M ELTING POT The melting pot is a metaphor for a heterogeneous
society becoming more homogeneousheterogeneous homogeneous The
different elements "melting together" into a harmonious whole with
a common culture. It is particularly used to describe the
assimilation of immigrants to the United States; the melting-
together metaphor was in use by the 1780s.assimilationUnited States
9
Slide 10
M ELTING POT CHALLENGED After 1970 the desirability of
assimilation and the melting pot model was challenged by proponents
of multiculturalismmulticulturalism They assert that cultural
differences within society are valuable and should be preserved,
proposing the alternative metaphor of the mosaic or salad bowl
different cultures mix, but remain distinct. mosaic salad bowl 10

Slide 11
C ULTURES IN THE US The United States of America thrives on
diversity. A synthesis of the worlds plentiful and varied races,
religions, and cultures America is a home to all, such that no one
group can call itself more American than another. The fusion of
cultures here is so unique and so exceptional that citizens can be
just as proud of their original cultural heritage as they are to be
an American. 11
Slide 12
C ULTURAL STRUGGLES Each culture provides its own special and
irreplaceable contribution to our understanding of America today.
Diversity in America not only presents a host of intimate snapshots
of culture and heritage, but we document the struggles of
nationalities to integrate into the melting pot or mosaic society
of America. 12
Slide 13
R ICH MIXTURES Without its rich mixture of religions, races,
and cultures, America would not be the nation that it is today.
Founded upon the basis of equality and freedom for all. America
acts as a stage where intensely different cultures not only aspire
to coexist peacefully, but also thrive symbiotically to create a
nation Learning about each other and our similarities and
differences helps us to understand each others struggles 13

F OR M Y M OTHER TO K NOW The reason why I go to school is to
make it. Its to know one day I will reach my hand out to receive my
diploma and know that my mother will be so proud of me. For my
mother to know that I will succeed in life and for me to know that
Im going places is important. This picture is not clear because Im
not quite there yet. Ebony

Slide 46
N O O NE C ARES This picture shows a young father holding his
son. He looks young. This young man experienced being alone himself
and has had a difficult life. His mother was on drugs and his
grandmother had to raise him. Hes spending time with him and he
loves him. He is taking care of his son. Having a child can get in
the way of your success in school if you are too young. But it can
also help you succeed: you will go further because you want your
child to have a better life than you did. This little boy probably
wont end up in the same situation as his dad. Jolisha
Slide 47
Slide 48
I T S ABOUT PASSION Team sports, in many ways, help you succeed
and to accomplish your goals. If I didnt have baseball, there would
be something missing. Every day before I go to school, even out of
season, I am thinking about baseball. I am thinking about plays,
about my coach, and about how to help another player when they are
having a bad day. Baseball is such a big part of my life and if I
didnt have it, every day at school would be gray. Some of my
teammates might even drop out of school without it. Baseball is
about passion; it gives you drive and the desire to succeed. You
rely on one another for support. If you dont have those things in
school, then you will not succeed.
Slide 49

Slide 50
C LOGGED This picture makes this student think of all the
struggles that get in the way of them succeeding. For example,
bi-polar disorder runs in this students family. This was a big
concern for them, but they were tested and know they dont have it,
but its always in the back of their mind. They had a schoolteacher
for sixth grade who blamed them when she lost her baby. How can you
tell a sixth grade student that its their fault for having a
miscarriage? The drain is clogged and that could be representative
of all the stuff that holds them down but the basketball is there
to remind me that I still need to get up and do what I need to do
in order to succeed. Alycia
