THE STORY OF THE THUNDERBIRD

VICTORY THROUGH HONOUR

In November 1933, the sports department at the Ubyssey staged a contest among students

to select a nickname for the university’s sport teams. At the time UBC sports teams were

simply known as the “Blue and Gold,” or “Varsity.” After narrowing the suggestions from

the student body down to the six best: Corsairs, Grizzlies, Spartans, Thunderbirds, Golden

Eagles, and Musqueams, it was put to a vote. However, when the ballots were counted the

name “Seagulls,” a write-in candidate, was found to be the winner!

Not amused, the Pep Club and Ubyssey staff took matters into their own hands and on Jan.

31, 1934 after a lengthy and spirited debate, the name “Thunderbird” emerged victorious.

However, it was close to 15 years later that the Kwicksutaineuk people of the B.C. west

coast would officially grant permission to UBC to use the Thunderbird name and emblem.

The Thunderbird is a high-ranking, mythical, powerful creature, indigenous to the West

Coast and under whose protection come brotherhood, peace and goodwill.

This event took place on Oct. 30, 1948, at halftime of the homecoming football game at

UBC’s old Varsity Stadium. Over 5,000 fans and students were witness to a ceremony

involving the presentation of a 16-foot high Thunderbird totem to the university by well-

known carver Ellen Neel of Alert Bay, B.C. and Chief William Scow, who at that time was

President of the Native Brotherhood of B.C. and the hereditary chief of the Kwicksutaineuk

people. Under old tribal laws and customs, the dedication by Neel and Chief Scow entitled

the university and its varsity teams to use the Thunderbird name and symbol legally for

the first time, permission and status that are unique honours for any institution or team

and now possessed by UBC.

This totem pole was a gift to the Alma Mater Society and stood in front of Brock Hall from

1948 until the 1970’s. It was then moved to the north side of the SUB and unfortunately

was inadvertently destroyed in 2000. Thankfully, the university through persistence,

passion and partnership over three years, was able to have an exact replica pole carved by

Calvin Hunt and Merv Child of Alert Bay. On Oct. 18, 2004, a re-dedication ceremony was

held as the totem, referred to as the ‘Victory Through Honour” pole, and representing the

unique privilege of having both the possession and the blessing of the Thunderbird, was

returned to its rightful place outside of Brock Hall.

In an impressive and august voice, Chief Scow at that 1948 permission-granting ceremony

stated, “It is yours now, and if you follow the precepts accepted with it, you cannot fail.”

As we adapt and evolve our UBC sports’s model this year, and in the years that follow, there is one anchor that will remain constant. The root of our spirits rests with the Thunderbird and its message applies to all students alike: “Victory Through Honour”.

On behalf of the student-athletes, coaches, staff, and all of UBC, thank you!

SEASON PREVIEW

The UBC women’s volleyball team has won

just about everything there is to win in Doug

Reimer’s 16 years at the helm, but they have a

new objective to shoot for this year, and it’s a

big one. After the program’s sixth consecutive

CIS title win last year tied them with the all-time

championship streaks of Winnipeg (1982-1988)

and Alberta (1994-2000), the Thunderbirds will

have a chance to make history this season as they

look for number seven.

”It is a gratifying feeling, and that’s not the

reason you do it, but it did sink in a bit being in

that same company as those great Winnipeg and

Alberta teams,” Reimer said of his team’s record-

tying title run, which produced the program’s

first multiple CIS Player of the Year award-winner

in Shanice Marcelle, who also took home those

honours in 2010-11, making her the first-ever

player to win the award twice in non-consecutive

seasons.

Marcelle was part of a core group of seniors,

all of whom were key parts of several national

champion teams, that made things run smoothly

day-in and day-out for Reimer and the ‘Birds

thanks to their work ethic and reliability.

”I was really happy for the group last year because

they did a phenomenal job with their level of

professionalism and consistency throughout the

year on the court and off,” said Reimer. “We had

some great battles against teams like Trinity

Western who really pushed us, but I think in the

end we showed with our consistency we really

deserved the title and were deserving champions.”

Losing great players is a regular part of the cycle

for any top college sports program, but this year

will be a particularly big transition for Reimer’s

squad, as they will at least start the season

without six players from last year’s roster.

That group includes two-time MVP Marcelle,

two-time conference All-Star setter Brina

Derksen-Bergen, All-Star middle blocker Jessica

von Schilling, fifth-year libero Danielle Richards,

and second-year outside hitter Begum Pulas. The

‘Birds are also without setter Alana Hansen due to

injury, and libero Kristine Johnson due to a study

exchange commitment.

