Content DevelopmentStudents will have varied experiences with shapes in the real world. Most will have an easy time identifying shapes, but may not understand or be able to verbalize the properties of shapes.Focus should be on the attributes that make up the shape with a focus on precise vocabulary. When introducing angles to students discuss the importance of angles in building things for example the angle of a stair makes it flat so we can stand on it.Exposing students to how shapes can be composed and decomposed will lay the foundation for fractions.

Day 1 Go Math lesson 11.3 may be used on this day to help students

make the connection between sides and vertices identifying specific shapes. Refer to the GCG for the essential areas of the lesson.

Students could use pattern blocks to identify the connection between vertices, faces, and specific shapes.

Day 2 Go Math lesson 11.4 may be used on this day to help students

find and count angles in a shape. Geo boards would be great to use on this day to help students

count angles on the board. Pattern blocks can also be given to students to help them count

angles. The focus of today is angle however, you may still want to ask

students to identify how many sides and vertices the shapes you are working with have.

Day 3 The focus of today is to sort shapes into categories based on

attributes such as sides and angles. Give the students opportunities to sort the pattern blocks into

categories and then discuss the ways they came up with. Farm Fences under the lesson ideas on the GCG could be used

on this day. Students have to create shapes based on specific criteria.

Go Math lesson 11.5 may also be used to supplement instruction on this day as well.

Day 4 Let students create ways to sort polygons, you could give

students the pattern shapes so they could physically move shapes into specific categories. The students then would need to identify the rule for the way that they sorted. Have discussions about the ways students came up with to sort the polygons.

The Shape Riddle Lesson under the lesson ideas in the GCG could be used on this day. The activity has students create polygons from riddles.
