Dear Friends, One of the most difficult questions to answer is “What does UCM do?” Why? Because we do so very much! Because we assure that basic human needs are met—and that tools and support are in place to help people move themselves toward more stable lives. But we also give what can be the most effective tool of all—the hope and knowledge that there is a large community of people who really, truly care about—and work hard for—the success of each and every individual who walks through a door at UCM. Perhaps the better question is “WHO is UCM?” We are social workers, counselors, teachers, fundraisers, accountants, volunteers and funders. We are those with passion and compassion in our hearts. It truly matters to us that this organization moves people from the fear of not having food for today—to the ability to care for themselves and their families tomorrow. You are likely reading this Annual Report because you, too, are UCM. You support the organization through your time, your talent, your treasure. And you know that, for each individual and each family that you help become stronger, our entire community becomes stronger. It is the right thing to do—and it is the smart thing to do. The greatest testimony to UCM is that this commitment lasts for years, for decades. Current and former board members, volunteers, employees and program participants continue to reach out through financial support, helping at holiday time or in so many other ways. What joy it is when a “BEL Baby,” now a teenager or even a young adult, returns to UCM’s Bryant Early Learning Center to say hello to the teachers who impacted his or her life forever. Throughout this report, we are pleased to share with you descriptions of the UCM programs that make crucial impacts on so many lives. Please join us in knowing that, behind every one of these descriptions, are the efforts of tens of thousands, perhaps hundreds of thousands, of people who have been part of UCM since 1969. Emergency Assistance

The Basic Needs program helps people in crisis meet their most immediate and essential needs, as well as gain the resources necessary for long-term self-reliance. Services that Basic Needs provides include emergency food, eviction and utility cut-off prevention, emergency medical and dental assistance, household items, clothing and self-sufficiency skills development.

Basic Needs FY 2011 Accomplishments

• Assisted nearly 9,400 individuals with safety-net services

• Supplied nearly 600,000 pounds of food to more than 7,800 hungry individuals and families

• Prevented utility disconnection for 412 households

• Provided medical or dental assistance to 493 individuals

• Prevented nearly 250 households from being evicted from their homes

Workforce D

evelopment

UCM's Workforce Development Center (WDC) assists area residents in finding or improving their employment through one-on-one career counseling, resume preparation, computer and ESL classes, job skills training and other services. For those with no computer experience, WDC allows job seekers to establish email accounts and learn to research and apply for work online.

WDC FY 2011 Accomplishments • Provided more than 750 clients with services to increase their

employability and job-readiness

• Placed more than 100 high-barrier individuals directly into employment

• Referred clients to 1,148 job leads

• Conducted basic, intermediate and advanced computer training classes that increased the computer literacy of 221 individuals

Transitional Housing

UCM manages three two-year transitional housing programs. These programs truly transform people’s lives, giving them not only a home, but also the support needed to move from homelessness and trauma to independent living. The Journeys Program is designed to help families who are fleeing domestic violence. The Bridge Program works with individuals with mental illness and/or substance abuse challenges. The Community Housing Resources Program (CHRP) moves families from homelessness to stability. Housing Programs FY 2011 Accomplishments • Moved 42 individuals from 15 households out of homelessness and into

permanent housing

• Engaged program participants in monthly life skills workshops

• Provided participants access to appropriate employment, mental health, substance abuse, child care and educational resources

Sacramento Neighborhood Center and Community in Action (CIA) at Creekside Community Center together served fifteen low-income communities. The programs are transformative of individuals and neighborhoods as residents of all ages become engaged in their community, learning to lead and make positive changes that strengthen the environment in which their families live. Neighborhood Development FY 2011 Accomplishments • Engaged more than 1,350 adults and youth living in the Sacramento and

Creekside Village neighborhoods in community programming, leadership development activities and educational opportunities

• Partnered with numerous organizations including Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club, Fort Hunt Elementary School PTA, Destination Smile, Hispanic Institute for the Prevention of Blindness and many others to provide resources, mentorship and health screenings to community residents

Healthy Families Fairfax “My family support

Healthy Families Fairfax (HFF) is an intensive home visitation program that successfully prevents child abuse and neglect in high-risk families. HFF is a creative collaboration of three Northern Virginia nonprofits (UCM, Northern Virginia Family Service and Reston Interfaith) and Fairfax County's Department of Family Services and Department of Health. HFF provides home-based parenting education, health information, and community support to high-risk first-time parents from pregnancy until the child reaches age five.

