lOURS and excursion companiesare playing a big part in increasing the attendance at the SanDie go Exposition. Some ofthese companies are operating
transcontinental special trains with deluxe equipment and furnishing everycomfort that a traveler would have athome. One of these magnificent trainswas run from eastern cities under theauspices of the \,yorld's Fair Company.This company's schedule of specials willbring one of the trains into San Diegoevery ten days.

The San Diego Exposition has passedits fourth month with the best profitshown to date, and has broken all recordsin exposition history by paying expenseswith a good margin of profit so early inthe year. The success at the gates isattributed in great measure to the factthat the low railway rates from easternpoints went into effect on March 1 andimmediately released an enormous touring population that refused to travel inthe first two months of the year.
With the financial success of the fairnow assured, as the bulk of the easterntourist business is not yet under way, theexposition is planning numerous specialevents which were delayed in executionuntil the visiting crowds should warrantthe expenditure.
It is also contemplated to start the imposing pageants shortly. Detailed plans
for these were prepared months ago, butthe schedule was delayed until. spring.These are planned in connection with thespecial days set aside for the states.

A visitor from the back country, sauntering through the San Diego Expositiongrounds a few days ago, strolled to theFourth U. S. Marine camp, which is situated between the Cafion Cabrillo andCanon Espanol. Just as he steppedthrough a grove of palm trees a soldierdashed past him, hotly pursued by a scoreof half-naked Filipinos waving bolos andyelling with glee. A moment later therewas a volley of rifles and back came halfthe Filipinos with a battalion of marinesin chase.
The back country visitor didn't waitany longer. He dived through the palmtrees and would have kept going for amile had not a stalwart man who usedshocking language tripped him up andsat on him. When the rifle fire endedthe visitor was allowed to get up.
"You darned near ruined the best battle picture I ever got," said his captor."Can't you see that camera there?"
Examination showed a motion picturecompany (Lubin) at work on a Filipinodrama, in which had been enlisted thefull battalion of marines, together withthe cavalry and artillery from the government posts in San Diego. Even theFilipinos were marines, properly dressed-or undressed-and painted within an

inch of their lives. Within limits set bythe company director were gatheredseveral thousand persons watching the"battle."
This is the first film of the sort thathas been staged at the exposition. Manycomedies have been presented, and thepictorial news companies have made milesof film of the military and naval paradesand the visits of Vice-President Marshall,~ecretaries Lane and McAdoo, AdmiralsHoward, Uriu and Dewa and other distinguished visitors. Also there is a motion picture plant among the amusementsuf the Isthmus, where films are madedailv of the crowds on the Isthmus andvisitors also allowed to see the acting- ofdramas before the lens of the moviescamera.
Deda ring that the real cause of theEuropean war was the jealousy betweenthe belligerent nations for commercialsupremacy and expansion, Irvin Cobb,noted war correspondent, does not seeany end for the gigantic struggle untilone side is decisivelv beaten and its resources exhausted. .Cobb is a visitor atthe ~an Diego Exposition.
"I came here to drink in the beautiesof this great exposition," said Cobb, whois a daily visitor at the grounds. "As Istand here and look over this wide expanse of beauty and peacefulness, whata striking contrast it makes to what Ihave just seen on the European battle-
fields. There all is strife amI devastation. Here all is prosperity and happiness. Over on the other side they wantto fight it out."
Cobb declares he is taking a muchneeded rest, but plans to go back andresume his work in Europe in May.Cobb does not appear to have lost hishumorous vein even though he has beenassociated with an atmosphere conduciveto all things excepting comedy. Goodnature radiates from every inch of him.and the fact that he has never been accused of being a handsome man he considers quite a joke.

A late announcement from the NavvDepartment at \Vashington says therewill be seventy-nine warships and auxiliaries in the great fleet which is to sailfrom Hampton Roads through the Panama Canal and on to the San Diego Exposition in July. The fleet will includethree divisions of battleships.
Probably a score of fighting craft nowin Pacific waters and working out ofSan Diego as the southern base will jointhe armada down the coast. although itis possible some of these will be detached
for other duty in the east during the absence of the main fleet from the easternseaboard.
Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels has stated positively he will be withthe fleet, flying his flag from the battleship Oregon, on which he will remainuntil he reaches San Diego. Whetherhe will go on to San Francisco with thefleet or by rail is not stated. Other navydignitaries will join him.
President Wilson had hoped that hecould board the Oregon with the secretary, but, just as national problems prevented his going to the coast with VicePresident Marshall last month, so it isfeared he will be prevented from makingthe July trip. Aboard the battleshipsOhio, Illinois and Missouri will be the500 midshipmen from the Naval Academy. The plan was to start them fromAnnapolis in June, but these ships maybe held back to join the main fleet.
Forty congressmen are now on thecoast, bound for the Hawaiian Islands toinvestigate the needs of the insular pos~cssions. They are to return to \Vash-

ington by way of the San Diego Exposition in early summer. The formal inspection by members of the appropriations committee of the house took placelast month, and the agricultural demonstrations at the grounds elicited sharpinterest.

