D-022 4:3: Transcription of George Pierce Jr. Diary, 1893
Please note that this transcription has not been reviewed for final editing. Please contact
us with any questions.
Preliminary notes by transcriber:
As in other volumes, Pierce has a summary diary in the "Memoranda" and "Cash
Account" pages at the end of this volume, followed by a one-page general evaluation of
what he considered most important about the year. There is also a listing of his
raspberry varieties on the final blank page of this diary.
Starting in January there is an interesting day-to-day account of the establishment of
a large almond orchard from the very start, even before the first trees were put in.
Pierce was on his way to becoming one of the pioneer almond growers of this part of
California.
In February Pierce notes the setting up of his gas engine for pumping water out of
Putah Creek. Feb. 8th bought 5 H. P. gas engine from Best, got the engine to the
ranch on Feb. 25th, etc. building, installing, repairing pump, shelter for engine and
pump in March and April. April 8th got water out on bank from creek for first time,
14th got water to strawberries. Lots of entries about irrigation of nursery, garden,
trees, etc., from here on in. 13 May put 8 inch pulley on pump and greatly increased
flow of water. 3 June ran engine all day on trees and strawberries. Described
irrigation of berries and putting in system of ditches for front yard, 8 June.
Trip to Chicago and Kenosha, September, to where young George Pierce was being
raised by relatives when elder Pierce and his mother were making a start in California;
his old school, etc. (Sept. 12th, etc.)
On the page where Pierce has entries for December 14-17 is a pencil outline of the two
feet of the infant son, Gardner, apparently drawn there by his father.
Note: The "Randall" is a type of harrow. [cf. entries for 9 Jan 1892 and 8 Mar 1904.]
