GLENDALE, ARIZONA PAGE 3

Even the briefest glance at today’s Gospel (Mark 10: 2-

16) recalls with stomach-churning anguish the two moral issues blaring from recent news. While reports of sexual misconduct encircle a Supreme Court candidate, Jesus proclaims the good and the bad regarding sexual relations. And with the Church reeling from accounts of bishops who did not protect children, Jesus shows us that children are models of his father’s King-dom. To ignore the application of the Gospel to these events is to ignore what Jesus himself is teaching us this Sunday. When we actually listen to Jesus, his good news can calm our anxieties and keep us focused on the right and the wrong from God’s per-spective. By the time you read this article, the FBI investigation will have already shared its conclusions, but whether they cor-roborate accusations of assault and physical aggressiveness, dispute them or prove inconclusive, a new awareness of male misbehavior, from puberty to adulthood, is inspiring a new standard for the treatment of women and girls. The #MeToo and #WhyIDidntReport stories are gaining national attention. What does Jesus say to this? When religious authorities asked him a question about divorce to test him, they knew that men held all the power. Only men could divorce their wives. Jesus’ response was to stress unity (“they are no longer two but one flesh”) and permanence (“what God has joined together, no human being must separate”). Sexual relationships should re-flect the divine relationship: God’s love brings people together. God’s love does not quit; neither should we. While Jesus does condemn divorce in the strongest lan-guage, he does so “in the house,” not in the public square re-sponding to the Pharisees. That shows a sensitivity to those vic-timized by marriages not joined by God. In the house he spoke to his followers who were likely to understand the sacramental quality of a marriage that expresses God’s love. Today’s first reading expands on Jesus’ reference to the unitive purpose of sex in Genesis. The story of the creation of woman from Adam’s side is not intended to be a biological ac-count, but to explain the yearning (heartache or, close enough, rib-ache) a man has for his mate. Presbyterian minister Matthew Henry (d. 1714) put it this way: “The woman was made of a rib out of the side of Adam; not made out of his head to rule over him, nor out of his feet to be trampled upon by him, but out of his side to be equal with him….” The reading begins with a search for the “suitable part-ner” among all other creatures. St. Pope John Paul II, develop-ing his Theology of the Body, showed that what is suitable is finding one’s partner as a dignified person and forming commu-nity with him or her. “Formed in the image of God, also inas-much as they form a true communion of persons, the first man and the first woman must constitute the beginning and the mod-el of that communion for all men and women, who in any

To our parishioners from your St. Vincent de Paul Conference:

In today's Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples, "Let the children come to me. . . for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these." Be-cause of your generous donations at the '5th Sunday' collection for our Conference, you have brought the love and mercy of Je-sus to the children and their families by giving us the means to help them with food and assistance.

period, are united so intimately as to be one flesh.” (11/21/79) The dignity of every human person may be the reason why the account of Jesus welcoming children follows immedi-ately from the heady dispute about adult matters of marriage and divorce. Jesus reaches out to those who the culture perceives as weak, women and children, and in so doing calls us to see that they are essential to his father’s kingdom. Those who do not see this, and abuse these “little ones,” deserve to drown by the heavy millstones of their privileged power, as Jesus proclaimed in last week’s Gospel. Let us listen to Jesus and bring the Kingdom of his love and justice here on earth as it is in heaven. -Deacon Joe

PLEASE, REMEMBER TO SUPPORT THE BUSINESSES WHO ADVERTISE IN THE BULLETIN!

Our upcoming Retreat, Saturday, October 13, is very important. We will begin the day with Mass at 8AM in the Chapel. There are several changes coming to the way we, as Extraordinary Ministers and Lectors, participate in the Liturgy. The changes will be ex-plained during the retreat. These changes were dis-cussed and agreed upon during the last Liturgy Com-mittee meeting and will bring us more in line with the instructions approved by the United States Council of Catholic Bishops in the GIRM (General Instruction of the Roman Missal). If you CANNOT be there, it is important that you let Margaret Lojas know as soon as possible.([email protected], cell/text: 602-451-9205) The instruction should not take long, and the rest of the day will be spent learning more about our faith and renewing our commitment to the Lamb of God.

Iglesia Catolica Romana San Luis Rey PAGE 6

-Diacono Joe
