The Jury was composed of Pietro Belluschi, Elizabeth Gordon, Thomas Creighton, George M. Martin, and James T. Lendrum. All are architects except Miss Gordon, who is editor of a home magazine, and Mr. Creighton, who is editor of an architectural magazine. Solution in Planning. The Sausalito (Calif.) house, built on a steep hillside, was se- lected because of “its very direct solution of a planning problem,” the jury said. “The use of extended decks gives an illusion of much more space than is actually enclosed. The various floor levels seem to work together very successfully. As far as It was possible to Judge from the photographs submitted, the house is designed with great skill.” Regarding the Massachusetts house, the jury had this to say: "The Massachusetts house was liked particularly for its internal plan arrangement, although the jury questioned the lack of ac- cessibility to the kitchen. Site planning seemed good, with the possible exception of a window wall to a lot line. "The overall design was thought to be most elegant and skillful. There was some question of the wisdom of the clerestory ventila- tion and lighting of the interior bathroom.” The Florida houses was lauded by the jury as an excellent plan solution for the climate involved, orientation, natural ventilation, the use of overhangs—all of which, the jury said, were care- fully considered. “In plan the house was ad- s ! j3820 INGOMAR ST. "The general problem was to try to arrive at a scheme, or direc- tion, that would prove that the small house can be built within, or under, the cost limits already dictated by the investment tract builders; and yet give the buyer something that permits the type of living so much discussed by architects today. “The objective was to make all this possible and still receive the blessings of the FHA. This par- ticular house has been approved by the San Diego office of the Federal Housing Administration. It is being sold for $8,750 on any lot in San Diego County and in- cludes architect’s fees, contrac- tor’s fees, sales force fee, sewer connection up to $100, cork floor in kitchen and bath, 2 built-in drawer units in the wardrobes, a portion of the garden fences, ga- rage, fireplace (may be eliminated and save $200.) colored bath fix- tures may be eliminated and save approximately 15 per cent of fix- ture cost), dishwasher, optional sliding glass closure for kitchen from dining area, and garbage disposal. On a lot evaluated at $1,750.06. FHA has made a com- mitment of $8,450.06. Many Built-in Features. “Eliminating fees, the house can be built for under $8,500. This house was designed to permit the owner to move in with the abso- lute minimum of additional furni- ture. Every room in the house opens onto its own private garden with screening garden fences to give total privacy from the neighbors. The design considered the neces- sity of adapting the house to any 1 lot of 50 feet by 100 feet or larger. “The screening fences eliminate necessity of draperies, which al- j ways is a considerable item in furnishing a house. The expan- sion of all rooms to the limits of the fences permits of maximum : property use without the usual large wasted area, good for neither the property owner nor the neigh- borhood, other than a mainte- nance problem. “The house consists of four large rigid ribs running in the longest direction of the simple rectangular form, then covered by 2 inches by 6 inches tongue and groove Douglajs fir roofing, which is stained and left exposed. The remainder is a skin closure of non-structural redwood, water- proof plywood, and glass. “The exterior walls are approxi- mately 75 per cent glass. The heating system consists of one 55,000 BTU gas-fired unit. The floors throughout are concrete. “All rooms have windows high and next to the ceiling, insuring the best possible ventilation, tak- ing oil the hot and stagnant air. The plan also permits the instal- lation of evaporative coolers in areas of hot and dry climates. If so desired, the concrete floors per- mit of a radiant heating system. | “Alternate plans of one, two, and three-bedroom houses have been developed. “The whole study has con- clusively proved that a good con- temporary house can be built to meet any competitive market, that the heretofore investment builder's attitude toward the so- called prohibitive “architect's fee” does not exist and really is well- spent money on an investment project, and that the buying pub- lic not only is receptive but searching for the chance to elim- inate the necessity of buying small double-hung windows, shutters, false chimneys, poorly ventilated rooms, view through a maze of muntin bars, "picture windows”1 that put the family on display, and kitchens as far removed from use as is possible. “So far 18 of the houses have been built.
