F or Rick Eckersley, the idea of the perfect weekend setting entails gentle, rolling hills abundant with eucalypts and native grasses. In pursuit of a getaway that would allow him the space and the freedom to do

“whatever he pleases whenever he pleases”, Eckersley sought a country setting for a second home.

After an insightful friend tipped him off about the ’80s-style house for sale at Flinders on the Mornington Peninsula, Eckersley was quick to realise the potential that lay beyond the English-style rose garden. The property’s large shed and guest cottage made it possible to combine work and leisure with separate spaces for designing and creating.

Both agree that the key to the success of the property’s sustainable garden is drainage – much consideration and preparation of the soil had been given to get the garden through wet spells, and deep mulch beds were built to get through the dry.

The house itself also received an overhaul. With the blue-and-white chintz now gone, the house has been brought into the now through modern furnishings and open-plan living. A galley-style kitchen has made way for a more modern island bench, conducive to long cups of tea after a morning’s session tending the garden.

Knocking down walls to create open-plan living spaces was first on the agenda. Ripping out carpets and replacing them with slate tiling throughout was the obvious choice to connect the exterior and interior spaces. Chosen for its practicality as well as its aesthetic

appeal, the slate-tile floor is not only able to withstand muddy boots and dusty winds, it also adds texture and visual interest to the open space.

The kitchen’s charcoal-grey backdrop adds a sense of drama and ambience, while the limed lining boards of the pitched ceiling add a sense of height and lightness to the internal living areas. Eckersley maintains that “everything looks good against grey”, and chose to add accents of colour through pieces such as the red Rope Chair by Kenneth Cobonpue and original bronze Artichoke pendant hung over the dining table.

It is the biological pool and natural billabong, however, designed and built by Eckersley with a jetty and pontoon, that gives the landscape the aspect of an oasis. Referred to as a “sweet water pool”, a man-made lagoon that encourages plant life, which in turn effectively filters the water ensuring no chemicals are needed. But while the bio pool offers a stunning watery vista, swimming in it is not to everyone’s liking. There are currently plans under way to include a salt chlorinator, which will mean the swimming water, separated from the plant life, will be less pond-like in terms of algae levels and slime.

As is his nature, the garden and house are a continual work in progress for their current custodian. For now, though, reclining on a family-heirloom wrought-iron bed that is covered in plumped mattresses and worn linen, it would appear that Eckersley has found his nirvana within the landscape he has created. \

D anish designer Poul Henningsen began his long collaboration with Louis Poulsen Lighting in 1925. During his time at

the celebrated lighting company, Henningsen’s pioneering work concerning the relationship between light structures, shadows, glare and colour reproduction came to the fore. Particularly interested in exploring man’s need for light with the way in which it is distributed though lampshades, Henningsen designed the PH Artichoke lamp based on 72 “leaves” on 12 steel arches. Designed to ensure the light source was not visible from any particular angle, the 12 rows of six leaves each offers diffused light with a unique pattern.

Henningsen, a man of firm principles and ideals claiming “all political art is bad - all good art is political” is widely recognised as a thought provoker who liked to turn things upside down, much like the upside-down-looking Artichoke lamp. The original light shades was designed for the Langelinie Pavilion restaurant in Copenhagen in 1948, and are still hanging there today. In 2008, Loius Poulsen celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Artichoke Light with the release of 50 PH Artichoke lamps in gold. \ SM
