The only unchangeable thing is change itself, for everything: A frequently heard statement yet best applicable with our educational system. Why, for as of now, schools are facing drastic changes that are brought about by the newly-implemented K-12 curriculum.

It should not be appalling, because adding another two years to our basic education had really set things far different from what they used to be. Various reformations and innovations are expected; however, there are some things that some people think might not be necessary.

When the CHED Memorandum Order no. 20, series of 2013, was passed, controversies arouse for this memorandum has removed the Filipino as a core subject in the new General Education Curriculum (GEC) of the tertiary level. The Tanggol Wika and the Pambansang Samahan ng Linggwistika at Literaturang Pilipino are only few of the many who have purported that the new GEC had failed to intellectualize the Filipino language and that such will cause displacement of the Filipino faculty. But if we try to look a little further down the new GEC, we may see that nobody are afflicted.

The original 63 units (for humanities and social science majors) or 51 (for science, engineering and math majors) will be reduced to 36 units, since Filipino along with other disciplinary courses such as General Psychology and Basic Economics, and some remedial courses in English, Literature, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Humanities, and Social Sciences. Hence the newly-crafted curriculum is focused on liberal education. There will be more focus on the course taken since the removed subjects are already taken in the grades 11 and 12 (senior high school). Moreover, the CHED had also answered the allegations regarding the intellectualization of the language by mandating 9 units of the subjects in the new GE to be taught in the Filipino language.

However, the revision in the college curriculum is an unwise decision for many. Questions of which have set this issue in the limelight of arguments of many experts, educators and institutions. But then, we must realize that this is not a solely perennialist and essentialist world. We are now part of an era where there is a greater call for CHANGE. Yes, maybe, at first we may experience difficulties. It’s because creating change is like running an obstacle race: Your path readily changes, and there will be hindrances along the way. But if your goal is clear and direct, you will not lose your way.

This new General Education Curriculum may not be as perfect as it should be, but it is just the beginning. Isn’t it a popular Filipino trait of being pliant like the bamboo? Flexible and unafraid to face CHANGES!

EDITORIALA Little Further Down

the New GEC

On and OffPlato once said: “The state is essentially an educational community. It is created by education and can survive only on condition that all citizens receive an education that will enable them to make rational political decisions”.

We may appear to be a society divided on so many issues but we have remained united in the belief that investing in the education of our children shall lead to the success of a nation. Unfortunately, notwithstanding such commitment, our educational system remains deceased and plagued with the same ills that have been ravaging it for generations. It was on May 15, 2013 when Aquino III signed the Enhanced Basic Education Ad of 2013 or simply the K-12 Program. The government shifted to the K to 12 program believing that this will uplift the Philippines quality of education. Before the program was implemented, our country used to be one of the three countries worldwide left with only 10 year basic education curriculum. Of course, we need to elevate our status to be at par with the rest of the world especially in terms of quality education.

Yes! The government has been very eager with the implementation of the new education curriculum but some people are still having doubts and even fear knowing that the education system in the country is not that consistent but considered to be in an on and off status that some may compare it to a rain or shine weather or a person with no permanent address.

What is valid today may not be valid tomorrow as what is true today may not be true tomorrow. From NSEC, SEC, RBEC, our curriculum become BEC and after some years we are now facing challenges of K+12 Program.

Ever since, education seems to be born with a lot of challenges and difficulties usually because of contradictory parties. It is only a proof that even if the government keeps on changing our curriculum, there are still a lot of problems to exist. Side comments and violent reactions are often heard not only from the low income families but also from the elite groups of the society.

Just few months ago I have learned that a particular group of persons proposed suspension of the K+12 Program with the concern for the college instructors who are expected to be hanging for two years. They will be unemployed for the reason that high school graduates of 2016 will not anymore enroll to College but should undergo 2 years of Senior High School in the school and expertise of their choice.

This was another issue to be given attention and another problem to be solved by the government.

This proposal is actually another threat to the present situation of our educational system. Its almost three years, that the Department of Education (DepEd) is undergoing the path of K+12, with the teachers starting to cope to the sudden change and challenges cultivating what to be cultivated and are embracing what to be embraced. Filipinos are already in the middle of the race, why do propose for K-12 suspension? I do not know if you will agree with that this idea is exactly not helpful to the Filipino people. The government, educational personnel, school owners as well as the parents have spent a lot of investments to adapt to the new educational system. Why not disregard some political concerns, instead, suggest ways for enhancement and not for suspension of the recent curriculum which at present is starting to have some rooms for improvement? I think it will be beneficial to all and not only to the few.

Educational Field Trip, Why ban?

It has been an alarming and an upsetting school year, a trip that was planned to be invulnerable and to be educational and was designed to be an instrument for a great change. And change has been its centrepiece, some envisioned, but some are unexpectedly to happen on its own.

The latest incident of field trip, the BSU Field Trip tragedy, is reminded for two major causes, “Unpredictable Nature Disaster” and “Unacceptable Human Negligence.” It was a daring truth, terrible and hurtful. It meant to reverse the importance of the educational field trips which is an aide to turn theories more realistic, concrete and substantial, just as it contributes in shaping an exceptional individual who would be demanded of the society.

