Move skollies, move ...” Kol. Brackenfell-stasie is vieslik – enigiets is daar moontlik.” DESIRE RORKE

    @dezzierorke

    T

    he Brackenfell community is going

high-tech to fight crime in the CBD.

    Four high-technology roaming, tilt-

    ing and zooming surveillance cameraswere

recently installed by the Brackenfell Busi-

ness Improvement Distict (BBID), to guard

over the Brackenfell CBD and train station.

All four cameras are mounted in strate-

gic places to give us a birds eye view of the

entire area, says Phillip van Zijl, director

of Bolt Risk Management, the security ser-

    vice provider to the BBID.

According to Van Zijl the cameras can

turn 380 degrees, tilt up and down and zoom

in 30 times, which makes it possible to read

the writing on the notepad in the journal-

ists handwhile interviewing himon a busy

    intersection on Old Paarl Road.

Visual material is monitored and re-

corded in an around the clock manned con-

trol room and images can be taken at ran-

dom times and examined later, he says.

Four cameras were installed in the past

few months with another seven to follow in

the new year, says Van Zijl.

According to him this type of technology

    is increasinglybeingutilised in the security

    industry.

It is becoming very popular and the

BBID is proud to say that we are ahead of

the VRCID (Voortrekker Corridor City Im-

    provement District) in this regard.

This half a million rand investment, says

Van Zijl, is of major benefit to the BBIDs

    security initiative.

At all times we are aware of what is hap-

pening at hot spots like for instance the sta-

tion bridge and can radio our patrols or po-

lice when suspicious conduct is noted.

These cameras are equal to between 10 and

12 foot patrols in the area and will compli-

ment our existing foot and vehicle patrols.

ue to repeated vandalism, the City of

Cape Town last week resorted to

switching off a sprinkler system that

services a public area at the entrance to

    Brackenfell on Frans Conradie Road.

This follows after a compliant via theme-

dia from a concernedmember of the public.

According to this reader, whose identity

    is protected, this irrigation systemadjacent

to the R300 bridge has been spewing out wa-

ter for the last three months.

There are two sprinkler heads and two

heads with extension pipes missing from

the irrigation system, which I have report-

ed several times to the Kraaifonteinmunic-

ipality, but to no avail. The water spurting

out of the irrigation has been going on now

for close onto three months, and it is thou-

sands of litres every morning, the reader

wrote in a letter of complaint.

Withwater restrictions in place, what is

this? A household is fined for excessive us-

age but the council gets away with it?

Belinda Walker, Mayco member for com-

munity services, replied to amedia enquiry

    lastweek saying thatwith thewater restric-

tions in mind, it has been decided to com-

    pletely switch off the system.

Since we are unable to control this type

of vandalismon exposed public land,we are

    left with no alternative measures.

This is rather disappointing, as Frans

Conradie Drive is one of our most promi-

nent entrances into Brackenfell, she said.

According to Walker the system was

    switchedon inSeptember this year, andhas

since been repaired four times due to acts

    of repeated vandalism.

She appeals to residents to assist the City

by reporting any suspicious activity to law

enforcement on 021 596 1999 or to the police.

    Sprinklers shut down

    DESIRE RORKE

    @dezzierorke

A series of house break-ins in Protea

Heights over the last two weeks have alert-

ed residents to jack up security for the up-

    coming festive season.

The latest of these took place in Joubert

Street in De Oude Spruit on Tuesday ac-

cording to TygerBurger sources, but the

Brackenfell police could not confirm this.

The following day (10 December) another

incident took place in Blombos Street dur-

    ing the evening.

The front doorwas forced open. A televi-

sion and laptop were stolen, but no descrip-

tion of a possible vehicle involved was re-

ceived, a spokesperson of the Brackenfell

    police station confirmed.

    On 8 December a so-called crowbar gang

broke into a house in Kamdeboo Street.

According to a TygerBurger source the

gang consisted of several men who entered

the house while the residents were home.

No injuries occurred and the gang fled in

    a BMW.

A television and jewellery were stolen,

    police said.

    On5Decemberaburglaryoccurred in the

Vermont security complex while the own-

    ers were asleep.

In the previous week three housebreak-

    ings occurred.

Police urge residents to be extra vigilant

over the festive season by joining the local

    neighbourhood watch.

    kaans dans!

    Die Stigting vir Bemagtiging deur

Afrikaans (SBA) het verlede week aange-

kondig dat die eerste danshandboeke vir

grade 10, 11 en 12 in Afrikaans verskyn het

in afsonderlike uitgawes as leerdersboek en

    onderwysgids. In die noordelike voorstede

word dans as n vak aangebied by die hor-

    skole Brackenfell, Monumentpark in Kraai-

    bridge University Press.

