Kleinvlei police took thebull by the horns whenthey came to ForestHeights High School for arandom search operation
on Thursday.
The main objective of the oper-ation was to search for drugs and dan-gerous weapons.
Ivan Kroneberg, principal of ForestHeights High School set four class-rooms aside for the police team tosearch.
“No children would be arrested un-less a child was caught with a firearm. This operation was also to see that nodrugs were being smuggled on theschool grounds. We are not going to tol-erate any illegal activities at schools,”said Sgt Carmen Marinus, head of so-cial crimes.
This is the first search the policehave done this year since Novemberlast year. It also forms part of Kleinvleipolice’s youthmonthoperation. ForestHeights High School is the first of a fewhigh schools to be searched.
Kleinvlei police were not alone asthey were accompanied by their volun-teers at the victim support unit andmore importantly by the dog unit.
The operation began at 11:30 withthe police splitting into two teams.Classes were then searched and boysand girls were divided. Female officersfrisked the girls while male officersfrisked the boys. Learners were givena thorough inspection as their pocketshad to be emptied and they were askedto take off their shoes. After learnerswere searched the dog unit moved into search each classroom for drugs.
What police found more than any-thing was the high number of cell-
phones found on learners.“These searches keep learners alert
that they can’t bring things such asweapons or drugs onto the school prop-erty. We found that cellphones are stilla big problem. In one class alone 15cellphones were confiscated. Childrenuse their phones for MXit, Facebookand to listen to music. This causes alearner to get distracted even thoughcellphones can be a useful tool. Search-es like these are necessary and I wantto have them on a regular basis,” saidKroneberg.
Even though the fine for carrying acellphone at school is still R50 the gov-erning body is discussing increasing itto R200. Kroneberg said that in themeantime if learners are caught for asecond time with cellphones, theywould have to pay double.
Police confiscated 28 cellphones, sixscissors, one knife, one screwdriverand six lighters on the day.

Leonard Bailey (22) from Kleinvlei wasgiven a hero’s welcome on Tuesday nightby family and friends after achieving aworld record in shot-put in Portugal.
Neighbours contributed snacks and cametogether to give Leonard a surprise welcomeback party. Family members also pitched upfrom as far as Stellenbosch. Shouts of“Leeennny!” ushered the young athlete inhis green and gold tracksuit home.
Leonard, who is part of the Sports Unionfor Athletics with Down Syndrome was cho-sen among eight South Africans to representthe country abroad. Among the 12 countriesthat participated were Venezuela, Mexico,Italy and Portugal. Leonard took part in thefield events such as shot-put, javelin and dis-cus.
“The competition was quite good and thepeople were friendly. I made a lot of newfriends. I am so happy for getting gold inshot-put. Jesus carried me through, He isgood to us,” Leonard said.
He has a family member working at Mali-bu High School who helps him use theschool’s athletic equipment. His aunt saysthat he walks from Kleinvlei to Malibu to usethe school’s equipment to practise. All these“hurdles” have not set him back this yearfrom bringing home a gold medal in shot-putand a bronze in discus. His family membersagree that even though he was born withDown Syndrome, he has not allowed circum-stances to get in his way.
Not only does he not have his own equip-ment to practise with but he has no formalcoach as well. This has led to his mother be-ing his coach since the age of 12.
“I am glad for him, I coach him and he doesthe work. He’s an inspiration for youngkids,” said Angel Bailey, Leonard’s mother.
Desonia Hartogh, head coach of the team
and mentor, said Leonard had been practis-ing from the beginning of the year.
“Leonard has passion and determina-tion,” Desonia said.
The Down Syndrome athletics event hap-
pens once every two years and the next com-petition will take place in South Africa.
If anybody would like to sponsor Leonardin any way you can contact his mother on074 570 2370 or 021 904 2265.

