Crime fighting in the communityis getting a boost with trainingfor Neighbourhood Watches.

The Department of CommunitySafety is serious about safety andfighting crimebyhosting this train-

ing initiative in various communi-ties to facilitate these organisationsoperating successfully.A group of volunteers from Bish-

op Lavis, Bonteheuwel and MalawiCamp recently completed one ofthese courses at the Bishop LavisSAPS Training College and judgingby their reactions this training has

inspired them to encourage moreresidents to play their part in keep-ing communities safe.Facilitator of the course,Malvern

de Bruyn, said that he was veryproud of the volunteers and theirdedication to fulfill their role inkeeping their communities safe.“This course is very important

for them to fully understand whattheir role is when fighting crime,”he says.“With this training it brings a lot

of value to their community withtheir new skills.“It teaches them how to respond

to crime when it happens and howto work with the different struc-

tures within their communitiesranging from the police, police fo-rums and reservists.“In many cases they are also the

first people to arrive on a crimescene so they are also taught howto manage that scene to keep it safefor police to do their investigations.

training that they receivedandexcitedaboutgoing into their communities with their newknowledge.Nazma Swarts was one of those who was

outspoken about making this knowledgework for safety in the community.“Many of us live in communities where

crimehas takenover the streets, but the timehas come for people to realise that ifwe standtogether we can really make a difference,”she said.“With the skills that we have learned here

we must go out there and encourage ourneighbours about how they can play theirpart in community safety.”Another trainee, Caroline Armentville

pointed out that she never realised the im-portant role that neighbourhood watchescan play in communities.

Crystal October also enjoyed the trainingexperienceandsaid that peoplemust face therealities of what is happening around themand do something about it.“We want to have communities where it is

safe to walk the streets again,” she said.“Wewant neighbourhoods where our chil-

dren are safe, where they can play in parksand enjoy themselves without fear, but thetime has come for everybody to be part ofmaking their areas safe.“We must stop ignoring the signs that we

see when people we know are committingcrime; if we keep quiet we are encouragingcrime.”Cluster co-ordinator Mike Hoffmeester

was also very happy that these trainees areinspired in their fight for safety in communi-ties.“I know that the trainees will go into the

Police are taking action against the ille-gal scrap metal menace in communities.

On Thursday 15 September at about 06:00,an integrated operation was conducted atfour unlicensed scrap metal dealers in Bon-teheuwel and Bishop Lavis.Various law enforcement branches were

included as well as representatives fromSARS and Telkom.During this operation more than R5 000

worth of steel cable was confiscated as wellas steel and steel gates of an unknown value.Communications officer at Bishop Lavis

SAPS, CaptMarie Louw said that this opera-tion proved to the community that the policewere serious about fighting metal theft incommunities.

“We found brand new copper door han-dles, post boxes, water taps and lots of othermetal fittings that were stolen from homesand businesses in the area,” she said.“We also confiscated a truck that was used

to transport this metal and fines of R2 000were also issued.”While the police where busy at one of the

addresses, a resident from Heideveld passedthe police on the scene and spotted his gatethat was stolen the previous day on the con-fiscated truck. Four men were arrested onvarious charges.“This is a stern warning from the police

that we will also deal with owners of illegalsecond-hand goods shops and they will faceprosecution in terms of the existing SecondHand Goods Act,” continued Louw.

“We will continue with such operationsand intensify such operations in order tokeep our communities safe from perpetra-tors that damage properties and sell thesetaps, drain covers, water meters to second-hand dealers.“We also appeal to the communities in

helping us to combat crime by providing uswith accurate information on illegal activi-ties, and urge them to continue with thissound relationship in the fight againstcrime.”Anyone with information regarding ille-

gal second-hand dealers and who suspectsmalicious damage was done to property toobtain these goods, is kindly requested tocontact the sector managers on Crime Stopon 08600 1 0111.

The Elsies River Community Lear-ning Centre in Leonsdale is tops intaking learners to their full potenti-al.

This facility walked away withtop honours at the 2012 AnnualAdult Learners’ Week Awards Ce-remony that was held in Nelspruit,Mpumalanga at the beginning ofSeptember.

Centre manager Mike Pick saidthat this was a proud moment forthe centre and it will inspire themfor the future.

“All nine provinces took part infour different categories, and in theWestern Cape we should be very

proud because we were the onlyprovince with a winner in each ca-tegory,” he said.

“For us the cherry on top is win-ning the first prize for CentreAchievement, but we had a runner-up from Stellenbosch in the Lear-ner Achievement category, Worce-ster provided a runner-up in theEducator category, and the runner-up in the Group Achievement wasfrom Porterville.”

Pick added that the educators andstaff at the facility must be praisedfor their part in winning this a-ward.

“Everybody has played a big partin this achievement because wit-hout their dedication to the centre

and the learners itwouldnot be pos-sible.

“While we are very happy withthe award we are not resting on ourlaurels because there is still a lot ofwork to be done in the field of adulteducation.

“We want the community to seethat we are doing good work here.Young people who have not finis-hed their educationmust be here tofinish their schooling.

“Adults who did not get the op-portunities when they were youngmust also take up the challenge ofeducating themselves, and acquirenew skills,” he said.

The annual Bishop LavisHealth Festival will be hap-pening on Saturday 5 Octo-ber, but they’ve started walk-ing for a healthier lifestyle.

While this event will be hap-pening at the sports ground theDay Hospital in the area hasstarted a unique project tochange the community’s per-ceptions about staying healthy.

Priscilla Anthony, health pro-moter at the facility, gatheredsome members of the communi-ty together last week to launchthe Summer Walk for Health in-itiative.

“While this project is open toall we are concentrating onsome of our patients who sufferfrom diabetes and hyperten-sion,” she said.

“We want to change their per-ception that it is just medicationthat plays a part in their health.Exercise is a big factor that theydon’t take into account.

“With this project we actuallyshow them how exercise helpsby having staff test their bloodlevels and pressure before we goon a brisk walk, and again after-wards.

“That way they can see howmuch exercise can help them.”

This launch was also a fore-runner to the festival that will

be taking place on Saturday 5October and there will be lots offun and entertainment for eve-ryone.

There will also be the opportu-nity for medical tests to be doneon the day, and lucky prizesthroughout the day.

There is also the Big Walk andFun Run that takes place withdistances of 2km and 5 km. En-try is only R5 and there is a freewater bottle for the first 100 en-trants.

The Delft Big Band and the The CecilJacobs Outreach Project are the last twoprojects to benefit from theCapeCultureand Heritage Foundation.

Each organisation has received R250 000from the trust to keep their projects going.

The Cape Culture and Heritage Founda-tion was started 10 years ago, with the aimof supporting local arts and culture projects.

The foundation forms part of GrandWest’scorporate social investment initiatives andso far R10 million has been paid out.

Some of the other organisations who havebenefited from the Trust include the Collegeof Magic, Dance for All, the Jungle TheatreCompany, Jazzart’s “Danscape”, the La Ro-sa dance company, the Magnet Theatrephysical theatre company, the New AfricaTheatre Association, The Steelband Projectand the Zip Zap Circus School Trust.

The trust has also been involved with the-atre productions, such as when Artscape re-ceived assistance from the Foundation forstaging the Grade 12 isiXhosa setwork,Ama-za, enabling 5 585 children from 63 differentWestern Cape schools to attend a profession-al stage production of one of their curricu-lum setworks.