In the past, field trips were truly educational. It was accomplished to embolden the learners from partaking on its learning objectives. Educational program especially the field trip can make the learners focus on veracity and more exposed goal, like developing into civilized people who appreciate the breadth of human accomplishments. But it seems that the main objective became less prioritized; field trips today became more focus on human pleasure. It does not anymore relishing radical change but only the kind of change that would satisfy their wants for earthly things and a chance to get additional points.

BSU Field Trip Tragedy is purely an effect of misfortune. No one perceives nor wants it to happen, of course. The tragedy relentlessly run over the issue of laxity, and on the campaign of banning field trip at school. But the educational value of field trips is not a complete failure. I must say, “No to field trip” is not the solution. Why? Because a field trip is unquestionably beneficial: a research suggests that students actually retain a great deal of factual information in field trip; students who received a tour of a museum were able to recall details about the paintings they had seen at very high rates; it exposes students to a diversity of ideas, peoples, places and time periods that broadening experience imparts greater appreciation and understanding; and the most important outcome of a school tour is whether it cultivates an interest among students in returning to cultural institutions in the future.

Field trip supplements the incompetency of a four corner classroom. It enhances the value of a subject matter that would reflect the negligible deficiency on concepts and theories as given by the books or any replicas. It also shows that the learning should not be cornered, should not be setting a “boundary” that each student or learner has to attain wholeness and to be at their best.

The imposition of field trip, then, should be improved but not discarded. Enough of it had to remain stable for education to offer students however safety measures must be pushed firmly. Accident happens but it can also be prevented if only the guidelines were being strictly followed. Field trip in education was argued, evaluated, and some even questioned its worth. Still, for the past years its contribution to deep inch learning is undeniably boundless. To end its value is undoubtedly impossible.

R U YOUR SELFIE?Earlier this month, upon visiting my Mom’s new house in Lucena City.

I happened to ride in a bus with two passengers taking selfies.I wonder if they still feel okay and not feeling dizzy as I was. Trying to ingnore them, I decided to sleep but in the midst of it, I woke up being disturbed by the argumentation of the two selfie-holic girls who also caught the attention of almost all the passengers inside the bus. One of them told the other girl that she didnt look like her picture and that the picture was edited or being filtered to look nice .” That was how the argumentation started. secretly I smiled but felt so much disappointed about what is going on with the present generation.Maybe the passengers seating at the back of my seat have the same feelings as I heard them whispering, “Why make it a big deal? It’s just a selfie, right?”

Admittedly, I myself took selfies if chance permits and I wanted to look them better. I remembered James Franco the protagonist in the movie Wizard of Oz said “ In our age of social networking, the selfie is the new way to look someone right in the eye and say, “Hello, this is me.”’ But what if your selfie was completely unrecognizable and looked a bit like a caricature? Can we be proud of saying “Hello this is me?” We take selfies to share our experiences and express ourselves with our friends and families but if our obsession with perfection pushes us to create an aspirational representation of ourselves, the authenticity of our appearance escapes from our own photos.

Filipinos nowadays are infatuated with taking pictures of themselves that’s why mobile picture editing applications in android and IOS like Snapseed, PicsArt, Retrica, Instagram, Pixlr Express and many more are still on the rise. These apps produce magazine cover– like selfies in just a few seconds. Before sharing it with your network, one can edit its every detail like hair, blemish, and imperfections. According to surveys, there are more than one million selfies posted on social media each day, and that 36% of people admit that they “edit” their selfies before uploading. As the selfie phenomenon intensifies, some of us edit our selfies to near-flawlessness, modifying photos in an effort to be the best we can be — but why? According to some psychiatrists, taking selfies is linked to dysmorphic disorder, mental illness and narcissism or self-admiration. I remembered Narcissus in Greek mythology who fell in love with his own reflection. And to support this, researchers at Opinium found out that 34% of men, women not yet included modify their lips, eyes, skin color, or physique before publishing their photos. With these modifications, can we still classify them selfies? Is it worth a “like”? It can be that our face is on the photograph and may reason out that we just edit it for enhancement but, once we edit our pictures it is not anymore our real selves but our “perfected selves.” Let us not deceive ourselves. Where do our self –confidence go? Since that the theme of “selfies” is the feeling of self-importance, why not take a real selfie? and not let others put thoughts into your mind that takes away your self-confidence. Show the world how important you are. Let’s change the way we think about selfies.