”It is quite a bit of turnover. That’s a lot of years

of intercollegiate experience, and that skill level

and leadership and maturity takes some time to

The Thunderbirds won their

sixth consecutive national

championship in March.

Page 7: UBC WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL · 2017. 1. 10. · UBC THUNdERBIRdS VOllEYBAll // WOMEN’S 2013 - 14 PROGRAM 7. develop,” said Reimer. ”This is where each group dynamic will be different,

7.UBC THUNDERBIRDS VOLLEYBALL // WOMEN’S 2013 - 14 PROGRAM

develop,” said Reimer. ”This is where each group

dynamic will be different, but it’s more noticeable

when you have more turnover than less.”

That may be a lot of lost talent for a title

contender to try and replace, but the Thunderbirds

are probably as well-equipped as any team to deal

with such heavy roster turnover, and it starts

with the first-Team All-Canadian and two-time

CIS Championship MVP Lisa Barclay. She and

fellow fourth-year Rosie Schlagintweit combined

for over six kills per set last season, and that

production should only increase as they now

form UBC’s one-two punch on the outside with

Marcelle gone.

“We still have a lot of what made us successful

offensively in Lisa and Rosie,” said Reimer. “Lisa

has just continued to develop and her role with

the national team increased last summer. She’s

going to be a major cog for us on the court and

she brings a lot of experience and leadership to

the group. Rosie does the same. Both have great

work ethic and competitiveness.”

Rounding out the hitter ranks are third-year Alissa

Coulter, who averaged about a kill per set last

season off the bench, as well as Juliana Kaufmanis

and Danielle Brisebois, who both performed well

in limited duties as rookies last year.

Reimer also expected rookie left-side Laura

McTaggart to be in the mix right away for the

‘Birds, but the junior national team member from

Alberta has been out recovering from an ankle

injury and has not yet resumed training.

Up the middle, Reimer has two proven veterans

returning to the mix, as well as a talented new

recruit and a redshirt rookie, making it perhaps

the most solidified position on the court after the

personnel changes.

Abigail Keeping averaged about a kill and a half

on .325 hitting last year, giving the ‘Birds a great

offensive option up the middle. She and Mariah

Bruinsma each averaged about one block per set

as well. Behind them will be redshirt freshman

Emily Cicon, and new rookie Nicola Laniuk, who

was the third-ranked BC High Schooler by The

Province, and at 6-foot-3 gives the ‘Birds some

great size on the block.

Another stable position for the ‘Birds is the libero

spot, where well-established starter Briana Liau

Kent enters her fifth year. Second-year Kaitlin

Crawford is a strong backup option, providing

energy and defensive intensity off the bench.

The starting setter job will change hands with

Derksen-Bergen graduating. Although Kirsty

Setterlund originally joined the team as a walk-

on, she has worked her way into a valuable

contributor in each of the last two title runs

and Reimer is confident that she’s ready for the

starting gig.

Backing her up will be a member of the new

recruit class. Alessandra Gentile, who was named

The Province newspaper’s BC High School Player

of the Year last December. She was a right-side

hitter in high school, but Reimer is optimistic

about the versatility she can bring to his offence.

”It’s going to be very exciting with the athleticism

she brings to the position. She’s a very fast learner

and I see her playing a role early on, and it has the

potential to be the multiple rolls as an attacker.

She gives us exciting options not just for this year

but moving forward as well.”

UBC should be set up well to keep the program

among the nation’s elite for years to come with all

the talented young players on the roster. But with

so many personnel changes from last year, many

of those youngsters will have to be ready to make

big contributions now if the ‘Birds want to extend

their title run, and Reimer says that should make

for a thrilling season.

”Those young players will all get significant time

and see their roles increased. That’s what makes

this year exciting but challenging. It’s about not

just where we are in October, and it never really is,

but even more so this year than usual, it’s about

how can we improve and develop as we head into

february.”

CIS COACH OF THE YEAR // 2006, ‘10

A native of Kelowna, B.C., Doug Reimer is beginning his

17th season as head coach of the UBC Thunderbirds. He

has led the program to a CIS record six consecutive CIS

National Championships (2008-13).

2012-13 was another banner year for the Thunderbirds as

they dominated the competition, losing just one game

and perhaps even more impressive, lost just nine sets

in 27 regular season and playoff games. They defeated

Trinity Western in the Canada West final and CIS semi-

final 3-1 and would go on to beat the University of Alberta

3-0 in the CIS final, earning the program it’s sixth straight

national title. The ‘Birds tied a CIS record, joining Alberta

and WInnipeg as the only programs to win six straight CIS

championships.

for a fourth straight year, a UBC player (Shanice Marcelle)

was named the CIS Player of the Year. Marcelle, who won

the award in 2010-11 as well, was also named the CIS

female Athlete of the Year.

