From the Vice-Chairman

Back in June, and what a long way off that seems now, we recognised in absentia a former Vice-Chairman whose whereabouts we could not discover in time for the AGM. I am delighted to report that Margaret Tuffin, for she it was, has been found – three doors away from me, as it happens! As of yore, nowadays we live in a world of forenames only, so I was unaware that this busy lady - good friend to my elderly cat, whom she allowed to spend his last weeks sunning himself in his favourite spot by her fishpond – was practically on my doorstep. Thus I was doubly happy to make the presentation, albeit somewhat informally, to Margaret with our thanks. Also seemingly far off though hastening on apace is the 10th Anniversary tea at Wicksteeds. Details elsewhere in this publication. Ticket sales are progressing, so make sure you secure yours with all convenient speed. I wish I could report that a volunteer has come forward for the Committee as we are still a wo/man short and yourselves under-represented. There must be someone out there valiant enough, however new or long-standing a member, so step forward, special person! Don’t be shy. (Stop Press! Many thanks to Brenda Boyles for volunteering to join our select and vital band of "Welcomers". Excellent news.) I hear that owing to my dodgy back I missed a treat last month as the speaker was excellent, and we are in hopes of a return visit in the not-too-distant. This month it is our Chairman who is absent, off on his hols in celebration, I gather, of a Big Birthday. Happy ??th, Cyril.

To All Group Leaders From the Committee Please check that any member of your group is actually a member of the U3A. This is important because of insurance implications.

Group Leaders know the Post Code of your venue. The emergency services will ask for it in order to despatch an ambulance without delay.

Group Coordinator Message Following on from last month another visit to the Friday Pop-In and it was again very nice to meet different people. Sue needs 10 people to be able to rent a small room at Toller and of course it would be fun if more people came. It would be a good stop off before or after shopping and would certainly lift your spirits as a general feeling of goodwill expires. In a previous newsletter I did ask for invitations to visit your groups and would very much like to visit so please advise me if/when you would welcome a visit from me. In the meantime any help or advice I can give please call me on 01832 732 361. Maureen Curd.

Web Master If you wish me to put additional information and/or photographs relating to your Groups on the Kettering U3A Website, please let me have this either via email to [email protected] or by letting me have hardcopy. It would also be useful if I could have your permission to quote your email address. There is not only a list of Groups on the Website, but each Group also has its own page for the purpose of displaying both information and photographs. At present I have been able to include photographs for some Groups, which is due to the efforts of their Group Leaders. Freda Smith - Kettering U3A Web Master

Visits and Events As many of you are aware a NON REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT is required for you put your name down on any of the arranged trips. Theatre tickets are payable in advance as theatres will only hold a group booking for a limited period. Should you wish to cancel after you have confirmed a booking it is your responsibility to find a person willing to take your place and reimburse you accordingly. In some instances, if we have a waiting list for example, we will put you in touch with someone who has shown an interest.

ALL COACH FARES ARE SUBJECT TO NUMBERS In many instances we are unaware of final numbers so we cannot confirm the cost of the coach until this is ascertained. We now include a gratuity amount in the costing to include coach drivers and where applicable site guides. If we need to cancel through lack of support then those who have paid will get a full refund. Cheques should be made payable to U3A Kettering No. 2 A/C Thank you for your forbearance in this matter. Maureen.

Trips & Visits Coach only day trip to London Saturday 19th October 2013. £13.00 per person We filled our quota of seats but I believe Eileen Mason has started up a waiting list so please see her at today's meeting. It gives a full day in London with time to do as you please, even fitting in a matinee theatre performance. This coach departs from Burton Latimer at 08.00 hrs where there is free parking. Contact: Maureen Curd 01832 732 361 The Royal & Derngate Sunday 03 Nov 2013 The Glen Miller Orchestra. Evening 5pm Seats held @ £22.50. Payment due immediately. Christmas Shopping visit to Trentham Village Thursday 07 Nov 2013. Coach only £21.00 pp. The Royal & Derngate Wednesday 13 Nov 2013 The Buddy Holly Story Matinee 2.30pm. Seats held @ £24.00 Payment due to reserve seat. The Royal & Derngate Monday 20 January 2014 Don Quixote the Moscow City Ballet evening seats held @ £28.00 payment due to reserve seat.

