Inwoners van Ruyterwacht is te bang omsommige stegies tussen huise te gebruik.

Verskeie strate in dié dorp word metstegies verbind,waardeurmense loop ombyhul bestemmings te kom. Hierdie stegies isdaar vir die gerief, maar mense vrees nouvir hul lewens wanneer hulle veral saansdaardeur moet stap.

Charmaine Norman van Hertzogstraat sêsy laat nie haar kinders ná donker deur diestegie langs haar huis loop nie.

“’n Mens weet nie wie en wat daar skuilnie,” sê ’n bekommerde Norman.

Hulle het selfs so ver gegaan omkringtele-

visie by die huis te laat aanbring, sodat hullekan monitor wat in die deurloop aangaan.

Met die kamera het hulle gesien hoe men-se gereeld rommel stort.

“Dit is ’n gemors. Ek het al ’n ou op heter-daad betrap terwyl hy besig was om tuinvul-lis uit te gooi en het hom sommer verjaag.Ons bly hier en wil nie hê dit moet lyk soos’n rommelhoop nie. Sommige dae tel ek selfdie rommel op en gooi dit weg.”

Dit is nie gesond nie en is net vieslik.”Basil Souma, ’n gemeenskapswerker van

Ruyterwacht, sê dit is amper asof die StadKaapstad vergeet het van die stegies.

“Die stegiesword net niemeer in stand ge-hou nie. Mense is deesdae te bang om deurte loop, want hulle weet nie watter elementeskuil in die lang gras nie.

“Sommige inwoners van Ruyterwacht hetal by die Stad aansoek gedoen om die stegiesaangrensend tot hul huise te huur en danverskuif hulle net hul heinings. Ek dink ditgaan die probleem oplos,” redeneer Souma.

Michael Britz, raadslid van Ruyterwacht,sê hy het al klagtes ontvang dat die stegiesnie behoorlik skoongemaak word nie en datmense al aangeval is. “Mense wat aangevalword moet dit by die polisie aanmeld. Dit isdie polisie se werk om oral, ook by die ste-

gies, te patrolleer,” sê Britz.

ProbleemAs die stegie vir inwoners van aangren-

sende huise ’n te groot probleem word, kanhulle die Stad kontak en aansoek doen omdit te huur. “Vir dié verhuring moet ’n jaar-likse fooi betaal word. Inwoners kan ook ’naansoek indien om die gange te sluit. InMit-chell’s Plain het mense suksesvol aansoekgedoen om stegies gesluit te kry.”

Aansoekvorms is beskikbaar by die Stadse kantoor in Goodwood of by die subraad-kantore in Parow. Britz maan egter dat ’nsluiting nie sommer oornag gaan plaasvindnie, aangesien daar onder meer ’n prosesvan openbare deelname moet wees.

‘House of hell’ is finally empty

The residents of Bedford street in ParowWest can sleep peacefully again afteran eight-year-long battle with neigh-

bours running a brothel from the house atnumber 46.

The house was finally evacuated on 8 Sep-tember.

A neighbour says, “More than ten menleft the house that day when the police cameto escort them out with their suitcases andblankets. They were picked up by fancycars, tied mattresses to the roofs of thesecars and left in different directions.” Shesays that living close to this house, whichhad once been a creche, has been utter hell.She says she does not know where the own-er of creche has disappeared to.

“Women were always screaming in there,you heard the fighting and drugged peoplecame staggering in and out of the propertyat all times. Crime in this street was insane-ly high, because the druggies who boughttheir stuff there, were always on the lookoutfor anything they could sell,” she says.

‘Someone was killed in this room’Johan Riekert, who lives three houses

away from the now ruined building, says:“We are incredibly thankful for the City ofCape Town and Metro Police who sortedthis out. They are gone now. It is quiet.” Headded that since the house was evacuated,residents from Hernus Kriel home for theaged in nearby Bedford Street have startedwalking down the street again.

“The elderly used to come and ask me andmy wife if it safe to pass through to Voor-trekker Road,” Riekert says.

“I am curious to see what the house lookslike on the inside, but I will not go in there,I might catch a disease,” says another wom-an who stays in the street.

“They lived like animals,” says one of thesecurity guards who has been stationed out-side the property until the house is sold.

Inside the house, floorboards have beenlifted up and removed in places, almost allthe windows are broken and the ceilings arefull of holes and stained black. The walls inone room had been splashed with red paintand the words “Someone was killed in thisroom” painted on the wall. Several profani-ties scream from the dirty walls, which arestill adorned with life-sizes cartoon charac-ters dating from the days when the houseserved as a day-care for toddlers. Flies lazilybuzz around and in one room some emptyice cream tubs bear witness of being usedas a toilet.