Go ahead. Did you take one? Oh wait, let me take a #realselfie

“I am accepting the ice bucket challenge and I am going to donate $100 to ALS Association. Now, I nominate…” – these are the popular lines of many people from different parts of the world who takes the widespread ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. This has became viral to social media and different networking sites which is an activity of pouring or dumping a bucket of ice on challenger’s head who will also donate money to the ALS Association in United States and Motor Neurone Disease Association in United Kingdom advocating this charitable fundraising gimmick. A person who is going to take the challenge is free to nominate someone that he or she wants and the nominee must respond to the challenge within 24 hours. The nominee is allowed to choose whether he will accept the challenge and donate money or may refuse to do it but still he has to donate $100. Whatever the person being challenged decided to do, he/she is required to have his/her own video while taking the ice bucket

challenge. This kind of fundraising gimmick is an interesting and queer one. But specifically, this must be taken and treated seriously because this is created for charitable reasons. Some still do not know the reason why many people do this while others are still confused about the purposes behind all of these. To end up all of the confusions, I will make it short: the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge is conducted to promote awareness to the most common neurone disease, the ALS Disease (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) and to gain fund for research about this.

ALS Association (ALSA is focusing to this kind of disease because up to the present day, there is still no cure for a neurogenerative disease, also called as Charcot Disease and Lou Gehrig’s Disease after Lou Gehrig, a baseball legend who revealed in 1839 that he suffered from ALS and whose life was ended by this kind of illness. It is characterized by muscle spasticity of stiffness, progressive weakness due to muscle atrophy and difficulty in

speaking, swallowing, and breathing. Out of 100,000 patients, 2 of them die. If there is any treatment for this, medicines like Riluzole and passive stretching of muscles in physical therapy are known but these are just for relieving symptoms to improve survival and prolong life. Up to the present day, there is no scientific understanding of how and why this kind of disease happens. Causes of ALS are still being searched by the scientists and medical personnel.

In the update of the New York Times, more than 1.2 million people shared their videos with the challenge while daring others. May people was dared to the very cold challenge even the well-known personalities all over the world. Popular singers like Britney Spears, Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift had already taken it as well as Oprah Winfrey and the former president of US, George W. Bush, who also dared Bill Clinton. After doing the ice bucket challenge, LeBron James and Justin Bieber challenged President Barrack Obama to do this but he refused it. He rather chose to donate $100 to the association. Furthermore, Filipino public figures will not let themselves to be left behind. Showtime hosts like Vice Ganda, Anne Curtis and others did this and charitably donated to ALS Association. News anchor Noli de Castro and Leila de Lima also took the very cold Ice Bucket Challenge when they were dared. Today, many are still contributing to the fund-raising to help the patients of the serious ALS Disease. Wants to go with the trend? Then, be trending for a cause!

Are we Ready?

Little knowledge can be dangerous. In our fast-changing society where technology almost saturated every household, information can be easily accessed by almost everyone through the help of internet and there has been a notable increase in efficiency in terms of exchanging communication, trading of intelligence, and conducting transactions for the past ten years. But these advantages brought an equal weight of inconveniences and drawbacks to the people who are using it.

Last July 23, a text message, informing a supposed impending arrival of a tsunami, circulated among the village folks in San Juan, Batangas and Candelaria, Quezon that sent them into a state of frenzy, enough at any rate to send most people scampering away into safety. Almost 5,000 residents flee from their houses; leaving their belongings just to save their lives. I learned that there were those who were mature enough to ask one barangay councilor if there was any truth about the tsunami warning and the councilor, had asked somebody from the city hall, who, in turn, replied that there had been no official warning. Yet, the people scampered away. Unfortunately, a 64-year old grandmother died when she fell off the tricycle and must have thumped her head hard, causing instantaneous death. It was a sad fact. But what made it even sadder is that the tsunami threat turned out to be a hoax.

But what is more even outraging was that there have been some reports of robbery happened during the evacuation. Instinctively, when one is running from an impending danger, your the immediate priority is one’s life and his

loved ones, disregarding any material possessions one may have. The urgency of the situation caused panic and terror to most people, leaving their house unattended and exposed to thieves. According to the town folks, the alleged tsunami became “tsunakaw”.

Those who tried to trace how the hoax might have started interviewed the residents along the shore in San Juan, Batangas. These people theorized that somebody must have been spooked by how far the sea had receded from the shore.

I once read that little knowledge is dangerous; and this appears to have been the case in San Juan. True, the quick retreat of the sea can spell the impending arrival of a tsunami. But in San Juan at the time, it was just really a low tide.

It could not have been comical to the common folks who were driven into a state of panic by the text messages, however. Glenda was a traumatizing experience; and even a week after it passed, people who had to endure its passing were still understandably jittery. The daily news reports have only been too vivid in documenting how people’s lives have been altered in a few short hours. Those who had their roofs blown away turned out to be the lucky ones; indeed, there were whose entire houses had been destroyed by the typhoon.

One cannot blame these people, they had no power and were, therefore, unaware; and yet were also vulnerable. They were reliant on whatever news comes through the courtesy of people passing by.

The havoc and devastation left behind by the typhoon Glenda and the disaster of the tsunami hoax, which could have been avoided,

conveyed an obvious message—disaster preparedness.

It is evident that there had been some improvements in our capacity to respond to different calamities, especially typhoons. Many local governments have implemented measurers to protect not only lives but also private properties, infrastructures, crops and livestocks.