N.B. We are introducing a new system for trips and theatres whereby a non-refundable deposit will be asked for when you put your name down. This arrangement has been introduced as we lost quite a lot of money due to cancellations and this measure has become a necessity to prevent further

losses.

Country Matters—We visited Welford during August doing a circular walk of approx. 2 miles during which we saw a tree stump carved into Postman Pat and another with various woodland animals topped off with an owl. We walked passed a medieval fish pond which still has water in it, then crossed over the county boundary the River Avon which flows to Stratford on Avon; here we noticed many different butterflies beside the water’s edge. Our return took us

along the towpath spotting quite a lot of small fish and one small pike plus quite a few narrow boats. When we reached the Wharf Inn, Derek told us a bit about the history of the lime kilns some of which could still be seen at the end of the canal; the waterways network have very good information boards about this and other local canal history. Lunch was enjoyed by all in the Wharf Inn. September’s meeting will have been held by the time this is in print – October is at Broughton. Meet in the Red Lion car park at 10.30 on 10

th October. Look

forward to seeing you there. Contact Derek Warren on 01536 518560 or e-mail [email protected]

Kettering U3A Safe Driving Group—The Safe Driving Group was set up a year ago to help those drivers who would like to improve their driving skills and be more confident on the roads. We do this by developing a systematic method of driving – the same method that is used to train drivers for the advanced driving test. For each member that joins the

Safe Driving Group, we offer a course of up to six drives with each drive being about one hour in length. Our aim is to help to increase the skills and confidence of the driver and to make them safer on the roads. We don’t expect our group members to reach the advanced standard of driving (although they can do that if they wish), but to take their driving to a level at which they feel confident. We’d be pleased to help you to be a safer and more confident driver and there’s NO TEST involved! If you’d like to find out more about the Safe Driving Group, please contact either Roy or Steve.

Musical Circles 1— We began our afternoon with two pieces by Beethoven, the Piano Sonata No.13 and Bagatelle, both played by Alfred Brendel at his Farewell Concerts. A change of mood led us through Bethena and Bink's waltzes by Scott Joplin before listening to a Berlioz overture and some Bizet from his opera "The Pearl Fishers". Bach entertained us with two of his Brandenburgh Concertos and Bruch delighted with his Scottish Fantasy as always. The curtain fell on the superb sound of Rosa Ponselle singing from Bellini's opera 'Norma'. The "B" all and end all of a good programme. Contact Carole Bradbury 01536 516587

Looking at Churches—On a lovely day in August we went to Grafton Underwood church, which is situated in this very pretty Northamptonshire village with a stream running through the middle of it. The church is reached by crossing one of the five bridges over the stream.

During World War Two there were 2,000 USA Army Air force men stationed in Grafton Underwood, which was a tiny village of 200 population. Our guide, Rev.Daniel Foot, told us a lot about the wartime flights & how many men lost their lives at this traumatic time. After the war the USA donated a beautiful stained glass memorial window to the church, depicting a Flying Fortress aeroplane flying over the cliffs of Dover. Our next visit will be to St.John the Baptist church in Corby Old Village on Wednesday September 18th at 2.0pm. The address is Church Walk, Corby NN17 1XF. Apparently there is a new Corby Heritage Centre recently opened in the Old village, so you may like to go there afterwards while in the area. The donation will be £3 this time as we have been promised a cup of tea. October will be Weldon church on Wed.Oct.16th at 2.0pm. There will be no visit in November due to my holiday, & I am pondering over whether any church can cope with us in the week before Christmas. Contact: Janet Clements 01536 507721 or [email protected]