One of the new and typically Californian concessions opened on the Isthmusis the Forty-Nine Camp, which threwopen its log gates with an enthusiasticbang a few days ago and was jammeduntil early morning with curious easteners participating in the dancing. thegaming and other activities of the frontier display of early western life. Thecamp has its own "currency," which isgood at many other concessiol1Son thestreet, and has leaped into immediatepopularity with the tourists.

Among the souvenirs at the San DiegoExposition which attract the most attention are those turned out by the exhibitinstalled by the United States mint. Thecoil! machine turns out thousands ofsouvenir coins of the exposition, whilethe currency machine engraves an exposition emblem on silk. Both machinesare in operation daily; but the steadystream of visitors consumes the souvenirsas fast as they can be turned out.

It is an every-day occurrence for theprado and plazas of the San Diego Exposition to be filled with Indian warwhoops, for the Pueblo Indians who areon exhibit in the Indian Arts Building,working at their native crafts, and thetwo hundred tribesmen from the PaintedDesert on the Isthmus decline to stay ontheir reservation.
There was a new tone in warwhoopslast week, however, when to the southwest redmen were added a befeatheredallotment from the north. These werethe Indians from Buffalo Bill's Wild\Vest, playing for a couple of days inSan Diego, and seizing the opportunitybetween performances to visit the exposition, Colonel Cody went to the
grounds soon after he reached town andprophesied that his assortment of braveswould be out before the day was done.
The prophecy was correct. A fewminutes later a perturbed gate inspectortelephoned the administration building.
"Say," he yelled, "some Indians havejust arrived, and they aren't our Indians. They've got too much paint andfeathers."
"Let them in," he was told."You don't have to tell me," said the
gateman. "They're in. One of t~had a spear a mile long, and he dil'lfi'tlook friendly." I
Colonel Cody was an interested as wellas an interesting visitor. The west thathe knew best is the west of the buffaloplains, the northern section. He showeda willingness to know more about thepueblo section, and spent a long time inthe Painted Desert, where the exposition,through the Santa Fe, has gatheredrepresentatives of Hopi, Supai, Zuni,Apache, Navajo and other tribes, ma-iii,lyfrom Arizona and New Mexico. HisCalifornia speeches from the tanbark dealenthusiastically with the San Diego andSan Francisco fairs, and a great SanDiego banner is hung in the circus tent.

The combination of visitors at the SanDiego Exposition from all parts of thecountry and of battle practice by thePacific fleet off San Diego Bay hascaused so many reports of naval battlesthat the newspapers have found it advisable to give especial prominence tostories announcing that the Americanwarships were engaged in target practice. The rumble of big guns is hearddaily, and at times the salvos shake thewindows in the city. The San Diegan,knowing that the practice grounds of thefleet are off this port, pays little attention to the distant thundering; but th~
easterner immediately calls up pictures ofBritish and German warships in deathstruggles and is all for hiring a launchand going out to see what is happening,even at the risk of stopping a shell ortwo himself.

IIIII1IlLJlktJ races of redmen of the pastwill be reproduced throughout next yearby a large cast of actors, supported bymusicians, dancers and a chorus, at theSan Diego Exposition. None of theseceremonials has been held for severalcenturies, and a few of them are tracedback through five thousand years to aperiod where the mist of antiquity conceals all knowledge of the dead nations.
This is the awaited announcement ofthe exposition in the far southwest as toits program of special events. Therewill, of course, be the usual state daysand special events of that character, but
a statement of the more spectacular features had been delayed until all contracts should have been signed. Theceremonials, as reproduced after centuries of neglect, are based on carefulstudies made in scientific libraries duringthe last year and on research made bythe explorers whom the exposition, withthe Smithsonian Institute and the Schoolof American Archeology, sent into Central and South America two years ago.
"Only a few students have the faintestidea of the rich beauty of these old peoples' mythology," said H. O. Davis, director-general of the exposition, in commenting on the innovation. "The greatbody of readers, even readers above theaverage, know nothing of Quetzacoatlor H uitzilopochtli or the other brilliant

names in Aztec religion. Ignorance isjust as deep as it is about the extraordinary heights to which the Mayas soaredin affairs of art, heights quite as greatas attained by these redmen's contemporaries in Greece or Rome or Egypt.We know pitifully little about the engineering feats of the Incas, but I thinkwe will know more.
"One purpose of the San Diego Exposition is to present information aboutSouth America and Central Americaas well as about the American west.The Panama Canal, whose opening willbe celebrated both at San Francisco'sand San Diego's expositions, is boundto open up our western continent to theworld, commercially, industrially andeconomically. We want to help out, too,in the realm of more poetic things. Thedisplay of Indian arts, ancient and modern, at the Exposition Beautiful is themost complete thing of the sort everessayed. There was never anything comparable to it in scope, in interest, inscientific accuracy. It is being supplemented by this series of pageants-sixtythree are in our present list-quite as important in an educational way as in theway of entertainment. We have insistedon accuracy in costumes, in dance steps,in incidental music, in every detail. Wehave not succeeded in obtaining candidates for the roles of victims in thescenes of the sacrifice to Huitzilopochtli,however, and I hear the removal of thehearts and other neat little features ofthat sort will have to be omitted."
The pageants will start on the openingnight, New Year's Eve, and will be givenevery Saturday afternoon and eveningand at special midweek events. All willtake place in the great plaza, which isflanked by the old mission buildings, palaces and other Spanish structures, all covered with a riotous growth of vines andflowers and shrubbery, which make up the"Spanish city" on the mesa where theexposition is situated.

