Types of Student Accommodation 2016/2017

This document will inform you on the different types of student accommodation available. All rooms are fully furnished; you can find more information on the furnishing and inventory at the end of this document DUWO also has a general page for international VU students where you can find lots of information. With this document we will guide you in choosing the right accommodation for you. First, we give you some criteria to think about (page 1 & 2). Secondly, we will show you pictures of the rooms, the prices and, if available, a link to a video in which students show their room. BUDGET The price of accommodation varies between €320 and € 760. Utilities (water/ electricity/ internet) are included in the price. When you choose a room with a low rent, you will have to share your facilities (kitchen and/or bathroom). A flexible attitude is desirable when sharing a bathroom and/ or kitchen. SOCIAL In case you would like to meet many students, have dinners and/or drinks together, we advise you to choose for a room with a shared kitchen and/or bathroom. If you are more reserved and if it is important to you to be by yourself, we suggest to select a private, self-contained room. If you would like both we advise you to book a private room at Uilenstede since there are many students living here and it is a lively student community with many facilities. There is less social interaction between students at the other locations in Amsterdam (Krelis Louwensstraat, Eerste Ringdijkstraat or Pierre Lallelementstraat). FACILITIES As a student in the Netherlands, it is very common to have your own bedroom while sharing your facilities (kitchen and/or bathroom). We have a wide range of options available in terms of shared facilities. Below your can find a quick overview (when facilities are shared, the number in the figure below depicts the total number, including yourself):

MEET THE DUTCH If you would like to meet Dutch students, learn the Dutch language and make Dutch friends, we advise you to choose accommodation at Uilenstede 230 – 262 (blue tower). You will be sharing your facilities (not your bedroom) with international and Dutch students alike. Keep in mind that it will take some extra effort to make Dutch friends. You will also be able to meet Dutch students when you are living at Uilenstede due to the student village atmosphere.

LOCATION We have student accommodation available at different locations in Amsterdam. Although you might be dreaming of living in the city center with its canals and tall houses, you may wish to reconsider since it is

mostly wealthy Dutch people or tourists staying there. In contrast to the city center, Uilenstede is located in a very green area, in between two parks and close to the Amsterdam forest. Krelis Louwenstraat (West-side), Eerste Ringdijkstraat and Pierre Lallementstraat (East-side) are located in genuine Amsterdam areas; mixed population and close to a supermarket and public transport.

1. UILENSTEDE

Uilenstede can be described as a small student village in a big city. It is located in between Amsterdam and Amstelveen, and very close to Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. We have approximately 600 rooms available for our international students at Uilenstede.

The campus was built in the seventies. Although the buildings are renovated or are being renovated, you might feel the rooms are a bit outdated. However, there are many facilities available on campus to make your stay comfortable; think of a café, cultural center (including cinema), sport center, , small supermarket, copy shop and a pizza place. We have different types of accommodation available on the Uilenstede campus.

O DENNENRODEPAD @ SPINOZA-CAMPUS, UNFURNISHED (AVAILABLE FOR BACHELOR STUDENTS AND 2 YEAR MASTER STUDENTS)

We have a very very good offer for our Bachelor students and 2 year master students. Signing up for accommodation at VU is only for short stay housing, maximum of one academic year. But of course you need accommodation for a longer period! Therefore we offer you rooms at the Spinoza-campus with a Campus contract meaning you can live there for your entire degree, but also could terminate whenever you want with a one month notice. The rooms will be unfurnished, so you can decorate your room as you like. Ikea and other furnishing stores are close by or maybe you would like to bring stuff from home.

O RAVEL RESIDENCE – STUDENT EXPERIENCE, UNFURNISHED (AVAILABLE FOR BACHELOR STUDENTS AND 2 YEAR MASTER STUDENTS)

Another offer available as a Campus contract (accommodation during your degree) is the Ravel Residence. Right around the corner of Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, in the financial district of Amsterdam, you can find this new and modern complex of 800 student rooms. There are many services available such as: study rooms, a private dining rooms, urban gardening and a roof top basketball court. The rooms will be unfurnished. Also, this will be a campus contract, for your entire degree and after one year you can terminate your contract with a one month notice.
