Elsies River, a busy bustling suburb on theCape Flats has its share of problems withcrime, but nothing has prepared the com-munity for a new threat that stalks thestreets. This new breed of criminal has left the

community reeling in shock and horror atthe heartlessness of a crime that has left asenior citizen heartbroken, sitting in a gar-den, waiting for his loved one to return.Oupa may just be an ornamental figure

in the garden of Derick Arendse, but alongwith his other ornamental pals they’remissing Ouma, who was snatched from herplace on the bench next to her “husband”.Arendse explained that a few weeks ago

he witnessed three guys jumping over thefence of his garden on the corner of South-ern Cross and Grand Vue roads, to carry offOuma.“I could not believe it,” he said.“The statue is quite heavy but they just

ran off with her. I called the police but didnotwant to go after thembecause you neverknow if they have weapons.“It is so sad that people will do such a

thing because the couple, and their friendsin my garden are so popular in the commu-nity.”Arendsepointedout that the figurines are

a fun talking point for passers-by.“People used to love to stop, and get a pic-

ture of themselves or their children withthe figurines, even the police would some-times stop to take a picture.“When shewentmissing people immedia-

tely noticed and wanted to know what hap-pened to Ouma. I could not say that she wasstolen, so I told people that she went for awalk.“Meanwhile Oupa just sits there with his

smile, but I know that he misses her.”Arendse is offering a reward for the re-

turn of Ouma.V If you have information leading to the return ofthe figurine call Arendse on 083 964 5571.

Some community heroes will be in actionfor Mandela Day tomorrow.

As the ailing Nelson Mandela turns 95on 18 July, CL Willmot Primary School inUitsig together with the CL Willmot He-roes will be honouring the Father of ourNation in a way he would be proud of.

Following Mandela’s example, the CLWillmot Heroes will be hosting a full daywhere they will be joined by other volun-teers to give their time, energy and skillto the school.

This year they will once again not onlybe inviting volunteers from all over themetropole, but also from the local commu-nity, to participate in a day of doing some-thing special for the school.

“It gives us all a great sense of pride andself worth that we, as ordinary as we are,can do things to make our community abetter place,” says Shahieda Sadan-Mack,one of the CL Willmot Heroes.

“This makes us extraordinary as agroup of committed citizens, from all ages, who know, with the little that we do, wecan change the place we are living in forthe better.”

Tomorrow the school will have severalactivities from painting the counsellingroom at the school, to planting of fruit andshade trees, erecting a vegetable tunnel, laying of grass sods for a new sports fieldand painting of the Grade R stairway.

“We need to invest in ourselves, ourcommunity, to turn the place that we live, into the community we all want,” saysBrandon Arendse, another volunteer.

“We, the community can make the big-gest difference in our communities. Thepolice force, the municipality, the city canonly do so much.”

Nedbank Parow are also playing a big

part in this year’s event.“We as private sector organisations

need to play our part as well,” says ThekoMafukalo, Nedbank Parow branch man-ager.

“All members of the greater South Afri-can society must work together, and in do-ing so, we will turn South Africa into aplace that our future generation wants tolive in, wants to earn a living, can be eco-nomically active, and has the skills to do

so.”The company has contributed a signifi-

cant stake in the project, secured sponsor-ships of grass and trees from the Universi-ty of Stellenbosch and is erecting a vegeta-ble tunnel on the day.

Tomorrow the day will start at 09:30with a special flag hoisting ceremony, aspecial piece of art-work from the learnersthat will also make up the day.V Contact Andrew Cardoza on 083 248 7916.

Next week R&B star Tevin Campbell will bein townbut thiswill also be aproudmomentfor Belhar singer Robin Pieters, whowill beone of the opening acts at the GrandWestArena. He will be part of the vocal group, The

Black Ties, taking to the stage as part of theDivos 2013 showcase on Saturday 27 July, and it’s been a journey that has not let anysetbacks keep him down.Pieters points out that when he was 16 he

realised his talent for singing and startedsinging in some boy groups on the CapeFlats.“For me it was just fun at the time, but

when I was 18 I lost my mom who wasthe only breadwinner in the house,” hesaid.“It was while I was singing at her funeral

that I realised that I would have to take mymusic more seriously because she alwaysbelieved inmy talent andwantedme to takeit further.”He admits that year, 2008, was not easy

because he enrolled at the CapeMusic Insti-tute (CMI), and itwas a struggle being a full-time student andworkingpart-time tomakeends meet.“Luckily I had people like Camillo Lom-