The heaviest movement of exhibitsthat has been noticed up to date startedwhen nearlv a solid trainload arrived inSan Diego In one haul. The bulk of theexhibits were for display in the buildings of the various states and valleys,erected along La Via de los Estados,on the lower plateau of the exposition
grounds. On the same day a steamerlanded in the Harbor of the Sun, carrying the forestry exhibit of the State ofWashington, collected by the universityof that state. An immense amount ofheavy agricultural machinery, for usein the outdoor demonstration work ofthe great farming display, also is on the.grounds.
The exhibits were fairly well installedby December 1, a full month in advanceof the opening date, leaving the entiremonth of December for the final improvement work. During this month thegrounds will be closed to the public inorder to facilitate the labors of the employes, now numbering close to twothousand men. Work on the main buildings is now complete, as it also is on thestate and county groups and on the structures along the Alameda. The Isthmus(the amusement street) is well advanced.with the entire frontage of five thousandfeet taken by concessionaires.

Two hundred "electriquettes" havebeen ordered, for delivery on ChristmasDay, one week before the opening. Thisdevice, propelled by a low-speed electricmotor, so simple of control that the tenyear-old daughter of one of the exposition officials operated it without previouspractice, will be the only vehicle allowedon the grounds. It cannot go morerapidly than three miles an hour on adown grade and can be stopped withinthree feet by an emergency brake operated by either of th~ two passengers itwill hold. This "baby electric" was devised to make unnecessary the laboriouspush-chair of previous world's fairs.

The cost of the Japanese exhibits atSan Diego Exposition is now estimatedby S. Watanabe, who is in completecharge, at $250,000. Some of the finestivories he has placed in a gigantic caseof carved cherry, with inlaid wood.which he values at $10,000. This standsin the center of the industrial display inthe Foreign and Domestic Arts Building. A more typical display is that ofthe Japanese pavilion and tea garden.placed in the rear of the botanical gardens, overlooking one of the canons.
The approach to the pavilion is overthe "Bridge of Long Life," spanning a

shallow pool about which is a densecopse of wistaria, hollywood and curious little Japanese trees and ferns withan occasional bright splash. of color.The paths to the canon are lined withfragrant flowers and the open pavilionitself is a mass of floral decoration.Some of the expert wood carvings ofJapan appear here as well.
The third of the Japanese exhibits isplaced on the Isthmus and takes theform of a concession, introducing quaintJapanese games and a small theater.Watanabe looks on this as the most important exhibit which the orient has sentto the occidental world.

Training of the two thousand pigeonswhich nest about the towers of the Plazade Panama, the main court at San Diego,has been begun in earnest, and a scoreor more of the birds are now so tamethat they alight on the shoulders andwrists of any casual visitor who looksas though he had grain or breadcrumhsready for distribution. Even the g-oldfish several thousand strong- in the Laguna de las Flores and the near-by lagunitas have learned to swarm about aniron piping which the trainer, Jose Miraflores, x:aps as a warning- that refreshments are coming-.
ON TO WASHINGTON
March I An army of 100,000 businessmen and another army of 100,000 railroad employes should march on to Washington and' demand fair play for therailroads from the Interstate CommerceCommission. President Willard of theBaltimore & Ohio Railroad has shownthat even if the 5 percent increase infreight rates were granted, this wouldnot give the railroads all that they require to meet additional burdens in taxes,wages and equipment. A 10 percent increase would be justified.
Yet the Interstate Commerce Commission acts as if to grant anything wouldbe a favor. No favors are asked. Therailroads are no longer permitted to manage their own affairs, make their rates orregulate their business. The governmentis doing all this and the public demandsthat it give to the railroads a squaredeal.
If the Interstate Commerce Commission persists in its folly it will precipi-
tate a panic that will bring the Americanpeople to their senses. The situation isbecoming critical. For over two yearsthe Interstate Commerce Commission hasbeen investigating the facts and its members are fully familiar with them. Twoof them, Messrs. Daniels and McChord,have already conceded the justice of therailroads' request. If the majority continues in its obdurate course, let President 'Wilson summarily exercise thepow'er of removal in the interests of thepublic welfare. This is no time fortrifling.-Leslie's.

BITH the arrival of heavy delegations which had delayed westerntravel until able to find both California expositions open, attendance at the San Diego Expositionhas picked up rapidly. On St.
Valentine's Day-the second day of the Chinese New Year's celebration-the attendancefigures brought .the total for a month and ahalf to over' 250,<XX>, a daily average of 5,500.

