Perception

• The process by which an individualselects, organizes, and interprets stimuliinto a meaningful and coherent picture ofthe world

• How we see the world around us

Elements of Perception• Sensation: The immediate and direct response of the

sensory organs to stimuli (a stimulus is any unit ofsensory input).

• Absolute threshold: the lowest level at which anindividual can experience a sensation.

• Differential threshold: Minimal difference that canbe detected between two similar stimuli (also known asthe just noticeable difference (the j.n.d.)

• Subliminal perception: Stimuli that are too weak ortoo brief to be consciously seen or heard may be strongenough to be perceived by one or more receptor cells.No research evidence that subliminal advertising cancause behavior changes

Weber’s Law• The j.n.d. between two stimuli is not an

absolute amount but an amount relative tothe intensity of the first stimulus

• Weber’s law states that the stronger theinitial stimulus, the greater the additionalintensity needed for the second stimulus tobe perceived as different. Marketers need todetermine the relevant level of j.n.d. so that negativechanges are not readily discernible to the public whileproduct/service improvements are very apparent toconsumers