Dit is slegs moontlik in ’n veiligeen skoon omgewing, sê hy.
JANA BEKKER
’n Paar

CHILTON MELLEM
For more than a year, children and theelderly have enjoyed the warmth of a cupof soup made with love by a group ofwomen from Eerste River.
Caroline van Rooyen, Rachel “Poppy” Ad-ams and Kathleen “Kaitty” Booise have runCaroline and Poppy’s soup kitchen for morethan a year. With the need to serve the com-munity being evident, they are planning onregistering their soup kitchen.
According to Rachel and Caroline, theyserve up to 30 children between four and 12years of age every Monday and Thursday.
When school is out, children seem to knowwhere to go to get a warm cup of soup. Eventhough a warm meal seems to be the focalpoint of this soup kitchen, the care for chil-dren goes beyond that.
Children also stay at the soup kitchen forthe whole afternoon until their parentscome home from work.
Because so many children linger aroundafter being fed, these women have decidedto start a day care to educate some of theyounger children.
Besides caring for school children they de-vote their time to the sick and elderly everyWednesday as well. “We pamper them, wewash them, pray for them, massage theirfeet, cut their nails, brush their hair andmassage their backs,” said Caroline.
During the holidays a holiday programmegets held every day where children are fedand entertained. For some children the mealthey receive at the soup kitchen is the onlymeal they get for the day.
“We do it all for the kids and the elderly,”Caroline said.
All expenses are paid for by Caroline,Kathleen and Rachel. The source of theirfunds come from their grants and pension.
If anybody would like to make a donationof any kind you can contact Caroline vanRooyen on 083 363 8825 or 021 904 9812 orRachel Adams on 021 904 9243.

Robin Carlisle, the Minister for Trans-port and Public Works in the WesternCape, has released the road fatality sta-tistics for this year up until the end ofApril.
“Although the total number of deaths onour roads over April 2012 was 107, five deathsmore than the previous year’s 102, this timearound the month contained two long week-ends, instead of the usual one,” Carlisle said.
“While slightly more drivers, motorcy-clists, passengers and pedestrians werekilled this year, forensic pathology statisticsshow that this year, for the first time since2008, not a single cyclist died.
“The 104 deaths on our roads in Januaryshowed a slight drop on last year’s 109, al-though February (99) and March (92) thisyear recorded almost unheard of numbers –below the 100 mark.
“Last year’s February death toll was 129,while 147 lives were lost in March last year,’said Carlisle.
“What these numbers tell us is that whilefatalities are dropping overall, holiday peri-ods remain the most dangerous times of the
year to be on the roads.”Carlisle called the overall 2012 tally of 402
for the four months January to April “a mas-sive improvement on last year’s 487, 2010’s502, 2009’s 537 and 2008’s 562”.
On 6 October last year Carlisle announcedthat behavioural changes brought about bythe Safely Home Campaign had resulted inthe saving of the lives of 773 men, women andchildren.
Carlisle said he anticipates that the West-ern Cape will be passing the “1 000 livessaved mark” in the next few weeks.
“I would like to acknowledge the increas-ing number of motorists who are driving re-sponsibly and doing their bit to get everyonesafely home,” he said.
“However, I believe the numbers of peopledying on our roads is still far too high andI believe the time has come to start publiclyexposing these dangerous drivers,” Carlislesaid.
“They might not think that they are beingwatched, but members of the public are res-ponding to our call to come forward with theidentities of drivers that they see endange-ring the lives of the innocents on our roads.”

Cultural creativity runs strongly in theveins of a young Ravensmead theatre ac-tivist.
Lendy Swartbooi is the daughter of re-nowned poet and playwright, the late Leon-ard Koza, and it seems that that legacy in thearts is continuing as she is making her markon the local theatrical scene.
Influenced by her father she started writ-ing plays and poetry while she was atRavensmead High School between 1998 and2002.
This year aspart ofTheUbuntuCommuni-ty Theatre organisation which she co-found-ed with Dominika Jablonska she auditionedone of her plays for the Zabalaza Theatre fes-tival that took place at the Baxter in March.
“My play, Mommy, I’m in Heaven, whichI also directed, was performed at the festivaland the script was nominated for one of thebest written scripts on the fringe produc-tions,” she said proudly.
“The other notableachievement was thatone of my drama learn-ers, Lucricia Valentine, won an award for thebest newcomer at the fes-tival.”
Swartbooi graduatedfromNewAfricaTheatreAssociation in 2004where she was lecturedby Abduragman Adams(currently teaching dra-ma at the University ofStellenbosch).
During this time Ad-ams encouraged her topursue acting furtherand helped her to enrolat the University of CapeTown in 2005.
Here she was further nurtured by anotherlegend of SA theatre Thoko Ntshiki andgraduated in Performing Arts in 2008.
“After graduating I worked for the Univer-sity of Cape Town teaching community thea-tre in various schools,” she continues.
“Here I encountered the likes of seasonedprofessionals like Ivan Abrahams, AndreSamuels and Basil Appolis just to name few,on a Theatre in Education road show whichgave me more experience in the arts.
Not restingonher laurels shehasbeengiv-ing free drama and dance classes at Ravens-mead Library and assisting a few primaryschool learners with a reading programme.
Isabel Young the Children Librarian wasthe one who encouraged her to start this pro-gramme. “The library is helping me withbooks for this project,” says Swartbooi.
“I want to urge parents to help and encour-age their children to read and join this kindof programmes so that their children willflourish both academically and in the extra-mural activities.”