bard and Ezra Delport at CMI who be-lieved in me and always motivated me,” hesays.“This was where my musical journey re-

ally took flight and that belief now sees meas one of the vocal trainers at the institu-tion.“The training that I received there has led

to this proud moment for me, and probablythe stepping stone to bigger things.”Stepping stones have been happening for

this singer for some time because so far hehas been in backing vocal groups for peoplelike Karin Kortje, Chad Saaiman, ClairePhillips, LuqmaanAdams, Vicky Sampson,Loyiso Bala, Jody Williams, Zayne Adams,Jamalie, Camillo Lombard, Sasha-lee Dav-ids, Mellisa Allison, Lloyde Cele, Neville D,and even with Jonathan Butler back in2011.While he is very proud of these projects

he feels that with this performance he willbe given the opportunity to shine on hisown.“This time it is about me,” he says.

“My own work reflects the inspirationthat I find in past experiences, day to daylife, words that inspire, my interest in spir-ituality, the power of positive thinking andbelieving in possibility.“I alwayshope thatmymusicmight bring

joy and inspiration to others.“Give them the same dreams of one day

growing their own creative business intoempires.”V Divos is back for one performance only at Grand-West on Saturday 27 July. This year the show willstar multi-Grammy nominated Tevin Campbell anda stellar line-up of top South African artists includ-ing The Black Ties, Jimmy Nevis and Emo Adams.Booking at Computicket.

Some learners in Delft have some posi-tive sights for their future after an em-powering programme during the schoolholidays. The Western Cape Education Depart-

ment, Safe Schools Division, organisedthe week-long programme and the facili-tators are confident that it has made adifference in their lives.Michelle Snyman, Safe School field-

worker for the Western Cape EducationDepartment said that the success of theproject would also be seen in what theywould be taking back to their communi-ties.“This was such a successful venture

that these children want to take whatthey have learnt back into their schoolsand communities to make a positive dif-ference,” she said.Excited learners from Hindle High

School, Simunye High School, WesbankHigh School and Delft Technical HighSchool (DTHS) attended the first twodays at the DTHS school hall before theywere taken to the Department of Cultur-al Affairs’ campsite in Simondium forthe remaining three days. The topics covered during theweek in-

cluded personal development, gangster-ism, teenage pregnancy, drug and alco-hol abuse, peer mediation (resolvingconflict throughmediation), inter-gener-ational relationships,HIV/Aids, the tun-nel of change and making schools safe.“The challenge with getting such a di-

verse group to gel and work on commonsolutions is finding common ground inconfronting real issues,” continued Sny-man.“ClimbX Development Agency, who

facilitated the programme on behalf ofSafe Schools, used many different ap-proaches to take learners from theircomfort zone and into creative problemsolving.”“The morning sessions focused exclu-

sively onworkingwith them to visualise

a bright future; what is the system I needtomaintainmypush towards this future;how do I stay motivated at school and inmy life later as well as dealing with thefrustrations that might keep me back.”The programme then looked at the

Delft context (the issues learners face onadailybasis, at school and in the commu-nity).Different sections of the Delft commu-

nity were placed under the microscopeto confirm the common challenges facedby the learners.Although the areas in Delft were sepa-

rated geographically, the challenges re-mained the same with various forms ofabuse; drugs, alcohol, emotional and sex-ual, having a tremendous impact ontheir lives.“Violence is also abig problem,” added

Snyman.“They are confronted with it at school

and in their communities while gang-sterism also plays a big part while differ-ent gangs operating in the same areasleads to constant conflict.“There is also a lack of various servic-

es ranging from medical and social aswell as the lack of quick responses toemergencies, that affect them in theircommunities.”During the programme the SouthAfri-

can Police Services (SAPS) facilitated asession focusing on the use of their K9dogs in detecting drugs and explosives. The learners were very interested in

the demonstration and were fascinatedby the drug examples passed around bythe facilitators.Snyman concluded by saying that the

comments from the children bodes wellfor the future.“We are now motivated to continue

this process because they have shown usthat they want to be empowered to be-come positive forces in their communi-ties,” she said.“We will be working very closely with

them in an effort to facilitate them mak-ing a difference at their schools.”

