REQUIRED TOOLS Any HWOPS person tasked with maintenance of TX SIB and Trunk cables is required and expected to be trained in performing this task (which requires special care and attention). In other words should not be performing this task on production TX router for the first time.

In this document “Trunk cable” is used to refer to the cable that connects the SIBs in the SCC with the SIBs in the LCC. The term VCSEL cable is actually a cable that resides inside a SIB and is not touched by a customer.

HWOPS person tasked with this is expected to have in their possession the following:

1. Powderless Nitrite gloves to eliminate opportunity of oil residue or dry skin from transferring to optical interfaces.

2. Special Compressed Air Duster [reference: Ultrajet® All-Way duster from ITW Chemtronics - see slides 3 to 5]

3. Dry cloth Cleaning tool and Adapter [reference: USConec's In-Bulkhead-Connector (I.B.C.) Cleaning Tool and Adapter- see slides 6-10 and slides 18-21]

4. 99.9% Ultra Pure Anhydrous Alcohol such as from PURETRONICS [reference: Fry’s electronics - see slides 11-12] – (note this is not the regular isopropyl alcohol)

5. Lint-free swabs – [reference 3M - see slide 13]6. The TX Loopback tool kit that is shipped with the purchase of the TX [see slide 14, 15]

7. Adhesive Floor Mats around TX SCC and LCC systems (explained in slide 17, bullet 2)

NOTE FROM USCONEC PRODUCT MGR ON 8037 REPLACING 7104From: [email protected] <snip>

The 8037 is the tool you want to specify when using the 8485 adapter. The 8037 was built specifically for cleaning the Molex HBMT and ARRAY series connectors. The 8037 also does an excellent job cleaning standard multimode MPO connectors. The 8037 is now the cleaning pistol that both Molex and Plexus use in production for making the assemblies for Juniper Networks.

The 8037 spring was built to have a specific compression range so that the IBC pistol has the optical amount of force for cleaning the MT ferrules in the Molex connectors. The 8037 tool housing is also keyed differently than the 7104 to help the tool align in the adapter.

TX LOOPBACK CONNECTOR AND ADAPTER -CAUTION

The content in the second URL called out in the previous slide provides details on how to trouble shoot using the fiber optic array loopback connector and adapter. In addition to noting that using these loopback adapter and connector requires special technique and care please note that loopbacks are the SINGLE largest contributor to contaminated SIB-L and SIB-S end faces if proper care is not taken in cleaning them properly prior to every use.

Loopbacks must be protected with clean dust covers when not it use and stored in a clean location.

Thus, if you don’t have the tools and the training to clean and use the loopbacks – DON’T use them.

GENERAL GUIDELINESTX SCC-SIB, LCC-SIB and Trunk cable maintenance guidelines

1. Prior to any physical maintenance service activity that is going to be done on a TX, suggest 24 to 48 hrs in advance of the scheduled service actions, the removal (vacuuming) of all equipment in the area adjacent to the TX SCC and LCCs area to remove any possible dust or contaminants which may become airborne during service activity.

2. Suggest the implementation in advance of all TX SCC and LCC service work the placement of Adhesive floor mats in areas on service isles surrounding the TX systems. Shoes is a major source of contaminants becoming airbone during service activity and hence this suggestion. Clean room Adhesive floor mats can be sourced from 3M. http://www.shop3m.com/3m-static-control-and-clean-room-mats-04txlcqj51.htmlhttp://www.3m.com/

3. Suggest personnel performing service activity wear Powderless Nitrite gloves to eliminate opportunity of oil residue or dry skin from transferring to optical interfaces.

4. Prior to each use of loopback connector and adapter (slide 13), clean loopback optical surfaces in accordance with procedures detailed in next few slides.

5. Suggest while all service work is performed on TX SCC and LCC systems that optical interfaces are covered to reduce opportunity of airborne contamination reaching an optics surface.

