freestyle event, Jack Vogan’s record from 2008 in the 50m Butterfly event and William Vogan’s record from 2018 in the 14 years Individual Medley event. Similarly, Caitlin Proctor broke Kate DeAble’s record from 2017 in the 16 years 200m Freestyle event and Molly Bourke’s record from 2019 by 50 seconds in the Individual Medley event. Deegan Lesniak is also congratulated for breaking Noah Meek’s record from 2019 in the 12 years Individual Medley event. The annual staff vs student race proved to be the most challenging for the teachers this year. Unfortunately, the students from Parkes house group had a range of very talented swimmers and won this competitive race.
The Open boys relay team, consisting of Daniel Kopecny, Roy Smith, Alexander Gollan and William Vogan, along with individual swimmers: Edward Smith and Deegan Lesniak were the outstanding performers of the year, qualifying for State Swimming in Sydney.
Another sporting arena that saw some great achievements this year was the Athletics Carnival. In 2021, Tumbarumba High School had great participation and house spirit, with Parkes taking out this event also. Great performances were seen through a variety of age groups, with the following students breaking Tumbarumba High School records. Jessica Clarke broke the 12 years High Jump record from 2007, previously held by Darcy Craig and Jesse Reid. Akia Wilson broke the 13 years High Jump record from 2006, previously held by Tayla Bennet. Sky Kyter broke the 15 years High Jump record from 2020, previously held by Caitlin Proctor. Edward Smith broke the 12 years High Jump record from 2006, previously held by Robert Hartnett. Deegan Lesniak broke the 12 years Shot-Put record from 2006, previously held by Dalton Shore. Deegan Lesniak broke the 12 years Discus record from 2006, previously held by Robert Hartnett. As a tradition the THS staff run a relay race against the student’s house groups. 2021 was no different for the staff, to keep their winning streak to beat the students in their relay race.
Once again, Tumbarumba High School hosted the Southern Slopes Zone Cross Country event. Excellent achievements were seen by: Deegan Lesniak placing 2nd, Angus Thomson placing 4th, Edward Smith placing 6th, Wyatte Metcalf-Salter placing 2nd, Roy Smith placing 3rd, Alexander Gollan placing 3rd, Hannah Wooden placing 6th and Caitlin Proctor placing 5th in their respective age groups. Congratulations to Sky Kyter, who placed 1st in 15 years girls’ event and received the Southern Slopes Zone Cross Country champion for her age group.
Steven Houting is also congratulated on his representation of the Riverina at the CHS Lawn Bowls State Championships as a team of 8 at St Johns Park in June 2021.
Outside of school, students continue to be involved and achieve in many sports at a representative level, as COVID-19 permitted.
All students are to be congratulated for continued participation in sport. Those who have represented the school are role models to other students. Your sportsmanship, integrity and
11
effort has been excellent and is a credit to you. With continued enthusiasm and support, 2022 looks likely to give rise to more student representatives. Good luck and enjoy your sport. S.Skeers Sport Coordinator