Shoes, underwear and discarded con-doms are strewn throughout the rooms.

While the chairperson of the subcouncil,Clive Justus, is using this property as an ex-ample of the successful curbing of urban de-cay, some residents in Parow West are con-cerned about the house’s previous tenantsgetting away with other crimes.

Suspected criminals still on the loose“Nobody is seeing the seriousness of this

situation,” says Sherm Arendse, who, witha handful of other concerned women are at

their wits’ end with “foreigners running adrug empire in Parow”.

Arendse says the people who stayed inthis house are simply going to pop up some-where else.

“Services have been cut off there a whileago, but they just went to another house inSmit street to get water,” she says.

“We are fighting a losing battle becauseof the no-care attitude of the police. Who dowe speak to, what do we do?” she asks. “Eve-rybody is just watching as Parow becomesa slum. Can Clive Justus not see that?” sheasks.

But Justus says a Parow/Goodwood Gangand Drug Task Team has been set up to dealwith the problem. The team consists of offi-cials from the National Prosecuting Author-ity (NPA), police, South African RevenueService (SARS), Home Affairs and the De-partment of Justice.

Justus called a press conference after theeviction, where he commended the problembuildings task team who tracked down the

owner of this property, Ed Nolan. They de-livered notices to him by hand and broughthim to book. Nolan is now facing chargesrelated to not adhering to the problem build-ing bylaw. The case was postponed earlierin September but will be heard in ParowMagistrate’s court on 14 October for finaljudgement.

Nolan can face a fine up to R300 000 orthree years in prison for ignoring the notic-es served to him under this bylaw.

Justus emphasises that there is no placefor xenophobia in Parow and that he doesnot have an axe to grind with anybody thatadheres to the law. He emphasized that thevictory the City has had with no. 46 Bedfordshould serve as a warning to other propertyowners renting to criminals. “Know whoyou allow into your building,” he urged.V The house at 46 Bedford was scheduled to be auc­tioned off on 16 September, but when the auction­eer did not show up, interested parties discoveredthat the auction was called off because the househad been sold beforehand.

Vennootskap“Die vennootskap waarin ek was, het ge-

vou en ek het alles verloor. Ek kon net myvrou, kinders en die kat behou,” spot hy.

Op die ouderdom van 36 was hy teen diegrond en moes hy homself herskep. ’n Ge-leentheid het byHebron se ChristelikeAka-demie in Kuilsrivier opgeduik om in wis-kunde en wetenskap klas te gee.

“Hulle het ’n Amerikaanse kurrikulumgevolg en dit het tot gevolg gehad dat leer-

ders ná skool gesukkel het om by Suid-Afri-kaanse universiteite aanvaar te word. Ekhet toe met die projek begin om die heleskool se leerplan – van graad R tot 9 – omte skakel na die Suid-Afrikaanse een.

“Dié projek het my aangemoedig om bydie Universiteit van Potchefstroom in teskryf vir ’n onderwysdiploma. Ek het maardeeltyds studeer; saans en oor naweke. Myvrou en kinders het maar die koffie aange-dra en my ondersteun,” sê Herholdt.

Die kwalifikasie wat hy verwerf het, hethom net lus gemaak om nog verder te stu-deer of, soos hy sê, homself in sy “middelja-re-krisis” te begewe. “Ander ouens op myouderdom koop Harley Davison-motorfiet-se en kry oorbelle. Hoewel ek ook ’n Harleywil hê, is my boeke my eerste prioriteit.”

Ná die onderwysdiploma het hy by dieUniversiteit Stellenbosch ingeskryf vir diegevorderde onderwyssertifikaat, toe vir syhonneursgraad in kurrikulumstudies. Hyhet alles met lof geslaag en moet teen vol-gende jaar sy meestersgraad afhandel.

Nádiemeestersgraadwil hygraag sydok-torsgraad voltooi en verduidelik sy leergie-righeid só: “Om ’n goeie onderwyser tewees, moet jy nooit ophou leer nie. Die dagwanneer ’n onderwyser ophou leer, is diedag wat daardie persoon aftree.”

KindersSy kinders deel nie noodwendig sy voor-

liefde vir wiskunde nie.“My oudste dogter, Adelè (23), het die dag

toe sy haar laaste chemie-vraestel skryf, ge-sê: “Pa, ek het dit vir jou gedoen, maar ekgaan dit nooit weer doen nie”. Daardie daghet ek besef ek kan nie my kinders dwingom lief te wees vir wiskunde nie.