HIGH LEVEL CLEANING INSTRUCTIONSUpon a SIB in a TX going into check state, it is expected that a JTAC case is opened and various needed information (which is beyond scope of this document) is collected and attached to the case. If JTAC engineer identifies that the reason for the SIB check state falls under scenario where on a particular path between SCC-SIB and an LCC-SIB, one of the three components SCC-SIB<x> or Trunk Cable connecting it to an LCC-SIB<x> can be at fault, then the JTAC engineer will recommend that many a time simply performing some cleaning can help resolve issue. Upon such instruction the following are the recommended steps to be followed systematically and carefully.

1. Attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding strap to your bare wrist, and connect the strap to one of the ESD points on the chassis.

2. Wear Powderless Nitrite gloves to eliminate opportunity of oil residue or dry skin from transferring to optical interfaces.

3. Take the identified (by JTAC person) SIB fault/check plane offline.

4. Remove Trunk cable from LCC<n>-SIB<x>. Take dust cover from the dust-free resealable plastic bag (it is assumed that these dust covers have been safely stored in a dust-free resealable plastic bag) and put it on the cable end.

5. Insert Cleaning Adapter (part shown in slide 9) into the connector on the SIB which will open up the dust cover doors. Use compressed air (slides 3-5) and clean the 8 ferrules on the SIB connector.

6. Take out dust cover from Trunk cable end and clean the 8 ferrules on the Trunk cable end with compressed air (slides 3-5)

7. Now connect Trunk cable back into LCC<n>-SIB<x>.

8. Online the plane.

9. Check the led lights and using CLI command check if SIB check state is cleared. If cleared, you are all done.

Page 23: TX SIBs and TRUNK cable cleaning tools, accessories recommended

HIGH LEVEL CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS10. If NOT cleared, take SIB plane offline again. Remove Trunk cable from the LCC<n>-SIB<x> and now clean the 8 ferrules on the trunk cable end and SIB end using the Dry Cleaning Tool from USCONEC (slide 6 -9). Use the cleaning adapter (slide 9) on the trunk cable end and in the SIB connector whenever using this cleaning tool (slide 7). This acts as guide to the cleaning tool and is ESSENTIAL for successful use of the cleaning tool in cleaning the ferrules. Refer to the cleaning adapter user guide on how this adapter is used.

11. Connect back the Trunk cable back into LCC<n>-SIB<x>. Online the plane, check led lights and use CLI command to see if SIB check state is cleared. If cleared, you are all done.

12. If NOT cleared, take SIB plane offline. Remove Trunk cable from the LCC<n>-SIB<x> and now clean the 8 ferrules on trunk cable end and SIB end using the 99.9% Ultra Pure Anhydrous Alcohol (slide 11) with lint-free swabs (slide 12) . This must be followed by using the cleaning tool (slide 7) to remove the wetness.

13. Connect back the Trunk cable back into LCC<n>-SIB<x>. Online the plane, check led lights and use CLI command to see if SIB check state is cleared. If cleared, you are all done.

The idea behind the above recommended three step cleaning procedure is to simply start from the simplest (compressed air) and incrementally go to more aggressive methods ONLY if needed.

14. If NOT cleared, repeat same cleaning procedure on the “Trunk cable + SCC-SIB<x> end”. Again start with least aggressive which is using compressed air and if it does not resolve -> then use Dry Cloth Cleaning Tool with Cleaning Adapter and if not resolved -> then use the 99.9% Ultra Pure Anhydrous Alcohol with lint-free swaps + drycloth cleaning tool to remove any wetness.

15. At each stage after online of the plane, collect the requested output by JTAC and document the information collected nicely into a file i.e. have titles saying this is info after cleaning Trunk cable end and LCC SIB OR this is info after cleaning Trunk end and SCC SIB connector etc.

Note - If you are willing to equip each of your HWOPS tasked with this with a Westover P5000 Portable Fiber Scope (for inspection) and associated software then this can be used to check the Trunk cable after cleaning and before inserting into SIB end. Details on the Westover P5000 Portable Fiber Scope and associated software can be provided upon request.
