I appreciate that it is not ideal for students to return to the start of the term on the 27th and then be away from school again on the 28th. However, when we tried to book Andrew early last year, the alternatives were times when there would have been a significant impact on exam preparation for senior students. On the night of April 28th, at 7.00pm, Andrew will again run a session for parents. Many of you will have attended his session at Taylors Lakes Campus last year and found the wisdom and practical advice shared with you to be of immense value. His session this year is titled: How to Succeed in the Senior Years of Schooling. The evening will have a very specific focus on older students and we are encouraging all Years 9 - 12 students to attend with their parents. When parents and children hear the same message together, very open and powerful opportunities become available for discussion. Parents of younger children are most certainly welcome to attend as well. The information evening with Andrew Fuller will be held in the Gymnasium, in the Sports and Performing Arts Building at the Keilor Campus. Commencement of construction of the new Keilor Junior School I am delighted to be in the position of advising all members of the College Community that the builders of our new Junior School will begin to mobilise onto the Keilor Campus on Tuesday April 5th. JUNIOR SCHOOL—TAYLORS LAKES CAMPUS I‟m sure all parents who were at last week‟s Junior School Assembly were as impressed as I was with our Junior School Captains and Vice Captains. Amala, Billy, Thomas and Emma hosted the assembly totally independently for the first time. They worked on the running sheet carefully a few days prior to the assembly and knew exactly what they wanted to present and how they wanted to go about it. This was a huge achievement for such young students. I look forward to many more assemblies to come under the guidance of our captains. During the first few weeks of the year the staff and I worked with our Junior School students to understand the protocols set out in the Junior School Assembly Essential Agreement. These were set up to encourage the students to realise that Assembly is a formal event that requires respectful behaviours. Teachers regularly remind the children of the following items in the agreement.

* Students are to enter the Multi Purpose Hall quietly as the music plays * Upon waiting for assembly to begin, the students are to sit quietly and listen to the music * Talking during presentations or in between items is not acceptable * Clapping after a performance or presentation is encouraged * Yelling out or making cheering/booing noises are not appropriate * Respect is to be shown to presenters at all times * Exiting of students after assembly is to be an orderly process where one class leaves at a time after parents have left I have been very pleased with how well the children are responding to being a part of a formal audience where they show respect to the presenters and performers. In order to encourage these expectations to continue, I would like to ask that parents also enter assembly quietly and listen to the wonderful music being played by Mrs Herdnandez while the children get settled. It is also important that there is a quiet audience during presentations. Not only is this respectful to those presenting, but it can be quite daunting to speak or perform in front of a large audience and the less distractions, the better. I also ask that toddlers are kept in seats to minimise distractions. We were treated to presentations from 3AC last week. They made interesting connections between aspects of Australia and Thailand as a part of their international study and then sang and played a song about Thailand. It was a wonderful performance that was enjoyed by all.

Jackson Rex from 3AC was a risk taker last week and performed a solo piece on his guitar to the Junior School at assembly. He proudly played „Ode To Joy‟ and was an absolute delight to listen to.

PUBLIC SPEAKING AT OVERNEWTON

Debaters Association of Victoria Round 1 We have our largest enrolment in the DAV Debating this year and had our best results for quite some years last Monday night. Six teams won and we had eight best speakers! It was great to see such an enthusiastic group of students all working together on their speeches as they made last minute adjustments on Monday afternoon. Their conduct was excellent and the excitement tangible as we arrived at the venue. Quite a few students had never debated competitively before and were thrilled to have either won their debate or received some encouraging feedback from the adjudicators.

This is a great start to the debating year. by Amanda Clifford, Public Speaking Co-ordinator

Student Experiences – UNYA Conference - 2011 The 2011 U.N.Y.A (United Nations Youth Association) State Conference held over the Labour Day long weekend, enabled students all across Victoria to participate in debates on current world wide issues. The topics discussed in the camp were on issues of: Biodiversity, Pharmaceutical Intellectual Property, Internet Freedom and the heated topic of HIV/AIDS. Each student represented a country and conducted research based on how each issue affected their country. The countries represented by Overnewton students included: India, Sweden, Italy, Costa Rica, Brazil and Singapore. Each student had the ability to interact with like-minded students and gain information not taught in a classroom. The State Conference was one of the many events run by U.N.Y.A which gives students the opportunity to gain an understanding of issues that are currently being faced around the globe. It is essential for students to take part in organisations and events, as it further educates them on issues that affect other young adults in other parts of the world.