A ..consiqerable delegation from the SanDiego Exposition, including officials and directors, attended the opening of the PanamaPacific Exposition at San Francisco on February~. This was a return of the courtesyof the northern visitors who attended the SanDiego opening. Both expositions are exchanging special days at various times later in theyear.
The annual battleship practice of the Pacificfleet will take place off San Die~o during thenext three months, forming an Important addition to the list of special attractions offeredin the vicinity. The cruiser San Diego hasbeen in port, with nine of the torpedo boats ofthe west coast fleet, and from time to time allother vessels of the fleet will assemble. Theharbinger of the annual practice was the U.S. naval tug Iroquois, which steamed intoport after nine thousand miles of travelin ten weeks, exclusive of service at towingtargets for the maneuvers at Mare Island.The tug is to be used off San. Diego for hauling small ships, targets for the marksmen ofthe battleships at practice. San Diego and itsHarbor of the Sun constitute the naval rendezvous for the southwest coast. The sailorsand marines are almost constant attendantsat the exposition and participate in all parades, with the artillery, cavalry and infantry

regularly stationed in Balboa Park and in thevicinity of San Diego. The Mexican borderis eighteen miles to the south and anotherlarge camp is maintained near the line.

Thousands of dollars worth of gold ore hasbeen placed on display in the mineral exhibitin the New Mexico Building at the San DiegoExposition. The gold specimens which tookfirst prize at the Chicago World's Fair areincluded in the display. A number of the orescome from the Pinos Altos district of NewMexico, where, according to the New Mexico
Exposition Commission. the richest strikesince 1849 has been made. There are also inthe exhibit several large blocks of meerschaum from Magdalena, N. M., where thereis located the only commercially operatedmeerschaum deposit in America.

hundred men, bringing with them horses andequipment, will make the trip in a specialtrain. Company L has been in existence formore than half a century and is known as oneof the most aristocratic organizations of thekind in the world. The members are directdescendants of the founders of the company.

fornia and Mexico are planning to add to thecollection of exhibits at the San Diego Exposition a shark sucker, known far and wideamong sailors as the laziest and most goodfor-nothing fish in the seas, and generallyrecognized as a rare catch. This particularshark sucker was captured by fishermen onthe sloop Ask Me, which is in the harbor inSan Diego after a trip along the Mexicancoast. Besides being lazy and useless, theshark sucker is the prize tramp of die seven
seas. By means of a vacuum cap attached tothe back of his head he fastens himself to anymoving object and clings there for days andoften weeks at a time, calmly loafing alongwhile his unwilling carrier, if a fish cursespiscatorially to the aquatic heavens. The fishermen hope to display the Ask Me's catch atthe great aquarium on the exposition grounds.

of the U. S. S. San Diega, flagship of thePacific fleet, has been received at the SanDiego Exposition and placed in the navy department's exhibit. The model, which is constructed of wood and steel, is an exact replica of the powerful cruiser, even to havingthe tiny oars securely lashed to the miniaturelifeboats. Two other models of American warvessels also will be placed in the navy department's display.

battleships then in San Diego harbor, theFirst U. S. Cavalry, the Thirteenth Artillery, and the Fourth U. S. Marines,and probably the California NationalGuard. An imposing parade, probablylarger than the army and navy paradeof opening day, will precede the sportsprogram and lead directly to the marinebarracks in the exposition grounds.. The walls for the wall-scaling are ofcourse installed at the barracks already,and the daily drills include the rapid digging of trenches and the throwing up ofearth fortifications, while the field forthe track events has already been in usefor track work and the spring traininggames of the Chicago White Sox andother teams practicing at the exposition.There remain to be brought the sparsfrom the ships for the aboard-ship frolics of the sailors. in which the boxingmatches on the horizontal spars are always a feature.
Roman riding and "monkey drill" arefeatured by the cavalrymen. and novelexhibits by the guardsmen. The marineshave furnished some of the most spectacular features of the exposition since
the opening, their morning equipmentdrills at the barracks vying with the afternoon reviews in the Plaza de Panamain popularity. . Distinguished visitorsfrom foreign lands, such as AdmiralDewa and Admiral Uriu of Japan, aswell as prominent American officials,generally assist at the reviews.

Upward of a billion dollars rolled intothe San Diego Exposition grounds whenthe "Millionaire Special" arrived overthe Santa Fe, loaded with bankers andcommercial leaders from many sectionsof the country. It was the wealthiestsingle delegation that has appeared at thefair. Among the prominent memberswere George M. Reynolds, president ofthe Continental and Commercial NationalBank of Chicago and its two affiliatedstate banks; James A. Patten, the wheatand cotton magnate of Chicago; AugustBusch of 51. Louis; John N. WiIlys, theautomobile manufacturer; David May ofSt. Louis; Owen Aldis of Chicago andParis; Mrs. George M. Pullman of Chicago; John Cudahy of Kansas City:George B. Harris, chairman of the boardof the Burlington; W. C. Brown, formerpresident of the N. Y. c.; F. H. Green,former vice-president of the New YorkCentral Lines; J. T. The NewMexico Building and a few smallerstructures are also of concrete. ThePuente Cabrillo, the 1,000-foot viaductacross the main canon, is permanent. Allother buildings, of staff and plaster, areon metal lath, so that their life should beabout twenty years. The big agricultural display will be used at the close ofthe fair for experimental station work.

