Patrons visiting restaurants, pubs andclubs in Edward Street have raised thealarm about car break-ins.

While Bellville police confirm they areaware of these incidents and have taken ac-tion, they hope with the introduction of theTyger Valley Central Improvement District(CID) this year, crime levels will decrease.“We are aware of the break-ins into cars

and ask the vehicle owners not to leave any-thing in their cars to attract the attention ofcriminals,” says Major Fienie Nimb, Bell-

ville police spokesperson.“We were also made aware of the hijack-

ings at robots in Durban Road and are doingeverything possible to catch the culprits.Hopefully the new Tyger Valley CID will as-sist us in combating crime and address theseissues when they come into operation on[Friday] 1 July.”Nimbsays contributing factors to these in-

cidents are issues relating to public parking,crime and grime and street people. She ex-plains these are someof the challenges inEd-ward Street and the greater Tyger Valleyprecinct. This includes the Upper Oakdale

The Voortrekker Road City Improve-ment District (VRCID) has deniedclaims that their security officers

sprayed sleeping homeless people withwater in the Teerpad parking lot on Tues-day 17 May.According to chief operations officer,

Derek Bock not everyone is familiar withthe work the VRCID security officers aredoing.He saida small numberofhomeless peo-

ple are trying to make the work of the se-curity officers difficult by continuing tobeg, litter and accusing them of takingtheir belongings.“Our staff did spray certain areas in

Bellville and Parow, but we categoricallydeny spraying any person. Where peopleare sleeping, they were woken up andasked tomove aside aswe needed to spraythose areas due to thehealthhazard of fae-ces and urine and leftover food, which at-tract rats. The duties of the VRCID securi-ty officers provide an over and above ser-vice to that of SAPS and City LawEnforcement.Wepatrol the streets andas-

sist in curbing criminal activities. We al-so act as the ‘eyes and ears’ on the street.The last week alone our officers have per-formed citizen arrests by apprehendingcriminals who break into motor vehicles.These criminals are then taken to SAPSand charged,” said Bock.The VRCID has six mobile patrol vehi-

cles as backup for the officers on foot.Whenever they are confronted or feel out-numbered, they call for backup via theirradios.The management team is also there to

diffuse a possible confrontation, but areconstantly being verbally abused by justdoing their job, according to Bock.“To behomeless is not a crime, but Iwill

not allow my staff to be verbally abused,attacked or lied about by a smallminorityof homeless people who do not want to behelped off the streets. This not only per-tains to the homeless but also to any per-son who attacks or verbally abuses ourstaff. My suggestion to address the home-less situation is to have more bed spacefor the homeless in Cape Town, and morejobs. This is one of the reasons why wepartnered with MES (Mould Empower

Serve) in Bellville and Parow. They havea job programme where people can cleanthe streets amongst others for payment,”said Bock. Some of the homeless havebeen living on the streets for years andthat is all they know. The VRCID, via itssocial development department, engageswith the homeless on a daily basis and of-fers them a job via MES, reunites themwith their families,wherever thatmaybe,and tries to place them in a shelter.“Our engagement with the homeless

have been given a boost with the appoint-ment of two field workers to assist our so-cial developmentmanager. There are stillmany areas which are not safe and clean,like the area around the Bellville taxirank and station, so this will be our nextproject,” said Bock.Businesses and people who want to be-

ed and submitted to the City. In March itwas approved by full council.This will secure the passage between

VoortrekkerRoad and theDurbanville CBDand join Wellington Road.“Quinton Rossi is the chairperson of the

Tygervalley CID steering committee andwill no doubt be the chairperson of theboard of the Tygervalley CID once they arein operation in July,” according to Van derMerwe.Van der Merwe also said that the City

supports the establishmentof theTygerVal-ley improvement district and recognisesthe contribution that it will make to sur-rounding business and residential districts.DerekBock, chief operations officer of the

VRCID, says he is looking forward to work-

ing with the Tyger Valley CID.“We have a good working relationship

and have already discussed how we are go-ing to work together as our boundaries bor-der on one another at the N1-Durban Roadintersection,” says Block.“Unfortunately a CID cannot work out-

side its boundaries, so we will meet eachother ‘halfway’. I am available if they needinformation on how the VRCID is run to en-hance theirs, and they are welcome to con-tact me,” he says.

