Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Blessed Sacrament October 15, 2017

From The Pastor

Prophetic Obedience This article contains excerpts from the article, “Listening to the Spirit” in The Tablet, June 3, 2017, by Bradford E. Hinze, author of Prophetic Obedience: Ecclesiology for a Dialogical Church, Orbis Books.

In case you haven’t noticed, the church is different now! Theologian Bradford Heinz explains how. First-ly, Pope Francis’ orientation is toward evangelization, or a missionary model of discipleship, which arises from the Vatican II understanding of the Church as the people of God. It is an approach marked by relation-ships of encounter, mercy, tenderness and healing with a weary, wounded world—all led by the Spirit. In Evangelii Gaudium, he puts it succinctly, “In all the baptized, from first to last, the sanctifying power of the Spirit is at work, impelling us to evangelization.”

Second, Francis wants a to return to a synodal church, where the people of God journey together as a com-munity. He says that a synodal Church is one where listening is more than simply hearing. Here everyone has something to learn—the faithful, the priests and bishops, and the Bishop of Rome. All need to listen to each other and to the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of truth. Such a church must learn how to be synodal not only in the synod of bishops, but at all levels—in local communities, and in episcopal conferences—thus, his efforts to promote a “sound decentralization”. This means we must trust the work of the Spirit in the life of the local Church. Each is rooted in a particular peo-ple and culture, and each brings a particular charism to enrich the universal church. In this view there must be greater freedom for the bishops to exercise their au-thority on pastoral issues in light of local circumstanc-es and needs, and Francis validates their authority by citing their teachings in his own.

Third, in marked contrast to the restrictions often im-posed by his predecessors, Francis encourages honest dialogue and debate. He has welcomed discussion of topics long regarded taboo, including the place of gay people in the Church, the inclusion of divorced and remarried Catholics in its sacramental life, and the ad-mission of women and married men to ordained min-istries. True, this openness will lead to conflict and resistance, but Francis insists that it is necessary for

the Church to deepen its insight into the truth and to maintain its vitality.

Fourth, understanding the Church as the people of God has created a Church of, and for the poor. Who are the people of God, if not the poor! Francis has demonstrated this view in his homilies, blogs and tweets, by convening and participating in numerous World Meetings of Popular Movements in which Catholic activists collaborate with people of different faiths, and in local community campaigns focused on labor and economic issues, health care and the envi-ronment. In the spirit of John XXIII, Francis is insti-gating a season of Pentecost, a new spiritual wave im-plementing the teachings of Vatican II on the prophet-ic office of all the faithful and the collegiality of bish-ops. By advocating a missionary discipleship, and by pursuing synodality and grassroots democratic civic engagement marked by a preferential option for the poor and environment, he is helping to make the Church as the people of God a concrete reality. And he invites us to respond in a spirit of prophetic obedi-ence.

Prophetic obedience asks us to listen to and respond, not only to the Word of God, but to the Spirit encoun-tered in the aspirations and cries of God’s suffering people and to the groaning of our damaged natural environment. It doesn’t mean blind capitulation to au-thority, nor is it a mindless following of the mob. It demands deep personal and communal discernment, heeding the signs of the times, honestly facing and wrestling with them. It does not mean we succumb uncritically to received opinions or accepted tradi-tions, but rather testing and examining these in the light of the living faith of the Church, recognized and received in the sensus fidei (where the people of God exercise sacred teaching authority). Francis is showing us what this model of discipleship looks like. It calls for the hard work of prophetic dialogue with members of the Church, with those on the fringes of it, with an-gry or alienated Catholics, with other Christians, and with people of other faiths and other world views. We have something to learn from all of them and we have something precious to give back in return.

Daily Prayer for Our Priests

O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests; for your unfaithful & tepid priests; for your priests laboring at home or abroad in distant mission fields; for your tempted priests; for your lonely & desolate priests; for your young priests; for your dying priests; for the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you the priests dearest to me: the priest who baptized me, the priests who absolved me from my sins, the priests at whose Masses I assisted & who gave me Your body & blood in Communion, the priests to whom I am indebted any other way especially (name….) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart, and bless them abundantly in time & in eternity. Amen. --St. Therese of Lisieux
