ADDRESS:—1, VICTORIA TERRACE EAST, AND WILSON STREET, BARNARD CASTLE. ASSESSMENT AND VALUATION. BARNARD CASTLE RURAL DISTRICT ARRANGEMENTS. Barnard Castle Rural Council on Wednesdi I received from the Clerk (Mr T. W. Bainbridg- a resume of the duties which will fall upon I as the rating authority under the new Rati: and Valuation Act which comes into force the district next April. The Council, he sa 9 would undertake work which had hither • been done separately in twenty-two diflerc.:? parishes by as many sets of overseers, and fact there would be a revolution. T h e n< valuation would be done before April, 19! and the aim would be to arrive at a unifoi basis of valuation in each district. There w no truth in the rumour which had got abro that Baruard Castle would have to share .. paying the rates of other districts in the count There would be a clearing away of the H ) overseers, and from what he had heard tl • overseers would not be sorry. The new scherj would tend to the betterment of rating at I rate collection, as the work would be done bv people without local influence or interests who would not let sentiment enter. Lists of ra • defaulters would be regularly submitted at ". proceedings would have to be taken again ' defaulters. Each parish would have a lev* uniform rate, except where there was a speci : rate for sanitary purposes. Mr P. Widdas, in the absence of M r H . L Fife, Chairman of the committee, said it was proposed to appoint a chief ratine accountant aud assistant to the Clerk at a salary of £200. who would supervise the rate collectors, and a junior rates assistant and accountant at a salary of £150 ; both being whole-time employees under the direction of the Clerk. Five ratiDg officers and collectors would be appointed for the following districts: 1. Forest and Frith and Newbiggin. Salary, £30 and registration fees. 2. Middleton and Eggleston. Salary, £75 and fees. 3. Langleydale and Shotton, Woodland and Cockfield. Salary, £100 and fees. 4. Gaiuford, Winston, Lpgleton, Langton, and Headlam. Salary, £75 and fees. 5. Staindrop, Cleatlam, Raby and Kever- stoue, Wackorfield. Hilton and Morton Tiumouth. Salary, £76 and fees. These officers are to be advertised for. The Clerk would be allowed £124 per annum in order to provide the clerical assistance he would require. He moved the adoption of the report. Colonel Beadon seconded. Mr Lowson; What is the additional cost compared with the preseut ? The Clerk : £829 against £614—an increase of £215. The report was adopted. COCKFIELD NURSING. An effort to augment the funds of the Cock- field Nursing Association had a most successful termination on Saturday evening, December 18th, in the Assembly Hall. Under the tutelage of Mr and Mrs Backhouse, the former of whom is Head Master of the C.E. School, and the teaching staff, the children of that school gave a splendid and efficient rendering of the operetta, " Little Snow White." Throughout the whole piece the children acted with a simplicity aud freedom from embarrass- ment which was an added charm. Word- perfect iu all their parts and entering into the spirit of the play they delighted the crowded audience by their faithful portrayal of this play aud for a time imbued their elders with the spirit of youth. The dresses of the children were lovely aud reflected credit upon the " wardrobe mistresses." The dramatis persona; was as follows-- Snow White, Mary Fuller ; Queen of Poppyland, Mary Atkinson ; Prince of Arcadee, Jennie Hall; Niobe (bis sister}, Phoebe Walker ; Podgie (keepei's son), Harry Glasper; Seven Dwarfs, Alf. Sams, Lawrence Stirk, John Fuller, Harry Carter, Herbert Clark, John Kirkbride and James Sparks ; Chief Baron of Arcadee, John Green; Lady of Shoestrings, Emily Littlefair; Lady of Kerchiefs, Esnie Brydou; Lady of Fan, Elizabeth Clarke; Lady of Tresses, Kathleen Liusley. Action songs aud dauces were given by the iufants aud the faithful reproduction of woodland fairies aud fairy butterflies were a special feature of a splendid programme. Miss Alderson brilliantly accompanied the children. Junior Imperial League. Baruard Castle Junior Imperial League on December 10th discussed the subject," How can members of the Junior Imperial League best serve their couutry ? " Interesting speeches were made by Miss A. Hewitson, Miss B. Walton aud Mr A. W. Kidd. A " games night" was held on December 17th, there being between 30 and 40 members present. The games were arranged by Miss L. Key and Miss F. M. Brown.