    Vantevore was hierdie handboeke slegs

    inEngels beskikbaar enAfrikaanse leerders

    wat die vakneem,kondusnie inhulmoeder-

taal studeer nie, s dr. Niel le Roux.

Volgens hom is die behoefte gedentifiseer

n verskeie klagtes ontvang is van Wes-

    Kaapse dansonderwysers. Hierdie verta-

dans as n kunstegenre ondersteun. Hoewel

ders gaan beteken, s Le Roux.

A successful gala evening held recently will

see to it that hundreds of needy children in

    Kraaifontein receive the stationery they

need to kick off their new school year in

    2016.

It was the first time the Be The Difference

(BTD) foundation hosted such an event.

With our back to school campaign we

raise funds to buy stationery for children

from Petunia Primary in Scottsville. This

year we managed to assist 300 needy chil-

dren and hope to double that number in

    2016, says founder Granthem Abrahams.

The event was attended by over 100

    guests, among them professional rugby

    playersCecil Afrika andCalebNgcobo from

the Blitzbokke as well as Seabelo Senatla

and Cornal Hendriks from the Stormers.

    The players donated signed memorabilia

that were auctioned off to raise funds.

    Oneof theboys fromBonnytownJuvenile

Centre where BTD has been running a de-

    velopment programme, also attended.

The night was an immense success and

we achieved the purpose of raising the

    much-needed funds, forming new relation-

ships and propelling others to also be the

    difference, says founder Granthem Abra-

    hams.

ie beste Klassieke Kersfees ng. Dit

was die algemene gevoel n Sondag-

aand se produksie, die vyfde een wat

in die Liqui-Fruit-amfiteater in die Paarl

    aangebied is.

Die meer as 3 000 mense het geesdriftig

saamgesing, maar by tye kon n mens n

Kevin Leo, Jannie Moolman, Corlea Botha

telkemaal luid toegejuig is nie.

Paul Loeb van Zuilenberg as dirigent was

    uitmuntend. Die musikale regisseur van

die produksie, Melissa van der Spuy, ver-

    dien ook lof.

Die aand is moontlik gemaak deur Tyger-

    vallei-sentrum, TygerBurger, Tygerberg

    kus as moontlikhede.g , p j g

Phantom of the Operaliedjie Music of the Night die gehoor in vervoering gehad.

    L

inette Damans of Ouma soos haar

kroos van n stuk of 30 haar noem, is

    n moderne superheldin.

haar kinders by Blasters in Brackenfell

    bederf virKersfees, waarTygerBurgerhaar

    ontmoet het vir n onderhoud.

Die behoefte is baie groot. Meer en meer

kinders word uit hul verslaafde ouers se

sorg verwyder en daar is doodeenvoudig

net nie meer genoeg pleegsorgouers om die

kinders in te neem nie, s sy.

As n plek van veiligheid kanBright Stars

maande versorg, totdat n pleegouer beskik-

baar raak.

Damans se jongste inwonertjie is nege

maande oud en die oudste 16 jaar.

Daar is tans veelmeer kinders aswatwet-

    Daar is geenanderheenkomevirdiekin-

ders nie. Waarheen moet hulle gaan? Hulle

kom uit nagmerriehuise en het liefdevolle

versorging broodnodig.

Een so n kind het vir 12 jaar by haar ge-

    Enige goeie tweedehandse kinderklere

    is altyd welkom, asook voedseldonasies.

Damans s die geheim is baie liefde, ge-

    duld, maar ook dissipline.

Ek is baie strengmetmy kinders, dis no-

dig.

    bel by 074 943 4269 of 021 988 3279.

    he solicitation of so-called

    Christmas boxes by refuse

    collection staff is prohibited,

says the City of Cape Town, re-

    minding residents that theyareun-

der no obligation to give a bonus to

    refuse collection staff.

    If, however, residents believe

that excellent service has been pro-

vided, they are of course at liberty

to give a voluntary donation to

staff as a gesture of thanks and

    goodwill, but underno circumstan-

ces should they be approached and

asked for money. City staff are ap-

    propriately remunerated, said the

    Citys Mayco member for utility

    services, Ernest Sonnenberg.

In addition, the City wishes to

    advise residents that refuse collec-

    tion services will remain un-

    changed during the festive season.

Refuse will be collected on the

    scheduled refuse collection days,

    including the public holiday on

    Wednesday 16 December, Christ-

mas Day and New Years Day on

    Friday 1 January.