Agt beoordelaars het na al die in-skrywings gekyk en die wêreldwyewenners is toe aangewys. Deelnemersvan Denemarke, Amerika, Engelanden Kanada het kwaai kompetisie ge-bied en sy was die enigste deelnemerwat in die klavier-afdeling meegedinghet.

“Die meeste deelnemers was al opuniversiteit of by baie goeie musiek-skole. Vir die kompetisie moes ek neteen stuk instuur en het Black Earthdeur Fazil Say as my inskrywing uitge-voer.

“Ek het die opname op 15-jarige ou-derdom gemaak en was baie opgewon-de om wel plek te kry, al het my speldie afgelope twee jaar verbeter en ver-ander.

“Jy kan na my opname op YouTubegaan luister. Dis ’n moderne stuk enwat die uitvoering so interessantmaak, is dat ek die klawers van die kla-vier ‘pluk’ in plaas van daarop speel,”sê sy.

Annerike is van jongs af aan musiekblootgestel en dit is geen wonder dat sy somusikaal is nie.

Haar ouers, Hannelize en Deon, is grootmusiekliefhebbers. Haar ma was destydsAfrikaans Hoër Seunskool (Affies) in Preto-ria se koordirigent en het oorsee koorklanken dirigeertegniek by Eric Ericson in Praagontvang saam met die Praag se kamerkoor.Haar pa het ’n beurs gewen om drie maandeopera in Covent Garden in Engeland tegaan studeer.

Haar pa is die skoolhoof van HoërskoolBellville en haar ma ’n musiekonderwyseren beoordelaar by die ATKV-koorkompeti-sies. Haar ma het ook al voorheen die Wê-reld-koorolimpiade met Affies se kore ge-

wen en is nou die koordirigent by die Hoër-skool Bellville en die Laerskool Bellpark.

“Ongelukkig was daar geen pryse aan dieaanlyn-kompetisie verbonde nie, net die di-ploma en titel as internasionale wenner,maar dit sal goed lyk op my CV.

“Ek moet my klarinet-juffrou, Mareliseden Haan, bedank vir haar aanmoedigingom in te skryf nadat sy die advertensie ge-sien het. Dr. Mario Nell, my klavieronder-wyser by die Universiteit Stellenbosch, ismy inspirasie.”

Annerike is ’n veelsydige leerder. Syspeel ook eerstespan-hokkie by die skool enneem aan debat- en redenaarskompetisiesdeel. “My droom is om mense te oortuig datklassieke musiek nie vervelig is nie,” sê sy.

Ouers en leerders van die Laerskool Evers-dal het op Vrydag 20 Mei baie pret gehad metdie speseryprojek wat elke tweede jaar deurEveraksie, die ouer-onderwysersvereniging,aangebied word.

Die hoogtepunt was toe twee onderwysers,Luan Rademeyer en Jacobus de Waal, me-kaar in ’n pannekoekstryd gepak het. Dieskool se eie “Ina Paarman”, Gys Burger, wasdie beoordelaar en die petalje het vir baiepret gesorg.

Christiana Smit, woordvoerder van Evers-dal, het gesê dat die projek net elke tweedejaar gehou kan word, want dit verg baie tydom dit te organiseer, bestellings en geld tehanteer en ook te sorg dat die bestellings bydie regte mense uitkom.

“Ons praat hier van honderdduisende ran-de en alles word deur die ouers hanteer. Diespeseryprojek is ’n geldinsamelingsprojek

wat die Everaksie doen. Die ouers moet diebestelvorms gereed kry en die bekendstellingmoet van so ’n aard wees dat dit die kindersopgewonde maak. Hulle is ook verantwoor-delik vir die hantering en uitdeel van dielaaste pakkie speserye en die bestellings kanwissel tussen R15 en R20 per item,” sê sy.

Die ouers kom met die voorstel vir ’n temavir elke bekendstelling in die saal en gebruikvan die onderwysers om die karakters ko-mies oor te dra. Die kinders geniet die komie-se sy van die onderwysers die meeste tydensdie bekendstelling, want hulle tree dan opsoos kinders.

