Sunday Best: Stevie

Sunday, 10 June 2012

Sunday nights on ABC2 is the home of Sunday Best, an outstanding collection of game-changing and thought-provoking feature length documentaries. We've done the work to bring you the best must-see intelligent docos that are just 2 good to miss.

Put on your Sunday Best...

University student Steve James (Hoop Dreams) became a 'Big Brother' to Stevie Fielding, a difficult, hyperactive kid, living a sad and troubled life in a rural community in Illinois. Stevie had been born illegitimately to an unknown father and a mother who never wanted him, beat him 'black and blue' as an infant, and then gave him to his new step-grandmother to raise.

James ended formal 'Big Brother' duties with Stevie in 1985 when he moved to Chicago and despite feeling he should stay in touch, lost complete contact.

Ten years later James reconnects with Stevie and, with his permission, begins a film about him - a search to discover what had happened to Stevie over the past ten years and an attempt to understand the forces that had shaped his life. James also wants to atone for the guilt he feels over having left him and for failing to reach him while his Big Brother.

Now a balding, scruffy 24 year old, the frustration and sadness of Stevie's youth has given way to the rage of an impulsive man who has been arrested nearly a dozen times and is about to go to trial for a serious sexual abuse offence.

Tribal Wives: Mentawai/ Indonesia

Monday, 11 June 2012

The Mentawai live deep in the jungle on a remote island off the coast of Indonesia - a monogamous tribe where women are tattooed and sharpen their teeth. Their lives are dominated by the spirit world, and male sikerei, or witch doctors, watch over the village.

Living with them for the next month is 38-year-old Andy Wraith. Andy is deeply driven. Not happy with just being a dentist, she's also qualified as a doctor and an anaesthetist. She has run marathons, rowed for her university and fenced for Britain.

But she realises that she has a problem. In her cluttered and successful world, she seems to have forgotten herself. Amongst the Mentawai, high-flying Andy is adopted as a daughter of the tribe, and is forced to revaluate just what success means.

Bored To Death: The Case Of The Missing Screenplay

Monday, 11 June 2012

At a New York film-society party, Jonathan (Jason Schwartzman) is introduced to filmmaker Jim Jarmusch. The director is a fan of Jonathan's first book and gives him a personalised copy of a script that he would like Jonathan to re-write for him.

Afterwards, Jonathan participates in an ill-advised late-night tryst with a (very) young party girl, which results in him leaving his script in a therapist's office. He turns to his best friend Ray (Zach Galifianakis) to pose as a patient in order to retrieve it.

Meanwhile, Jonathan's editor George (Ted Danson) is left bewildered when he runs into his sexy ex-wife Priscilla and her arrogant new husband, fellow publishing rival Richard Antrem (Oliver Platt).

PRODUCTION DETAILS:

A HBO production created and written by Jonathan Ames. Executive Producers: Jonathan Ames, Sarah Condon, Troy Miller, Stephanie Davis and Dave Becky.

Louie: Poker/ Divorce

Monday, 11 June 2012

Louie is enjoying a game of poker with his buddies. One of the players – a gay man - educates the group about gay lifestyle habits, and the ill effects of homophobia.

Onstage, Louie makes jokes about his impending divorce after 14 years of marriage. He likens it to stepping out of a time machine that works in real time.

After signing his divorce papers, Louie meets up with his brother who is upset about Louie's divorce. He tells Louie that his life seems bleak without a wife or children. Louie reminds him that he has half-time custody of his kids, but his brother still maintains that Louie's life has a gloomy outlook.

Reminiscing about his younger days, Louie looks through his high school yearbook and sees a photo of an old high-school crush, Tammy Wickilinis. He makes contact with Tammy via the internet and they arrange to meet up at her home.

PRODUCTION DETAILS:

An FX Networks production. Created and written by Louis C.K. Executive Producers: Louis C.K., M. Blair Breard, Dave Becky, and 3 Arts Entertainment.

Archer : Training Day

Tuesday, 12 June 2012

Archer is an animated half-hour comedy set at ISIS, an international spy agency, where global crises are merely opportunities for its highly trained employees to confuse, undermine, betray and royally screw each other.

The Making Of Life's Too Short

Wednesday, 13 June 2012

In this 'making of' special Ricky Gervais takes viewers behind the scenes as he discusses the making of Life's Too Short with co-creator Stephen Merchant and star Warwick Davis.

It offers a unique look at what to expect from the comedy series, as well as an insight into how Ricky and Stephen work. The show features clips from the series and interviews with the guest stars including Liam Neeson, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Cat Deeley and Sting.

Life's Too Short is the new observational comedy written and directed by the creators of The Office and Extras, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant.

The series is a faux documentary that centres on Warwick Davis, (Britain's pre-eminent dwarf actor and star of box office hit movies such as Star Wars, Willow and Harry Potter) as a fictionalised version of himself desperately trying to hustle and connive his way back into the spotlight.

Teen Wolf

Like most teenage boys, Scott Howard (Michael J. Fox) spends his time thinking about scoring - with girls, in class, and on the basketball court. An average guy in an average town, Scott yearns to be different. His greatest wish is to be special. Well, Scott's wish is about to come true, in a very big way, and the results lead to some very funny situations.

It all begins very simply. A few itches around the ears, an unintentional snarl or two, eyes that sometimes glow red in the dark. Scott is desperate to hide these changes from his friends and his dad. Then one night, his team, the Beacontown Beavers, is losing yet another basketball game. Scott gets the ball and suddenly the other team piles on top of him. A frightening growl emits from underneath the pile of humans...and the Teen Wolf emerges. The court is his - and the Beavers win their first game in a decade.

So now Scott Howard certainly is different. He's become a teenage werewolf. But he's not a werewolf in the classic mould. Teen Wolf is no fierce mangler of the young and unprotected...he is the epitome of cool. And he's got a hook shot that can't be beat. Everyone, especially the beautiful and previously unapproachable Pamela, is delighted by the transformation. Only Boof, Scott's childhood friend is unimpressed.

Teen Wolf becomes a total celebrity, and he loves all the attention. Media coverage. Souvenir t-shirts. Fan-filled stands at all the basketball games.

Scott ultimately has to choose between being himself or the Wolf. On the one hand, there is certain glory, fame, and Pamela. On the other, the risk of losing all the attention and adoration...but then the knowledge that the friends he would have left really like him for himself.

Directed by Rod Daniel, Teen Wolf stars Michael J Fox.
