JULY marks the end of the academic year and welcomes in some much coveted freedom for all the hardworking students. I’ll admit I’m more than a bit jealous, there is something rather appealing about

drawing a line under each year and starting afresh, with a nice long holiday in between. Of course that would be without the meltdown inducing exams.

Why go all the way to Edinburgh when Teddington’s First Funny Lady, Viv Groskop brings the Fringe to our doors this month with a preview of her show, see page 6.

Massimo from Shambles shares a delicious octopus with pasta recipe on page 12. I am hoping it will be the key to me learning how to avoid rubberising the poor molluscs.

With our regular columns and expert advice to keep you entertained and informed. I hope you enjoy this edition TW11 and look forward to seeing you again next month.

Say Sorry To The Lady

I AM LOOKING FORWARD to bringing a flavour of Teddington to the Edinburgh Fringe this summer, where I’m performing my debut stand-up show Say Sorry to the Lady. When I say ‘a flavour of Teddington’, really it should be a slice of gluten-free Victoria sponge but I don’t think I’m going to

have time to bake every day. So I will just have to exude the essence of Teddington instead. It is easy to embody the hallmarks of Teddington living. I will need to wear a co-ordinated Boden outfit with matching ‘fun’ lace-up pumps, maybe topped off with a magenta fascinator sourced from

Mary’s Living and Giving. I will sport that slightly smug, knowing look that says ‘My children’s school has an excellent Ofsted report.’ And I will occasionally reveal a glint in the eye that reveals a secret passion for Fifty Shades of Grey. (It is a little-known fact that at the very height of that dirty book’s popularity, Waterstone’s Teddington was outselling every other branch in London.)The one Teddington signature look I won’t be championing is one I recently heard about from an assistant at one of our many premium beauty parlours. This beautician told me that the vajazzle

has come to Teddington. And how. For any vicars reading (and I do hope there are some): this is intimate topiary for the ladies. Don’t Google it, you’ll spill your tea, reverend. It involves waxing away everything that God put down there - yes, everything - and replacing it with a load of sequins. These are carefully glued on by beauticians like the one I was talking to.Apparently, though, a sprinkling of your average Swarovski crystals arranged in the shape of a swan is not dazzling enough for the discerning customers of TW11. No, they want something special and unique, celebrating what matters most

in their lives. They don’t want Union Jacks motifs or love hearts or butterflies and bows. None of that is good enough for them. Instead they want a bespoke service. They want their husband’s initials spelled out across their undercarriage. Yes. Their husband’s initials. Which

is especially brave when you think about how

many families have double-barreled surnames around here. I’m impressed they have the time to get this sort of thing done. Let alone the space. I struggled to believe this story when the beautician told me all this. ‘Are you sure you’re not making this up?’ ‘No,’ she said, ‘We had a woman who came in last week and wanted a number fifty down there for her fiftieth birthday.’ Me: ‘Are you sure this lady was from Teddington?’ She: ‘Oh yes, definitely. It’s all the rage around here.’

Somewhere under the surface - and certainly under ladies’ pants - our hometown is changing. It’s only a question of time before the TV execs zoom in on this fascinating new British demographic. Move over, TOWIE: The Only Way is Teddington.

Viv Groskop is an author, comedian and resident MC at The Dead Parrot Society.Edinburgh preview of Say Sorry to the Lady is on at The Anglers on Sat 18th July at 8pm, also featuring Canadian comic Chris Betts’ show Social Animal. Tickets £5: thedeadparrotsociety.co.uk

PASTA IS THE HEART and soul of Italian cuisine, so it’s no surprise that most of my favourite

recipes are of pasta. Myself and the team always enjoy a bowl of pasta at least once a day, it helps keep our energy levels high for the long days on our feet.

Cooked perfectly and married together with the correct sauces and shapes is key... Spaghetti Bolognese is one Britain’s most well-known pasta recipes, it is unfortunately inauthentic. In Italy Italians would cry at serving a meaty ragu with thin stringy pasta, instead using large shells or tubes to capture the sauce, or thicker long pasta, like tagliatelle and pappardelle are used.

I’ve chosen this recipe as seafood is a great pairing for spaghetti. Here I’m making spaghetti the original way called “chitarra” translated “guitar strings” handmade square spaghetti.

Pasta cooked al dente means ‘with a bite’ or literally ‘to the tooth’ this is also the best way to test pasta to see if it is properly cooked. The pasta should be slightly firm, offering some resistance to the tooth, but still tender. Buon appetito!