Volgens Herholdt is die oplossing vir dieswak wiskunde-uitslae in die land nie sovoor die hand liggend nie.

“Dit is nie noodwendig die kurrikulumwat swak is nie,maar baie keer is dit onder-wysers wat nie reg opgelei is nie. Sommigeonnies gee tenbrodewiskunde,maarhet ditself nie in matriek geslaag nie.”

At the crack of dawn, while the morningmist still lies thick on the ground, thefirst riders arrive to groom their hors-

es. The stables come alive as riding boots arepolished, coats brushed and manes plaited.

The riders emerge in their crisp whitejodhpurs, smart red and black jackets andblack equestrian caps to saddle up. This isa pageant of custom.

Ten minutes later the hunting horn sig-nals and the huntsman bellows out: “Gatherround, gather round!” The horses whinnyas the hounds start to howl in anticipation.The hunt is about to begin.

You will be forgiven for thinking this narra-tive describes the start of fox-hunting seasonin Britain at the turn of the 19th century. Butin fact TygerBurger joined a modern ‘foxhunt’ on the plains of Joostenbergvlakte onSunday.

A large group of members of the Cape HuntClub (the oldest hunting club outside of Eng-land) turned up at Horses Equestrian Centreto revel in this age-old sport, still keenly sup-ported in Cape Town.

Drag hunting is a non-competitive, cross-country equestrian sport in which riders fol-low foxhounds trained to follow a laid trail ofscent. The exciting course usually includesnumerous jumps and some natural hazardssuch as river crossings. The trail of about 10

km is laid out in six legs for riders andhounds to take rests in between.

Colleen gives a brief explanation of howthe modern version of a hunt is practisedtoday. “In modern times foxes aren’t hunt-ed anymore and we use what is called adrag – a cloth scented with jackal urine,”she explains.“It is pulled by the dragsmanwho rides out with the drag on a rope, fourminutes before the hunt starts. The hunts-man, who is in charge of the hounds, willthen ‘lay’ the hounds on the scent with thehuntmaster leading the riders,” she says.

Before starting off, each rider quicklyswallows down the traditional stirrup cup(usually whisky or liqueur) while thedragsman goes ahead with the drag. Then,exactly four minutes later, the hounds areon their way, while excited spectators aredriven out ahead in off road vehicles to geta good vantage point. On a hillside near theend of the first leg, the vehicles come a stopand spectators wait in hushed excitementfor the hounds and the first riders to comearound the corner.

Their patience is soon rewarded when aminute later the pack of hounds chargearound the corner with 21 riders on horse-back, hot on their heels.

Holly Miller (15) from Edgemead has par-ticipated in four hunts. “It is all about vibe!The hounds, the fast ride, the clothing andthe entire tradition of the day,” she says.

The energetic hounds are bred for theirstrong hunting instincts and keen sense ofsmell. It is fascinating to watch them fol-low the scent, and if they lose it for a fewseconds it is soon picked up again.

“At the age of five months we start takingthem on puppy walks and at eight monthsthey are coupled with an older hound. Sothey essentially teach each other to hunt,”says Colleen. On the last stretch houndsand horses stop at a small farm dam for aquick dip. “It doesn’t matter how manyhunts you have done, it always remainschallenging and therein lies the adrenalin

The City of Cape Town’sWater and SanitationDepartment will be con-

ducting its annual water ser-vice quality survey for thenext three months.

The intention of the sur-vey is to indicate the level ofservice satisfaction amongits communities, as well asthe respective service disci-plines that require improve-ment. Devnomics (Develop-mentnomics Pty. Ltd) hasbeen appointed to conductthe research survey in eightdistricts across the city:South Peninsula, Tyger-berg/Bellville, Khayelitsha,Helderberg/Kuils River,Mitchells Plain, Kraaifon-tein/Blaauwberg, CentralCape Town and Klipfontein,to be concluded in Novem-ber. The survey will be con-ducted either telephonicallyor face-to-face and will inclu-de 1 000 formal settlement re-sidents, 600 informal settle-ment residents and 300 busi-nesses.

They will also assess theamount of water that is usedon these premises. “The cityfalls within a water scarceregion and this exercise will

provide us with a better un-derstanding of where we cancontinue to improve on ourservices.

Furthermore it will equipthe City with the necessaryinformation on water con-sumption patterns and beha-viour,” said Ernest Sonnen-berg, Mayco member for Uti-lity Services.

The survey forms part ofthe Water and Sanitation De-partment’s customer servicecharter, ensuring that the Ci-ty continues to provide a topquality service and productto its residents. “Furthermo-re, it may assist us in savingmore water and it puts thecustomers – our residents –at the centre of all our acti-ons,’ said Sonnenberg.

