WHAT YOU NEED FOR COSTUMES:

The costumes for Twelfth Night will be kept very simple, and are intended to suggest the Elizabethan Age. Please use the following guidelines to create your costume:

ALL – SHOES SHOULD NOT BE TENNIS SHOES. Wear ballet, jazz or tai chi shoes, dress shoes, boots or slippers – depending on character.

CHARACTERS:

Olivia You are in mourning and, as such, should be in black. A full-length skirt/dress. You are wealthy and upper class and may have jewelry. Maria & Ladies-in-waiting: Perhaps a leotard and tights or leggings for under dresses. Bright colors, long skirts. Viola (Cesario): As she is rescued from the sinking ship, she should wear a cape or large blanket/wrap in the first scene. She then disguises herself as a boy, so under the cape, wear dark tights, knee britches (sweats rolled to the knee work great!), white or off-white shirt, preferably oversized belted at the waist. Perhaps a cap. MALE CHARATERS You base is knee pants (sweats rolled to the knee work great!), large white/off-white shirt then add to it as suggested below. Sebastian:Viola’s twin so see if you can match each other’s pants, shirt and cap in general color and style. Valentine, Curio, Duke’s Attendant: Some nice vests (you serve the Duke!). Perhaps caps. Officers: Perhaps you can coordinate and match the colors of your vests or sashes so that you look like you serve in the same regiment. Belts. WE WILL PROVIDE DOWELS FOR SWORDS. Orsino: Something to indicate your status – perhaps a fancy cloak, sash, jewelry, etc. Antonio, Sea Captain: Lower class men – so vests can be leather, or none at all. Belts. WE WILL PROVIDE DOWELS FOR SWORDS Sir Andrew Aguecheek: He is VERY fancy – vest, big hat, etc. have fun with feathers, colors, etc.! Belt. WE WILL PROVIDE DOWEL FOR SWORD. Sir Toby Belch: He is a fallen knight – messy, slovenly. Belt. WE WILL PROVIDE DOWEL FOR SWORD Fabian: Basic men’s costume. Perhaps a fun hat! Malvolio: He may dress differently – probably all in black. Perhaps a long black choir robe. Feste: Have fun with lots of colors – think of a court jester. Priest:A black or brown long robe. Can wear a cross, sandals.
