A Conversation with Two Korean Writers: from book to screen UC Irvine Korean Pop Culture Colloquium Series Wednesday, February 9, 2011 3:00PM-5:00PM, HG 1070, UC Irvine Kim Young-Ha, born in 1968, kicked off his writing career with his first novel, I Have the Right to Destroy Myself. Since then, he has gained a reputation as one of the most talented and prolific Korean writers of his generation for his brooding, yet funny depiction of Korea caught between anachronism and progress. He has published five novels and four collections of short stories. Several of his work have been adapted into major films: A Moment to Remember, a mega-hit film in Japan, and Scarlet Letter, a successful thriller in Korea. His novels and stories have been translated into more than 10 languages. Your Republic Is Calling You is his latest novel to be published in the U.S. Cheon Myung-Kwan, born in 1964, won the much-coveted Munhak-dongne Literary Award with his debut story, Frank and I, and his novel, Whale, respectively in 2003 and 2004. Whale, which spins an wry epic tale about a country girl who transforms into an entrepreneur in the city, still is listed as a steady- seller in all of the major bookstores in Korea. Before making a debut as a novelist, Cheon worked in the Korean film industry known as Chungmuro and wrote several scripts for films such as Gun and Gun and The Great Chef. His recent novel, The Aging Family, heralded by critics, depicts a motley family cast, narrated by a middle-aged son who has been unemployed for the past 10 years since his debut film flopped. This event is co-sponsored with the East Asian Lang & Lit, the Film & Media Studies, and the Academy of Korean Studies.