    Residents are requested to en-

sure that their bins are placed out-

side for collection by 06:00 on the

    scheduled refuse collection day as

    collection teams might arrive

much earlier than usual due to re-

    duced traffic congestion.

For any other solid waste related

    service queries, residents can con-

tact the Citys call centre on

    0860 103 089.

    Inge Kritzinger from Bracken-

    fell has been teaching primary

    school learners since 1973 and

after 43 years of dedicating her

    life to educating young chil-

    dren, she has reached retire-

    ment.

Inge visited the Carel du Toit

Centre in Parow in 1989 and her

    immediate reaction was that

shewanted to be a part of the or-

    ganisation.

She was blown away by the

    philosophy that with early de-

    tection and intervention, hear-

    ing impaired children can learn

to speak and integrate into the

    hearing world.

She spent some money on at-

    taining an additional certificate

from Unisa to teach deaf chil-

dren and followed her heart to

the centre she fell in love with.

    While her colleagues have

wishes of rest for her retire-

ment years, Inge wants to keep

    busy. She recently received a

    tourist guide certificate and

will blend her love for people

with her wise owl insights to

    show tourists Cape Town

    through her eyes.

he implementation of level 2 water re-

strictions was approved at the City of

Cape Towns final council meeting of

the year. The committee approved the step-

up to level 2 water restrictions after an

amendment wasmade to cases pertaining to

    alternative water source users.

The amendment states that when water-

ing gardens, parks and open spaces with al-

    ternative water sources (rainwater harvest-

    ing, greywater reuse, treated effluentwater,

well points and bore-holes) residents are en-

couraged to do so only before 09:00 or after

18:00 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Satur-

days, and to display the appropriate signage

which must be clearly visible from a public

    thoroughfare. Usersmust be registeredwith

the City in order to do so.

Thiswas in response to customerswho ex-

    pressed dissatisfaction with the stringent

measures being applied to those who have

already taken steps to use alternative water

sources in the interests of reducing their

    consumption.

    AsCapeTown is situated in awater-scarce

region, the City imposes level 1 restrictions

(10% water savings) at all times. Because

dam levels are lower than the norm for this

time of year, it was proposed that the City

implement level 2 restrictions (20% savings)

to preserve the long-term sustainability of

    the resource.

Customers should note that from 1 Janu-

ary 2016 they will be charged according to

a tariff designed to be revenue neutral when

applied to the 10%reduced consumption lev-

els. In other words, if the customer reduces

their consumption by 10%, their bill should

remain at a similar rand value. Indigent cus-

tomers free allocation will not be affected,

norwill the free first 6 kl amonth for all resi-

dents. For example, if a resident normally

uses 24 kl of water every month at a cost of

R294.62, and they reduce consumption by

10%, they will continue to receive a bill for

a similar amount. However, if implementa-

tion of the level 2 tariff is passed by Council,

24 kl will cost them R344,75, says Ernest

Sonnenberg, Mayco member for utility ser-

    vices.

Furthermore, if passed by Council, resi-

dents will have to abide by the following,

more stringent regulations: No watering of

a garden, sports field, or other grassed area

    using potable water between 09:00 and 18:00;

no watering within 24 hours of rainfall that

    provides adequate saturation (customers

with bore-holes or other alternative sources

are not exempt), irrigation is only to take

place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Satur-

days during approved hours, and for no

longer than one hour in total. If alternative

    water sources are utilised, customers

should ensure that they display signage to

this effect clearly visible from a public thor-

oughfare. Where a hosepipe is used for irri-

gation, it must have a controlling device at-

tached at the end. No washing or hosing

down of hard-surfaced or paved areas with

    potable (drinkingwater from tap)water, and

.Ornamental water features may only be

operated if the water is recycled.

Ons land is in die mees

    knellende droogte in baie jare

en dele van ons provinsie word

    ook ernstig daardeur geraak.

    Die droogte het n negatiewe

    effek op die totale ekonomie,

    wat afgewentel word na die

    verbruiker wat alreeds ernstig

    gebuk gaan onder finansile

    Nou het die departement van

    water en sanitasie n nuwe

    struktuur vir watertariewe,

wat ten doel het om water aan

    almal te voorsien wat duurder

    en van swakker gehalte is.

    Verder is die waterinfrastruk-

    LEWENSKIEKIE

    Neem kennis

    vanmag van

    sosialemedia

Die mag van sosiale media kan deesdae

    nie meer onderskat word nie.

n Goeie voorbeeld hiervan was die

debakel rondom die minister van finan-

sies van die afgelope klompie dae. Nog

selde voorheen selfs nog meer as tydens

    die Oscar Pistorius-hofsaak het die

twiete in Suid-Afrika s gefluit en die

    Facebook-boodskappe s gevlieg oor net

    n onderwerp.