Uncle Sam's parcel post is now accused of competing with Dr. Stork sincethe arrival in San Diego of SamuelAbraham Randolph, aged eight years, by
parcel post. It all came about 111 thisway:
Samuel lives in Salt Lake City and desired to see the San Diego Exposition.His parents were unable to make thetrip, so they decided to send Samuel byparcel post to his grandmother, Mrs.Jolm Waterman, who resides in SanDiego. In the lapel of his coat Samuelwore two parcel post tags. One tag contained the address of his grandmothe.rand fifty cents in parcel post stamps.The other tag was marked, "Fragile;Handle With Care."
The boy's grandmother was at the station to claim her "mail," eliminating thenecessity of Samuel being tossed aboutin the local postoffice as ordinary parcelpost matter.
The largest single delegation that willvisit the San Diego Exposition this summer will be the Loyal Order of Moose,which will storm San Diego thirty thousand strong for a week's conventionbeginning on July 17. This conventionwill call there several governors, sena-

movie world. This is dainty Mary Pickford, who came to San Diego and theexposition with the Famous PlayersCompany to enact a screen thriller. Big crowds followed MissPickford through the exposition grounds,while the most ardent of the movie fanspressed forward to shake hands withher. otherwise distinguished in western history-set aside 1,400 acres, where newSan Diego now stands, for park purposes.III this great park is now the PanamaCali fornia Exposition. On the fortyseventh anniversary there was escortedinto the grounds Juan Guadaloupe Estmlillo, the only surviving member ofthe old board.

known landmark to thousands of railroadmen and tourists-bit the dust whentwo yard engines to which was attacheda wire cable pulled the wire through thebase of the tower and brought it downwith a crash.
Immediately after the tower waswrecked the ground was cleared and additional sidetracks were installed to takecare of the ever-increasing expositionbusiness. The big palms which formerlygraced the depot platform have beenmoved to new locations adjoining thenew passenger station. These trees weremoved through deep, wide cuts, andabout forty-five tons of earth was movedwith each palm. The earth about theroots was boxed tightly to permit of thewhole being glided along the cut. Whilemoving the palms in this manner involveda great deal of work, it would have beenimpracticable to hoist them with a cranewithout badly damaging them.

tainment of distinguished visitors to theSan Diego Exposition is O. ]. Stough,San Diego's ninety-seven-year-old youngman. Probably no person in San Diegotakes more delight in entertaining visitorsthan does Mr. Stough, a retired capitalist. He has appointed himself a committee of one on entertainment. Eachmorning he makes a round of the leadinghotels in his automobile, becomes acquainted with visitors and either takesthem to the exposition or places his carat their disposal. When the New :Vlexico Building was dedicated this youthfulnonogenarian was a loyal New Mexican.\Vhen Missouri Day was celebrated he

sive scientific display at the San DiegoExposition have been placed in the lastfew days, in the form of thirty wallcharts prepared by the United StatesNational Museum to supplement the bigcollection of anthropological studies' inthe Science of Man Building.
With the placing of these charts therehas been issued a pamphlet written byUr. Ales Hrdlicka of the IllllSCllm, oneof the foremost anthropologists of theworld, under whose personal supervisionwere collected and arranged the specimcns from all parts of the universe, lIekatures the display as the most completein existcnce and calls attention to thefact that many of the most importantfeatures have never before been presented, even in part. The expeditionssent out by the exposition and the museum for the specime:ls touched everycontinent.
Particular attention is directed to thisdisplay as the most important single fea-

ture 'for the exposition summer schoolwhich opened on July 5 for a six weekssession, in which educators from manyparts of the country are enrolled as students. The faculty is made up of specialists in many fields or education, andthe courses consist largely of lecturesbased on the exhibits of a scientific nature. There are enlisted also the laborsof the India'ns, used to demonstrate theexisting arts and crafts of the redmenof the Southwest, supplementing the display of old-time arts and crafts as practiced by Incas, Mayas, Aztecs and Toltees, long before the coming of the whitemen.
Side by side in the room devoted tothe history of the yellow-brown races,in which Dr. Hrdlicka classifies theIndian, are panels of the Sioux typeof native found in southern Siberia.Stripped of their characteristic ornaments, the figures are identical. Thejuxtaposition cal1s attention to the probable oriental origin of the AmericanIndian.

Commission and the Daughters of theMonnon Battalion, in the arrangementof plans for the celebration on July 17of Utah Day.
From this data it appears that theMormon Battalion of five hundred menwho tramped overland from Fort Leavenworth to San Diego in 1846-1847 forparticipation in the Mexican War andendured terrifying hardships in the desert remained in San Diego severalmonths. It is said that they built thefirst courthouse, the first schoolhouse.the first cement paving, dug the firstsanitary wells and, in other ways, soaroused the admiration of the Spanishtownspeople that, when the regiment wasmustered out, there was a request thatit remain at San Diego. Part of thebattalion went on to Utah by way of theSacramento Valley and is said to haveuncovered the first gold at Sutter Creek.
In these and other ways the battalioncontributed importantly to western development. I t is worth mentioning thattheir inspiration for irrigation work wasaroused by examination of the famousirrigation project at the old mission of
San Diego de Alcala, built shortly afterthe arrival of the padres in 1769-thefirst project of this sort in the countryand still being capable of operation. TheMormons did a good deal of work in thisline in San Diego and on their arrivalin Utah simply transplanted the idea,thus developing many thousands of acresin that new territory which, without irrigation, would have remained quite hopeless for agriculture.

