and hitting 11 of 12 free throws down the stretch sealed the victory. Daniels collected a double-double with 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Shabazz Napier had 19 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists, Boatright had 16 points, and freshman Terrence Samuel added 10 points. VS. MICHIGAN STATE: UConn holds a slight 3-2 edge all-time against Michigan State, including a 66-62 win in their last meet-ing, in the Armed Forces Classic, the 2012-13 season opener at Ramstein Air Base in Germany on Nov. 9, 2012. It was Kevin Ollie’s debut as the UConn head coach. The previous two meet-ings were also on neutral courts as UConn defeated MSU, 70-67, on Nov. 23, 2010 in the Maui Invitational, and the Spartans downed UConn, 73-82, in the NCAA National Semifinals on April 4, 2009, at Ford Field in Detroit. This year, Michigan State is playing their best basketball at the right time, winning its last six games to win the Big Ten Tournament and the first three games in the NCAA tourney. The Spartans have four double-figure scorers, led by guard Gary Harris (16.6) and forward Adreian Payne (16.5). The other two are forward Branden Dawson (11.4) and guard Keith Appling (11.4). Guard Denzel Valentine (7.9) is the fifth starter. The top reserves are guard Travis Trice (7.5), forward Kenny Kaminski (5.1) and forward Matt Costello (4.2). The Spartans outscore opponents by 10.4 ppg, outrebound them by 5.2 rpg, shoot .476 as a team, and hold opponents to .398. The teams have played two common opponents -- both defeated Harvard, and UConn defeated Indiana, while MSU topped Indiana twice.

UCONN AT MSG: Other than its home courts, there is no venue where UConn has played more games than at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Huskies have an overall record of 60-52 (.538) in games it has played at Madison Square Garden and the Huskies have won nine championships at MSG. Under Hall of Fame Coach Jim Calhoun in his 26 years, the Huskies’ re-cord at the Garden was 51-35 and they won eight championships in the building --- the 1988 NIT Championship, as well as BIG EAST Tournament Championships in 1990, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2004, and 2011. Under Coach Calhoun, UConn was 8-8 in 16 regular-season games against St. John’s, 35-19 in BIG EAST Tournament games, and 8-8 in other tournament play there. Under second-year Coach Kevin Ollie, UConn is 3-2 at Madison Square Garden. Last season, UConn was 0-2 in the building, bow-ing to North Carolina State, 69-65, in the Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 4, 2012, and to St. John’s, 71-65, on Feb. 6, 2013. This year, the Huskies captured championship of the 2K Sports Classic at MSG, topping Boston College, 72-70, on Nov. 21 and defeating Indiana, 59-58, on Nov. 22, then defeated Iowa State, 81-76, in the NCAA East Regional semifinal on March 28.

UCONN AS A NO. 7 SEED: UConn is a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the seeding process began in 1979. In UConn’s 19 NCAA appearances since 1979, the Huskies have been a No. 1 seed five times, a No. 2 seed six times, a No. 3 seed once, a No. 4 seed once, a No. 5 seed three times, a No. 9 seed twice, and a No. 11 seed once. The Huskies are only the ninth No. 7 seed to ever reach the Regional final and only one No. 7 seed (Virginia in 1984) has reached the Final Four.

SCOUTING THE HUSKIES: UConn is coming off an 81-76 vic-tory over No. 3 seed Iowa State in the East Regional semifinals of the 2014 NCAA Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Huskies broke a 12-12 tie on a three-pointer by Ryan Boatright with 13:07 to go in the first half, and led the rest of the way. The Huskies hit seven three-pointers in the first 15 minutes on their way to a 36-26 halftime lead. Sparked by ju-nior DeAndre Daniels and a togh defense, the Huskies widened the gap to 49-32 and held a 61-45 lead with 7:27 remaining. Iowa State fought back to within 67-63 with 2:18 to go, but a cruciual three-pointer by Niels Giffey gave UConn some breathing room

The last time the Huskies had more than one 1,000-point scorer on the same team was in 2008-09, when that UConn team had four -- Jeff Adrien, A.J. Price, Jerome Dyson, and Hasheem Thabeet.

