Foreword

Congratulations on being selected to take part in our latest Breakthrough International Trade Mission to the UAE.

We hope this event gives you everything you need to assess the challenges associated with entering international markets, and to decide whether or not overseas trade is right for your business.

You’ll be able to develop new contacts, expand your network and deepen your understanding of the UAE market, so you can make an informed decision.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are vital to growth and job creation in the UK economy, but their potential is constrained by a lack of support in terms of finance, marketing, operations and sourcing talented people.

Breakthrough aims to bridge this gap by offering ambitious SMEs a suite of support initiatives. These include Growth Capital loans, Masterclasses, access to University interns, live networking events and International subsidised Trade Missions.

Our representatives will accompany you on the mission, and they’ll be able to talk to you about how Breakthrough could benefit your business. Their contact details are at the back of this delegate pack.

I wish you every success on your visit to the UAE.

Anchor Magnets LtdSheffield, UK Keith Simpson, Director

Anchor Magnets’ vast experience in the magnetic industry, supported by their manufacturing ethos and attitude to business make them market leaders. They are innovative and creative in their approach and strive to provide unbeatable solutions and service.

About KeithKeith graduated with a BA (Hons) in Marketing in 1992 and went on to work in the commercial vehicle hydraulics market for over 10 years establishing distribution in markets in Europe, Africa, The Far East and Antipodes. Keith took two years out to undertake a self-build project converting an agricultural barn dating back to the 1820’s. In 2007 Keith joined Anchor Magnets and has developed an extensive knowledge of the use of Magnetic Products in applications for Retail Display & Point of Sale. He is quickly able to identify sales opportunities and create bespoke and innovative solutions using a client centric approach. In 2013 Keith formed part of an MBO team and now is a major shareholder in Anchor Magnets.

Keith is married with two sons, both now at university. Keith was a keen sportsman playing both rugby union and cricket to good levels and after retiring from playing coached juniors teams in both sports.

They have market-leading knowledge and experience of magnet applications in Retail Display, Exhibition Display, Signage and other markets. Their Design & Manufacture services provide their clients with bespoke solutions to ensure perfect results.

Anchor Magnets developed their export business in 16 countries over 20 years and by value, this now represents 40% of their total business. They did this by appointing distributors in each country that could handle their own territory offering established products in general demand to the print industry. The UAE region does not have an indigenous magnet manufacturer and as such they are currently not represented there. Anchor Magnets want to use the Santander Trade Mission to the UAE to examine the local suppliers

of print media to understand the reality of them handling those magnetic materials that they specialise in.

They wish to appoint at least one distributor (maybe one in Abu Dhabi and one in Dubai). The product range would ideally fit into that of a supplier to the local print industry but with technical and marketing support from Anchor Magnets. As with all their distributors, after their material has passed being printed, the vast majority is then used in retail.

Anchor Magnets are looking to meet with companies who supply print media to digital printers as well as large printers working for the retailers.

About JamesJames started his business in 1998 using agricultural equipment from the farm he had grown up on. This quickly progressed to him buying his first new excavator in 2002 and forming the limited company in 2005 since then the business has grown rapidly and evolved to become a £6.9m turnover plant hire and groundworks business with over £15m of plant and machinery assets. James has always prided himself on a “never say never” attitude and providing a high quality and reliable service. As part of his drive to provide new and reliable plant and equipment James has implemented a three year renewal cycle which means J K Ashbrook always has high quality plant and machinery to sell in the used market. James is a true entrepreneur and is always seeking new business opportunities and ways to adapt and evolve the business

A key aspect of their business is extracting maximum profit from sale of their used equipment and they have found this is best achieved by selling it direct to end users. They have in the recent past, made contacts across Europe for sale of used equipment and have had some success in exporting to the USA. They are looking at the UAE as a growth opportunity and a gateway to the surrounding region for export of high quality used equipment such as CAT excavators and bulldozers into a growing trading hub and construction market in the UAE.