SPAGHETTI ALLA CHITARRA CON RAGÙ DI POLPOSPAGHETTI WITH OCTOPUS

1 Large octopus1 Large chilli, split in half3 Cloves garlic, whole3 tbsp Tomato passata or 2 crushed tomatoes300g SpaghettiLarge handful of parsley50ml Olive oilSea salt

1. Beat the octopus with a meat hammer to tenderise it.

2. Put the chililli, 2/3 of the parsley, garlic and 40m. of the olive oil in a large casserole. Add the octopus (do not season it or it

will toughen up). Cover with a lid and let it simmer for about one hour.

3. Remove the octopus (reserve the cooking liquid) and cut into little pieces. Keep the octopus and liquid on one side or cool and keep in the fridge until required.

4. Heat the rest of the oil in a pan, add the passata or tomatoes and the remaining parsley and the octopus with a little of its cooking liquid. Season to taste with salt only, and cook for a few minutes, to heat the octopus through.

5. Meanwhile cook the pasta in salted boiling water until al dente; drain and add to the pan with the octopus. Toss through for half a minute, then serve.

But if you just fancy sticking to a more traditional camping theme but with a little ‘style’ there are dome tents made in the incredibly strong geodesic shape as designed by R.Buckminster Fuller in the 1940s. They offer really roomy accommodation, are made out of recycled materials and still look incredibly modern. But then if you don’t even fancy putting up the tent yourself there are glamping sites throughout the UK and Europe where you can rent one pre-built and with all the furnishings included and simply tip up and enjoy!domegarden.co.uk/spaces glistencamping.com/

Gone Glamping

STRUGGLING TO FIGURE out where to go on holiday this summer? Well why not re-look at

an old theme of the mobile holiday home and see the modern options that are now available. This way you can pick a new destination for every holiday and simply pack up your accommodation and take it with you to the beach, the countryside or for a road trip around Europe.

The ‘Mehrzeller’ is a rather funky take on the old fashioned caravan which is made to order to suit your specific requirements and offers rather more swanky accommodation than your average off the shelf model. mehrzeller.com

If you like the idea of camping but not all the packing and unpacking and prefer the privacy of your own WC and cooking facilities then the ‘Opera’ could be a great option, named because of its similarity to the famous Sydney landmark. Inside it has two beds, hot and cold water and everything you might need built in that flat packs down into a standard trailer.

Teddington Lights Up

WHEN ROBERT FULLERTON Udney died in 1802, he was the owner of 70 acres of Teddington,

quite an accumulation in 12 years. These were in different plots in Teddington and mostly unconnected with each other. For the purposes of this discourse, we are only concerned with the 11 acres that stemmed from his house in the High Street and was contained by Udney Park Road to the east, Kingston Lane to the west and the Southfield, later to become Cromwell Road, to the south. This land had been awarded to him under the Teddington Enclosure Act of 1801 and had not been developed.

His house and estate were inherited by his daughter, Mary and her husband, Sir William Cunygham and on his death in 1834, everything passed to their son, Capt George Augustus Frederick Cunygham. Further sales took place with the lands passing to Henry Gouger, Charles Mackenzie, John Chamberlain and W H Hubbard. William Niven, the architect of St Albans and uncle of screen actor David Niven, acquired Udney House in 1880 although he only remained there until 1890. The house had been demolished by 1900.

The 11 acres still pretty much intact and undeveloped was acquired by the Belgravia Land Co Ltd in 1906. Strangely no attempt seems to have been made to develop the land for the next two decades.

In the early 1920s the Old Merchant Taylors’ Sports Club (the old boys association of the Merchant Taylors’ School founded 1561) raised a Memorial Fund, partly to provide for the education of sons of the fallen OMTs in the First World War and partly to establish a war memorial. They had been looking for playing fields as they had outgrown the facilities shared with Rosslyn Park RFC in Old Deer Park. As their Dr Cove-Smith reported ‘.... eventually owing to the zeal of H M Wyatt the site of Udney Park Road, Teddington was selected – a tumbled heap of allotments some fifteen acres in extant, necessitating much levelling and turfing but on a good gravel bed.’ The Old Merchant

Taylors’ War Memorial Sports Ground opened for business in October 1922 and the following year, The Old Merchant Taylors’ Sports Club was formed.

The School moved from the City of London to Hertfordshire in 1937 and the Sports Club followed shortly afterwards to a new location at Croxley Green leaving the Teddington site vacant.