Jona Villanueva – Year 12 (College Captain)

Meeting other participants was enjoyable and finding out some of us had mutual friends surprised me. The workshops UNYA provided were really helpful, especially preparing for our UNYA debate/ resolution.

Crystal Cheung – Year 12

The UNYA camp was really good. If I can, I will definitely be back next year. There were heaps of workshops, so it was educational as well as fun. It was really well organised and everyone was able to mingle with people from other schools.

Edward Buijs – Year 11

UNYA Victoria State Conference in 2011 was an amazing experience. Over 80 students from across the state met at Mt. Evelyn Oasis Camp to get together and have a mock United Nation style of debating. Along with this there were several workshops on economics, interactive problem solving, and just general discussions about current issues and the effect it would have on our respective countries. The main topic was both physical and mental health. We had the privilege of listening to a few guest speakers, who came and raised awareness about mental health in young adults, experiences for working as a doctor with no boundaries overseas and the things they had seen and the critical things they remembered. As well as all of this there were plenty of extra activities to participate in: a social on Saturday night for which the theme was 'Superheroes and Villains', downtime and a delegates vs. facilitators soccer match, which the delegates clearly won by 11-7. This year's state conference was amazing and I am definitely putting my name forward next year and would recommend everyone do the same.

We are lucky enough to now have our own assembly photographer. Jodie Staropoulos attends assembly each week and takes photos for us to use for displays, include in newsletters and keep as archives of our Junior School events. I would like to thank Jodie for her commitment to this position, it is greatly appreciated. Monday of last week was Harmony Day in the Junior School. This proved to be an exciting day for all involved. I was thrilled to chat to the children and hear their explanations of what Harmony Day was all about. The students were able to articulate what diversity meant to them and how this should be an accepted part of our lives. A variety of different activities were presented to the children in the different House groups. Two of our captains report on this special day later in Whispers. Last Tuesday, six of our Year 4 students represented Overnewton in the Divisional / Regional Swimming Carnival at Oak Park Pool. As always, they did us proud both with their swimming and behaviour on the day. Congratulations to - Matthew Fisicchia 4A Nicholas Georgolpoulos 4NJ Lachlan McKillop 4NW Ebony Mountjoy 4NW Emma Pollard 4NJ Gemma Reinmuth 4NJ The Junior School teachers and I are continually questioning our approach to teaching and learning and discovering the latest educational initiatives so that our Overtnewton students are working in the best possible educational settings with the best possible outcomes. Recently we have been looking at ways to implement strategies from the many years of research completed by professor John Hattie based on visible teaching and learning. This method encourages clear learning intentions and outcomes for the students. Visible teaching and learning occurs when the learning is the explicit goal: when there is feedback given by the teacher and sought by the student, and when there are active, passionate, and engaging people, including teachers, students, and peers participating in the act of learning. This is our aim and the environment we are setting up on a daily basis at Overnewton. More information on this philosophy will be shared with you over the coming months. Please be reminded that we will be having a special Easter Chapel service on Monday 4th April at 2.30pm. Year 4 students will have a part to play and all students will be singing songs to support the performance. Parents are most welcome.

HARMONY DAY FUN IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL AT

TAYLORS LAKES

By Billy Tzimos (Junior School Captain) and Isabella Halil (Edison House Captain)

The children at Taylors Lakes celebrated friendship, difference and teamwork on Harmony Day on Monday the 21st of March. The children were asked to dress up in the Harmony Day colour of orange and participate in fun activities that celebrated different cultures around the world. The children did this in their House groups so they could get to know children from other classes and discover how we are all connected. Some of the activities the children participated in were multicultural dancing, henna hands, greetings in other languages, places of worship and Harmony Day posters. School Captain Billy Tzimos thought that Harmony Day was a good day for the children to celebrate multiculturalism. Edison House Captain Isabella Halil, enjoyed

(Continued from page 2) working with other children in the Junior School stating, “I found it challenging working with the Preps to begin with, but it was so nice to see them smiling and having a go at designing their henna hands.” Both Billy and Isabella are looking forward to working with children in the Junior School this year.