More can be done, however, particularly in certain aspects such as evacuation procedures and facilities. After Yolanda, there is more public readiness to temporarily leave homes in preparation for typhoons, but there were still reports of people refusing to evacuate to safer ground. Protocols can be drawn up to guide local officials on the conditions that will warrant forced evacuation. Security measures must also be in place to prevent empty homes from being looted. Fear of looting is one of the biggest reasons for the refusal of people to leave their homes even when experts are giving warnings of the approaching powerful typhoon. Educating people is a must. It is a need to require all communities to have educational information and drills to help them prepare. Disaster campaigns are now being introduced to schools, government offices, and private infrastructure to ensure the safety and to raise awareness. But I highly doubt if they are succeeding in their campaigns, or what more are still lacking. What happened to San Juan and Candelaria, clearly indicates that we are far from being prepared to respond to disasters.

I’m not wishing for these to happen, but I know, that everyone is aware, that there will be more challenges and disasters that may take lives, tragedies that, if we are prepared, can be prevented. Natural disasters are inevitable—whether it is massive flooding from super typhoons, volcanic eruptions or earthquakes. Given that the Philippines’ geographical location is in the Pacific Ring of Fire, Filipinos are prone to all sorts of natural disasters. The misinformation that took a life highlighted weaknesses in areas that begged to be improved. As much as the climate change has something to do with the weather, we should realize that this can be avoided. With this, we all have the duty to do our part in preparing for the worst. But the question is, Are we ready?

The great increase in enrolment maybe unexpected to majority who happened to be at ease to having more or less 400 students every semester yet a vision come true for the administrators who at the very start expected for an enrolment hike since that TWA has gaining a lot of positive impressions from the public for producing efficient and effective graduates. In addition, the school is offering additional majors to reach the present needs and to enhance the expertise of the students. Few years ago Science was included in the

choices of majors in the Secondary Education and just last year Early Childhood Education was firstly offered to the Elementary Education students. Furthermore to meet the expectations and satisfaction of the school’s clients TWA is continuously hiring qualified College mentors, Very recently Mr. Jessie V. Vasquez, a multi awarded principal III of Sta. Catalina National High School and Mr. Rodrigo Velasco, a Doctor of Business Management were added to the College Faculty.

For almost nine decades, Tayabas Western Academy has been a part of enhancing and molding productive individuals in the municipality and nearby towns. The only institution that takes into consideration the desire of the working students to have the chance of acquiring tertiary education or a college degree while working to earn certain amount for their tuition fees and allowance.

Since 2011, it is observed that the enrollment in the department has been continuously increasing along with the growing numbers of LET Passers. This is indeed a good indication that TWA is gaining the trust of the public. The growing number of LET passers as well is a reliable

evidence that the school offers quality education.

Nowadays TWA Education graduates are making names in various public and private elementary and secondary schools in the whole province of Quezon. Some of them are now heads principals of educational institution and if not, are mostly considered dedicated and resourceful teachers who possessed talents and skills.

To mention one, Mr. Buenaventura D. Luces, one of the Metrobank Ten Most Outstanding Teachers in 2011 is a TWA College alumni, Batch 1990.

Dean Magnayon commits a continuous service to TWA

Dr. Thelma O. Magnayon, the dean of the TWA College Department committed a continuous service in the College Department. Last year she retired as a District Supervisor from the public elementary school where she rendered 42 years of service. Furthermore Dr. Magnayon has been a part of TWA College for more than two decades already and for six years now serving as the Dean of TWA College Department.

According to her, now that she has already retired from the public school, she can give her full supervision and management in the department unlike before . TWA is indeed closed to her heart and she is willing to be a part to the institution as long as TWA needs her service.

One thing that greatly inspired her to keep going is the fact that starting she was designated as a Dean, an increase in the enrolment of college was observed yearly and now not only doubled but almost tripled.

EMS 2014 uncovers Workplace Violence

Events Management Students (EMS) of Tayabas Western Academy successfully conducted a seminar about Workplace Violence: Strategies for Prevention last June 24, 2014 held at TWA Library Building. This was actively participated by the Office Administration students with the respectable Councilor Aileen Malabanan-Dellosa as the speaker.

The seminar started at exactly 5:00 pm with an invocation followed

by the singing of the National Anthem. The team leader of the Events Management class—Ms. Monica Ojos opened the program. Afterwards, Ms. Rizalina Sagullo, the School Director, delivered her inspirational message by sharing a quite reminiscing poem “All I Really Need To Know I Learned in Kindergarten”. entertained and wittily answered by Councilor Dellosa.

To the surprise of everybody Ms. Sheena Rose Castillo rendered a heart-felt song performance while the students were enjoying their snacks. The seminar ended by the announcement that Ms. Sheena Rose Castillo will be the team leader of the next event which will be a seminar workshop.

Indeed, it was a profound and worthwhile seminar from which the participating students gained a lot of knowledge on how they can protect their rights against violence. According to some participants. BS Accountancy celebrates 2nd JPIA DayWith the theme “UTILIZING

PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING SKILLS” the Bachelor of Science in Accountancy (BSA) students of Tayabas Wester Academy celebrated its 2nd Junior Philippines Institute of Accountants (JPIA) Day last August 30 at the TWA Campus in Candelaria, Quezon.