J K Ashbrook have a known brand in the UK and a reputation for high quality well maintained equipment which fetches a premium price. They are using the Santander UAE Trade Mission to find trustworthy and reliable trading partners in the UAE to buy quality used equipment either for their own needs e.g. construction or for their own stock e.g. plant dealers, and are as such looking to meet plant dealers and construction companies who are keen to buy quality used equipment such as CAT, Volvo or JCB.

About GirishGirish founded JOY as a single independent store in London, which has subsequently grown to over 30 stores throughout the UK. He has been working in the fashion industry for over thirty years and as a result has amassed great experience in all its sectors. Whether it be wholesale, retail, production or ecommerce he is always eager to learn more and volunteer suggestions regarding the state of the market. More recently he has launched the Louche, Valley of the Dolls and Hymn brands and these now have over 350 accounts worldwide. He sees the UAE as having great potential for the brands and is excited to make new connections during the trade mission.

The JOY brands are targeted at an affluent customer predominantly aged between 25-35 years old and they’ve had significant success combining good quality, stylish products at a commercial price-point. As a result their wholesale arm of the business has grown strongly in recent years with over 350 accounts worldwide in locations such as Europe, Asia-Pacific and the Americas. The Middle East and specifically the UAE is one of the key markets that they have yet to establish strong partnerships in and they believe the Santander UAE Trade Mission presents the potential to create exciting new relationships.

Their objectives for the mission are to establish if there is a potential for a franchise partner for JOY in the region and to seek a permanent distributor for their brands, Louche, Hymn & Valley of the Dolls. They are also keen to develop direct relationship with key retailers.

They would welcome introductions to major retail groups such as Landmark Group; online retailers such as Souq.com, Namshi or other key fashion agencies/distributors.

About AlisonAlison is a chartered accountant with 20 years experience in the NHS, to Board Level. Alison joined Sesame Access three years ago to help develop and expand the Company. Amongst other developments, Alison has worked with UK Trade and Investment over the past year to tap into their training opportunities, knowledge and events, which has been invaluable. Alison is married with a 7 year old son. Aged 24 Alison travelled round the world and spent 3 months looking after Orangutans in Sumatra, Indonesia.

Imagine you are a wheelchair user: You want to get into the National Gallery in London but it is a Grade I Listed Building and there are stone steps in the way to the entrance door. Imagine if you pressed a button and the stone steps moved out of the way to reveal a platform lift to take you to upper landing level. This is a Sesame lift and this type of advanced technology is something they specialise in.

They are a family company, and the lifts were invented by Charlie Lyons, and his son and daughter now run the company. They are passionate about engineering and innovation, and pushing the boundaries of what is possible regarding disabled access. Their company has been operating for 19 years and installed lifts in over 100 buildings in the UK, Europe and worldwide including

Kensington Palace, Sotheby’s Auction House Paris and Qatar National Library.

They are very keen to develop their international presence and believe there potentially is a big market for them in the UAE Region. They hope they can showcase their installation at Qatar National Library to gain further work in the region.

They are looking to develop opportunities through introductions to potential clients as well as investigating potential suppliers of their lifts. At the outset, Sesame would export and fly over to install the lift in the required building and this is how they approached their project in Qatar. They hope to meet with representatives from historic buildings as well as owners of major hotel chains.

He spent 5 years with IBM in Glasgow and London and left to set up his own business importing and selling candles to UK retailers under the Candlepower brand. The company was subsequently sold to Deeko and Jeremy spent some years in consultancy before buying a shareholding in Shearer Candles where he has been the Sales and Marketing Director for some 15 years. He enjoys recreational skiing, tennis and gardening. He is an amateur chef and an active member of Oxford Operatic Society who stage productions in the major Oxford theatres twice a year.

