What is Twitter?Twitter is a microblogging social networking platform. It
allows you to post updates which show up in follower streams.

Why would someone follow you?
Individuals use Twitter to:• Share events and updates with friends• tell a company (or anyone else) that
you've had a great—or disappointing—experience with their business
• offer product ideas• learn about great offers.

Followers• Find followers by searching Twitter,
other networks, through email or through the suggested user function.
• Unlike FB, you may not know your followers.

Following Etiquette• Following too many, too fast will
suspend your account
• Follow those who follow you when appropriate (be aware of spammers)

Check profiles before following others
• High follower to following ratio should raise red flags.
• Check the activity level of the person you follow – don’t
follow abandoned profiles.

Twitter Lingo: The Tweet
• 140 Character limit (shoot for 125)• Sent to the whole Twitterverse (unless
specified private)• Similar to status update on FB, a group-
wide text or public instant messaging• Possible content includes links, images,
articles and updates

Twitter Lingo: @replies• Mention other users with the @ symbol
– This lets that user know you mentioned them– This also alerts your followers of the mention
• Reply to tweets by hovering over the tweet and clicking reply
• To private message, the other person must follow you as well (Direct Message or DM)

• Similar to a Forward in email• Add a comment after post with “/
comment” if there is room

Twitter• Hashtags are made up by users• Springfield, Missouri’s hashtag is #sgf• Keywords make good hashtags

Getting a Response
• Think of it as a cocktail party – people don’t talk to braggarts, salesmen or wallflowers
• People do like to talk about themselves. • Ask questions, join in the conversation.

Sharing Information
• People follow you for the information you have to share
• Shorten links to fit in the limited space with link shorteners like bit.ly
• Share your blog, links photos and videos, landing page URLs, contest information
• Respond to others’ posts for a reciprocal effect
