It is likely that other areas on the Aegean coast have likewise been opened up. As with all changes in the law, it may take some time for the details to trickle down to local authorities, and my advice is to check with a diving school before using your own equipment. A fine of 43,000 Euros (to avoid detention of the vessel) and a lawsuit (to recoup the money) was reported to have resulted for a German yacht, despite the fact that the coastguard was unable to find any evidence of foul discharge on inspection of the yacht’s bilges and surrounding water. Page 277 SIDETemple ruins on the headland S of the harbour areconspicuous. The ancient harbour is now accessibleand has a concrete quay running around it. There isunderwater ballast in places near the quay so bows-to is probably safer. Depths 2–3m inside. Usuallycrowded with gulets in summer but you may findroom. The prevailing afternoon breeze pushes someswell in through the narrow entrance, moreuncomfortable than dangerous.

Water on the quay. Fuel can be delivered.

Page 278Note Between Side and Alanya there are unlit buoysand floating pontoons up to 2M off the coast. Theydon't appear to be permanent, and may be for fishfarming purposes.

The substantialbreakwaters and white light structures (no lights) arealso conspicuous.MooringThe quay is not yet completed but there is plenty ofroom to moor stern or bows-to with a long line or toanchor. Depths range from 7m in the entrancedown to 3–5m nearer the rough quay. Whenfinished the harbour should provide excellentshelter.GeneralWork continues on shore and although not officiallyopen yachts and local fishing boats already use theharbour. The busy main road to Alanya runs pastthe harbour, but it is still a quieter alternative to theharbour in Alanya.

Page 279 ALANYA36°32]·23N 32°00]·36E WGS84MooringThe pile pier to the E of the inner harbour is nowused for ferries and cruise boats. The inner harbourhas been substantially enlarged. The E breakwaterhas been extended by some 200m to the ENE andthe shoreside quay has also been extended and

widened. The quay is usually full with gulets andtripper boats but there is plenty of room for yachtsto anchor within the harbour in 5–6m. The entranceis not lit, and at night care should be taken in theapproaches as large fishing boats sometimes raft upto the E of the breakwater. The breakwaterextension has already suffered some damage fromstorms, and although shelter is reasonable in theharbour, the new harbour to the W of Alanya shouldprovide better all round shelter.

Page 280 OFFSHORE FISH FARM36°18]·04N 32°13]·50E (S corner)About 5M NW of Gazipasa a large fish farm hasbeen established. Yellow buoys mark the limits andby day it is possible to pass between the enclosuresand the coast. By night it is not well lit and shouldbe given a good offing.

GAZIPASA36°16]·05N 32°16]·61E WGS84A harbour has been built on the N side of KaleBurnu immediately N of the river mouth. Workappears to have halted with no finished quay andwinter storms have dislodged some of the concreteballast of the outer breakwater. It is difficult to knowif the development has been abandoned or if it ismerely a glitch in the progress.MooringDepths of 5–8m in the approaches have beenreported, but care should be taken as a bar appearsto be forming off the breakwater. Mostly 3–5·5mdepths in the harbour but rocks and ballast off thebeach and breakwaters reduce depths to <1m inplaces, particularly off the S side. Small fishing boatsuse the mole on the N side of the harbour and largerboats anchor and take a line ashore or to thebreakwater. Should provide good shelter from theprevailing winds. FacilitiesNo water, electricity or lights. You may havedifficulty finding something to tie a shore line to, butthe local fishermen seem amiable enough. A mini-market is nearby and small hotels and restaurantsrun along the beach in the summer. The ruins ofAncient Selinus sit atop the bluff on the S side of theriver.