Elaine M. Bagsic, the President of the organization together with her co–officers led the celebration with the help and guidance of their supportive advisers Mrs. Benilda R. De Guia, Mrs. Marinel D.Maranan and Mr. Joseph Reyroso. Of course the Dean of College Department Dr. Thelma O. Magnayon and the school director Mrs. Rizalina M. Sagullo were of full support too.

The program began at exactly 8: 00 AM with Parlor Games while the COBS students who were also

In level 2, Alexandra Gonzaga garnering 18 points ranked 1st, Mary Lyn Suleta 2nd with 16 points and Keiza Estrellana 3rd having 12 points. It was indeed a very tight competition among the winners who gave their best shots during the quiz bee.

Battle between the COBS and JPIAN athletes followed right after. In Basketball, JPIANs greatly showed their skills in dribbling and shooting along with strategies on defenses. They made advances in the early encounters of the game but unfortunately lost to COBS at the end of the game with the scores of 67-61. On the other hand they emerged victorious in the field of Volleyball where both a men and women team grabbed the win.

JPIA and COBS students decided to join together in a ball that was held in the evening on the same day. Wearing semi formal attires they have been together in a party The amazing presentations, the games and the search for the evening titles were greatly enjoyed .

The Events Management Students pool their time, skills and resources for the second time to the successfully organized English Proficiency Training participated by a total of 79 BSBA and BSC students held at Tayabas Western Academy, September 13, 2014.

The training started at 5:00 pm with a solemn invocation followed by the singing of Philippine National Anthem. The program, then, was opened by Sheena Rose Castillo, EMS team leader, with a Program Rationale.

In the absence of Dr. Thelma O. Magnayon, Mrs. Imelda M. Cueto, a College English Instructor, welcomed everybody by giving the participants the meaning of English Proficiency and how significant it is for them, most especially for their future.

Ms. Rizalina Sagullo, the School Director, continuously inspires the college academicians

through her brief but profound message. Afterwards, Ms. Lea O. Babasa, one of the organizers, introduced the speaker, Ms. Alyssa Marie L. Mijares who is an English Professor and ESL Trainer.

Ms. Mijares started the training proper by letting the participants watch a motivational video presentation which, according to her, she usually does to start a talk. As the training moves further, the participants claimed enjoyment especially at the midpart when they have to repeat after what word or sentence the video presentation had said to be repeated. Moreover, Ms. Mijares made the participants aware of the ASEAN 2015 where there is what we call borderless education for countries belong to ASEAN, wherein English Proficiency is a major advantage. She made every participants impressed with her fluent British and American English.

presented the idea to the Dean and the School Director who immediately approved showing their full support. To satisfy the curiosity of some students about the club, Rotaract is an international organization with the objective “Service above self and fellowship through service”. Rotaract Club of Candelaria intends to provide opportunities for young men and women to enhance the knowledge and skills that will assist them in personal development, to address the physical and social needs of their communities and to promote better relations between all people worldwide through a framework of friendship and service. Last year, the club under the leadership of Mr. Christian Castillo was awarded the “Most Outstanding Club” of District 3820 which made Candelaria reigns over Mindoro, Marindoque, Laguna, Batangas and Bicol – a victory worth celebrating for and something Candelariahing Pinoy can be proud of. Racclock Installation, the club’s first project, was made possible last August 25, 2014. TWA Rotaractors are planning to do more projects that will benefit their fellow students and serve the town of Candelaria

Embracing RCC is indeed worthwhile. It proves that TWA is not only an academic-centered institution but is also a promoter and an advocate of Social Responsibility, and that academicians could not only be academically competitive students but individuals with purpose as well. To those who are willing to share their 3T’s (Talent, Treasure, Time) be a TWA Rotaractor and experience the joy and fulfilment in doing noble acts

“The future Filipino teachers need to have the proficiency”. This is the message of the Philippine Association For Teacher Education (PAFTE’s) 7th Regional Quiz Bee and Seminar for Teacher Education Students about “Pedagogical Competencies for K to 12’s Grade 11 and 12” held at the Batangas City Coliseum, Batangas City, last September 24, 2014 which was joined by over 3,000 pre-service teachers and instructors in CALABARZON. “The experience was indeed meaningful and worthwhile”, Francisco and Macanda uttered. Belista, President of the Education Department also added “ I am looking forward to my fellow future educators having a learning experience with PAFTE too.”

his evening you will experience, one of the memorable, exciting and extraordinary moment in your college life, I assure you!” these were the most remembered lines of Mr. Fernando Lontok III, TWA SSC President

during his message at the onset of the TWA College Acquaintance Party last August 9, 2014. That night was indeed extraordinary and something unusual, Lontok III was not mistaken in outversing his lines as everyone in the party experienced something unique and special besides the feeling of being an eye catcher in their own chosen attire. Entering the TWA gate, I can feel the nostalgic atmosphere which made me feel going back to the past. The entrance , the stage decorations and the suits made me

imagined the kind of living and the way of people several decades ago. That was the time that I learned to like the idea of vintage which at first I am very much apprehensive believing that the suggested party with the Vintage theme will turn out boring and will make us appear like “Baduy or nerd”. The truth is, everyone felt great of the new experience. The onset of the party was so solemn giving way to the opening program, welcoming the numerous freshmen students and induction of officers, The elegance and glamour began when the chosen candidates for Mr. and Ms.Acquaintance and other titles ramped around the TWA quadrangle. I was greatly hooked by the fashion of the past. The gowns, coats and hair styles were greatly amazing as every candidate stunned and gave justice to their own vintage attire.