“Nog projekte wat die Everaksie vanjaarsuksesvol afgehandel het, is die pretloop endie skattejag wat aan die einde van die eerstekwartaal plaasgevind het. An armed response officer of DistrictBassett was ambushed and attackedwhen he attended to an alarm activa-

tion last Wednesday evening on a small-holding on Westerdale Road outside Dur-banville.

It seemed that the burglars were hidingin the shrubs andbushes andplanned to robthe 42-year-old response officer, Phillip vanEck from Bellville, of his firearm.Van Eck was dispatched to the farm just

before 19:00 and started to investigate whatcaused the alarm to go off, saidMarkHorst-man, operational manager at District Bas-sett.

When he went around a corner, he hearda noise behind him. When he turnedaround, he saw threemenwho started to at-tack him with a metal pipe and knives.He was left with serious head and back

injuries as well as several cuts to his handsand body.According toVanEck theykept onattack-

inghim in a frenzy to get to his firearm.Oneof the suspects kept on shouting at the othertwo suspects in Afrikaans: “Maak homdood!”

However, Van Eckmanaged to fend themoff and retain his firearm, but did not man-age to fire any shots at the suspects.The attackers left him lying next to the

building before fleeing towards the moun-tain. He contacted his office and requestedbackup.

District Bassett officers, neighbourhoodwatch members as well as Durbanville po-lice, were informed and were on the scenewithin minutes to assist.

ER24 paramedics arrived a short while

later and took Van Eck to the MediclinicDurbanville for medical treatment. He waskept overnight and discharged the nextmorning, said Horstman.

Van Eck is now recovering at home,Horstman said. “This just shows how vul-nerable security and police officers, whocarry firearms, are in such situations,” hesaid.

The property on the smallholding is va-cant and is being renovated. Nothing wasstolen andnoattemptwasmade to break-in,Horstman said.

According to Lieutenant Marchell Rhodeof Durbanville police nobody has been ar-rested yet.

Die veldtog vir die bywerking van die werksoekersdatabasis is ’n Stadsinisiatief wat gemik isop die registrasie van alle lede van die gemeenskap wat werkloos is en in tydelike basiese tothalfgeskoolde werksgeleenthede deur Stadsprojekte belangstel. Nog ‘n mikpunt is om diebesonderhede by te werk van almal wat reeds op die werksoekersdatabasis geregistreer is.Die idee is om ’n databasis te hê met geldige besonderhede van almal wat geregistreer is(d.w.s. hul vaardighede, kontaknommers en adresse).

Al langer as ’n maand word kontakbesonderhede telefonies en per SMS as deel van dieprojek geverifieer.

Gedurende fase 3 van hierdie projek sal EPWP­werkers van huis tot huis in gemeenskappebeweeg om mense te help om die werksoekersdatabasis­registrasievorms in te vul, wat danvir elektroniese verwerking aan subraadskantore oorhandig sal word.

Die gemeenskap word aangemoedig om:

• Die EPWP­werkers te help om hul werk te doen• ’n Gesertifiseerde afskrif van hul ID’s byderhand te hou want dit moet saam met hul

registrasievorm vir verwerking ingedien word

“My pa en my swaer het maar blinde-lings die omskepping aangepak en hul na-weke opgeoffer omalles te doen.Mymahetdie geldsake dopgehou. Verder het ons bykennisse raad gekry,” vertel Anri.

Hulp het van alle kante gekom – diemaatskappy waar hulle die aluminium ge-koop het, het dit gratis geïnstalleer, haarswaer, André Fourie, het gehelp met dievloer en eenvanhaar kliënte het gesorg virdie alarmstelsel. Benewens lugversorging,’n yskas, wasbak, TV en klanksisteem isdaar ook ’n gasgeiser vir warm water. Nou en dan is sy ná ure beskikbaar virmans wat nie bedags by ’n haarsalon kanuitkom nie en elke tweede week staan sygereed by die Hoërskool Brackenfell virenige seunwat ’n short backand sidesbeno-dig.

“Sonder familie en God sou ek nie hiergewees het nie; alles het net so gou en goed

afgeloop. Baie mense bid vir my onderne-ming, so ek glo daarin. Met ’n goeie harten harde werk kan ’n mens dinge laat ge-beur,” sê Anri, wat besluit het om R5 vanelke sny aan die Ray of Sunshine-huis virweggooi-babas te skenk.