An organisation in the community wants toempower young girls to take control of theirlives.
The Black Canvas Youth Development Organi-sation is inviting community youth organisa-tions, schools, churches and other interested par-ties to call on them to host a special workshopfor young women.
Melanie Rutgers is the director of the pro-gramme and she wants more girls to take partin the TLC 4 Me workshops which are informa-tive, fun and innovative to empower them andbreak negative cycles in the community.
She explained that the idea for the project de-rived from a conversation that she was havingwith her daughter about the challenges younggirls are faced with in society.
“A few years ago, my son and daughter repre-sented the Nelson Mandela Foundation JuniorGovernment,” she says.
“My daughter was deputy speaker and my sonwas the first speaker for the opposition. Duringthis time they participated and debated many is-sues that affect our youth.
“When the process was over they wanted tohelp make a difference and that is how the con-versation to help girlsstarted.”
Rutgers has 26 years’ ex-perience of working withproblems related to womenin various areas, and howit affects girls in all com-munities.
“However, I do believethat with early interven-tion we can assist and em-power our youth to makebetter choices and breakcycles that may affect theircontribution to the world.
“The research and needsanalysis was done over a
period of years working with young women inskill development projects I developed for an or-ganisation that I worked with before and stillhave a good relationship with them.
“We worked with young women at risk fromcommunities all over the Cape Metro and duringtheseyears I found that theseyoungwomenneed-ed more than hard skills alone. They needed toheal and develop skills that aid them to move tothe next level whilst becoming strong womenwhich helps them break negative circumstancesthat have beset their generation since child-hood.”
She added that at Black Canvas their hope wasto change and shift the mindsets of young womenregardless of their current situations.
“They need to know that they still have the di-vine power to change who they are in the situa-tions they are faced with.
“The workshops we hold deal with activitiesranging from feminine hygiene, skincare andhair care to dealing with abuse in teenage rela-tionships and everything in between includingnutrition and eating disorders.
“Our workshops are fun, innovative and in-formative. We work with an amazing team of pro-fessionals and are always willing to assist.”
Rutgers can be contacted on 079 513 4498 or 021902 0867.