In 2011-12, the Thunderbirds finished atop the regular

season standings with a record of 18-2. They were

ranked number one all season long in the CIS Top 10,

but would lose in the Canada West final to Alberta 3-2.

fortunately they still earned a berth to the CIS National

Championships and would eventually get their revenge on

the Pandas, defeating Alberta in the final 3-2.

2010-11 saw the Thunderbirds finish with a 15-3 regular

season record, good for first place in the Canada West

conference, the no. 1 ranking in the CIS, and the Canada

West Championship before UBC brought home their

fourth consecutive national title.

The 2009-10 season could very well be the finest in CIS

women’s volleyball history as he led UBC to a perfect 25-0

record, the no. 1 ranking for the entire campaign, their

second straight Canada West Championship, and third

straight national title. Dating back to midway through

the 2008-09 campaign, the T-Birds won 40 straight CIS

conference or playoff games through their title in 2010-11.

for his efforts, Reimer was named the 2010 CIS and

Canada West Coach of the Year. It is the second time

he has received both honours while at the helm of the

Thunderbirds. The national award was the fifth of his

career, the most of any CIS women’s volleyball head

coach. Reimer was also recognized as the Sport BC Coach

of the Year for his accomplishments in 2010 while the

T-Birds were named Team of the Year at the 45th annual

Sport BC Athlete of the Year Awards presented by TELUS.

He was not the only T-Bird recognized at the national level

as Liz Cordonier was named the CIS MVP, before going on

to claim the BLG Award as the CIS Athlete of the Year, and

Claire Hanna brought home the Libero of the Year award.

Three T-Birds earned CIS All-Canadian status as well.

Under Reimer, UBC has gone to the CIS National

Championship in all but one season, however, it wasn’t

until 2008 that they claimed the national title. In 2007-

08, Reimer guided his T-Birds to the program’s first

National Championships in exactly 30 years with a 3-2

comeback victory over Montreal in the gold medal final. In

2008-09, the T-Birds started slowly and were 7-5 midway

through the season. The eventual national champions

closed their season on a 15-game unbeaten streak and

triumphed in the CIS title game with a 3-2 victory over

conference rivals Calgary.

Reimer played volleyball at the University of Victoria,

where he was a two-time All-Canadian setter and was

honoured with UVic’s top student-athlete award. He was

the head coach of UVic from 1985-87. He then went on

to coach Saskatchewan’s Canada Games team to a gold

medal before leading the University of Winnipeg to a CIS

title in 1992-93.

Reimer came to UBC for the 1994-95 season after his

back-to-back coach of the year seasons at Winnipeg.

He coached for three successful seasons at UBC – left

to become the full-time head coach of Team Canada –

and returned to the Point Grey campus for the 2000-01

season. His major accomplishments with Team Canada

included a second-place finish at the Olympic qualifier for

Salt Lake City and a fifth-place finish at the 1997 World

University Games in Sicily.

During his career, Reimer has been named the CIS Coach

of the Year five times, twice with UBC in 2006 and 2010,

once while at Victoria (1986), and back-to-back with

Winnipeg (1993, ‘94).

Doug and wife, Barbara, a professor of political science at

UBC, live in Vancouver with their daughter, Katie-Anne.

BIRD BACKER

The ‘Bird Backer program is an avenue for alumni,

friends, family and the greater community to be

part of our Thunderbird team. With your generous

contribution we can continue our commitment

to excellence, and turn today’s student athletes

into tomorrow’s community leaders. Great varsity

programs are built with the help of great supporters.

Being a UBC student athlete requires a significant

commitment of time and energy throughout

the entire academic year. As a department, UBC

Athletics is committed to offering our athletes a

great experience where they can focus on academics

and athletics, leaving little time for part-time

employment. The ‘Bird Backer program is one tool

that helps ease the financial burden on our student

athletes. Dollars raised through the ‘Bird Backer

program directly benefit the student athletes.

funds will be utilized for scholarships, international

travel and equipment.

The UBC Women’s Volleyball Program and the

Department of Athletics would like to extend

a warm thank you to all of its donors. for more

SEPtEMBEr 1955

The women of UBC under coach Helen Eckert for the first time on the

Point Grey campus put a varsity volleyball team on the floor.

SPriNg 1961

UBC wins its first Western Canadian university volleyball

championship. Guided by coach Eckert, this 60/61 team features

three-time UBC female Athlete of the Year, Diane Godfrey and UBC

Hall of famer Marilyn Peterson.

SPriNg 1963

The Blue & Gold and coach Eckert achieve their goal by winning their

second Western Canadian university title. This is an era in which

this was as far as one could go in university volleyball. Again it was

Godfrey along with Pat Nichols leading the way.

