A Refl ec on from Fr. James

The parable of tenants in the Gospel today tells us of God’s pa ence and jus ce. It also invites us to refl ect on our responsibility to accomplish the mission God entrusted to us in life and the consequences of failing to do God’s WILL. We are told the landowner was pa ent with the tenants and forgave them several mes. However, rather than apprecia ng this virtue, the tenants took advantage of the owner’s pa ence. In the end, his judgment and jus ce prevailed on the tenants.

This passage reminds us that we must all face the consequences of our choices in life at the end me. This parable raises a number of ques ons for us. We ask ourselves, “How pa ent am I with other people and even with myself? Do I take God’s mercy and love for granted? Do I ignore or underrate God?” We learn from this story that God gives everyone enough me to accomplish our mission in life. His pa ence with us is boundless and God is always ready to give us another chance to repent and amend our lives. We must all render an account to God on how well we lived our life and face the consequence of all our ac ons in life at the end of me. Let us strive to seek the will of God, trus ng in his love and mercy, and unlike the tenants, be mindful of his generous blessings.

October Devo on: In the Catholic Church, the month of October is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary as the Month of the Rosary, commonly known as “October Devo on.” The Church encourages every Catholic to make an eff ort to pray the Rosary every day throughout the month of October. There is a very rich history behind the October Devo on. This can be traced back to the origin of the Rosary in 1206. At that me, the Church was in crisis as the result of the infl uence of Albigensian heresy. It was then that the Blessed Mother introduced the Rosary to St. Dominic in a vision as a powerful weapon to defeat the heresy that plagued the Church.

As a result of the pandemic, our parish Rosary Group is not able to pray the Rosary in person before the daily Mass this year. However, I s ll encourage everyone to remember to pray the Rosary daily, individually or as a family.

Thank you and remain blessed,

Fr. James

Liturgy of the Word with ChildrenToday’s Gospel takes place in a vineyard (Mt 21: 33-43). The owner builds a beau ful place to grow grapes and then rents it out to some people, leaving them in charge of the vines. He leaves them and goes off on a journey. When he returns, he sends his family to collect a part of the produce they have grown. The people who rented the vineyard act selfi shly. They don’t want to give anything to the owner, instead keeping it all for themselves.

This story reminds me of the beau ful life God has given each one of us. God gi s us with bodies and minds and souls when we are born and then helps us grow into something wonderful. Then God asks us to share with others all of these special gi s we’ve grown. God wants us to love all of the people around us. The people in the vineyard were selfi sh and wanted all of the grapes for themselves, but God wants us to share the beau ful things we have grown with our friends, our families, and our neighbors. When we share with others, we are helping God share his love through us. What gi s can you share this week?

Religious Educa on UpdateWe are already into our fourth week of religious educa on and so happy to see the children! With all of the restric ons and concerns the pandemic has caused, we are especially grateful for all of the me parents and grandparents are dedica ng to their child’s learning - truly a celebra on of the Domes c Church.

This year has caused all of us to pause and reimagine what faith forma on can look like. As Catholics, we are fortunate that ours is a faith that is lived and shared in our daily lives, as well as through the liturgy and sacraments. Even though we are not able to meet as frequently in person, we are s ll able to pray, learn and celebrate Mass together within our own family, and with our parish community, whether it be in person or in our own homes.

Let us pray that the Holy Spirit con nues to strengthen and inspire our hearts and minds as we discover new ways to live and share the Good News with those around us.

St. Francis of Assisi*(1182-1226)October 4Son of a wealthy merchant, Francis’ aimless adolescence ended when a failed military expedi on led to his imprisonment and complete breakdown. Once home, Francis rediscovered God in the beauty of nature and the ugliness of human suff ering, caring for lepers, praying in the li le church of San Damiano, whose crucifi ed Jesus he heard calling, “Repair my house, Francis, which is falling into ruins.” Francis sold his possessions—and his father’s—to fulfi ll this command. When his father objected, Francis disrobed: “I return the clothes, your name, and all you gave me: God alone is my Father now.” Later, the pope would dream of a ragged friar stretching forth a single hand to prop up the crumbling papal Cathedral of Saint John Lateran. Francis indeed helped rebuild the universal Church, founding the Friars Minor (Franciscans), dying at a young forty-four, bearing the s gmata of the Christ whose living icon he remains—in the Church and far beyond it. ~ Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. A Note From The Principal Dear Parishioners,

Fall is offi cially here! As we move into October we celebrate the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. Our 4th-grade students led the Blessing of the Pets a er Mass on Friday, October 2. It looked a li le diff erent this year due to social distancing. In the past, our en re student body would meet at the St. Francis statue in our courtyard and hold up photos of their pets to receive a special blessing from Father, followed by the 4th graders’ rendi on of “All Creatures of Our God and King.” It’s a charming tradi on that we all pray will resume next year.

This year, however, due to the pesky Coronavirus, the 4th graders led the Mass at St. Benedict, while students watching Mass from their classrooms held up a photo of their pet(s) as Fr. Wilfred provided a blessing. Our virtual students logged in from home simply gathered their pets at the computer to receive Father’s blessing!

This is just one of many yearly tradi ons we celebrate at SJB that reminds us of how blessed we are to have the opportunity to educate the whole child -- spiritually, academically, socially, emo onally, and physically.

We are almost half-way through the fi rst trimester with a feeling of accomplishment having survived the stringent safety protocols of Phase I of the school’s reopening. We thank God that all have remained healthy and con nue to pray for a decrease in local infec on rates (“benchmarks”), which will allow us to proceed to Phase II and an easing of protocols. Un l then, we’ll stay the course.

Blessings for a wonderful fall weekend!