The joy of jazz is taking a youngmusician to making musicalmagic across the world.
When 22-year-old guitaristMark Williams steps onto the Art-scape stage as part of the annualYouth Jazz Festival on Saturday,it’s all part of a journey that start-ed in Mitchells Plain, and contin-ues to prestigious festivals in thiscountry and across the world.
This journey has also empow-ered this young man to rise aboverampant temptations of crime andgangsterism in communities, andhe is now an inspiration to otheryoungsters in the community.
While he confesses that he couldplay the basics since he was nine, the jazz bug started biting when heheard about some of the risingyoung players on the scene.
“There were young cats likeJonathan Rubain, Julius May andothers who were not much olderthan me, but they could play someincredible music.
“Through them I started to lis-ten to the older generation of play-
ers like Jimmy Dludlu and AlvinDyers, and the international leg-ends like Pat Metheny, GeorgeBenson, getting into the music ofMiles Davis and John Coltraneand knew that this is what I want-ed from music in my life,” he said.
It was only after leaving highschool that hereally got intothe seriousside of thingswhen hejoined theCape MusicInstitute runby CamilloLombard andEzra Delportin 2007.
“This wasan excitingtime for me asI completed atwo-yearcourse withtraining inmusic theory, songwriting, music busi-ness, stageperformance,
band ethics, life skills, industrialcommunication, arranging, com-posing and music production.
“It was also here that I realisedthat hard work has its rewardswhen Iwas chosen to represent theCapeMusic Institute at theNorwe-gian Music Academy in Oslo in
2009. Here I attended some musictheory clinics and jazz workshopsand thus far it is the only formaltraining I’ve received and I’m stillstriving to learn all there is tolearn about life and music,” hesaid.
Williams pointed out that Lom-bard and Del-port still play amajor role inhis life.
“These twowonderfulmentors havebeen extreme-ly influentialin many of myachievementsand even mymost recentsuccess suchas beingawarded an on-line scholar-ship to studythroughBerklee Col-lege of Music.
“I am verypassionateabout what I do
and I enjoy going the extra mileand giving my all in whatever it isI need to do to elevate myself. OnSaturday it will be the second timethat I am featured on this festivaland I am looking forward to per-forming with the wonderful DelftBig Band again.
“You just have to look at thisband to see how the music can em-power youth from disadvantagedcommunities. We need moreprojects like this out there to fightthe temptations of crime and gang-sterism in our communities.”
Highlights in this musician’s ca-reer so far include opening forJonathan Butler on his recent SAtour, various appearances at theCape Town International Jazz Fes-tival, playing at the Montreal Jazzfestival last year, and an extensivetour of Europe last year that in-cluded gigs in Switzerland, Portu-gal, Germany, the Netherlands,Belgium and London.
The Artscape Youth Jazz Festi-val takes place at the ArtscapeTheatre on Saturday starting at19:30.

It was a marriage of fitness andhistory when close to 4 000 run-ners laced up for the Jive SlaveRoute Challenge on Sunday.
Hosted in the city centre for thesecond time, the race saw partici-pants make their way past some ofCape Town’s most significant his-toric sites, many of which arelinked to the slave trade.
The host club’s Lion of AfricaItheko Sporting Athletic Club andrace founder, Farouk Meyer, couldnot have been more pleased withthe success of the event.
“It was way above our expecta-tions,” says Meyer, who adds that“everything went off just great.Even the weather played along”.
He is already eyeing the racegrowth potential.
“I think this race can grow intoone of the biggest in Cape Town.”
Sister community newspaperPeople’s Post is the print mediasponsor of the race.
The race has four routes. Of the3 900 people who took up the Chal-lenge, 1 400 ran the 10km, 1 200 tookpart in the 21,1km half marathon,700 did the 5km walk and 600 tookpart in the 10km walk.
Meyer says he was “pleasantlysurprised”by thenumberof foreign
participants. “They just couldn’tstop talking about it.”
Since race day he has receivedseveral positive emails.
For the first time the race ledcompetitors straight through theCastle, arguably one of the most fa-mous historical landmarks in thecity.
Another unique aspect to theevent was that a canon doubled asthe starting gun.
Asiphe Skabalanjane broke thetape in the 10km women’s race, while Bulelwa Mtshaei came sec-ond, followed by Ursula Frans.
Their respective male counter-parts were Mathadazo Qhina, Si-nethemba Mdzanga and Peter Tsa-wayo. In the half-marathon, Antho-ny Godongwana was the first tocross the finish line, whileLindikaya Mthangayi took silver.
Sityhilo Diko claimed the last po-dium position. The top three in thewomen’s half marathon were Nom-vuyisi Seti, Bulelwa Simae and Di-anne McEwan.
The first, second and third placedrunners in the half marathon wonR1 000, R750 and R500 respectively, while the top three in the 10km racewon R500, R300 and R200.
All of the competitors who fin-ished the race received medals.

People’s Post editor Feroza MillerIsaacs and advertising manager Edwin Scott both completed the race and wenthome with medals.
The half marathon runners were the first to set off at 07:00. The start of the race was signalledby the firing of a canon at the Castle. Photos: Liam Moses

Belhar wen amperondanks 14 manne
SAREL BURGER
’n Eerste oorwinning ontwyk Tygerbergsteeds hierdie seisoen.
