To Love Like Jesus
With Valentines Day (February 14) coming, our thoughts turn to
love.So, what does it mean to love like Jesus? In Matthew
22:37-40
(CEB), Jesus had been asked about the greatest commandments, and
hereplied, You must love the Lord your God with all yo ur heart,
with all your being, and with a
mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second
is like it: You must love
neighbor as you love yourself. All the Law and the Prophets
depend on these two commands
There is something implicit in that second commandment-to love
your neighbor as you lovself. It implies that you love yourself. At
first glance, we might say we all love ourselves. Howknow those who
have served God and others until they reached the point where they
have nothinggive. We have heard of preacher burnout-of Sunday
School teachers giving up-of people stayfrom church because they
have no more to give. Could it be that when that happens, we have
folove ourselves? That we have become so caught up in loving God
and others that we have forgocare of our own body, mind, and
spirit?
In the New Testament we find Jesus spending time alone i n
prayer, leaving the crowds behthey were clamoring for attention,
and going to Temple and Synagogue to worship. This year, letto
loving God, loving others, and taking care of ourselves (body,
mind, and spirit)!