MAKING CONNECTIONS

The Year 1G students had the privilege of working at Canowindra during Focus Week. We all wish to thank the Canowindra staff for this opportunity to meet the Year 9 students as they made connections with the Year 1 G students.

The Year 1 students were delighted to work alongside their buddies as they shared stories, created books and even learnt some new computer skills.

The Year 9 students cannot be praised highly enough for their outstanding attitude during the shared activities. Each of them was kind, caring, helpful and thoughtful.

The comment by one Junior School student “ I have never had so much fun at school!” was echoed by them all.

JUNIOR SCHOOL - KEILOR CAMPUS

Over the past few weeks our Year 3 and 4 students have been preparing the Chapel sessions with Reverend Kim. There has been a variety of presentations ranging from role-plays to films to musical items. As well as being entertaining, the students were able to communicate the Bible stories in a way that was easily understood by their peers. Chapel is a lovely time in our week where we come together for prayer, reflection and joyful singing. Recently there have been opportunities for families to see our classrooms in action. Our grandparents all came along to visit the Preps last week and this week we had our „Celebration of Learning‟ morning. This was a time for students to show their parents some of the terrific work they have been doing this term. The pride in their faces was evident and I am sure parents enjoyed the chance to have a little insight into the busy world of the Junior School classrooms. Another way in which parents are informed about classroom events is via the weekly diary slips. The aim of this little snapshot is for each year level to provide information about the work that is being covered and offer some links to Learning Beyond the Classroom. The feedback from families about the diary slips has been overwhelmingly positive and it is very affirming for us to know that it is helpful for busy families. Enjoy your week,

HOUSE LAPATHON

JUNIOR SCHOOL - KEILOR CAMPUS

On Monday 21st March we had our Junior School Lapathon which was a great success. All students were eager participants in the event, and tried their very best to do as many laps as possible around our Junior School. This year we saw a change of venue, down at the big lower soccer oval. It created a great atmosphere which promoted tremendous House spirit. Each lap run by students was worth 1 House point for their House team. Well done to everyone for „persisting‟ with their running, even when they were feeling puffed. At our next assembly on Monday 4th April, the results will be revealed! Your last chance to earn House points for Term 1 is in your

classroom on your House point charts, so keep trying your best to „get along‟ with others! You never know which House team will be holding the big trophy at the end of term, it could be yours!

COMMUNITY

Last Monday afternoon the Junior School teachers from Taylor Lakes and Keilor Campus came together to participate in a professional learning workshop, the first of several planned for the remainder of the year. The workshop was lead by Steve Willy, a literacy consultant who has strong connections to Independent Schools Victoria and considerable overseas experience. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Steve who will assist us to review our current practices and continue to develop our literacy program to benefit all our Junior School students.

YEAR 3 EXCURSION TO BENDIGO

On Tuesday we went to Bendigo - it was the best excursion ever! After a long bus ride, we went to Peppergreen Farm. We saw compost and how to grow tomatoes. We even got to taste one - they were yum! We also went to the Chinese Joss House, and saw lots of old things and heard about how to keep the evil spirits away. Next we went on the talking tram to the gold mine. We went underground 61metres. It was very cold and dark but we had helmets with lights on them. We were all tired when we got back.

WRITERS WORKSHOP

During our great experiences in Writers Workshop, we have been able to interact with the young Year 1s, and they have inspired us to write a book for them. The topics that were used in our books came from what the children like, such as sport, cartoons and fantasy type stories. They have taught us what a young child‟s life consists of. We Year 9s, have all put a lot of hard work and effort towards creating a children‟s book. At first we met with our Year 1 buddy and discussed what their interests were, so we had an idea of what they would like to read in a book. In our illustrations, some people got pictures by using electronical appliances such as Google or clip art, some did hand written illustrations. The book would consist of a title page, a dedication page inside the title page which would be dedicated to our buddy, and 12 pages of text and pictures. We tried to make the book simple, not complicated, so that it would not be too hard for the children to read, as a normal children story book would be.

