Tributes

The Art for Pleasure Class has sadly lost two of their class members this year.

MEIRWEN WHEWELL our favourite nonagenarian died suddenly earlier in the year. Living near the Box

Factory for over 30 years Meirwen had a long history with it as her Community Centre before joining our class. Always charming, she would arrive at the door dressed to impress and work quietly at her endeavours but with an ear to conversations. ‘You Tube,’ she’d say, ‘yes I watch it every day!’ Always full of surprises Meirwen would relate how far she had walked that week to the RAH for appointments with her walking frame. ‘I only need it for balance as my blood pressure is low!’ She could keep up with anyone. Meirwen had come to Australia from her beloved Wales with a young family and shared that background with several class members so we often had banter about Welsh traditions and history.

A hushed class learned this week that DON GERMEIN died on Wednesday 30th October following heart

surgery. He was talented at drawing and portraiture and many times we watched him draw free hand – animals, people and many other scenes. We encourage the use of different mediums and Don was always the first to try. He joined in class conversations especially the movie topics – and as the ladies preferred biographies and historic sagas Don would always echo, ‘what about Rambo?’

Class celebrations were popular with both of them and to our delight, at one, Meirwen gave us a talk on aging successfully. Don was very fond of Meirwen and like her was involved in many different community activities. They both had a lot of living to do. After her death he commenced a portrait of her to give to her family. Both families have assured us how much they loved the class and its members.

We will always remember Meirwen and Don. Leonie Pike and John Griffiths : Class Tutors

DON FENTON – long-time Tutor – passed away in September For over 20 years Don regularly presented courses at U3A Adelaide. Don was made a Life Member in 2011 – he will be missed. Our records show a selection of his subjects included Power in the Renaissance Period, Power in the Medieval World, Political Ideologies and the History of Political Power Series.