The survey staff will wearthe required identificationtag containing the City’s lo-go, a photo of the surveyor,and the project details, in or-der for them to be granted ac-cess to the premises whichform part of the surveysample.

You justmight just be listening to the lovelyNastassja Pretorius (17) playing her cello.

Nastassja is a rising star in the music in-dustry in Cape Town and the many acco-lades she has received is testimony to this.

She was awarded a cum laude at the CapeTown Eisteddfod for the best cello player inher age category. A grade 11 learner at TheSettlers High School, she also received hercolours for bass guitar playing in the jazzband, The Dynamix. The band also won thehigh school jazz band prize at the V&A Wa-terfront earlier this year under the batonof Tracey Johannes.

Nastassja started playing the cello at theage of 8 at Hugo Lambrechts Music Schoolunder the tutelage of Leonore Ehlers. Sheis currently tudying with Rina Schutte. Aslead cellist of the the Hugo LambrechtsSymphonyOrchestra and the Senior StringEnsemble, she also won the Cape Town Ei-steddfod category prize for the best stringensemble.

And if that isn’t enough, earlier this yearshepassedherUnisa grade 7pianoandcelloexaminations with distinction and wasplaced onUnisa’s Roll of Honour. InAugustshe participated in the SACSMusic compe-tition playing on the descant and alto re-corders and in the Pieter Kooij music com-petition she was one of the top 8 finalistson the cello.

Despite all these achievements she stillfinds her mojo playing in her church or-chestra aswell as theCapeTownOrchestra.She’s currently a training as an organistand also sings in the congregation’s choir.

“When I am finished with school I would

like to study music at either at UCT or Stel-lenbosch University,” says Nastassja.

Her days are so full of music that onmostevenings she arrives at home at 19:00.“When I get a chance, I read a good book.I am also very involved in cultural activi-ties at my school and at our church.”

Nastassja’s father Donovan, says musicruns in the family. “My wife is a musicteacher, my older daughter plays the violinand both my wife and I play the piano inchurch,” he says.

Although he is very proud of his daugh-ter, he says the family is humbled by herachievements. “I respect her because she isalways busy with something. They say ifyou want something done, give it to some-one who is involved in music,” says theproud father.

One often reads and hearsabout motorcyclists’ involve-ment in road accidents – moreoften than not, the cause of theaccident is placed at the feet ofthe other road user.

While sitting in peak hourtraffic on a national road lastweek, I was really annoyed atthe number of bikers zig-zag-ging their way through thegridlocked traffic.

With my senses on highalert, I noticed most motorcy-clists would either speed pastvehicles in the gap betweenlanes, or manoeuvre their waythrough the traffic to get to thefront. They also seem to forcetheir way into turning lanes atrobots or stop-streets, withlittle or no regard for othermotorists.

Understandably, their chosenmode of transport allows themto skip the traffic which we, togreat frustration have toendure. A little respect whilemeandering through vehicleswould be appreciated.

Yes, we also have a rule thatowners or tenants have toapply to keep an animal of aspecific size, but some of thetenants say they have no pets.Once they are in, a dog arrives,too. When they apply, we aretold the animal is miniature,but then a dog the size of aborder collie suddenly appears.What can you do once they arein? Absolutely nothing.

When they are confronted, weare told: “Strange, we werehome all night or weekend anddidn’t hear the dog barking.”

Obviously the animal won’tbark when you are home.Please think of the otheroccupants of the complex andrather don’t have an animal ifyou cannot be there to takethem out for a walk, give themsome love and attention andkeep them quiet.

The International Federation of Bodybuilding (IFBB) Western Province hosted the SA championships from 10­13 September at the Grand Arena at GrandWest. The contest proved to be one of thebest shows ever hosted at a world class venue. Western Province won the team trophy and secured several national champions and top­three spots. Ravin Kolbe won the juniors u­23 under 75kgdivision. Sheldon Valjalo won the men’s physique up to 170cm and Oscar Ratya won the welterweight division. Theunis Bester successfully defended the physiques up to 178cm title he bagged lastyear. Michael Adonis won the light middleweight title and Scarlet Jackson, a rookie, won the fitness bikini over 169cm division. Nicolene Booysen won the fitness bikini up to 163cm title. Nurturing talent at cricket schoolCome January next year, one of the

most famous and picturesque cricketgrounds in the world will become

home to a high school.The Western Province Cricket Associa-

tion (WPCA), in partnership with Stone-fountain Colleges, announced the openingof Newlands Cricket High School lastweek.Shaheed Shaik, the founder and director