WHOOPING COUGH (PERTUSSIS)

Whooping cough has been confirmed in our local community, so I have included a few brief notes about this infectious disease. Please note that infants under 12 months of age are at the highest risk of complications and death from whooping cough, so if you know you are in contact with very young children you need to take even more care. Whooping cough is a highly infectious disease, and is spread by respiratory droplets (coughing). A person with whooping cough is infectious just prior to and if untreated for up to 21 days after the onset of the cough. If treated, the person needs to have had 5 days of antibiotic treatment before they are no longer infectious, and can return to school or work. Please consult your doctor if you have any concerns.

This week marked the first week of the interschool competition that the Taylors Lakes Campus were able to host an opposition school and utilise it‟s home venues. The Taylors Lakes Campus played Sydenham Hillside – Sydenham campus while the Keilor Campus played away to Taylors Lakes Primary School. The morning turned to a cold affair but thankfully the rain held off until the morning‟s competition was over. Winning teams from today‟s matches were from the Taylors Lakes Campus girls‟ volleyball, open volleyball and the open soccer team. From the Keilor Campus open football, open netball, open soccer and girls‟ soccer.

YEAR 7

At the end of the first half of the summer season the girls‟ tennis team is undefeated. All players have shown much improvement since they first took to the court in the first round. It was another dominant performance from the girls only dropping two sets throughout the afternoon. It was a close game in the basketball A match this week with the Overnewton team only winning by 2 points. Harrison Bult top scored with 15 points while Norman Dimitrijevic and Riley Caines were integral to the win by their consistent efforts. The B team did not have a good game this week only managing one field goal and 1 point from the free throw line. They have now some time to reflect and hopefully come back stronger in the second half of the season later in the year. The girls from the softball team had a great match winning by 7 runs this week. The girls displayed good listening skills when on bases and were able to follow the directions of the coach and subsequently stole many a base during the match. It was a good overall performance by the girls from the soccer team blitzing the opposition 6 goals to 0. Natalie Lauriola contributed 2 goals for the afternoon while singles came from Rebecca Abeysiri, Chantelle Dawoud, Emma Baddeley and Faith Amato. Both of the volleyball teams had a loss this week but the best game was had by the B team who had a very close scoring game. When totaling the entire points scored during the match the team only went down by 3 points. Sabina Wong, Cassandra Torey and Maria Ignatidis all served well while the other team members tried hard all game. The boys from the table tennis team had a great match this week only dropping three matches all afternoon. Best player went to Joshua McNab for his 4 sets – 0 win and the great sportsmanship displayed throughout the game. Winners: Girls‟ tennis (10 sets – 2); boys‟ basketball A (35 pts – 33); girls‟ softball (15 runs – 8); girls‟ soccer (6 goals – 0); boys‟ table tennis (13 matches – 3)

YEAR 8

The cricket team came up against the team that denied them the trophy in Year 7 this week and scored a much deserved win. Good bowling from the team enable the opposition‟s score be limited to a „makeable‟ 85 runs. Jake Sexton and Daniel Raniolo were the best of the batters with 22 runs each but it took a consistent effort by all of the team to get the win. Sarah Rjanzcew-Djurdjevic won her singles and doubles set, 6-1, 6-0 and this is a sign of her improvement over the past season and a half in the tennis team. Although it was another very comfortable win by the team, some players still need to build awareness of their position on the court and how it affects their ability to take control of a rally. Leading scorers from the basketball games were Zak Wunhym (22 pts), Michael Harsic (21 pts), Adam Mandic (7 pts), James Paraskevopoulos and Carlo Rosales (5 pts) and Josh Cittadini (4 pts). Goal scorers in the hockey match were Anton Longhitano (3), Matthew Bell and Jake Pierias (1 goal apiece). Best on ground

for this hockey match were Andrew Thomas, Ben Spitteler, Crisdion Krstevski, Anton Longhitano and Ben Talevski. A special mention needs to be given to Chris Pavlidis who played goalie in this game. Natasha Marinkovic scored the only Overnewton goal in the soccer match. Alaana Daalmeyer and Dimitra De Losa were named best on ground; however, a special mention to the following girls who contributed in a positive manner throughout the game – Alaana Clinnick, Kim Van, Natalija Mancevski and Selin Huseyin. Winners: Girls‟ volleyball A (4 sets – 0); girls‟ volleyball B (4 sets – 0); boys‟ cricket (97 runs – 85); boys‟ softball (16 runs – 7); girls‟ tennis (11 sets – 1); boys‟ basketball B (30 pts – 15); boys‟ basketball A (47 pts – 21); girls‟ soccer (1 goal – 0); boys‟ table tennis (10 matches – 1)

