Ryan and Sean Rack have always known paint. Their earliest memories revolve around it…..the smell of it, the feel of it, the endless rainbow when they close their eyes.

From school afternoons spent in their father’s garage as the mixed paints, their first job learning the secrets of the trade, to the unbelievably proud day when they opened the doors

to their very first paint store…..and carried on the family tradition.

Their father, his father before him….this is their lineage liberally splashed with paint. Midas is more than just the continuation of their family tradition. It runs far deeper. It is their passion. One that has been nurtured and mastered through three generations, drawn the respect of an

exacting paint industry and lovingly shared with customers who have, through the years become friends.

So from sharing secrets about which paint will last longest, or creating a special shade just for you, to dropping by to lend a hand with your planning and renovations, nothing is too much

effort because here at Midas Earthcote Tygervalley we are committed to two things – our craft and sharing it with you.

We are particularly proud of recent technological improvements in our colorant systems at Midas Earthcote.

Within the Freeworld Coatings Group we have found new ways of producing excellent, high quality colorants that

contain NO GLYCOL, an ingredient traditionally used in most pain colorant systems and has been proven to be one of the

most environmentally unsound constituents in paint. Our unique product solutions and our long-standing relationships

with major paint contractors and other leaders in the construction industry have resulted in our company being considered for and winning numerous big build contracts.

These include, amongst others, The Cape Sands, Groote Kerk in Adderley Street, Hidden Valley Winery and the Cape Grace

Hotel.

PROJECT: Cape Sands, Beach Rd, Strand

PAINT CONTRACTOR: Pierre Volschenk

MIDAS REPRESENTATIVE: Sean Rack (082 467 4342) & Cyril Bekker

SPECIFICATION: MIDAS ENVIROLITE Midamite (Coarse) and MIDAS ENVIROLITE Midafelt 225 WHAT WAS NEEDED: The Cape Sands, a landmark building on the beachfront in the Strand, was looking good in every respect. However, surface imperfections, conspicuous with the glare at the coast, posed a challenge to Pierre Volschenk contractors, who were tasked to finesse the finish. Volschenk worked with Midas Paints retailers Cyril Bekker and Sean Rack to come up with a cost effective, quality finish.

THE MIDAS SOLUTION: A paint system that conceals imperfections while providing a subtle texture. The first coat, Envirolite Midamite (Coarse), has a heavy stipple texture to create a uniform surface. This was over-coated with Envirolite Zero VOC exterior acrylic, 225 Midafelt. These robust products also stand up well to weather at the coast. Being matt, Envirolite 225 Midafelt helps to diffuse and reduce glare from the sea. This was the optimum solution, considering that re-plastering wasn’t an option.

Conventional acrylic paint at a rate of 8m2/L cannot cover and correct what a textured paint like Envirolite Midamite can do at 1.5m2/L.

“We have other coatings in our stable that help to fill hairline cracks and surface imperfections,” said Midas Paints MD, Mike Vadas. “Our Envirolite Fresco paint is also very viscous and has excellent filling properties. Fresco, being an Envirolite Zero VOC product, is also an environmentally responsible choice – like 225 Midafelt and Midamite.”

ENVIROLITE MIDAMITE (COARSE): Durable, textured exterior coating. Ideal for concealing fine hairline cracks. Midamite Fine: Zero VOC. Midamite Coarse: Low VOC.

ENVIROLITE 225 MIDAFELT: Superior matt finishing coat with unsurpassed hiding power and good mould resistance. ZERO VOC

WHAT WAS NEEDED: The historic Goote Kerk in Adderley Street, Cape Town, underwent an extensive refurbishment in 2011. The building, which dates back to the year 1700 has a significant history and is recorded as the oldest church in South Africa still on its original premises. Said Peter Jäck of Indawo

Painting and Waterproofing: “History will remain hidden if heritage buildings are not restored and protected from a harsh climate – and buildings that form part of our heritage demand extra care. Restoring historical buildings involves more than a coat of paint. Inspecting the surfaces of the structures is important to avoid painting over potential problem areas. All surfaces need to be thoroughly cleaned and a suitable primer applied, where it is needed, before painting the final coat with a product that ensures sustained integrity of the walls’ outer layers.

The structure has been superbly maintained, testament to the owner’s respect for the church’s history.” Besides the need to preserve its historical legacy, the church is in constant use, so it was important to use fume-free products.

THE MIDAS SOLUTION: The ideal solution was provided by Midas Envirolite. These reduced VOC acrylics were used extensively inside and out, in broken whites and earthy neutrals. The Envirolite Zero VOC range has a palette of neutrals and naturals that was 100% appropriate to the context, honouring the historical integrity of features like the ornate pulpit resting on the shoulders of two lions, carved by the legendary sculptor, Anton Anreith.