20 OFF THE BENCH: With 20 points against UCF on January 11, freshman Amida Brimah became the first UConn player under Coach Kevin Ollie to come off the bench and score 20 points. The last UConn player to accomplish that feat was Ryan Boatright, who came off the bench to score 23 against Arkansas on December 3, 2011, under former Coach Jim Calhoun. Boatright was the 14th player to come off the bench in Calhoun’s 26 seasons at UConn to reach the 20-point mark in a game. The other players in this group were Rashad Anderson (11 times), Brian Fair (9 times) , Ben Gordon (5 times), Ray Allen (4 times), Johnnie Selvie (4 times), Phil Gamble (3 times), Doug Wiggins (3 times), Kemba Walker (2 times), Jamal Coombs-McDaniel (2 times), John Gwynn (2 times), Tony Robertson (1 time), Charlie Villanueva (1 time) and Rashamel Jones (1 time).

RECORD WATCH: Through 37 games, the Huskies are making a run at a few UConn season records. The record for highest 3-point shooting percentage is 40.8 percent in 1995-96. Currently, the Huskies are shooting 39.4 percent. The UConn record for highest foul shooting percentage is 78.2 percent in 1980-81, which was also No. 1 in the country. Currently, the Huskies are shooting 76.9 percent from the foul line. The highest per game average of three-point attempts stands at 17.3 in 2010-11. UConn’s average so far this season is 18.6. The highest per game average of three-pointers made is 7.4 in 1995-96. Currently, the Huskies are averaging 7.32 three-pointers per game.

CONSECUTIVE GAMES: UConn sophomore Phillip Nolan owns the longest current streak of games played by a UConn player with 46 consecutive games. Senior Shabazz Napier has the current record for consecutive starts with 38.

PERCENTAGE LEADER: With 49 wins in his first 67 games as head coach, UConn coach Kevin Ollie’s .731 winning percent-age is the highest of any UConn coach who coached more than 20 games. Ollie is the only UConn coach to win 20 games in his first season and 49 games in his first two years.

MOST GAMES: With today’s game against Michigan State, senior Shabazz Napier will set the UConn record for most games played with 141. In addition, Napier’s 661 points so far this season is the 11th high-est-scoring season in UConn history.

STARTING NOTESUConn has started nine different players and used 10 different starting lineups this season, and has only one player, Shabazz Napier, who has started every game. Napier and Niels Giffey are the only UConn players this season to score in each of the Huskies’ 36 games. Ryan Boatright has scored in each of the 35 games he played, while DeAndre Daniels has only been held scoreless once in the 34 games he has played. The breakdown is as follows:

Kevin OLLIEHead Coach

2nd Year as HC; 4th year at UConnIn just his second season as the

head basketball coach at the Uni-versity of Connecticut and only his fourth year in the profession since retiring from the NBA, Kevin Ollie has already established himself as one of the rising young coaching stars in the college game.

Ollie accepted a huge responsi-bility on Sept. 13, 2012, when he was named the 18th head coach in the history of UConn men’s basketball, replacing legendary Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun.

By the end of the 2012-13 sea-son, however, it was evident that Ol-lie was more than ready to meet the challenge.

With only two seasons of coach-ing experience after joining Calhoun’s staff as an assistant in 2010-2011, Ollie quickly embraced the opportu-nity to lead the storied UConn pro-gram.

Despite a roster depleted by transfers and early NBA entrants, and a team that was ineligible for any postseason play due to academ-ic shortcomings in years long past, Ollie guided the Huskies to a 20-vic-tory season, a feat no other UConn coach had ever accomplished in his first year.

