(This is one of a series of reports presenting final population figures for selected areas in each State. In this series, reports are num~ered alphabetically by States. Additional reports will be issued as final figures for other States become available).
The total population of New York on April 1, 1950, was 14,830,192, according to final figures for the State released today by Roy V. Peel, Director, Bureau or the Census, Department of Commerce.·. During the previous 10 years, the population of the State increased by 1,351,050, or 10.0 percent, over the 13,479,142 inhabitants enu.lnerated in 1940. .Among the States, New York ranked first in population. The 1950 population was more than 43 times as large as the population in 1790, when New York was en~erated in the first Federal census.
In 1950, according to the new urban definition, New York had an urban population of 12,682,446 and a rural.population of 2,147,746. The urban population comprised 85.5 percent of the total population of the State.
Between 1940 and 1950, all but 3 of the 62 counties in New York increased in po1mlation. One-fifth of the population gain for the State was accounted for by Nassau County, which led in both the amount and rate of increase :with a gain of 266, 017, or 65. 4 percent. The gain of 436,962 for the five counties constituting New York City (Bronx, Kings, New York, ~ueens, and Richmond) represented one-third of the population gain for the State. The counties in New York ranged in size from Hamilton with a population of 4,105 to Kings with a population of 2, 738,175·.
New York had a total of .611 incorporated places and 69 unincorporated places of 1,000 inhabitants or more. or the 12,258,947 persons living in the incorporated places, 404,356 were living in the 399 places of fewer than 2,500 inhabitants. Of the 166,442 persons. living in the unincorporated places, 71,995 were living in the

51 places of 1,000 to 2,500 inhabitants. The incorporated places ranged in ~ize from Dering Harbor village with a population of 4' to New York City, which had a population of 7,891,957, or more than one-half of the population of the State.
Under the urban definition established for use in the 1950 Census, the urban population comprises all persons living in (a) places of 2,500 inhabitants or more incorporated as cities, boroughs, towns, 1 and villages; (b) the densely settled urban fringe, including both incorporated and unincorporated areas, around cities of 50,000 or more; and (c) unincorporated places of 2,500 inhabitants or more outside any urban
, fringe. The r'emaining population is classified as rDI'al. According to the urban definition used in previous censuses, the urban population comprised. all persons living in incorporated places of 2,500 inhabitants or more and areas (usually minor civil divisions) classified as urban under special rules .relating to population
·Size and density.
In both definitions, the most important ~
component of the urban territory is the group of incorporated places having 2,500 inhabitants or more. A definition of urban territory restricted to such places, however, would exclude a number of e~ually large and densely settled places, merely because they were not incorporated places. Under the old definition, an effort was made to avoid some of the more obviqus omissions by the inclusion of the places urban under special rules. Even with these rules,

however, many large and closely built-up places were excluded from the urban territory. To improve the situation in the 1950 Census, th~
Bureau of the Census set up, in advance of enumeration, boundaries for urban-fringe areas around cities of 50,000 or more and·for unincorporated places outside urban fringes. All the population residing in urban-fringe areas and in unincorporated places of 2,500 or more is classified as urban according to the 1950 definition. (Of course~ the incorporated places of 2,500 or :nore are urban in their own right.) Consequently, the special rules of the old definition are no longer uecessary.
According to the new urban definition, the 1950 urban population of New York included the following components: (1) The 11,854,591 inhabitants of the 212 incorporated places of 2 1 500 or more; (2) the 94,44? inhabitants of the 18
specially d.elineated unincorporated places of 2,500 or more; and (3) the 733,408 persons living in ot.her territory il'.',, the urban-fringe areas of Albany-Troy, Bingha.~ton, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Rochester, Schenectady, Syracuse, and Utfoa and the New York part of the urban fringe of New York-Northeastern New Jersey. According to the old definition, New York had 0ne place-Irondequoit town--urban under special rule. The first element and the 34,417 persons living in Irondequ0it town comprised the urban population under the old definition. Of the persons living in Irondequoit town, 29,692 were classified as urban according to the new definition because they were living in the urban fringe of Rochester. The remaining 4,725 persons were classified as living in rural territory. The net gain in the urban population of New York resultipg from the•change in definition, therefore, was 793,438.
