• Gmail is a Webmail provider from Google that you can use to send and receive email

• Before you can use Gmail, you need to create a Google account

• Gmail calls the default mail folders labels• The Inbox label is assigned to messages you have

received, and is generally referred to as the Inbox• The Starred label is assigned to messages that you

have flagged by clicking the star next to the message sender

• The Sent Mail label is assigned to messages that you have sent

• The Drafts label is assigned to messages that you have written but have not yet sent

• Gmail uses the Spam label to mark messages that it identifies as unsolicited

• Google uses the Trash label to mark messages that you have deleted

Receiving and Opening a Message

• When you receive new mail, messages that you have not opened are displayed in bold, and messages that you have opened are displayed in regular font

Viewing and Downloading an Attached File

• When you receive a message with an attached file, you can view and download the attachment for as long as you store the message

• When you delete the message, you delete the file attached to the message

• When you detach a file from an email message and save it on a disk or drive, it is just like any other file that you save

Replying to and Forwarding Messages

• To reply to a message, click the Reply link at the bottom of the message body to reply only to the sender, or click the Reply to all link to reply to the sender and other people who received the original message (those email addresses listed in the To and Cc text boxes)

• In Gmail, this organization of messages is called a conversation, or a thread

• To forward an existing mail message to another user, open the message you want to forward, and then click the Forward link at the bottom of the message body

Filing and Printing an Email Message

• You can use Gmail to file your email messages by category by using the default Gmail labels or labels that you create

Deleting an Email Message and Label

• When you no longer need a message, you can delete it by selecting the check box to the left of the message in the Inbox, and then clicking the Delete button

• You can delete a label by clicking the Settings link, clicking the Labels link, and then clicking the remove link for the label

• When you delete a message or label, you are marking it with the Trash label

• The default setting for Gmail accounts is for the system to delete all messages marked with the Trash label after 30 days

Maintaining Your Gmail Contacts

• You can open the Contact Manager by clicking the Contacts link on the left side of the screen

• You can use the Contact Manager to create a group of contacts

Exploring Other Google Services

• In addition to providing you with a free Gmail email address, your Google account also provides you with other free Web-based services that you can use to share and edit documents and photos

• Google Docs is Google’s file-sharing service• Google’s photo sharing service, called Picasa, provides

a large amount of storage space to upload photos