Among the 30 pairs of handsome and

By: Jessamine A. Abrilbeautiful candidates, the following were chosen to be the title holders of the Acquaintance Party this year; Jay Edward Silva and Cathleen Lacuata were the Mr. and Ms. Acquaintance 2014, Silva also got the award of Best in Vintage Attire for Male together with Ms. Lea Agdan for Female.Benjo Umali and Ms. Jennelyn Belista were also chosen as the Male and Female Best in Vintage Attire from the set of Officers

Of course our beloved mentors went vintage too Stunning and gorgeous as the students. From them, Mr. Rodrigo Velasco and Mrs. Marcela Umali were chosen as the Best Dressed Faculty and Mrs. Riza G. Amarillo became the Star of the Night. Mr. Lontok with Ms. Diana Hinoguin opened the dance floor with a ballroom dancing and then the party began.

TWA went vintage for just a night but the experience is worthwhile giving the chance for the academicians to reminisce the past with great appreciation and significance. We may now be too far in terms of modernization but we should not forget our past, the reason why we are here and what we are at present.

idnapping, murder, devastation, and disasters—these are just common articles in the daily news about the Philippines which always caused me an aching heart. But when the news about a Saudi Arabian journalist, Rawan Radwan who was searching for her long-

time missed Pinay nanny broke last August, I am quite amazed and once again feel proud of being a Filipino. I used to be greatly interested about the whole story especially when it was announced that the missed Yaya is a fellow Candelarian.

From then on, I tried to be updated regarding the development of the search. What a coincidence that I happened to watch live the surprise and emotional meeting of Rawan Radwan and Luningning at Tayabas Western Academy where she was also awarded as the Outstanding Alumna of Batch 1980. I thought that recognizing her on

one of Jessica Soho’s segments is the end of her television journey but I was mistaken. From that time, I never stopped finding time to be with her to know some inspirational moments of her life.

It was a great opportunity to have conducted an interview with Marie Luningning Bebit, a resident of School View Park Subdivision, Masalukot I, Candelaria, Quezon, an inspiring Filipina.

According to her, she was crowned as Miss Academy in 1980 during the 52nd Foundation Anniversary of Tayabas Western Academy. Aside from 1980’s Miss Academy, she had been an active participant of the school in different

By: Jennelyn D. Belista

activities, had been recognized as the Most Outstanding CAT female officer in the same year and was always chosen as Muse in the different events.

The many accomplishments experienced in TWA are just some of her inspiring memories especially when she decided to work out

of the country. Working abroad was not that easy as what everybody thinks but Luningning showed us the positive side of it. Her working experience as a nanny in Radwan’s family is one of the proof that she really deserves the recognitions and awards received not only in our country but even in other parts of the world. Dada Mary possesses not only beauty but also a loving heart which reflects the real essence of a Filipina.

Now my aching heart is starting to be healed. The story of Luningning truly inspired me. Just like her we can also make our own inspiring story by just being true to ourselves and by working with love and dedication, who knows, someday we

can be another Dada Mary who is now a pride of the Filipinos, the pride of Candelarians and the pride of Academicians.

od automatically provides!”- the most common reminder she always tell me whenever I felt drowning in sorrow. When I met her, I know that every day of my life would be an Araneta Coliseum- a place of fun and wonderful experiences. Grown up from a poor family, has hardworking mother, experience the difficulties and so much struggles and has simple goals in

life – these are just some similarities we have which maybe the reasons why we are still together for almost four years. For a long period of our friendship, I never saw her crying inspite of the dark side of her life but she used to keep on going and letting God’s will to be done. Knowing how hard life for her is one might say she is exactly a weak person who will easily give up during trials. But the truth is she is a woman of strength and faith.

At the age of five, she discovered that her father did not accept her as a daughter but then she grew happy and contented with just the guidance of her mother. They tried to live satisfactorily until the time when her mother felt that life might be easy if she could have a partner in taking care of her. She respected the decision of her mother and with a stepfather they started to live as a complete family. But the expectation did not come up into a realization. Life was still tough and struggles for her leveled up to the most difficult one. She experienced going to school without anything as her “baon”. The only thing she has is the reminder marked by her mother, “Kaya ka pumapasok para mag-aral hindi para

sa baon.” Rainy and sunny days were the witnesses of all the challenges she encountered and yet, she remained as a well-painted young lady with the belief that nobody could ruin her

beauty from within and that she graduated valedictorian in high school, a reward for her sacrifices.

