Meet the Artist! Some artists enjoy success. And some art-ists change the world. Arts.21 meets four such people to explore what drives them in their work. On 5 August, the Australian opera wizard Barrie Kosky explains how he has revived musical theater and turned Berlin’s Komische Oper into an audience magnet. The second episode focuses on the queen of performance art, Marina Abramović. On 19 August, Arts.21 reporters interview John Neumeier. The dancer from the US has influenced the ballet world like no other. In the final episode, photo artist Wolfgang Tillmans talks about the perfect picture and the soundtrack to his life.

#Germany Decides What concerns German voters the most? DW journalists Nina Haase-Trobridge and Sumi Somaskanda want to find out ahead of the nation’s parliamentary elections. They’re trav-eling the length and breadth of the country this summer, to Dresden among other places. Just how strong are the right wing populists in the city that hosts the Pegida rallies? How open is Europe? They move on through the Czech Republic to Wegscheid. In the fall of 2015, thousands of refugees passed through the German-Austrian border here every day. What’s life like now in this small community? Are refugees still welcome? On their tour, the two reporters meet young right wingers, managers, politicians as well as the politically disillu-sioned. On 24 September these people will decide whether Chancellor Angela Merkel re-mains in office, or whether her challenger Martin Schulz will take over. The reportage #Germany Decides – Election Road Trip assesses the mood of the nation.

More than Football Happiness and sadness, hopes and fears, relief and disappointment – on the soccer field, many experience these emotions to an extreme level. From August there’s a new show by the makers of Kick off! – Kick off! Life takes a look at the world beyond the ball. Every week, the magazine’s production team talks to German and international stars about their profes-sion, their motivations and their wishes. Engaging reports from all over the world take an in-depth look at soccer life – from the Chinese super league, on the amateur pitches of India and in conversation with hooligans in Frankfurt. Each edition covers a different issue: fans, love, money, homeland, failure and happiness. But Kick off! Life is more than just a TV pro-gram. All content is also published on digital platforms and in social media.

Dirty Tricks Air pollution in African cities is catastrophic, with smog a daily fact of life. This is making people ill, with frequent cases of asthma and bronchitis. But there are far more cars on the roads in Paris or London than in Lagos or Dakar. The main reason for the poor air quality in African cities is the high sulfur content of gasoline and diesel – with sulfur limits up to 300 times greater than in Europe. A situation that’s being exploited by crude oil traders. Swiss commodity companies are selling substandard oil to Africa legally and importing high quality fuel to Europe. The documentary Dirty Tricks – Selling Toxic Fuel to Africa draws back the veil on this shady business.

Battling Baldness A full head of hair reflects vitality, health, youth and sexual attractiveness. That’s why for many people losing hair is a catastrophe. The problem mainly affects men, but women also suffer hair loss with advancing age. Frequently, a person’s genes are to blame. Hair loss can also be caused by hormonal changes, stress, an unbalanced diet or immune disorders. But all is not lost – there are things we can do. These days, early therapies can prevent baldness. These are effective as long as the hair loss is not genetic. But this is the case for many men. When women lose their hair this can often cause great distress. Few of the hair restoring products on the market deliver on their promises. Hair transplants are however quite prom-ising. Now that more and more celebrities are opting for this kind of beauty therapy, the sector is booming. In Good Shape watches a hair transplant taking place and presents other therapies to counter hair loss.

5,000th Program Euromaxx is marking a special anniver-sary on 2 August, with a celebration of its most memorable stories and moving mo-ments. Highlights from 5,000 programs on culture and lifestyle in Europe. Euro-maxx takes the viewer along to the top lifestyle events – to the red carpet at film festivals in Cannes, Venice and Berlin, to the Munich Beer Festival, the Eurovision Song Contest and haute couture shows in Paris. This anniversary show features congratulatory messages from famous personalities, as presenters introduce just some of the magic moments from the past 14 years.