Local legend has it that Lord Beaverbrook underwent some serious surgery at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington and after his successful treatment, he asked the hospital if he could do anything for them. Dr Charles Moran, personal physician to Winston Churchill, told Beaverbrook that the Hospital could do with a Medical School. Lord Beaverbrook duly obliged with a donation of £63,000. The Medical School was built but out of this bequest, the playing fields at Teddington were also purchased. Dr Moran considered it necessary to have good rugby facilities to attract the best students from Oxbridge. This created something of an atmosphere in the Rugby Union circles as scholarships were being offered to talented rugby playing would-be medical students and this smacked of professionalism to some of them.

The 1938 local directory shows that the site was renamed St Mary’s Hospital Medical School Athletic Ground. For some unknown reason, there were already a series of restrictive covenants applying to the sale of this land from 26 March 1908, which of themselves do not appear to be too onerous for any potential buyer. The conveyance of this land in the agreement of 30 April 1937 is between (1) the Vendors (2) the Rugby Union Trustees and (3) St Mary’s Hospital Sports Ground Ltd.

History Focus

Ken Howe is a historian and author of several local history books [email protected] Tel: 020 8943 1513

Further covenants were added to the new conveyance : -‘THE Purchasers hereby COVENANT with the Rugby Union Trustees AND IT IS HEREBY AGREED AND DECLARED as follows : -THAT the Purchasers shall not without the consent of the Rugby Union Trustees use the property hereby assured or any part thereof for any other purpose during the appropriate season than as a sports ground for the playing of games by Amateurs the chief game to be played thereon being Amateur Rugby Football and will not during any part of the year other than the appropriate season use the property or any part thereof for any other purpose than the playing of games by Amateurs.’

The next covenant is a confusing jumble of words which states what would happen in the event of a breach of covenant 1. In some circumstances, the Rugby Union Trustees would have the right to repurchase the ground from the Purchasers i.e. St Mary’s for a fee simple of £24,900. This all seems to be relevant to any such breach occurring ‘....at any time before the expiration of Twe4nty years from the death of the last survivor of all the children now living of His late Majesty King George the Fifty (sic).’ I have no doubt whatsoever that a good (or even a bad) lawyer could make something legible out of that – for a fee but I can only feel that the intention is not to alter the basic purpose of the original conveyance.

Covenant 3 provides for a situation if the Rugby Union Trustees do not arrange a sale within nine months of the breach and Covenant 4 defines that ‘an appropriate season’ shall be between the First Day of September in any year to the Thirtieth Day of April the following year.

Notwithstanding these covenants the conveyance was completed and this commenced a long and fruitful association between St Mary’s and Teddington. Their prowess as a rugby football club was enormous and they certainly became the most successful club in the hospital circuit and with such superior facilities, St Mary’s hosted many other cup finals and other representative

games including a fund raiser for Teddington Memorial Hospital on January 19th 1986 where Peter Yarrington’s Golden Oldies (a scratch team of internationals) captained by Roger Uttley took on a select Teddington XV picked from five or six Teddington area clubs. The score has been lost in the mists of time but over £5,000 was raised for Teddington Hospital on the day.

In the years following, St Mary’s became a constituent school of Imperial College London in 1988. ICL acquired a new sports ground in Heston in 2014 and the Teddington ground has been put up for sale. The Teddington Society have asked ICL to honour the intentions behind the original Beaverbrook gift and leave the playing fields as they found them. The ICL Trustees for their part do say that they ‘have a legal responsibility to ensure that all its assets are managed as effectively as possible.’

I understand that the bids are under consideration and it is a shame that the views of the students do not seem to have been considered. One Imperial Medic has said ‘Teddington is steeped in history and has been part of our club for decades and from when we were St Mary’s Medical School. Many traditions were born there and it would be a shame to lose its history and worth to our medical school for purely profitable means.’

Watch this space.

Tim Syrad runs the Teddington Wine Society teddingtonwinesociety.co.uk @winemantim

PUGLIA IS AN important agricultural region that occupies the heel of Italy. The key towns

are Foggia, Bari, Brindisi, Lecce and Taranto. I had the opportunity to visit the area recently while leading a wine tour and was amazed at the diversity and charm that I encountered. It is the fifth biggest wine producing area in Italy and makes about twice as much wine as New Zealand – which gives a sense of perspective. Furthermore, it is a huge production area for olive oil and the landscape is a sea of olive trees which is a sight to behold.

Historically, Puglia was a major contributor to the old EEC wine lake, and had a reputation for producing tired, oxidised whites and reds. A lot of wine was sold by cooperatives and vast bulk quantities were shipped around Italy to bolster some of the more famous wine names – particularly in poor years... allegedly!

