Types of Reactions

There are many ways to categorize chemical reactions, but there are five general reaction types.• Combination• Decomposition• Single Replacement• Double Replacement• Combustion

Combination Reactions

A combination reaction is when two or more substances react to form a single substance.

Combination reactions are most common with two or more elements or compounds.

For example, rust is a combination reaction with oxygen and a metal.

More on Combination Reactions

There are three types of combination reactions.• Reaction between two or more elements• Reactions between elements and compounds• Reaction between two compoundsMost combination reactions in nature are exothermic (release heat). This is from the large amounts of energy formed from natural reactions.

How do you do a combination reaction?

1. Write the formulas of the reactants2. On the product side, write the charge as a

superscript. If a multivalent element is being used, use whatever charge you want.

3. Perform “Cross Products”4. Balance the equation.

Now for a more complex one! Don’t forget to balance the equation!

Na(s)+Cl2(g) 2NaCl(s)

HW: For this, you have to do solve it backwards. We give you a product and you tell us the reactants:

With CO as the only reactant, what are your reactants? Don’t forget to balance!