of the new school, says the school willbroaden the platform for talented cricketplayers, so that more players of value canproceed through the local cricketing sys-tem. “There are currently four very promi-nent cricket schools in town, but disadvan-taged players cannot afford to attend theseschools,” he says.“The objective of the new school’s man-

agement team is to arrange scholarshipsfor nine players from disadvantaged back-grounds, thus ensuring that money is notthemost important criteria when deciding

which players will be accepted at the topcricket institutions.”The school will be following the provin-

cial education department’s curriculumand will be accepting Grade 8 and Grade9 pupils for next year. In this way, theschoolwill growbyagrade everyyear. “Af-ter five years, the school should have atleast 45 well-developed disadvantagedplayers vying for provincial selection onmerit, rather than opting for the very un-popular quota system,” says Shaik.

Balancing cricket and academics“The school will have a fully-fledged aca-

demic programme, but will fit the develop-ment of cricket skills into the daily pro-gramme.”According to theWPCAwebsite,the school will be housed in the CenturyClub on the third floor at the southern endof the field. It will also use the facilities ofWestern Province Cricket Club, a merestone’s throw away from the stadium. “Ap-

plicants will be assessed in terms of theircricket ability by coaches on the school’sstaff and only those players with an aboveaverage ability to play cricket will be ac-cepted. Players who show real potentialbut who have fully not developed, will alsobe considered,” reads the statement.

Passionate about the game“Teaching staff will be registered with

the South African Council of Educators,while cricket coaches will be at least LevelTwo compliant coaches. The school’s coreactivity will be cricket development andplayers will be exposed to the best possibleprogrammes, workshops and practice ses-sions.”The pupils will also will be exposed to

many forms of cricket andwill playmatch-es in theWPCA schools and clubs competi-tion. They will also tour around the coun-tryandhost touring teams fromaround theworld.

“Playerswill not lose out on schoolwork,as teachers will be touring with the play-ers, ensuring that the academic pro-gramme continues,” Shaik says.WPCA general manager Nabeal Dien

praises Shaik forhis “forward thinking” interms of cricket development and educa-tion. “He is passionate about educationand more passionate about the game ofcricket,” Dien says.“It ismy contention thatwithhis vast ex-

perience and passion for education andcricket, this initiative will provide a natu-ral fit for ensuring a successful cricketschool.“The WPCA is excited about this initia-

tive and its implementation, as we have al-ways subscribed to these values of educa-tion, access and opportunity.”

Die o.19A-netbalspan van die HoërskoolStellenberg het Saterdag in Bellville virdie vyfde agtereenvolgende jaar die sep-ter geswaai in die topafdeling van die WPse skolenetbal-kompetisie.

Die Stellies het ’n moedige De Kuilenmet 40-25 in die eindstryd geklop nadathulle vroeër in die dag in die halfeindron-de met 39-26 met D.F. Malan afgerekenhet.

De Kuilen het die eindstryd gehaaldeur HS Tygerberg in die halfeindrondemet 46-21 uit te skakel.

Met hierdie vertoning het Stellenbergandermaal die kroon gespan op ’n baiesuksesvolle jaar. Vroeër in die seisoen

het die Stellies derde geëindig in die nasi-onale topskole-kompetisie. Stellenberg seo.15A-span het sy eerste span nagedoendeur ook in hierdie afdeling die titel inte palm ná ’n oorwinning van 11-5 oor DeKuilen in die eindstryd.

De Kuilen se o.16A-span het wel hier-voor vergoed deur die o.16A-trofee te wenmet ’n sege van 14-13 oor Brackenfell, watop sy beurt die o.17A-titel verower hetdeur Stellenberg met 12-9 ore aan te sit inhierdie eindstryd.

Die o.14A-eindstryd het ewe spannings-volle spel gelewer toe Durbanville met 13-12 deurgeskraap het teen De Kuilen.

Die Kuile kon hulle egter daaraan troosdat hul vyf Superliga-spanne almal in dieeindronde betrokke was.

Milnerton Aquatic Club (Mac) will be parti-cipating in a global sailing event, known asBart’s Bash on Sunday 21 September.

Sailing clubs from all around the worldwill be racing on the same day to set a newGuinness World Record for the biggest num-ber of boats sailing at the same time aroundthe world. In order for Mac to qualify, the

club must have a minimum of 25 boats ra-cing.

Bart’s Bash is now open to all sailors foran entry fee of R50 for adults and R20 forchildren.Funds raised will go towards theAndrew Simpson Sailing Foundation.Regis-ter online at www.bartsbash.co.uk/login-se-lect to qualify for the race.