Seniors This round marks the last round in the summer season for the senior students. Many of the results from this round influenced the finals make-up in many of the sports. Last round losses saw many of our teams miss out on a finals placing but we would like to congratulate those teams that did make it to the summer finals this year. They are the 1st girls‟ softball, 1st girls‟ soccer, 2nd boys‟ softball and 3rd boys‟ basketball teams and wish them the best in next weeks finals. As usual a lack of experience was compensated with vigor and enthusiasm by the boys from the 2nd hockey team. They have developed into a tight knit unit this term and did themselves, their coach and school proud with the improvement shown throughout the season. Best players were Michael Larin, Joel Clinnick, Mitchell Koroneos, James Lautier and Matthew Bontorno. Further highlights of the last round of matches were from the mixed touch footy teams, both won their final match. David Nguyen scored a hat trick and Sharon Huynh scored the first try from a female for the entire season. Ashley Cukavac was named most valuable player in the girls‟ soccer team for her efforts in goals. Mitchell Homer was the stand out player in the boys‟ table tennis match. Joseph Pensa scored 14 points in the 2nd boys‟ basketball match with Troy Duca scoring 21 points in the 1st game. Emily Pham was best on court in the girls‟ tennis game for her 6 sets – 0 win. In the 1st girls‟ soccer match Lauren McIntosh saved a penalty shot and Romy Doric scored two goals. All girls from the 1st softball team were fantastic securing the win this week. In the 3rd basketball team John Van Der Rest scored 17 points. James McKay displayed some great rebounding in the 4th boys‟ basketball game. Hashan Weerasooriya batted 40 runs (retired) in the 1st cricket match while Patrick Dunster had bowling figures of 3/6 in the same game. Shawn Prasad top scored in the 2nd boys‟ cricket match and Vedant Khanna showed a lot of potential, despite losing his table tennis match. Winners: 1st boys‟ basketball (53 pts – 16); 1st girls‟ softball (16 runs – 11); 1st girls‟ soccer (2 goals – 0); 1st girls‟ tennis (6 sets – 5); 3rd boys‟ basketball (43 pts – 30); 4th boys‟ basketball (21 pts – 8); 2nd boys‟ softball (16 runs – 5).

Cont’d

Jessica Farrugia has made the State Championships again this year in backstroke. This represents two years in a row. She clearly dominated her divisional heats and had a clear win in her backstroke regional final. It was very tight finish in her butterfly race being nudged out of the top two positions by only a small margin. Our other state representative is John Santi, first time to this level of competition. He motored away from the opposition in his breaststroke divisional heat but it was a tighter finish in the final. All onlookers held their breath when John made a final lunge to the wall and took the first place by milliseconds. We wish both John and Jessica all of the best in the State Championships that will be held at Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre on Thursday 7th April.

CLASSROOM ASSISTANCE

Classroom Assistance positions for both Keilor and Taylors Lakes Campuses will be advertised through the Whispers on a weekly basis. Most positions require a regular weekly commitment for the whole year, although in specific cases you may be able to alternate with another parent or join a roster. You are invited to apply for any position, even if your child is at another campus or different year level. Younger siblings or sick children cannot accompany parents whilst on duty. A blue Classroom Assistance folder is kept at the Front Office at each campus to record your hours.

Recording Hours A reminder to parents that it is your responsibility to record your own hours for classroom assistance and excursions in the folder at the front office labelled Classroom Assistance. The roster is currently being drawn up for Yard Duty (Term 2) at the Keilor Campus.

Those who are currently on the roster must also contact me if they wish to continue Yard Duty in Term 2.

Hours are as follows:

Lunchtime 1.00pm to 2.15pm Before School 8.30am to 9.00am After School 3.20pm to 3.50pm

Casual hours are also welcome.

Please contact Mary Tsavdaridis on 0417 144 443 or [email protected] to register. I look forward to having you on our team.