It is a great roomyplace filled with beauti ful paintings,t:owers, cozy corners and tempting restrooms. In the court, or patio, are hundreds of singing birds, while beautifulclimbing rose bushes and Aowers of manyother descriptions beauti fy the spot andfairly enchant the tourist. About half amilc' frolll the hotel lies the great Cora·nado Tent City, wherein accommodationsfor thousands are afforded in spacious,
cleanly tents and individual cottages,with their comfortable equipment. Thesurf at Coronado is the most famous onthe coast, while polo, golf, tennis, boating, bay and surf bathing are providedfor the guests at thc big hotels, whereone may live in luxury at very moderaterates. For a nominal fare the ferry maybe taken across to the mainland and thecity and exposition visited. In the evening the cool return trip is very restfuland assures one spending a pleasant cvening at the hotel or on the bcach, and.when night comes on, thc breeze fromthe Pacific makes necessary a blanket inorder to have comfortable repose.

IIITH heavy attendance and liberal spending of money theSan Diego Exposition wasable at the end of July to havea big balance on the profit side
of the ledger. Including July 1,264,561people visited the exposition, and sincethen the crowds have been coming thickerthan ever.
July's average daily attendance was9,707-a much higher daily averagethan any previous month. The total forJuly exceeds that recorded in January,the previous high month, by just 120,710.This excess is almost equal to the totalattendance of February. The attendanceby months since the opening is as follows: January, 180,270; February, 133,168; March, 153,042; April, 151,148;l\lay, 179,818; June, 166,135; July,300,980.
While the month was featured by several special events which drew largecrowds, the attendance for the days immediately following the celebration dayswas heavy, thus indicating to expositionofficials that there was an influx of visitors continuing. The exposition information bureau has just compiled statistics which show that visitors are remaining longer in San Diego than they didduring the first months of the exposition.The average visit of early sightseers was
two days, but in June and July the average visit was lengthened to four days.

This, the second battalion, FourthRegiment United States Marine Corps,under command of Colonel Pendleton,had been taken to Mexican waters andthere held in readiness for weeks to persuade the Yaqui Indians to cease molestation of Americans if necessary. It wasnot necessary. The Yaqui chiefs haddeclared war on Germany, Ireland, theUnited States and about all the other
thing like 300,000 miles. Although thespeed of these cars would prohibit theiruse in an elopement they are such a novelty that their popularity continues to increase. The speed, which is limited totwo and one-half miles an hour "underfavorable conditions," urges many burlesque races between visitors.

This fellow estimates that at theclose of the exposition the little sightseeing cars will have saved visitors some-

The strangest part about his visitis that he arrived in an automobile,which he had driven from Schenectady,N. Y. He is Albert Stevens, and, whenhe pulled his machine up in front of theCalifornia Building to receive the congratulations of President Davidson, thespeedometer read 5,100 miles. On therun across the country Stevens was accompanied by his wife, and many sidetrips were made.

The Panama Canal, its history andbuilding were the topics of an addressdelivered by Major-General Goethals toan immense crowd gathered at the greatoutdoor organ pavilion on the expositiongrounds.
A special talk on the canal also wasgranted the school children of the cityduring the afternoon, the canal builderaddressing them from the top of Gatunlock in the mammoth reproduction of thecanal 011 the exposition Isthmus, thePanama Canal Extravaganza. The concession admitted school children freeduring the afternoon.
The exposition, in its effort to makethe day one of educational advantage to
the school children, opened its gates tothem free of charge during the day.
* * *Motion Picture Day, with a dozen or
more playing companies enacting asmany varieties of comedies and seriousdramas about the grounds, drew an immense crowd and kept it highly amused.Hundreds of non-participating playersfrom studios in Los Angeles and vicinityand San Diego, managers, directors andpublicity men looked on.
A feature of the day's activity was thecrowning of Francis X. Bushman andBeverly Bayne, of the Metro-Qualityfilm, king and queen of Movie Day, President Davidson of the exposition performing the ceremony in a scene of regalsetting. The king and queen entered thegrounds in a motor car at the head of along parade of machines bearing stars offilmdom. Bushman and Miss Baynewere elected by popular ballot throughout southern California.
The movie stars were tendered anelaborate banquet in the evening, andthis was followed by a grand open airball on the Plaza de Panama, King Francis and Queen Beverly leading the grand

the San Diego Exposition in large numbers during the last half of October andearly November, according to officials ofthe Santa Fe, who are arranging to bringthem out in special trains. Three of
the trains already are provided for, thefirst to leave Chicago on October 14.
The farmers from the interior willfind much of great interest at the SanDiego Exposition, which was designedespecially to further agriculture in theSouthwest and presents an eloquently silent demonstration of the possibilities inthis section of the country by exhibits ofgrowing orchards and gardens and theplanting of the grounds, all of whichhave been brought to perfection in theshort space of three years.