“Ek het een Saterdag met die kinders ge-speel toe vriendeklere endoeke gaanaflaaihet. Van toe af het ek gehoop ek kan iewersiets vir hulle doen, en nou kan ek.”

Om haar te help met korporatiewe en an-

der geleenthede het sy haar eerste werkne-mer in diens geneem, Dillan Abrahamsvan Kraaifontein, wie se susters saam methaar by die salon in Tygervallei werk.

“Ek en Dillan werk lekker saam en leervan mekaar. Ek wil hê hy moet beter doenin die lewe, want hy’s goedhartig en hetbaie talent. Miskien kan hy eendag sy eiebussie hê onder my handelsmerk, Clipper-headz. Ek probeer bou aan ’n droom en ekwil hê ander moet dieselfde doen.”

The breakfast team of Bobby Brown andLindy Hibbard on Smile 90.4FM providedmore than smiles for The Haven night shel-ter during May.

From Monday 23 May the presenters tookon the challenge to raise 9040 beds for TheHaven night shelter by Friday 27 May.

To do this, they needed listeners to partic-ipate in the challenge by donating R12 tohelp a less fortunate person to participatein The Haven’s rehabilitation programme.

The organisation, which has 15 sheltersthroughout the Western Cape, providestheir residents with a rehabilitation pro-gramme to integrate them back into theircommunities, providing each with food,shelter and the necessary social services re-quired.

Listeners leaped in and the breakfastteam was overwhelmed by the supportshown towards this charity drive.

Lois O’Brien, managing director of Smile90.4FM, explains listener contributionsquickly reached the set targets.

“In two days they broke two targets setby the team,” she says.

“The initial target of 9040 and a second

target of 20 000 were reached by Tuesday,but more was in store when listeners decid-ed that the campaign should continue untilFriday with a target of 50 000 beds.”

Excitement was high on Friday morningwhen the presenters went out to the nightshelter in District 6 to broadcast from thefacility.

They were invited there by Hassan Khan,director of The Haven night shelter, whowanted them to experience the activities ofthe facility itself in the final hours leadingup to the announcement of the final dona-tion.

Cheers erupted just before 09:00 when theteam announced that the campaign hadraised funds for 59 040 beds.

But, as they say in the classics, that’s notall, folks.

O’Brien announced that the figure wasset to rise because they will be continuingtheir campaign until Friday 3 June.

Die ondersoek, wat nog sowat 4 777 andersoortgelyke bedrogsake ondersoek, duurvoort en verdere arrestasies word verwag.

Veral bejaardes is die afgelope jaar deurmiddel van hul Sassa-debietkaart besteeldeur onregmatige aftrekkings wat van hulreeds karige pensioengelde afgetrek word.In Februarie het ’n Sassa-afvaardiging so-

Die Valke het bevestig dat verskeie werk-nemers by CPS ook ondersoek word. DieWes-Kaapse departement van maatskaplikeontwikkeling het die deurbraak verwelkom.

“Die feit dat agt van die verdagtes wat inhegtenis geneem is, werknemers van Sassa

is, bevestig ons vermoede dat Sassa se stel-sels korrup is,” het minister Albert FritzMaandag gesê.Hy is veral bekommerd oor die feit dat die

ses verdagtes, wat nie by Sassa werksaamwas nie, in Kaapstad vasgetrek is.

“Ek hoop dat die arrestasies ’n sterk bood-skap sal uitstuur na enige ander misdadi-gers wat by die bedrogspul betrokke is.”

I was particularly interested inthe letter from Susie Denning,about the refusal of the TrafficDepartment to give her 87-year-old mother a disabled parkingdisc because she can still drivea car, but is effectively disa-bled from actually walkingeasily due to severe osteoporo-sis (TB, 25 May).