HFF FY 2011 Accomplishments

• Served 627 at-risk families and ensured that not a single case of abuse or neglect was found

• Provided 1,180 screenings for developmental delays

• Conducted 7,155 home visits to support families in need

The Bryant Early Learning Center provides safe, affordable, developmentally appropriate child care for up to 92 children aged 6 weeks to 5 years. UCM partners with Fairfax County's Bryant Alternative High School in preventing school dropout among teen parents involved in Project Opportunity. The Center is fully accredited by the Council of Accreditation, and it provides an enriching, multi-cultural learning environment that offers parental support to strengthen parenting skills.

Center FY 2011 Accomplishments

• Graduated 15 children from the pre-kindergarten program, all of whom tested ready to begin kindergarten in the fall

• Conducted workshops at which 10 teen moms participated in positive parenting training

• Provided a well-established, positive learning environment for every child through highly stable, multi-cultural, and multilingual staffing

• Served a total of 138 community children

Back Porch Thrift Store

Since 1969, the Back Porch Thrift Store has played an important role in the Alexandria/Mount Vernon Area. The roots of our store began at a local church near Sherwood Hall Lane, where winter clothing items were collected and re-distributed to local residents. Providing clothing, furniture and household goods to those in need in the local community remains at the heart of UCM’s mission.

Many residents of the local community have also come to recognize the store as a delightful place to shop for great values and unique, one-of-a-kind items. All revenues generated from the store help provide much needed funds for UCM’s programs and services. Thank you for your donations!

Back Porch FY 2011 Accomplishments

• Increased annual sales by 10% over FY 2010

• Provided community members in need with household goods, clothing and other items

• Served as a resource recycling center for the local community

• Contributed eight jobs to the local economy

Volunteers are at the heart of the work that UCM does each year. From working as Basic Needs counselors, to participating on our Board of Directors, to teaching classes at the Workforce Development Center, to sorting food for the food pantry and much, much more—UCM volunteers do it all! UCM is deeply grateful to the more than 1,800 volunteers who gave of their time and their talents to help the community in FY 2011. One particularly dedicated group of UCM volunteers is The Friends of UCM. During Fiscal Year 2011, The Friends continued to demonstrate their remarkable dedication and drive, producing phenomenal fundraising events like Capitol Steps and UCM's 2011 Spring Gala. Thank you, Friends of UCM!

• Donated a total of 21,986 hours of their time to UCM—the equivalent of 10 full-time staff positions and $482,368* in salaries

• Raised more than $150,000 through events hosted by the Friends of UCM

Volunteer: It takes all of us to help our neighbors in need.

In Fiscal Year 2011, volunteers dedicated 21,986 hours of their time to helping UCM. There are dozens of volunteer opportunities available. You can help out with stocking the food pantry, sorting clothes at the Back Porch Thrift Store, caring for little ones in our child development center, hosting your own food drive, teaching a computer class, preparing mailings, and so much more! Contribute Financially: Every gift makes a difference.

Every way is the right way to give to UCM. You can donate online, in person, or via check. You can give in honor of a birthday or in memory of a loved one. Some donors give through their employer, others donate stocks or bonds. Other donors set up a recurring monthly or weekly gift, while many donate once a year. We receive grants from foundations and jars of change from children. Supporters can help us to plan for UCM's future success by remembering us in their estate arrangements.

Donate Food: Because hunger in our community hurts us all.

UCM's food pantry distributed nearly 600,000 pounds of food to hungry individuals and families in our community during Fiscal Year 2011. Donations are gratefully accepted at our office from 9:00 am - 5:30 pm Monday through Friday and the first Sunday of every month from 8:30 am - 12:30 pm.