The Huskies finished 20-10, ex-tending UConn’s streak of 20-win seasons to three straight, five in the last six years, and 14 in the last 16 years, as well as extending its streak of winning seasons to 26 in a row. UConn posted a 10-8 mark in the difficult Big East Conference. At sea-son’s end, Ollie’s efforts were recog-nized by Collegeinsider.com, which selected him to receive its Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year Award, given to the top Division I minority

coach, who produced excellent re-sults despite difficult or adverse con-ditions.

Ollie raised eyebrows with the season’s very first game, upsetting 14th-ranked Michigan State, 66-62, in the Armed Forces Classic at the

Ramstein Air Base in Germany. The season also in-cluded victories over ranked teams Notre Dame and Syracuse, and five wins in overtime, a school record.

On Dec. 29, 2012, less than a dozen games into

his first season as head coach, Ol-lie was awarded a new contract that will run through at least the 2017-18 season.

Ollie’s UConn history --- which be-gan in the fall of 1991 when he re-ported to school as a freshman from Los Angeles, continued through four successful seasons, including two as a Husky team captain, and resumed when he returned to join Calhoun’s coaching staff following a 13-year NBA career --- has come full circle. He may have only served two sea-sons as an assistant on Calhoun’s staff, but possesses a wealth of basketball knowledge after learning from some of the finest teachers to ever coach the game, including Cal-houn, Chuck Daly, Larry Brown, and George Karl.

“After 13 years in the NBA, Kev-in’s got a PhD in basketball,” Calhoun said as he passed the torch to his former point guard. “He’s a great basketball man and an even better person. I’m very proud of him.”

Ollie made a decision about UConn more than 20 years ago, coming out of Crenshaw High School in Los An-geles. Playing on some of Calhoun’s finest teams during the mid-1990s,

“After 13 years in the NBA, Kevin’s got a PhD in basket-ball.”

Ollie was a four-year starting point guard and a two-time captain.

He played in 124 games for the Huskies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 assists. A third team All-Big East pick, his 619 assist total still ranks third on UConn’s all-time list. He graduated in 1995 with a Communications degree.

But Ollie was far more concerned with team statistics than individual ones. During his four-year UConn ca-reer, the Huskies had a record of 92-33, 51-21 in the Big East Conference and made three NCAA Tournament appear-ances. During Ollie’s last two seasons, when he served as a team captain, UConn’s record was 57-10 overall and a dazzling 32-4 in the Big East, capturing two Big East regular-season champion-ships, and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, respectively.

Yet it was after his UConn career that Ollie was most impressive, display-ing unmatched perseverance, intestinal fortitude, and a never-say- die attitude as he fought his way through years in the Continental Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA.

Once there, Ollie would simply not

give up his dream, signing a series of 10-day and one-year contracts, deal-ing with trades and roster cuts.

Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earning a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moral fiber, impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. His perseverance finally paid off with a multi-year contract from the Cleveland Cavaliers, who also wanted Ollie to mentor a young LeBron James about acting as a pro-fessional. Oklahoma City brought Ollie in to do the same for Kevin Durant. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities and learned from 15 differ-ent NBA coaches.

Ollie couldn’t have had a more suc-cessful debut season to his coaching career than in 2010-11, as he helped guard Kemba Walker produce one of the most spectacular individual sea-sons in UConn history in leading the Huskies to the program’s third nation-al championship. The 2011-12 season culminated in another NCAA appear-ance and another UConn guard, Jer-emy Lamb, drafted as an NBA lottery

selection. Born in Dallas on Dec. 27, 1972, and

raised in Los Angeles, Ollie resides in Glastonbury with wife Stephanie, who is also a UConn grad (1997), and their two children, son Jalen (born 6/22/96) and daughter Cheyanne (born 2/6/01).

“Kevin Ollie, he was a game-changer for us. He might not say it, but I think he changed the whole culture in Oklahoma City ... just his mind set, pro-fessionalism, every single day. And we all watched that, and we all wanted to be like that. It rubbed off on Russell (Westbrook), myself, Jeff Green, James Harden. And then every-body who comes through now, it’s the standard that you’ve got to live up to as a Thunder player. And that started with Kevin Ollie.”