ama Canal, are of interest to railwaymen in several ways. The opening of thecanal was itself a great transportation e\·ent.The expositions have stimulated travel to California and the \Vest in g-eneral in such proportions as to require a great deal of preparation for it on the part of the western railways,and during the past few weeks to such anextent as to tax the facilities of the linesservinR the PacifiC coast.
It is believed that the expositions have introduced large numbers of eastern people tothe attractions and opportunities of the far\Vest in such a way as to have a permanenteffect both in the way of stimulating futuretravel and in attracting settlers. Moreover,the railways themselves have taken an activepart in the effort to make the expositions asuccess, spending large sums in advertisingthem and making low rates, and the transportation exhibits at the San Francisco Exposition,of the railways and of the railway supply companies, are among the most interesting features.
The Panama-Pacific International Expositionwas opened on February 20 and will close onDecember 4, while the Panama-California Exposition at San Diego was opened on January1. and is to remain open throug-h the calenrlaryear.
RATES AND ROUTES
On account of the expositions the railroadsearly announced round-trip rates to Californiaon a basis lower than has been made for summer travel to the coast for several years; $50frnm the "issnuri T{;ver. $()2.50 from Chicagoand from $94.30 to $9S.g0 from New York, thelower rate applying via the differential lines.
These rates were made effective from l\IarchI to November 3D, with a final return limit ofthree months from date of sale, but not laterthan December 31. Liberal stopovers have beenallowed on both going and return trips andmany free side trips were offered, so that considering the total mileage thus made possiblethe rates offered have probably been the mostliberal ever offered for travel to the Pacificcoast. The rates were made availahle by a
great variety of routes, and, with an additionalfare of $17.50 via Portland, Tacoma or Seattle,almost any combination of routes, includingsteamship lines along the Pacific coast. couldbe selected. Several of the roads publishedhooklets outlining forty or more routes whichwere available from the Middle West.
Tickets via most of these routes includedthe round trip from Los Angeles to San Diegoand return and free side trips were offered toDenver, Colorado Springs or Pueblo, Salt LakeCity, Seattle and Tacoma, and many otherpoints from the routes which do not reachthem directly. Low rates also were made forside trips to many other points of interest.With the free side trips added, the $62.50 ratefrom Chicago covers from 5,000 to 5,400 milesand the $80 rate. well over 6,00J miles, makingthe rates per mile approximately 1.25 cents, andhy some routes as low as 1.12 cents.
PREPARATIOXS MADE BY RAILWAYS
The railways have been preparing for handling the exposition business for two or threeyears. The first preparations consisted mainlyof arrangements for adequately advertising theevent, and a vast amount of literature has beenprepared by the railway advertising- departments on the expositions anrl the points ofinterest to which the special exposition rateswould naturally attract many visitors.
The Santa Fe System also built a new passenger station in San Diego, and the SouthernPacific built new stations at Los Ang-e1es amiat Third and Townsend strel'ts in San Francisco. partly to accommodate the increaserltravel expected this year.
Several 0 f the transcontinental roads puton new trains in anticipation of the expositiontravel. The Santa Fe on February 7 put intoservice ;i new traill called "The Missionary"from Chicago to Los Angeles and San Francisco, and also a new train between ~ew Orleans and Californ:a. On April 12 a new traincalled the "Scenic Limited" was put into service betwen St. Louis and San Francisco by theMissouri Pacific, Denver & Rio Grande and\Vestern Pacific. New service also was established on May 30, June 19 and June 20 by theChicago & North \Vestern, Chicago, Milwaukee& St. Paul. Chicago, Burlington & Quincy, Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific and \\iabash inconnection with the Union Pacific and other

