DISASTER UPDATE AND PRAYER FOR CALIFORNIA: We're getting reports from several of

our congregations in California that many of their members have already had to evacuate. Please pray with us: Dear gracious Father in heaven, You promise to walk with Your people through water and fire. As flames burn and threaten in California, we ask for Your mercy and protection. Provide for those who have lost or been forced from their homes. Be with the firefighters and workers who serve tirelessly and selflessly. For all those who face difficulties and fears as a result of the fires, let them find refuge and hope in Your Son, Jesus, the Savior of the whole world. Let all Your baptized people proclaim Christ and love others in His name in the midst of this and every situation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

THE “POPPY”— THE FLOWER OF REMEMBRANCE

On Remembrance Day everyone wears a poppy, a reminder of the blood-red flower which grew in the fields where many men died. Much of the fighting was done in a place called “Flanders”. This was during the war of 1914—1918. Every Spring, the soldiers fighting in the trenches noticed the red flowers blooming on the battlegrounds. And as more and more of their friends were killed, the soldiers noticed that the poppies bloomed over the graves.

When the war was over and when the soldiers came home, they still thought of all their friends who were buried in Flanders. Each time they thought of the graves, they thought of the poppies which grew around the graves. Then the men who came back from the war decided that they would wear a poppy each year to show that they still remembered their friends. November 11th was the day on which the fighting stopped in 1918. The men who had been in the war picked that day each year to wear a poppy. Other people who had not been in the war, but who loved the soldiers who had been killed, also wanted to show that they remembered the dead. so they also wore a poppy. There were not enough real poppies to go around. Then some of the men who were wounded, and couldn’t work at other jobs, began to make poppies out of cloth. That is why today everybody wears a poppy which is not a real flower but which reminds us of the flowers which grew over the graves of the men who died. For many years after the first war, children stood with their parents on “Remembrance Day”. Everybody was silent, and everybody wore a poppy and they all thought hard about the men who were killed. By the time many of the children grew up, there was another war. They boys who were now young men went to war. Many of them went to the same places as the men they used to remember. In the fighting in those places, a lot of these young men died. When the second war was over, more people than ever wanted to wear a poppy; now there were more dead soldiers than ever to remember. There were also sailors and airmen. All of these people went to war to protect Canada. They went to war to protect the people who were in Canada then, and also the people who would be born in the future—people like us. They died so that you could enjoy all the good things in your life. They died so that your home would be safe, so that you would be given a chance of going to school and going to the church of your choice. They also died so that you could make friends with whomever you chose. So perhaps you didn’t know these men who died in war. But they knew you. They wanted you to live in peace.

Therefore, on Remembrance Day, when everyone wears a poppy and stands in silence it

is like a “Thank You” to all those who died for us.

Thank you letter for our donations of “We Care Kits”.

Greetings, On behalf of Canadian Lutheran World Relief, thank you very much for your donation that recently arrived at our Winnipeg warehouse. Because of your support we are able to place essential aid into the hands of men, women and children around the world that desperately need your help. Together in 2018 we dispatched three containers of supplies to Mauritania, Liberia and Cameroon. These shipments benefited many children, and elderly. For families that have already lost so much a warm quilt or a carefully prepared We Care kit means a lot. We are happy to report that in 2018 the We Care program with your help shipped 13790 quilts and blankets and 7807 We Care kits. Together we were able to send 31,858 kg of aid, valued at over $303,784. We know that with your help we will be able to do so much more in 2019. The challenges facing the world’s poor are immense, but together we have the opportunity to make a positive change in the lives of those displaced by war, famine and natural disaster. Thank you very much for your continued support of CLWR and the /We Care Program/. Sincerely, Ian Mair, We Care Program Assistant Canadian Lutheran World Relief (CLWR) 549 King Edward Street, Winnipeg, MB R3H 0N9

We are currently collecting items for 2 areas – the Nearly New Table and the Children’s Area with toys, games and books. (children’s books only – no others please). We would appreciate items being brought in and placed in the small room off the Sunday School end of the Fellowship hall. Please note that these donations need to be of good quality & in good condition. Silent Auction – could you offer something for that? Please speak to Judy Mason as items go directly to her. Please note that for this area, we are looking for donations of new items and would appreciate knowing their value so Judy has an idea of where to start the minimum bid. (something you buy or make to donate; a gift that has never been used; for

anything else or other suggestions talk to Judy.) Donations for the remaining tables (crafts, baking & deli) should still please be brought in Friday, Nov. 22. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

SHOEBOX GIFT

Operation Christmas Child has become a Holiday tradition for many of us here at Christ Church. The love and care put into every shoebox gift has changed the

lives of children worldwide, and I think we can say it has changed us as well. Together, let’s continue to make these children an important part of our Christmas celebration

by extending Christ’s love and compassion.

HOW TO PACK YOUR SHOEBOX

1. Pick up a designated shoebox from the narthex.

2. Decide on the category and age. Girl/Boy 2-4; 5-9; 10-14 3. Fill the box, mark it and put an elastic around it. 4. Enclose a $10.00 cheque for shipping and put it in the offering basket and the congregation will send a combined donation - saving Samaritan's Purse money. 5. Drop the box off here at Christ Lutheran Church by Sunday, November 10th.

Operation Christmas Cheer

To share the joy of Christmas with those in our community

who are less fortunate than we are, the “Outreach Committee” is planning to distribute, again this year,

complete Christmas turkey dinner packages. We are asking for confidential referrals from our members. Last year we helped 25 families by making up 25 baskets.

We need your help by:

Providing us with confidential referrals which can be placed into a box located in our church narthex

Donating the funds required for the purchase of perishable and non-perishable food items which will be purchased just before the packages are distributed

Letting the Outreach Committee, Judy Mason—905-641-7546

Howard Bogusat—905-468-3566 know if you would be willing to help package baskets

Praying that this project is a success and that those who receive these gifts are touched by the joy and wonder of our Saviour’s birth and by His love for each one of us.

(please note that we are collecting “monetary donations”

ONLY for this project)

Thank You!
