Deutsche Welle reporters are there to provide blanket coverage of the world’s largest public film festival. There’ll be special Berlinale editions of Arts.21 on 22 and 29 February, as well as daily festival bulletins on Arts and Culture, DW News and The Day. In 2020, for the first time, the Berlinale will take place under the dual direction of Carlo Chatrian and Mariette Rissenbeek. The pair take over from Dieter Kosslick. The co-directors have announced a host of innovations – let’s see what that means for this exciting event on the Berlin calendar! DOCFILM Looted Art in the Third Reich Jewish art collections – often assembled over generations – were systematically confiscated after the Nazis came to power in Germany. By highlighting a number of select cases, the documentary Looted Art in the Third Reich shows how the art market profited from the predicament of many Jewish collectors after 1933. The film focuses in particular on the fate of a collection belonging to Ernst and Agathe Saulmann, amassed at the private home of the Jewish textile manufacturer in the Swabian Alps. Before their escape into exile, they asked their long-time art dealer Julius Böhler to sell the collection. But while Böhler lined his own pockets from the sale, Ernst and Agathe came away with nothing. In 1938, the couple were taken to the Gurs internment camp in France. To this day, only a few pieces from the Saulmann collection have been returned. Starting Mon 10 February 01:15 EUROMAXX Insect Art They crawl, fly and sting – and many people don’t like them at all. But for Cedric Laquieze, insects are hugely fasci- nating creatures. The Amsterdam-based artist breathes new life into dead beetles and butterflies in his own very novel way. Sports in the Thuringian Forest Anyone traveling to Oberhof is usually going there for the sport. This is where you’ll find Olympians rubbing shoulders with the leisure crowd. Oberhof is a resort in the Thuringian Forest. At an altitude of around 815 meters above sea level, it provides opti-mal conditions for almost any kind of winter sport: cross-country skiing and ski slopes, biathlon, snowboarding, ice-rafting and luge. There’s even a winter cycling track. And the very brave can try bobsleigh; hurtling down into the valley on the world champion-ship ice track with an experienced pilot. All this gives Check-in presenter Lukas Stege the opportunity to test his athletic ambitions.

Soyalism It stinks in North Carolina. The foul smell is caused by pigs, a huge number of pigs. There are eight to 10 million of them, packed into row upon row of stalls that look almost like towns from the air. Their emissions are polluting and threatening the environment in the US federal state. Pig farming in North Carolina is just one of many examples of highly-industrialized farming practices. The documentary film Soyalism follows the factory farming trail all over the world – from the US to Brazil, Mozambique to China. It shows how large companies are tight-ening their grip on the market, how smallholders are feeling the squeeze, and how vast tracts of land are being given over to large scale production.

The Sound of Freedom What does the German folk song “Die Gedanken sind frei” have to do with “A Punk Prayer” by the Russian band Pussy Riot? What traditions are reflected in the Free Nelson Mandela movement or Beyoncé’s pop feminism? Since the French Revolution at the very latest, social upheaval and political songs have gone hand in hand. The two-part doc-umentary The Sound of Freedom tells the story of songs that became iconic signature tunes – from the “Marseillaise,” through “Bella Ciao” to “I Will Survive.”

A Question of Style In February, Arts.21 devotes a special edition to fashion. The magazine show-cases young fashion designers from Africa, presents sustainable avantgarde designs made from using recycled materials and reports on the New Yorker Iris Apfel, still celebrated as a fashion icon as she approaches 100. The culture magazine also looks back at the Golden 20s, a time when women in Europe were entering the workplace, enjoying free-dom and independence and casting off the rigid corset of social expectation.