She is my best friend and my inspiration! Hardships served as her building blocks to achieve what she is right now. Being one of

the graduating students who aspires to move to the real journey of teaching life. When you see this girl you will also see in her eyes the

beauty of living. You couldn’t trace the numerous challenges which tried to pull her down. Her smile is my source of keeping go. A true

friend who knows how to make me glow and who always make me realize that Life must go on, no matter what it takes. You must

know her too, for you to experience a life of positive thoughts.

To my Fellow College Academicians!By: Kiara Jascha B. Cleofas (AOA-I)

The last time I remembered was that I am receiving my diploma and as I looked down, the flash of the cameras brought back all the memories I have, Staring at the crowd, once in a while I

reminisced the days when I was with the best people in my life. Just then, the glimmer of lights focused on me awaken me from my reminiscing. It was one of the happiest and the most

wonderful and unforgettable moment of my life.

Stepping back into reality, here I am in the middle of nowhere I don’t even have an idea where to go and what to do. Butterflies inside my stomach; cold sweat over my body. New faces, new environment and new socialization.

New atmosphere. New teachers. New facilities. New page in my life. God, I am now a freshman college student!

College life is undeniably serious, a total opposite of high school life. A big, big difference as what I see. Say goodbye to your cool, easy-going, and happy-go-lucky attitude.

Want to know why? College life is really not a joke. This time everything lies in our own hands.. If you choose not to fail accordingly, then you will not fail.

Success is exactly one’s choice too. In fact, I do believed that this time, we need to be physically, socially, emotionally and mentally mature in order to go through the challenges of studies as well.

On the contrary, of course, I guess all of us are looking forward to see the brighter side of college. Let us bring out the best we can, and do something worth remembering. Studying is fun and meaningful,

when you study from the heart!

We are like Angels, with one wing we can fly

We are like angels of God, serving as guardians, saviors and inspirations to each other. Angels with various tasks, responsibilities and dreams as well, We may not be alike but , behind those differences we have something in common, that is we have just one single wing to spread and to fly over. But with a single wing, how can we soar high and reach the sky where the door of success and true happiness await? We may think it is impossible but we are born bound with duties and responsibilities, that is to love and serve each other just like what God taught us before He died on the cross.

We are born to share not to be selfish, to love and not to hate, to be happy and not to be sad. Think of the government officials who are serving the country and utilize the government funds in the welfare of his fellowmen and not for their own good. Think of the teachers who are satisfied performing their noble job wholeheartedly and patiently just to mold young minds without thinking of how much they will be compensated. Think of those families with parents who dedicatedly guide and provide their children’s need in spite of how hard life is, just to ensure them bright future. They are just some kind of persons who are truly happy because they are doing their responsibilities without expecting something in return. These kind of deeds should not only limit to few but to all. Remember that the key to real happiness and satisfaction is serving and doing something good to others.

We are like angels with one wing. A wing that could possibly take us together to certain heights. Each wing of us, could transform our dreams to reality. If we will only depend in our own wing , we could not exactly fly

but when we spread it to reach and embrace each other’s wing, then we can have multiple wings and together, we can fly and soar high reaching the farthest sky and reach for each own star.

Like angels of God , why not be true guardians and protectors of each other? Life seems to be troublesome nowadays but its not yet too late! Let us make use of our wings to change the world. Together let us fly with one goal and in one direction. Remember that lending a helping hand is not a choice its our duty mandated by our almighty God. Let us do it wholeheartedly and let us be each other’s wing!

I wish I could be your fists,A hand as metallic steel. So if someone will try to hurt you, They will be afraid, retreat and go.

I wish I could be your shadow, That follows you everywhere. Day and night I’ll be present, With me, you’ll never be alone.

I wish I could be your feet, Leading every step you’ll take. Taking you to a wonderful journey,Away from ragging darkness.

I wish I could be your eyes, Your windows to earth’s grace. I will show you it’s beauty, And blind me if it’s not.

I wish I could be your angel, Sent from heaven’s above. Who will protect you from evil, And guard you from illness.

All of these are fantasies, Which only aim you to be HAPPY. Joys, that what I feel, If this selfish wish will be real.

Wikang NaglalahoNi Ramcee M. Tolentino

Halika kaibigan at tayo’y magsaya.

Upang kalooban mo’y maging malaya.

“This is it!! This is really is it!!”

TWA celebrates school-wide Teachers’ Day

October 6, 2014 is not just a non –working holiday for the TWA teachers. It was also a day of great fun and excitement wherein the school management initiated a School-Wide Teachers’ Day Celebration for all the TWA teachers from the Pre-Elem/Elementary, High School and College Department held at Casa Patricia Resort, Candelaria, Quezon.