It was also a significant  advantage to be working with a fume-free paint in a building that needs to maintain a sense of sanctity.

ENVIROLITE: A Zero VOC and reduced VOC range of water-based treatment products, preparation products, primers and topcoats, formulated to limit environmental impact. Better for air quality, Envirolite does not contain those raw materials in paint that are potentially harmful to human health. It is also free of Glycol, Formaldehyde and APEO.

PROJECT: Hidden Valley WineryPAINT CONTRACTOR: BL Williams with Qualytech

MIDAS REPRESENTATIVE: Sean Rack (082 467 4342)

SPECIFICATION: MIDAS Steracon

WHAT WAS NEEDED: The Hidden Valley Winery in Stellenbosch takes a scientific approach to the art of making award-winning wines. So when it came to keeping all the interior surfaces suitable for wine production, the project managers needed a best of breed solution.

THE MIDAS SOLUTION: Anti-bacterial paint products in Midas Steracon paint systems contain Byotrol TM, an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal additive that repels bacteria, fungi and other potentially harmful microbes.

Ideal for protection against harmful microbes, Steracon products are bio-degradable and comply with SABS 1853 food standard. Steracon is a customised, service-linked solution for industries that need to maintain hygienic conditions. Paints and decontamination solutions are supplied by Midas Earthcote, while the application is independently managed and monitored by Qualytech. A 3-year warrantyis supplied, extendable indefinitely with a maintenance contract.

In the case of Hidden Valley Winery, Qualytech worked alongside builders and paint contractors BL Williams, testing the bacteria count on site before painting began, and then re-testing after application to ensure that the bacteria count was safely below 1000 RRU’s - the baseline safety indicator for bacterial presence.

Said John Foyn, Qualytech consultant: “After our labs have taken successful swab tests of the walls for bacterial presence, we issue a certificate of efficacy to the paint contractor and their client - in this case, Hidden Valley Winery. This is a joint initiative with Midas Earthcote, which owns exclusive rights to the use of ByotrolTM bacteriafighting additive in South Africa and all SADEC countries.”

Midas Earthcote supplies Steracon coatings to breweries owned by the largest beer manufacturing group, globally. Besides food and beverage production plants, Steracon has become the coating of choice in abattoirs, clinics, hospitals and domestic projects.

STERACON: A range of Midas coatings containing ZERO VOC Byotrol TM, an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal additive that repels bacteria, fungi and other potentially harmful microbes. Ideal for wineries, breweries, food production plants, hospitals and clinics.

PROJECT: Cape Grace HotelWHAT WAS NEEDED: The exterior of the refurbished Cape Grace Hotel needed a finish that would wear well next to the sea and docks, be weather resistant and, like the interior, deliver an aesthetic that straddles the historic and contemporary.

Interior finishes needed to play to the idea of a layering of texture, creating a look that is both contemporary and reminiscent of the elegance and history of the old Cape. Aesthetically, the walls had to “pull the elements together” – and be low maintenance.

THE MIDAS SOLUTION: For the exterior, paint artist and colourist Tiziana Giardini custom mixed a warm, earthy shade of ochre in Midas Fresco.

This statement colour gives personality to the classic architecture in a way that is reminiscent of Huguenot flamboyance. “We used Midas Fresco Envirolite for practical and aesthetic reasons,” said Tiziana, who provided paint effects for the project. “Fresco is a robust, gritty coating that very efficiently conceals hairline cracks and will last well in all weather conditions at the coast. The ultra-matt graded texture softens the look, which gives the building elegance.” For the interior, Weixelbaumer Design commissioned Tiziana to recommend a restful, unobtrusive palette of textured colour. Said Tiziana ‘Kathi Weixelbaumer has a great eye for colour and it was a privilege to work alongside her, providing interpretations to her interior approach. It was an organic creative process. I was given fabrics and other interior pieces as inspiration and from those I developed a customised paint colour

palette for each room.

Nothing came straight out of a tin. I used special pigments and made up my own recipes, using Midas 240 acrylics as a base and my own special tinted ageing glaze to take the edge off. This gave the walls a broken, lived-in look that has a lot of movement.”

The use of a washable ageing glaze over Midas Envirolite 240 acrylic delivers durability. The worn, broken look creates a seamlessness between the walls and other interior elements, like washed timber and hand-painted fabrics.

FRESCO ENVIROLITE: A reduced VOC gritty exterior coating that does not streak or mottle, fills hairline cracks, conceals surface imperfections and endures harsh weather.

240 MIDALUX ENVIROLITE: A high quality, washable, Zero VOC acrylic topcoat, formulated to limit environmental impact. Better for air quality, Envirolite does not contain those raw materials in paint that are potentially harmful to human health. It is also free of Glycol, Formaldehyde and APEO.