SPriNg 1965

Coached by Hall of famer Marilyn Pomfret and led by Godfrey

and Maureen fishleigh, UBC win its third Western university

championship. Pomfret is beginning her eleven year career as UBC

head coach which includes two CIS championships.

1972/73 & 1973/74

The Blue & Gold under coach Pomfret win their first two Canadian

university championships. The teams are led by two-time UBC

female Athlete of the Year Maureen fishleigh and 1976 Olympian

Betty Baxter. Baxter in fact, anchors both these national champion

teams – these the early years of university national championships

for women.

1975/76 & 1977/78

One of the more successful runs for UBC women’s volleyball. These

three seasons under coaches Helen Hunt and Dianne Murray see

UBC forge two undefeated regular seasons, win three Canada West

crowns and capture two CIS championships. The 76/77 and 77/78

teams, both national champions, are loaded with All Stars including

Janet Livingston and Dorothy Schwaiger, co-winners of the ’78

Marilyn Pomfret Award.

EArLY 1980S

The era of the Sandy Silver coached Thunderbirds features two of

UBC’s brightest stars; All-Canadian Tara Senft and All-Canadian,

National team member, ’96 Olympian and UBC Hall of fame inductee,

Erminia Russo.

SPriNg 1991

The ‘Birds are in the midst of the Donna Baydock coaching era and

feature four-time Canada West All-Star Sonya Wachowski who is

just named All-Canadian for the second time. Jenny Rauh also stars,

named Canada West All-Star three times and twice All-Canadian.

SEPtEMBEr 1994

The Doug Reimer era begins! The former All-Canadian player comes

to UBC having coached one CIS champion team and three times

honoured as CIS Coach of the Year.

SEPtEMBEr 1997

Coach Reimer and the re-building Thunderbirds are led by All-

Canadians Joanne Ross, Jenny Rauh and Leanne Sander. Reimer is

selected to coach Canada’s National team until the year 2000. filling

in for Doug during the interim is former UBC star and now CIS coach,

Erminia Russo.

SPriNg 1998

After a silver medal performance at the ’97 CIS Nationals, UBC under

CIS Coach of the Year Russo win the 97/98 Canada West title and are

led by All-Stars Barb Bellini, Sarah Maxwell and Pomfret Award winner

Joanne Ross. The next year, again led by Bellini and Maxwell, UBC win

Canada West and a CIS Silver Medal.

SPriNg 2006

UBC win the ’06 Canada West title, paced by CIS Coach of the Year

Doug Reimer, All-Canadians Emily Cordonier and Shelly Chalmers and

CIS Tournament All-Star Stephanie Kurz.

SPriNg 2008

UBC win their first CIS Volleyball Championship in 30 years. The

Thunderbirds are led by Canada West Player of the Year, All-Canadian

and CIS Tournament MVP Carla Bradstock.

UBC WOMEN’S VOLLYBALLTHROUGH THE YEARS

SPriNg 2009

The T-Birds repeat as national champions. With a potent offence

directed by setter Katie Tyzuk and including middle’s Marisa field and

Jen Hinze and MVP Kyla Richey, the Thunderbirds complete the season

with a 15-match winning streak.

SPriNg 2010

With a 25-0 record the star-studded ‘Birds are again CIS champions

and witness a historical season executed by Liz Cordonier. She is

Canada West and CIS women’s volleyball Player of the Year, All-

Canadian, CIS Tournament MVP plus both the May Brown and Marilyn

Pomfret Award winner. This team is Sport BC Team of the Year while

coach Reimer is Sport BC Coach of the Year.

SPriNg 2011

A big moment for UBC and for Shanice Marcelle. Led by volleyball’s

top student-athlete Jen Hinze, Kyla Richey and Marcelle, UBC win

their forth consecutive CIS National championship – one of the

outstanding championship runs in UBC history. Marcelle executes a

season for the ages being named All-Canadian, Canada West and CIS

women’s volleyball Player of the Year, CIS Tournament MVP, Pomfret

Award winner and finalist for the Jim Thompson Trophy as the CIS

female Athlete of the Year.

SPriNg 2012

CIS title. Kyla Richey wins the Mary Lyons Award as national MVP.

She and Rayel Quiring graduate as the only non-swimmers at UBC to

ever win five CIS championships.

SPriNg 2013

UBC lost just one regular season game all season en route to tying a

CIS record, winning its sixth straight CIS title. Shanice Marcelle wins

the Mary Lyons Award as national MVP and BLG Award as the CIS

female Athlete of the Year. Lisa Barclay and Brina Derksen-Bergen

joined Marcelle as All-Canadians.