It was really a memorable moment for all the TWA mentors and their administrators who were there to celebrate with them. The preparation was just simple. It was just having fun swimming and eating together during lunchtime and “merienda”. TWA singers were alive wherein the rented Videoke unit did not have the

chance to be emptied that even the Director, Ma’am Rizalina M. Sagullo had sang her favorite song My

Way. Everybody experienced the coolness of the inviting pool and even those who were not prepared to swim decided to join the swimming. By that time Casa Patricia was the sole witness of how happy and cheerful TWA family was.

According to the teachers, nothing can compare the joy of being with their co-mentors and supportive administrators. For just a day, they were freed from

their hectic schedule in school coupled with a lot of paperworks to accomplish. They simply had fun just for a day but the fulfillment, the experience and the bonding on that one day will forever be cherished and be a part of their happy memories as teachers!

With the perseverance to bag the win during their first encounter, there is no time to relax for this team as they target to beat their opponent which at first left them behind with the 10-0 scores at the onset of the game.

Proving that they were the best and not that easy to beat COBS through the led of Ronnie Gonzales, the team captain responded to the advances made by the JPIANS. They made their own run and with the contribution of the other members of the team, they did a good fight and successfully grabbed the win.

It was a very tight encounter between the two teams. No one

could ever predict who will win as they exchanged points until the early fourth quarter. Both teams responded and answered with their own runs to every offense and defense made by each other. The two teams collide and exchange bucket after bucket.

In the end of the fourth quarter, the COBS team got the chance to deliver back to back three points shot that gave the team enough confidence and led them to victory with the scores of 61-67.

Brain rules in VolleyballBy: Christian Latayan

Brain organization proved that they are not that easy to beat in terms of volleyball as they emerged champion in both Volleyball Boys and Girls during the College Sportsfest held last October 1 and 2.

It was observed that on the first

day of the competition, Brain volleyball boys players find it hard to dump Builder as the game reached three sets to give way to the decision game, that was a very tough fight. In the end, Brain coached by Mr. Vicente Porto make it to lead for only 2 points,

Volleyball girls gained a lot of confidence and inspiration from the boys who won over the two contenders and with their desire of having the same fate

as of the boys they made it to champ in Volleyball Girls, too.

Although in the overall standing, the Brain ranked only second, they are not losing hope. The champion, Bearer is only 3 points ahead of them. According to them the quest is not yet over. There is TWA 87th Foundation Anniversary on January 14 - 16, 2015. Builders too are hopeful to defend their championship title last year.

October 2 and 3 were great days for the Bearer Organization as they bagged the championship trophy in the College Sportsfest 2014. It was remembered that in the past years the Bearer Organization was always 3rd in rank but now they have proven that they can make it to excel. This year, they became “Bigger, Better, Stronger, Bearer Forever” as what is printed on their tarpaulin banner.

First day of the Sportsfest already favored the Bearer by which they ranked 1st in the Attendance during the Parade and their flag being the first one to be raised. During the Mr. & Ms. Sportsfest in the afternoon Bearer candidate Bienjo Umali was chosen as the Mr. Sportsfest with Katrina Reyes of Builder as Ms. Sportsfest. The lucky momentum for the said Organization did not end there as they emerged Champion in the Pep Dance competition that followed right after the search for Mr. and Ms. Sportsfest.

Excitement arouse on the second day of the event where the championship of the ball games was held. TWA quadrangle was filled

with deafening screams , squeaking and cheers from the crowds of Brains , Bearers and Builders who greatly supported their players. At the end of the games, the Brain Organization emerged champion in both Volleyball Male and Female, in Table Tennis Male (Double) and in Scrabble Male. Builder organization did their best in Badminton girls (single and double), Table Tennis Female (Double), Dart Female and Scrabble Female while the Bearer emerged champion in Basketball,

Badminton Boys (single and double) and in Dart Male.

It was a very tough competition among the 3B’s. No one can predict who will emerge overall champion based on the result of the games during the second day. The question of which organization led the Sportfest 2014 was given answer during the awarding ceremony on the 3rd day, October 4, 2014. Garnering 214 points, Builder ranked 3rd, with 217 points Brain ranked 2nd and with 220 points Bearer was declared champion in 2014 TWA College Sportsfest a matter of 3 points gap among the three organizations.

Bearer champs in Pep Squad CompetitionBy: Aeron James T. Lector

Lively music and new moves coupled with determination - these are the weapons of the Bearer Pep Dance Troupe which led them to grab this year’s championship trophy in the PEP Dance Compe-tition during the College SPORTS FEST last October 2, 2014.

The Pep dance competition was the most awaited portion of the TWA SPORTS FEST wherein all academicians and faculty even from the high school department, patiently waited to watch the performances of the 3 B’s. The Builder organization which performed an Army-themed dance was the third placer; the Brain with their Super-hero theme

was second; and the Bearer on their Jungle-themed performance emerged1st placer.

It was a very tough competition among the competitors, Every performance was greatly cheered with all the, students from the different organizations screamed to support their team representatives.

It was observed that performances rendered by the college students in different competitions are improving through the yrears and now the school is anticipating a more dazzling dance competitions and spectacular performances in the upcoming TWA Foundation Day Celebration on January 2015.
