IntroductionThe Journal Quality List is published primarily to assist academics to target papers at jour-nals of an appropriate standard. We would be concerned if the list were used for staffevaluation purposes in a mechanistic way. Whilst every effort has been made to ensure theaccuracy of the Journal Quality List, we recommend that it be checked before used exten-sively for evaluation purposes. NL94 — VSNU 1994List constructed by VSNU (Vereniging Samenwerkende Nederlandse Universiteiten — As-sociation of Co-operating Dutch Universities) and based on a survey of Dutch academics ineconomics and business. Has a bias towards Economics, Finance and Quantitative Meth-ods, but covers all subject areas mentioned above.

Not95 — Nottingham University 1995List based on a survey of opinions of 397 UK academics from 27 institutions (all institutionsrated 5 or 4 in the 1992 RAE and a random selection of 3-rated institutions). Academicswere asked to rate a predefined list of journals “using a 1-5 scale, where 1 represents thelowest and 5 the highest quality assessment, bearing in mind the forthcoming Research As-sessment Exercise”. Journals with less than 10 responses were not included in the list.

Bfd97 — Bradford Appendix 1997

This appendix was produced in an attempt to improve upon the grading of journals in theVSNU (NL 1994) listing. This listing was circulated to all members of staff, who were askedto suggest modifications, upon the assumption that A - C grades represented journals of in-ternational standing. The list should be read in conjunction with other lists (especially theVSNU 1994 list) and should not be used as a list on its own.

US98 — VCU 1998List used by the Virginia Commonwealth University (Richmond, Canada) for determiningdoctoral-level graduate faculty status in the US, uses author affiliation indices (AAI). The AAIis the ratio of articles authored by faculty at 60 US universities and colleges with highly ratedbusiness programs to total articles authored by faculty at US universities and colleges. Assuch it is an objective, peer-based measure of the extent to which one competes againstfaculty at highly rated U.S. universities in order to publish in the journal. Ratings from 0.01 to1.00, with higher ratings indicating higher level journals. Journals with a 0.00 score are jour-nals that are seen as important, but for which data are not yet available.

SMJ99 — Strategic Management Journal 1999

Published as Tahai & Meyer (1999), Strategic Management Journal, vol. 20, pp. 279-296.The list attempts to determine which management journals have the greatest influence onthe field of management. Uses a dataset of 1275 articles published in 17 source journals (thetop 17 management journals in the SSCI) over a 2-year period. Journals that are cited mostfrequently are those that have had the most influence on the current literature (i.e., revealedpreference). Journals are ranked by citation frequency (1= most cited, 65 = least cited).

[Editor’s note] The WU Wien list contains over 1700 entries, but only entries in the researchareas covered by the current JQL have been included.

A+ Top journals with world-wide distribution and readership; covering the entirescope of a discipline; contributions are scientifically and methodologicallymost fastidious and innovative; very frequently pioneer work and milestonesof the respective discipline; incomprehensible for non-scientists or readerswithout in-depth method knowledge; toughest competition of authors from allover the world (very high refusal rate of manuscripts); refereed in a doubleblind procedure (at least two referees).

A World-wide distributed journals; emphasis in just one linguistic area as theexception; covering an entire discipline or an established subdiscipline; con-tributions are scientifically and methodologically most fastidious and innova-tive; frequently pioneer work and milestones of the respective discipline; un-derstandable for graduates of relevant studies; strong competition of authorsfrom an international realm; refereed in a double blind procedure (at least tworeferees).

B Journals with at least supraregional distribution in any language; covering atleast an established subdiscipline; contributions are scientifically or method-ologically innovative; understandable for practitioners without any degree inrelevant studies; manuscript submissions from a supraregional realm; refe-reed in a double blind procedure (at least two referees).

C At least national distribution; covering at least established subdiscipline; theeditors pay attention to legibility for non-scientist, although research resultshave editorial priority; practitioners rank among the core target group; at leastnational contributions; not necessarily anonymously refereed; however oneexternal referee at least.

D At least national distribution; specialized on any level; contributions containresults in simplified form; practitioners appear frequently as authors; contribu-tions are aimed at teaching or vocational training of practitioners; at least na-tional contributions; no formal reviewing procedures.

AST03 — Aston 2003Updated version of the Aston University 1999 list, which was based on a large survey ofopinions of academics of the Midlands universities. This original list was sent to Aston re-search convenors for discussion within their group and each group then sent in revised listswhich formed the basis of the new rankings. Anybody who wanted to add a journal wasasked to provide evidence, preferably citation evidence from the World of Knowledge DataBase, but failing that expert opinions in the field from other universities.

