$4.3 BILLION: UCIs impact on the area economy as Orange Countys second-largest employer
Underscoring strong community support, private giving to UCI ex-ceeded $80 million in 2011-12. With an endowment valued at $300 million as of June 30, 2012, the University of California, Irvine Foundation spearheads private fundraising efforts for the cam-pus and, with the assistance of alumni and community leaders, helps ensure UCIs future as a world-class research university.

Leaders in Medical Research and Patient Care | $5.6 MILLION: UCIs last 2012 stem cell research award for
work on Alzheimers disease and retinitis pigmentosa from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. In total, UCI has garnered nearly $100 million in CIRM funding.

| SCHOLAR WITH A GLOBAL VIEW: A senior majoring in neurobiology and political science, Soraya Azzawi is dedicated to raising awareness of human rights struggles and the plight of refugees around the world. She has been awarded the 2012-13 UC Irvine XIV Dalai Lama Endowed Scholarship, established in 2004 to recognize students committed to ethical leadership, peace and positive global relations.

BEATING THE ODDS: Fortitude and financial aid have helped senior biological sciences student Carla Plaza toward her goal of becoming a physician. She has benefited from UCs Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan, under which families earning less than $80,000 a year may have all fees covered. About half of UCI students qualify for this program.

Winning Anteater Athletics
Strong finishes in numerous sports have propelled UCI into the nations top five non-football athletics programs in each of the last six years, including runner-up showings the past two years and first place in 2007. Six Anteater teams were in the top-20 national rankings during 2011-12.