Of course, whoever in theTraffic Department wasresponsible for making thedecision, clearly demonstratedtheir complete ignorance aboutthe difference for the elderlybetween walking and driving amotor car.

disabled parking bay pass to anindividual who has greatdifficulty in walking, but candrive in perfect safety, needs aproper consideration for thebenefit of Traffic Departmentsin the Western Cape.But at least one large shop-

ping mall we frequently use hasthe answer, because it allocatesa small number of parking bayswhich are indicated by signswith figures using walkingsticks – Canal Walk.Obviously someone there was

fully aware of the problem,most likely with experiencefrom elderly members of theirown family. It is a highlycommendable feature.

some time to find their unique sound.“There were a couple of false starts, butwhen Ewald and Eugene sat together andwrote ‘Smiling’ we knew there was some-thing worth pursuing. Deon came in on bassand Graeme joined on drums a few months

later.”The result was a signature that they de-

scribe as essentially pop, but with urban,rock and EDM elements.“I know it might seem strange to say we

took a while to find a sound that is prettystraight ahead, but it did,” says Graeme,adding: “Writing a good pop song whilemaintaining an identifiable sound and in-tegrity to themusicyouenjoy is challenging,and we have really come to realise that it’sall about the song.”He adds this sometimes means checking

influences, “and your ego”, at the door, de-spite all four members having pretty strongopinions.While it’s been two years since the release

of Negatives, Graeme says they are continu-ally writing new music and are planning onreleasing new singles in the near future.“The music scene is changing so quickly

and stand-alone singles are more importantnow than they were 10 or 20 years ago, sowe put a lot of effort into getting singles outthere.”Having said that though, Graeme also

hints that theremay be a new album “on thehorizon”.For their winter tour, Monark will be

joined by rising star Majozi who’s beensteadily gainingmomentum in the local mu-sic scene over the last few years. He de-scribes his music as “indie -folk with subtleelectro influences”.“He’s a good friend of ours; we’ve worked

- Ensure that the publication adheres to all governing laws, as well as the Press Codeof South Africa;

- Coordinate news gathering daily and oversee and report on the content-productionprocesses of the newspaper to ensure all deadlines are met;

- Liaise with management, advertising and marketing divisions to ensure the bestpossible product is produced on a daily or weekly basis;

- Promote commercial opportunities in cooperation with the advertising department;- Represent the publication in a credible, professional and ethical manner; and- Manage and control the editorial budget and costs.

Requirements:- Relevant tertiary qualification in journalism or media studies- Experience Five years' experience in an editorial environment- Two years in a senior position- Prior knowledge Thorough working knowledge of newspaper production and themedia environment;

- Well-developed writing and editing ability in required languages;- Proficiency in relevant computer applications and packages;- Thorough understanding of the target market of the publication;- Expert knowledge of media laws.- A well-established contact base and network within the community

Brakke kry groot lofná taai rugbystryd

Bellville High School played host to theu.16 Coca-Cola Grant Khomo and u.18 Co-ca-Cola Craven Week trials, where theboys compete for a spot to play in the Co-ca-Cola Youth Weeks taking place fromMonday 4 to Friday 8 July and Saturday11 to Saturday 16 July respectively.These players are from various schoolsin the Western Cape, and only the bestwill make it to the final provincial teamsfor DHL Western Province.Ronan Witten from Brackenfell Highhas made his school and family proud bybeing chosen as one of only eight playersat Brackenfell HighSchool to participate inthe trials. His mom, ReneWitten, adds: “He isn’teven supposed to be at thetrials.”Ronan adds: “They se-lected eight players fromBrackenfell High Schoolto go to the first round oftrials and I wasn’t one ofthem. I was sitting inclass, well aware of thefact that it was the firstday of trials, and obvious-ly I was sad and disap-pointed for not making itthrough. However, I wasthen called to my coach’soffice and told to getready. I was on my way toplay in the first trials, andI was ecstatic.“It was quite a rush, asitwas the last periodof theday, so I had to run andcall my mom to bring my

clothes. I had a great time, and a prettysolid game.” This humble tight-head propis only 16 years old and competing in theu.18 trials, where he is taking it one gameat a time, whilst still focusing on hisschool’s rugby season where he plays ina strong first team. The driving force be-hind him is strong family support, whichhe has in abundance. His mother is at ev-ery game towatch her son apply his tradebetween the four white lines.For Ronan, this is a step in the right di-rection for making his dream of playingprovincial rugby a reality.