Some young guns on the Cape’s musicscene want to grow their sounds to a biggeraudience on the local scene. The Independent Artists’ Association

(TIAA) has been formulated to ensure sus-tainability and economic growth in themu-sic industry. They have started to showcase those

sounds onSaturday afternoons at Swingersin Wetton, and so far their performanceshave been getting rave reviews from thepunters. While the resident band features Johnny

Williams on keyboards, Adrian Williamson bass,WillieMoya on drums and the phe-nomenal vocalist TJmaking hismark, theyalso invite other younger musicians to jointhem on Saturdays to have a jam and findout how this new organisation can helpthem in their careers.LestonSylvesterwho is on the committee

pointed out some research that led to thestart of this project.“In 2007 the South African music indus-

try was rated the 17th largest music indus-try in the world,” he said.“But, the artists are unable to sustain

themselves and their families. It is as-sumed that tourism keeps Cape Town jazzvenues healthier than their Gauteng coun-terparts; however, extinct festivals andclosed venues are the products of theworld-wide recession.“The unrealised wealth and potential of

the South African music industry raises aquestion that is important for any industry:work better within old paradigms, or workdifferently?”Sylvester further explained that they

wanted to work differently by using stagetime as currency.“With our afternoon sessions we want to

raise funds for the implementation of aprovident fund for artists.“The artists invest hours by performing

at no cost at a venue as his/her contribu-tion to the fund and the door takings aredonated to the fund in lieu of capital for in-vestment.”He also pointed out that while they have

started at Swingers inWetton, they hope tobe able to move the concept to areas wherethe musicians want to perform.“We are just lucky that Kevin Harris

of the venue believes in what we want todo and is one of our partners in the ven-ture.”“All we want now is that the community

ofmusic lovers come out on a Saturday andexperience the music that we can make,”he says.Kevin Harris of Swingers and Spontane-

ous Entertainment have partnered inbringing this vision to fruition along withOude Meester who have agreed to matchthe amount raised at the door after threemonths.V The Saturday afternoon session starts at 16:00at Swingers, 1 Wetwyn Road, Wetton. Contact Les-ton Sylvester on 071 190 9409.

Arcadian alumni are getting to-gether to make a difference attheir alma mater.Former learners from Arca-

dia Senior Secondary School inBonteheuwel are calling ontheir peers to restore the schoolto its former glory. This past weekend some of

them were hard at work at theschool armed with paint brush-es and rollers to improve condi-tions at the school.Zelda Lategan, one of the

alumni committee members, explained that this new initia-tive at the school came aboutthrough Facebook.“There is a Facebook page for

the school and some of us sawthat there was a posting aboutthe bad conditions at theschool,” she said.“During April some of us

from 1986 had a social meetingand we started making plansabout fixing the school andmaintaining an on-going rela-tionship.“This led to our first meeting

in June this year and it was at-tended by the principal, govern-ing body, security at school andsome of the former learners.“We are hoping that more

former learners, even educatorsand present learners join us be-cause we want to restore prideat the school again.”

Own pocketsLategan added that for the ac-

tivities on Saturday paint wasdonated by Dulux, but theybought the other equipmentneeded from their own pockets, and this was just the start oftheir planned activities at theschool.“We want to improve the con-

dition of the school to avoid thepossibility of it closing down.“It would be very sad if the

history at Arcadia is just wipedaway because it has a rich lega-

cy of producing some respectedsport people and academicsover the years.“For us in this alumni associ-

ation it is part of who we are to-day and it was the foundationfor what we have achieved inour lives,” she said. She also pointed out that they

wanted the surrounding com-munity to join them in their ef-forts at the school.“We want to ask the commu-

nity to take ownership of thebuilding; it is their building andthey should take care of it andstop people from breaking theschool down.“Constant burglaries have

seen electrical wiring stolenevery time and it is costly to re-place.“People want to know what

happens to the money allocatedto the school, and the proof isthere for them every time thewiring has to be replaced.”

Learners involvedThegroup is alsohoping to get

learners involved in restoringthe school, and so restore pridein themselves in order toachieve their positive potentialin life.“This week on Mandela Day

we will start to get learners in-volved and from thereweare go-ing to fix the school step bystep,” continued Lategan.“We would like to start with

the cleaning up of the school inorder for the learners to step in-to a more clean, positive andhealthy environment.“In this waywewant learners

to feel proud of the school, andthen also have pride in them-selves.“Arcadia was always one of

the best schools in the area andthat is whywewant to start thisjourney to make it the bestagain.”V Lategan can be contacted on 021905 8616 (office hours) or email [email protected].