Shearer Candles already export to countries worldwide through a network of distributors and directly to retailers where they do not have an appointed distributor. Countries or regions in which they are represented are Scandinavia, Germany, France, Benelux, Switzerland, Italy, Malta, USA, South Africa, Kuwait, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. The company is recognised for its customer service, quality of product, competitive pricing, contemporary on trend design and fragrance selection. They are members of Sedex, The British Candle Makers Federation and RSPO and hold a Grade A BRC Global Standards Audit Certificate which has been renewed for the past 4 years. While they currently

trade in Kuwait and Dubai through individual retailers, Shearer Candles want to use the opportunity on the Santander UAE Trade Mission in seeking out one or more distributors to stock and wholesale their ranges in the region.

As they are already selling into the market, they know that there is an appetite for the style of products they make and are looking for more trading partners whether discreet buyers or distributors. They would like to meet retail companies who can trade directly with substantial buying power or preferably distributors in the region who can wholesale their products to retailers.

About Hugo Following a spell as sound designer on a number of West End musicals in the UK, Hugo began his career in permanent installations as a project manager for Shuttlesound, at that time one of the UK’s leading professional sound suppliers. During his time with this company he supervised the delivery of many of their largest contracts including Wembley Stadium, Glyndebourne Opera House and Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre. Hugo established Sysco as a subsidiary of Shuttlesound in 1996 and in 1998 executed a management buy out, bringing Sysco into the Longcrest Group, a move designed to give the team supplier independence. Since then he has overseen the development of Sysco as one of the UK’s leading audiovisual solutions providers.

Working on projects for high calibre global clients in the museum, exhibition and sports & leisure industries, Sysco offers comprehensive services from design and specification through engineering and build to technical support. With a firm set of values and commitment to client satisfaction, Sysco has built a reputation for dedication and integrity within the industry.

In addition to previous and current work in the Middle East for Aramco, KAPSARC and SABIC, Sysco has this year successfully completed landmark projects at Milan Expo 2015 for the UK and UAE Pavilions and the Dubai Expo 2020 exhibition space. They see the Santander UAE Trade Mission as an ideal opportunity to gain a detailed understanding of the regional opportunities as they plan their approach to this territory.

They have three key objectives from attending the trade mission: Firstly, to gain a better understanding of the best approach to setting up their operation in the UAE; secondly, to obtain introductions and meetings with potential clients and thirdly to met with complementary businesses. They would be particularly interested in meetings related to Expo 2020, in particular Pavilion designers and members of the Expo organising committee. They are also keen to pursue opportunities within the general UAE cultural sector.

About Charles Charles is the MD and owner of VFE. A 51 year old professional engineer with extensive experience at building businesses across a number of market sectors and geographies, most notably the UK, USA and India. He acquired VFE in late 2014 with acquisition and growth capital funding from Santander, after having sold his previous business in 2013. While his previous company does not compete with VFE, it had a very similar business model in that it has a strong engineering services focus. He is dedicated to growing services businesses and see great potential for VFE as their growth strategy is delivered.

The VFE business has two divisions, each with specialist expertise in key areas :-

VFE Service, offering planned preventative maintenance and reactive emergency call-out services to all manufacturer types of vacuum furnaces. They have an extensive inventory of spare parts and can support their clients on a 24/7 global basis. Their engineers also offer overhaul and upgrade capability which allows the client’s systems to operate at maximum productivity and effectiveness. VFE can also maintain all vacuum pump systems and well as deliver a range of calibration and certification services to international standards.

VFE New Systems, supplying and installing any manufacturer type of new furnace equipment to meet the most complex client requirement. They supply equipment all over the world.

A vacuum furnace is a type of furnace that can heat materials, typically metals, to very high temperatures and carry out material processes under vacuum. This is a process used in high value

added manufacturing. A common use of a vacuum furnace is for the heat treatment of special steel and titanium alloys. Many general heat treating applications involve the hardening and tempering of a steel part to make it strong and tough through service. These systems are used extensively for aerospace components. VFE services are delivered by their own engineers and not a network of franchisees or subcontractors ensuring compliance with the highest standards of quality, health and safety, and aerospace accreditation consents.

The gulf region has experienced significant growth in the aerospace sector and this market is a core to VFE.

VFE are looking for market insight but also potential new customers and partners to assist them in the growth of their services in this territory, in particular component suppliers to the aerospace sector.