Knit and Natter - Another enjoyable morning was had. There was lots to catch up on as we haven’t all been together for a while, with holidays and grandchildren to look after. We now have quite a few different knitted items hopefully to sell for Crazy Hats at their Christmas Fare. Although our little group is full at the moment, I would recommend anyone to start up another Knit and Natter group. You would be more than welcome to come along and see what we get up

to. It’s very informal and good fun. Contact: Annette Chidwick 01536 523867

Musical Circles 3—The group is now taking its summer break, hopefully restarting in the Autumn Contact: Ray Bradbury 01536 516587

Musical Circles 2— Late in August all the members of the group were able to meet and listened to a programme of music which started with the delightful

and relatively unknown Beethoven’s Piano Sonata no. 13, played by Alfred Brendell at his 2009 farewell concert in Vienna. Then followed the atmospheric March to the Scaffold by Berlioz and the cantata Jauchzet Pott in Allen

Landen by J S Bach, played by the English Baroque Soloists, featuring the soprano Emma Kirkby and the trumpeter Crispian Steel. Before a break for refreshments we heard the ever popular and rousing finale to Bruch’s Violin Concerto no. 1. Suitably refreshed we re-started with Bix Beiderbecke on the clarinet playing At the Jazz Band Ball just to make sure that nobody had dropped off during the interval. We then heard The Mass for Four Voices by William Byrd, sung without any musical accompaniment by the Oxford Camerata. Then Rosa Ponselle delighted us with arias from Norma, an opera by Bellini. We rounded off a delightful afternoon in good company with a violin concerto by Mozart. Bliss. Ray Bradbury Contact: Eileen Mason 01536 725925

Photography Group — The morning weather was not

promising, but by the time we met up at Wadenhoe the rain held off, and we enjoyed a warm if mostly cloudy afternoon. The church was visited and photographed,

and then it was down to the Mill. Plenty of fish in the river, and a brief sighting of a kingfisher made it a worthwhile trip. Unfortunately no one was fast enough to photograph the bird! The afternoon was rounded off with a nice cup of coffee in the gardens of The Old Barn café. We will revisit Titchmarsh Nature Reserve for our September meeting, given reasonable weather. continues to meet on the second and fourth

Wednesday of each month from 2pm to 4pm. We

meet at various members’ houses so there is no

charge. We use the book Pasos 2 which is for second

level students. We are almost at full capacity but could

manage perhaps one or two more members. However,

because of the level our members are at, new students

would need to have a reasonable knowledge of basic

Spanish.

As usual I hope to book Ascoughs in November for our Xmas gathering. I hope it's not too early to be thinking of Christmas!! I shall be taking names at the September meeting. Writers Group — One Life

To me, life is the pages of a book, which had so much to tell, so much to show that when foolish young, I thought so long to reach the middle. So many . . . how many pages still to turn? Too soon it came, that turning-point, when pages past must balance time to come. Fast fell the leaves of life – my lost days . . . Faster, much faster now, till the book is through and closed. Story over, and I gone, and worst grief of all, no more book in this world there to be lived by me. By Diana Ellis

Walking Group - The September walk took place at Pitsford reservoir and a full circuit of approximately 7 miles was made on what was possibly the hottest day of the year, at least it felt like it. Pitsford looked

wonderful just like the Caribbean regrettably no rum punch at the end just a very good lunch at the cafe in the park. Next meeting will be on the 2nd October at the Dukes Arms High St. Woodford where lunch can be pre ordered. Walk starts at 10.15 Contact: Ann and John Kemp on 0153 6761241 or [email protected]

Writers Group— Hey there, person with an idea for a story, a poem, an article, an essay, even a play that

you've been dying to get down on paper, but need encouragement, or with something that you've already written and would like to share! Why not come along to our friendly group? All you need is a love of words and a sense of

humour; a cuppa is provided. We meet on the first Tuesday of each month from 1.45pm to 3.45pm in the Parish Rooms in Kettering: next meeting October 1st. Write on any topic you like in any genre or form. For this month's topic to write to - or ignore! - now the Proms are over for another year, choose a piece of music -long, short, pop, rock, jazz, classical, whatever - that you like (or loathe) or have picked at random. Listen again to it; write whatever comes into your head. For more information or ideas contact: Mary Wildman 01536 741222 or [email protected]