Young bloodfor Vasco FCTHOMAS CAROLUS

It’s all change at Vasco Da Gama footballclub, with the news that long-time clubstalwarts Keenin Lesch and Bradley Au-

gust will be in charge of the team for thenew season.Lesch spent most of his career at Vasco

Da Gama, over a decade, before joining Na-tional First Division newcomers MilanoUnited for the 2012/2013 campaign. But, it was an injury-filled season for the

industriousmidfielder, whose appearanceswere limited to mainly come from thebench. At 32, Lesch will almost certainly be the

youngest coach in the top two tiers of SouthAfrican football. He will be assisted byformer team-mate August, who is just twoyears older.

HellenicAugust made his name as a striker for

Hellenic, spending some of his career inDenmark before returning to South Africa.Upon arrival, he turned out for Ajax CapeTown,MaritzburgUnitedandSantos beforeending his playing career with Vasco DaGama.“I’m very excited and up for the chal-

lenge,” the former Bafana Bafana marks-man said.“It’s a whole new world for me, but Keen-

in and I are two guys with a lot of energywho are determined to make the most ofthis opportunity.“Westarted lastMondayandweare in the

process of looking at what players we willneed for the season.“At this stage we are not going to put too

much pressure on ourselves, but hope to geta solid start in our first five or six gamesand itwill be important to establisha strongdefence to achieve this,” he explained.August, who coached in the Second Divi-

sion last season, wants to make it difficultfor opposing sides to take anything awayfrom Vasco’s home ground.“We want to return to the old days, when

teams and players really feared coming toParow Park,” he said.

PSLEstablished in 1980, Vasco Da Gama are

one Cape Town’s older clubs. They were promoted to the PSL in the

2010/2011 season but finished 15th andwererelegated.Last season the side finished inninth spot

under coach Tony De Nobrega. It should be noted that with several disci-

plinary hearings still outstanding it maychange.Polokwane City ended in top position on

the National First Division table after beat-ingRosesUnited 1-0 at theBotshabeloStadi-um.Santos’ 2-1 victory over Jomo Cosmos

down in Cape Town saw the People’s Teaminto second spot, while a 1-all draw up inMpumalanga resulted in Black Aces finish-ing third, while Thanda Royal Zulu are infourth spot. The Premier Soccer League has con-

firmed receiving anappeal, SAFA, fromNa-tional First Division club ThandaRoyal Zu-lu.They are appealing a PSL Disciplinary

Committee verdict relating to their failureto honour NFD fixtures last year.

LIAM MOSES

Hamiltons RFC suffered a dip in formahead of what could be a season-de-fining clash against Super League A

log leaders Durbanville-Bellville thisweekend.

The Sea Point side struggled to a narrowvictory over seventh-placed Belhar on Sat-urday, after brushing aside opposition ofsimilar stature in their previous twogames.

Hammies went into the encounter on theback of two runaway victories over Tyger-berg and Bellville, and were expected tosimply notch up another victory.

True to form and as expected, South Af-rica’s oldest side pounced early and had a7-0 lead within five minutes, after wingJanno van Zyl scored in the left-hand cor-ner and added the extras himself.

InterceptHowever, the proverbial script was torn

up five minutes later when Belhar equal-ised against the run of play.

Wing Angelo Nelson intercepted a straypass inside his half and sprinted 60m toscore between the sticks. Fullback AdrianRoberts converted.

But the try didn’t deter Hamiltons andtheir continued early-match dominancesaw Van Zyl reclaim the lead again withtwo penalties.

While Hammies had the ascendancy inthe first 20 minutes, the second quarter be-longed to Belhar.

The home side camped in oppositionhalf, monopolising territory and posses-

sion thanks to Hammies’ continued offsideand breakdown infringements.

Unlike Hamiltons, Belhar failed to turntheir superiority into points and could onlymuster a penalty – from the boot of Roberts– before the half-time whistle.

The game opened significantly in the sec-ond half, but unforced errors and last gasp de-fence meant neither side could breakthrough.

Solid defenceVan Zyl missed a penalty in the 51st

minute, but succeeded with his second at-tempt of the half just two minutes later. Hestretched the lead to nine points in the 20thminute, but Roberts clawed it back to 13-19in the 24th.

Belhar threw everything at their oppo-nents in the final 15, but stoic defence se-

cured victory for the title contenders. The win leaves Hammies in second on the

table and trailing Durb-Bell by just threepoints, with both sides having played 11matches. Saturday’s game (in Sea Point at16:00) will be Hamiltons’ fourth in as manyweeks, while Durb-Bell return to action aftera three week break. The winner of the gamewill ascend to the top of the standings.
