T oday we celebrate the Twenty -Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. esus once again calls us to take up our cross and follow him. Whenever I read this passage, I wonder why we have to take up crosses at all and what does the cross mean for us. For me the answer to the first question comes in the belief that God encourages free will and choice. Because of that we as humans will sin as we make both poor choices along with the good, thus human nature brings crosses. Whether we chose to believe in Jesus or not, crosses will be a part of our lives. For Christians our belief in Jesus Christ and the power of the cross give us hope that our own crosses also have meaning. Maybe not the salvific power of Jesus’ cross, but some other unknown good. So we have hope as we take up our crosses. This week as a nation we celebrate Labor Day. It is a day to celebrate the right that everyone has to work and to find dignity in the work we do. For many though the work we are doing is seen as a cross. We toil and lose sight of the gift that our work gives to us. Through work we can find our talents and use them to better the world. Through work we support our families and help them reach their potential. Through work we also continue God’s work in the world as we help those who have less than we do. This is what we celebrate and we pray that all our work will be useful to bringing about the Kingdom of God. This Wednesday evening at 6:30 PM the St. Kieran Women’s Club will be hosting their membership tea as well as celebrate the “Woman of the Year”. The night will include dinner by Scrementi’s and the presentation of the Woman of the Year. Thanks to the Women’s club board for all their work and we look forward to lively year ahead. Don’t forget that on Sunday September 18th we will celebrate our patron saint, St. Kieran and hold our parish picnic. Plans continue to unfold, but as always we need volunteers to make the picnic a success. Please check out this bulletin for more information on the picnic. Mid-Life Crisis will provide music for the afternoon. The Renew My Church process that Archbishop Cupich began last year has now moved into another phase. This past month we were given the preliminary group of parishes that we are to work with in the Renew My Church process. The parishes we are grouped with include St. Agnes, St. Ireaneus, St. Paul, and St. Rocco Oratory. We have begun to reach out to the parishes and pastors as we look to strengthen the local church as we work together on common interests. More will be coming. Finally, I would like to thank one of our parishioners who would like to remain anonymous for getting the skylight repaired in the day chapel. The window has loosened and the seals were damaged over the years and needed to be resealed. The work was completed this past week, and so far, it looks like it is holding. Thanks for your concern and help with St. Kieran. Notes from Fr. Our Patron Saint: St. Kieran of Clonmacnoise

Stories and Legends of St. Kieran Continued

The Vision of the Great Tree

While in the Aran Islands with St. Enda, both monks saw the same vision of a great and fruitful tree growing on the banks of a stream in central Ireland. This tree sheltered the entire island, its fruit crossed the sea surrounding Ireland, and birds came to carry off some of that fruit to the rest of the world. Enda interpreted this vision for his friend by saying, “The great tree is you, Kieran, for you are great in the eyes of God and all people. All of Ireland will be sheltered by the grace in you and many will be nourished by your fasting and prayers. Go to the center of Ireland and found your church on the banks of a stream.”

A Cow Comes to Kieran’s Aid

A careless monk dropped Kieran’s text of the Gospels into the lake surrounding Hare Island where it remained under water for a long time. On a summer day when the cattle went into the lake, the strap of Kieran’s book stuck to the foot of one of the cows. When the book was retrieved, it was dry with not a letter blurred or a page destroyed. See more of St. Kieran’s Clonmacnoise in our own church vestibule! A number of years ago, some of our parishioners visited the ruins of St. Kieran’s monastery at Clonmacnoise as they were on pilgrimage to the spot. An exhibit of some of the photographs that they took during that trip is on permanent display at the east side of the church vestibule. Our own Celtic Cross in the vestibule is a replica of the same cross from Clonmacnoise.

We will celebrate the feast of St. Kieran of Clonmacnoise the weekend of September 18, 2016.

Please join us for these special liturgies that honor our patron saint.

Saint of the Week

Exactly nine months after the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (on December 8,) we observe the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (September 8) in honor of Mary’s birth.

This is one of only three birthdays in the Church’s calendar, the other two being the birthdays of Jesus (December 25) and of John the Baptist (June 24.)

This solemnity, like all Marian days is less about Mary than it is about the wondrous work of God in Mary.

As Saint Andrew of Crete said in a homily long ago, “The . . birth of the Mother of God, is the prelude, while the final act is the . . union of the Word with flesh. We celebrate this mystery since it signifies for us a double grace . . . today this created world is raised to the dignity of a holy place for Him who made all things . . while the human is newly prepared

to be a divine dwelling place for the Creator.” (Office of Readings, Volume IV, p. 1371)

Hail, Mary, full of grace! Blessed are you among women

and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God,

pray for us sinners now and the hour of our death.

HELP THE DEACONS OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO!

A request from Deacons Labelle, Dutko, and Vasek: The deacons of Chicago will gather this year on October 9 to celebrate the Feast of St. Francis and their ministry. This St. Francis Day Dinner provides an opportunity for our community to come together in fellowship and an opportunity to raise the necessary funding to support the work and mission of the Diaconate Council, the association of all of Chicago’s deacons and wives. Monies raised at the dinner provide an education fund for deacons and wives, provide a mutual aid fund for deacons in need, provide funding for various charities supported by our community and provide operating funds for the Council. The Council’s primary sources of income are the St. Francis Day Dinner cash raffle and the event’s ad book. Raffle tickets can be purchased for $5 each or six tickets for $25. Cash prizes include one $1000 winner, one $500 winner, two $100 winners and six $50 winners. Tickets can be purchased as follows: (1) From any of the deacons in your parish, or (2) Mailing a check payable to “Diaconate Council” to the Office for the Diaconate, 816 Marengo, Forest Park IL 60130. (If ordering by mail, please include your address labels for your tickets stubs.) Raffle tickets will be mailed to you. Costs for ads in our event ad book are as follows: full page ad, $100; half-page ad, $60; quarter-page ad, $30. Another source of income at the event are the basket raffles, silent auctions, and live auctions. We are in need of both large and small items for these raffles and auctions. If you are interested in placing an ad, donating something for the raffles and/or auctions or would like more information, please call the Diaconate Office at (708) 366-8900. Please know that it is our privilege to serve the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago. We know that all of the deacons in the Arch appreciate your prayers and support!