western lines, the Union Pacific putting onthree additional trains in each direction.
ATTENDANCE AND PASSENGERS CARRIED
With the San Francisco exposition periodonly partly over it is, of course, impossible atthis time to gage accurately its success as compared with other expositions as measured byattendance or the number of passengers carried by the railways, but some figures areavailable covering July and a part of August.
On August 20, after the San Francisco exposition had been open for six months, thetotal attendance as given out by the expositionofficials was 10,813,153, an average of nearly60,000 a day. On September 4 it was reported that theattendance had passed the 12,000,000 mark.About one-third of the attendance has beenfree, including employes, exhibitors, press representatives, etc. The attendance at first wasvery large and during the first few days, afterthe special rates went into effect, the travelfrom the East was very heavy. The attendanceduring the opening week was 519.599, but afterthe first month both the attendance and thepassenger traffic from the East were considerably reduced until the vacation season, towardthe end of June, when both the attendanceand the number of passengers from the Eastbegan to increase rapidly. From July lon, theattendance increased at an average rate ofabout 10,000 a day for a time, and the increasecontinued through August. The highest recorded attendance for a week was 559936, forthe week ending August 8, which exceeded thatof the opening week by about 40,000.
The attendance at the San Diego expositionfor the first six months was 1,265,718.
During the first days after the special rateswent into effect most of the roads out of Chicago ran their trains with extra cars or in several sections, and during the vacation periodsome trains were run with extra sections every<lay. Practically all of the lines participating inthe transcontinental business have shown aconsiderably increased travel, but for a time,between the first rush and the heavy summertravel, business was so light that many of theroads were greatly disappointed with the results. Considering the entire season to date,while the California terminal lines, which areall fed by a number of intermediate lines, haveenjoyed an unusually large traffic, the moreeasterly lines that have had to divide the business to a greater extent have not fared so welland many have reported that business has notbeen up to their expectations.
No statistics are available showing the totalnumber of passengers carried to the expositions by the railways, but the number handledon the special rate round-trip through ticketsfrom the East is indicated by the fact that218,000 of these tickets from points east of theRocky Mountains had been \'alirlated at San
Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego and otherpoints on the coast up to August 25. As theheaviest travel was during the months of Julyand August, a large number of eastern peoplfwere in the West at that time who had not yethad their tickets validated for the return trip.
CALIFORNIA TERMINAL LINES
The lines to San Francisco, which have handled all the through passengers to the exposition in that city, except those carried by thesteamship lines, are the Santa Fe, the SouthernPacific and the Western Pacific.
The Santa Fe, which is the only singlethrough line from Chicago to California. andwhich also reaches both San Francisco andLos Angeles, as well as being the only line toSan Diego, participated to an unusualt~· largeextent in the exposition travel. On March Ithe California Limited was run in eight sections. During July the passenger businesswest of Albuquerqtle showed an increase of 40percent, and 54 special trains were handledwestbound and 43 eastbound.
The Grand Canon on this line was also anadded attraction, and during July and Augustthree trains a week were run directly to thecanon in each direction. On some days asmany as 1.500 people visited the canon. theaverage for July being 575 a day, requiring theinstallation of temporary facilities. such astents and parking cars. During the first monthsafter the opening of the exposition the travelwas of course largely westbound and equipment was moved east empty, but since Junethe business has been welt balanced, althoughit has been Jlecessary to deadhead equipment inboth directions in order to maintain the standards for certain trains. During the first twoweeks in July the Santa Fe handled more pullman equipment in Los Angeles than was handled in New York City by both the Pennsylvania and New York Central lines.
The heavy travel also made the problem ofserving meals an important one, and duringrecent weeks the experiment has been tried ofstopping the limited trains at eating-houses inaddition to carrying dining-cars.
As the Santa Fe has the only rail line intoSan Diego, it enjoyed an unusually profitablebusiness between that city and Los Angeles.;o.J' early all the round-trip tickets from the Eastto California included a coupon for the tripfrom Los Angeles to San Diego without extracharge and a large percentage of the touriststook advantage of the opportunity. Figuresshowing the number of passengers handled bythe Santa Fe on this line were not available.but the total attendance from January 1 toJuly 1 was 1,265.718. With six regular schedpled trains in each direction many trains wererun with extra sections, and as a large percentage of the travel was on day trains thiswas an unusually profitable business, capableof being handled in an economical way. Withday coaches it was possible to seat ffi passengers in a car, as compared with almost 24 in apullman, and it was also possible to accommodate the number of cars in a train to the number of people who wanted to go on that trainso that the trains were just comfortably fitled.
The Southern Pacific, with its Shasta routefrom the north. the Ogrlen route from the east,

and the Sunset route from the south, connecting with the various lines running from theMiddle West, naturally has handled the bulkof the passengers into and out of San Francisco, and has probably handled a very largepercentage of all of the through passengersover at least a part of its lines. This road,therefore, showed the remarkable increase ofJ<X) percent in its transcontinental passengerbusiness for the. month of July as comparedwith July, 1914. From February 20, the dateof the opening of the exposition, until July 31,the Southern Pacific received from or delivered to its eastern connections a total of 280,095 passengers traveling on the special exposition excursion tickets, of which 120.777 werehandled in the month of July, and 75.083 during the last two weeks of July. During thesame period a total of 212,100 passengers to
passengers between Los Angeles and Salt Lake,including 16,966 received from connections,westbound. This road has three regularthrough trains in each direction a day, whichwere run in sections several times a weekduring July and August, and up to AugustIS had handled 112 special trains and sectionsfor organized parties. At the beginning ofthe season this company took over all theeating-houses on its line in order to makesure of good service and turned over theiroperation to the dining-car department. Onthe Pacific Limited train the plan was triedof serving an attractive 50-cent club luncheonin the dining-car, which proved very popularand increased the dining-car receipts. the exposition were handled on local tickets,the heaviest movement also being for July,with a total of 64,354. Up to August 16 theSouthern Pacific had handled 117 special trainsaveraging at least 125 passengers each, and 190special car parties.
Officers of the Western Pacific estimated thatthis line had handled over 400 through passeng-ers a day into San Francisco during June,July and August, and a slightly larger numberin the reverse direction, in connection with theGould lines and other connections east of SaltLake City. July showed the largest passengerbusiness in the history of the company, and,as the local passenger traffic is comparativelysmall, the increase is attributable to the exposition travel. In addition to three regulartrains each way a day. filled to capacity andwith frequent extra sections both eastboundand westbound, the Western Pacific handledabout one special train a day on the averagein each direction.
The San Pedro, Los Angeles & Salt Lakealso experienced an unusually large increase inpassenger traffic on account of the expositions.During July this road handled 35,707 through

Low rate excursion rates also were madeduring the summer for local travel betweenLos Angeles and San Francisco and betweenLos Angeles and San Diego. To San Diegorates as low as $4 and $5 for the round tripwere made for special occasions, for a distanceof 250 miles, while tickets good for threemonths were sold for $6.25. Between SanFrancisco and Los Angeles a round-trip rateof $18.75 was made on certaiu days, while arate of $22.50 was effective every day.
The westbound exposition traffic was balanced to some extent by the "back east" excursion rates-$72.50 to Chicago and return,$110 70 to New York and return, and $tO tothe Missouri River and return.