Binne n japtrap was daar talle #Zuma-

    MustFall-veldtogte op sosiale mediaplat-

forms van stapel gestuur wat deur

    derduisende ondertekenaars gesteun is.

En hoewel die president uiteindelik tot

ander insigte gebring is deur onder meer

    n paar nugtere ANC-kamerade en

    bekommerde sakelui om sy ondeurdagte

    Van Rooyen-aanstelling ongedaan te maak

en nadat die randwaarde soos n ton

stene na benede getuimel het moes die

heftige reaksie op sosiale media hom ook

goed skrikgemaak het. Hierdie was nie

    kenmerkende hoonlaggie tydens vraetyd

nie.

hat do you drink if you dont drink?

A tricky question and one Cape-

    tonian Janet Gourand has been

pondering about since she put downher om-

nipresent glass ofwine for goodabout ayear

    ago.

Last week she launched World Without

Wine, South Africas first sober website,

giving momentum to the soberista move-

ment that seems to be the hip new thing.

Caf Issi in Bre Street was brimming

with like-minded guests on Thursday even-

ing where delectable and healthy organic

snacks were served along with designer

    mocktails (non-alcoholic cocktails) and an

array of stylish non-alcoholic malted and

fermented drinks on show for tasting.

And by no means was this sober party

a bore. Without the mood altering affects of

alcohol, conversation flowed easily and re-

mained inspiring all through the evening

and driving home was a breeze.

We can all drink a little less

While some of the revellers were recover-

ing alcoholics, others merely adopted a

lifestyle change of drinking less alcohol.

Truth is we can all drink a little less ... a

    message that hit home.

A party without alcohol in Cape Town,

in December? A year ago I would not have

been interested at all, said Gourand.

Being a heavy drinker most of her adult

life, she came to a realisation a year ago.

Simply cutting down on my alcohol con-

sumption did not work. I first decided to not

keep alcohol at home and only drink when

I go out, but very quickly started going out

    every night.

    The penny dropped.

It was going to be all or nothing for me

and after attending a workshop I opted for

    the latter.

The year that followed was filled with re-

    flection.

For the first time inmy life I could really

think about why it was I drank so much.

What were the reasons? And then find new

    coping mechanisms, she said.

    Writingwas one suchmechanismand aft-

er the success of her blog World Without

Wine, in which she shared her story, the

idea of the sobersite was born.

Sobersites are popping up all over the

world with as much as 30 000 members in

    one such London-based site.

    We offer workshops, recovery coaching,

social events and support groups. We also

aim toput peoplewhoare trying to cut down

or quit alcohol into a safe space. If you are

looking for support and inspiration to

change your drinking habits then join our

community. Its free and you can be anony-

mous. You can post your personal story,

seek advice or simply let off steam!

She will also be planning several events

with an alcohol-free pop-up bar named Re-

    demption to take centre stage.

In a 2016 project, dubbed Dry January

Challenge, World Without Wine will part-

    nerwithNPOEarthchild that teaches town-

    ship kids yoga and meditation.

The organisationworks on the premise of

words spoken by the Dalai Lama: If every

eight year old in the world is taughtmedita-

tion, we will eliminate violence from the

    world within one generation.

With this challenge we want to try and

get as many people possible to sign up and

commit to being dry during January, ei-

ther the whole month or certain days. After

signing up, participants will receive daily

emailswith useful tips encouraging them to

    keep it up, says Gourand.

    Dry January savings challenge

At the end of January, participants will

be given the opportunity to reflect on the

month past, especially in terms of how

much money they had saved by not spend-

ing it on alcohol during the month. The

idea is then to make this sum and donate

    the amount to Earthchild.

    Boudoir photographer and recovering al-

coholic Fiona McCosh also launced her

brand new Sober & Sexy album for 2016.

Boudoir photos are usually taken wear-

ing either just a little or nothing at all.

Its basically my Calendar Girl version

of models in recovery. When you look at

these models you would never say that they

    were ever addicts, she said.

A former lover of red wine, McCosh says

she is still mourning her old life but not

craving it any more. I cant believe I ha-

vent had a glass of red wine in four years,

and shiver to even think about it again, she

said evoking the old adage: Oneglass is one

too many, and a thousand is not enough.

Proceeds from the calendarswill go to the

    Cape Town Addiction Counselling centre.