TRANSFORMATION Over the past twenty years there has been a revolution. With domestic consumption declining and the world markets demanding a higher quality product, Puglia has had to completely review its position. There has been a big EU investment in estate upgrades – lots of wineries are now gleaming with stainless steel and staying cool with the latest refrigeration technology. The net result is clear to see – vibrant fresh whites, fruity and intense reds, a surge in rosato production and even some rather good dessert and sparkling wines.

NAMES THAT DESERVE BETTER RECOGNITIONSome of the best known wine areas Salice Salentino, Squinzano and Copertino are to be found near the beautiful city of Lecce. Over the course of my tour we discovered fabulous wines about an hour south east of Bari – areas of production such as Gioia del Colle, Locorotondo and Martina Franca deserve more attention. The region now has four DOCG wines (the highest quality level) which they are very proud of– three around Castelmonte to the west of Bari and a

Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale between Taranto and Lecce.

AN INDIGENOUS GRAPE FESTAs ever, the biggest challenge will be marketing. The world is saturated with huge volumes of well made, easy to drink wine and Puglia is awash with it. For me, one of the many joys of discovering a new wine region is to embrace the local grapes. Puglia has many varieties; the white grapes of Verdeca (not related to Verdejo, Verdelho or Viognier), Minutolo, Falanghina and Malvasia were fascinating to taste. The reds of Nero di Troia, Montepulciano, Negroamaro, Susumaniello and the most famous of all Primitivo displayed a depth and diversity that I wasn’t expecting.

Overall, when you add in the fabulous Trulli of Alberobello, amazing fish cuisine along the coast, oodles of Roman history and many innovative, passionate winemakers with a new wine story to tell, Puglia has a lot to offer.

TIM’S DINNERSSitting outside on a roof terrace in the centre of Lecce at the restaurant Le Quattro Spezierie that was in full swing. A little platter of amuse bouche arrived unexpectedly, swiftly followed by a squid ink risotto nero combined with some textured Porcini mushrooms. Main course was beef – fillet cooked to perfection medium rare paired well with a Salice Salentino Riserva and there was just enough room for pudding. A delicious trio of chocolate creations went brilliantly with a glass of the aforementioned Primitivo Dolce Naturale.

Councillor’s Update

catching figure does seem to show that the claims made by Haymarket during the planning process regarding the financial viability of the housing mix were unfounded. They suggested that even with the very small number of shared ownership units proposed, the success of the project was in question, and that a commercial developer ‘would be unlikely to progress the project on this basis.’ Apparently not – if you’ll excuse the double negative. This kind of thing is happening right across London time and time again, leading to a genuine concern that there is far too much room within the system. Without a doubt, when those GLA elections are upon us, housing is going to be the hot topic.

SALE OF IMPERIAL COLLEGE SPORTS GROUND, UDNEY PARK ROADWe understand that Imperial College is in final discussions with a couple potential buyers. Worryingly, we understand that both the bids from Teddington Athletic Football Club (Space to Play) for wholly sports use, and the bid from the Education Funding Agency on behalf of Turing House school have been rejected, which could point to Imperial looking to more lucrative bids from private developers. We must hope that the council can hold firm against inappropriate development of this important sports facility.

THE RECENT GENERAL Election saw Hampton

Wick and South Teddington councillor Tania Mathias elected to Parliament to replace Vincent Cable. Many congratulations to Tania, who I have no doubt will work very hard for our area. As a consequence of Tania’s retirement from the Council, there will now be a by-election in the ward of Hampton Wick on Thursday 2nd July. What? Election fatigue? Well, yes, that is understandable, but after this we will hopefully all be able to take a break from the more combative side of politics, at least until next summer’s London Mayor and Assembly elections. The postal code TW11 covers a large part of the ward of Hampton Wick. Make sure you are clear where you are located, as there is by necessity a certain arbitrariness to all these civil boundaries. Whilst you may intuitively feel like you live in Teddington, that is no guarantee that you live in Teddington ward. Don’t miss out on your right to choose your new representative on the Council! There are plenty of important issues in the area.

HAYMARKET SELLS TEDDINGTON STUDIOS SITE FOR £81 MILLIONHaymarket Publishing won planning permission in October from the Council for the redevelopment of its Teddington Studios site into a scheme of 213 flats of up to seven storeys, just 12 of which are to be shared ownership homes. It has now reportedly sold the site to a Singapore-based property developer for £81 million. This eye-