UQ03 — University of Queensland Journal Rating 2003This list was constructed in three stages:

1. Construction of a mega-database (over 2,000 titles) based on ratings and rankings fromover 120 sources.

2. Allocation of each title to one of 5 tiers (1 = highest, 5 = lowest) on the basis of the sec-ond highest rating from the rating/ranking sources (i.e., the rating must be from at leasttwo sources).

3. The data base was supplied to the six discipline cluster leaders in the school as a re-source that they could use to construct the official list (which comprises 588 journals).

[Editor’s note] In order to keep the JQL to a manageable length, lower-ranked journals(ranking 4&5) of the UQ list were only added if they already featured in the JQL. An excep-tion was made for Australasian journals and journals in the area of Entrepreneurship andCommunication, since these journals/areas were underrepresented in the other ranking listsincluded in the JQL.

VHB03 — Association of Univ. Professors of Mgmt in German speakingcountries

A ranking developed on behalf of the Association of University Professors of Management inGerman speaking countries (Verband der Hochschullehrer für Betriebswirtschaft - VHB).Based on a highly interactive and individualised survey distributed via the Internet, 651 pro-fessors and university researchers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland assessed the scien-tific quality of both articles and review processes of academic journals they were familiarwith.

The Ranking with over 1,500 journals covers all fields of business administration (e.g., man-agement, marketing, finance, accounting) and related areas (e.g., economics, psychology,political science). The evaluation scale ranged from 1 (very low) to 10 (very high). The re-sults were adjusted according to the different experience levels of the respondents.

[Editor’s note] In order to keep the JQL to a manageable length, lower-ranked journals(ranking D&E) of the VHB list were only added if they already featured in the JQL. The sameprinciple was applied to German-language journals.

Journals that were ranked by less than 10 (but more than 5) respondents, were only includedif they (a) already featured in the JQL or (b) had a score of A or A+. These journals are indi-cated with a letter score in brackets, e.g. (A).

The list also included a range of engineering and computer science journals that were not in-cluded in the JQL as they were seen as less relevant to Management/Business/Economics.

BJM04 — British Journal of Management 2001 Business & Mgmt RAErankings

Published as Geary, J.; Marriott, L.; Rowlinson, M. (2004) Journal Rankings in Business andManagement and the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise in the UK, British Journal ofManagement, vol. 15, pp. 95-141.

This list is based on the premise that academic staff in institutions with a higher RAE ratingwill tend to publish in higher-quality journals. Journals are therefore rated based on the fre-quency with which they are included in each of the seven RAE ratings (5*, 5, 4, 3A, 3B, 2, 1).Theoretically this means that a journal’s score could run from 1 (only cited in RAE submis-sions from institutions with a 1 – lowest – rating) to 7 (only cited in RAE submissions from in-stitutions with a 5* – highest – rating). Since academics in institutions rated 1 or 2 tend topublish very little, the practical range is approximately 3-7. The BJM04 list includes 562 jour-nals that accounted for 83% of the citations in the RAE submissions.

[Editor’s note] To prevent small sample idiosyncrasies, the journal had to have 10 or moreobservations in order to be included in the JQL. This means that, contrary to most other lists,some excluded journals are in fact very high level journals in which few British academics inBusiness & Management have published (e.g. Academy of Management Executive , Journalof Applied Psychology etc.).


7.0 Highest; only cited in RAE level 5* submissions

1.1-6.9 Intermediate scores reflect the frequency with which the journal was cited ateach RAE level, weighted against the RAE level.

1.0 Lowest; only cited in RAE level 1 submissions

Cra04 — Cranfield University School of Management June 2004

This list provides guidelines to staff on which journals they should consider submitting theirpapers to. Journals have been given a “project quality grading” – a new system which will beemployed by the RAE (Research Assessment Exercise) 2008 and will probably approximatethe following scale.

It should be noted that the grading for each journal is the School’s view, and while it may notnecessarily equate to the eventual RAE score, it will guide the School’s submission. Theprojected grading has been produced using a large number of internal and external sources:internal ranking from other top business schools and external rankings including the FT listhave been consulted; and the availability of journal impact factors has also been taken intoaccount.

[Editor’s note] If a journal of the Cranfield list was not already included in the JQL (which wasrare), it was only added if it had a score of 3 or 4.

CI99, CI00, CI01, CI02, CI03 — Social Science Citation Index (1999-2003)The citation impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which the average article in ajournal has been cited in a particular year. It is defined by the Social Science Citation Indexas a ratio between citations and citable items published. The SSCI impact factor is a reason-able and relatively objective assessment of journal impact. Whatever the deficiencies of thismeasure, it does seem by casual inspection that there is a significant correlation between

citation impact and perceived quality. Impact scores for five years allow the evaluation oftrends in journal impact.
