It is said an apple a day keeps the doctoraway, but in KwaNobuhle it is rather, a

cupcake a day brings hope all the way.

“Yes, we want to change mindsets. We wishto bring hope. And we strive to promote en-trepreneurship and community develop-ment, challenging the youth not to be dis-mayed by unemployment,” said AthenkosiMsutwana, the co-founder of Cupcakes withHope.

An average of 40 cupcakes a day are soldand since establishing Cupcakes with Hopeduring March 2016, thousands of cupcakeshave been enjoyed, particularly by learnersat local schools.

The initiative is run by six young men whostrive to bring about change in their commu-nity through the selling of a variety of fla-voured cupcakes. The men are LikhayaNkohli, Siyabulela Mbalane, Lunathi Yoli,Sinethemba Magxaki, Athenkosi Mgutwanaand Mbongeni Mdashe.

“We bake from home in Jibiliza Street anddeliver and sell these cupcakes at localschools. There are hurdles along the way, butwe are determined to utilize that in assistingus to grow our initiative into a successfulbusiness.

“The current cupcake campaign runs untilAugust with the aim to generate funds, to as-sist the five best Grade 12 learners of localhigh schools, in paying application fees tofurther their education,” said Athenkosi.

This campaign includes 8 high schools inKwaNobuhle, meaning they wish to assist 40top learners from the area to be able to further

their studies. In achieving the goal of Cup-cakes with Hope, they wish the public to sup-port them by also placing cupcake orders.

“No help is considered too small. We appre-

ciate any help as we are trying our best to helpothers. We feel that our initiative is to encour-age unity and to bring hope for a better fu-ture,” said Athenkosi.

Johan (62) en Andrew Koertzen (68) is doodin ’n brand in ’n plaashuis in die Jansenville-distrik.

“Ek het my broers in daardie brand verloor– nie my neefs nie. Om te dink ek sou dalksaam met hulle daar gewees het,” het Koert-

zen gesê.Die Koertzen-broers het glo geslaap toe ’n

deel van die huis Vrydagoggend omstreeks01:00 op die plaas Witrugberg, waar hulletuis was vir ’n jaguitstappie, begin brandhet.

Volgens ao. Pierre Harmse, ’n polisie-woordvoerder, het Johan in die huis dood-gebrand. Andrew het Saterdag in die DoraNginza-hospitaal in Port Elizabeth aanbrandwonde beswyk.

“Hulle het met Johan se buurman en jarelange vriend, Billy Eyre, die plaas besoekom te gaan jag,” vertel Hyla, Rudi se vrou,terwyl haar man verslae voor hom uitstaar.

“Billy het glo wakker geword vandie hondse getjank. Hy het opgespring en Johan enAndrew probeer wakker maak. Johan konglo nie wakker skrik nie. Andrew het, soosek verstaan, in ’n brandende kamer inge-hardloop toe hy probeer vlug.”

Die vermoede is dat Johan toe reeds aanrookinaseming beswyk het.

“Ons het as kinders saam hier in dieSwartkopsrivier geswem en gehengel. Diejag is maar deel van ons – ons het in die oudae nie gewere gehad nie, maar ons kettieshet oortyd gewerk,” onthou hy. “Ek het netverlede week vir Johan gevra wanneer vathy my saam. Dis vreemd dat die twee sosaam-saam, ’n dag uit mekaar, sou sterf. Ekkan dit nie glo nie.”

Johan se vrou, Martha, het gister in hulwoning op Despatch gesê sy weet haar mansou op dié plaas wou sterf as hy ’n keuse ge-had het.

“Net nie só nie. Hy het altyd gesê ons moet

sy as op die Witrugberg-plaas, waar hy ge-reeld met Billy gekuier het, strooi as hy wegis. Dis so vreemd. Hy het verlede jaar wonder-baarlik sy kanker oorkom en kyk nou.”

Nico Eyre, die plaaseienaar en Billy seseun, het gesê dit is onduidelik wat die brandveroorsaak het. “Dit bly ’n raaisel. Daar is nieeens elektrisiteit indaardiehuisnie; ditmaaknie sin nie.”

Eyre het gesê hy laat dit aan die polisieon-dersoek oor.

“My pa het weggekom met net ’n gebreektetoon en geringe beserings, maar Andrew enJohan se dood is baie moeilik,” het hy hart-seer gesê.

Volgens Harmse sal die polisie eers volgen-de week ’n verslag ontvang oor wat moontlikdie brand veroorsaak het.

An electronic waste recycling start-up, basedin the Propella Business Incubator, aims to beone of the first companies on the continent tofully recycle electronic waste.Propella is a partnership between the Nel-

son Mandela Metropolitan University, the In-dustrialDevelopmentCorporationand thepri-vate sector and is fo-cused on generatingrenewable energy.“Should we receive

our required fundingwe will be the firstelectronic waste plantin Africa to have anend-to-end zero-to-landfill facility,” saysEnrico Vermaak ofeWaste TechnologiesAfrica.“Electronic waste” is defined as “anything

with a plug” being thrown away, such as dis-carded computers, office electronic equip-

ment, entertainment device electronics, mo-bile phones, television sets and refrigerators.According to the minister of environmental

affairs, Edna Molewa, electronic waste makesup five to eight percent of municipal solidwaste in South Africa and is growing at a ratethree times faster than any other form of

Dié kunswerk is geskep deur Quetin Bru-intjies (18), wie verlede jaar sy skoolloopbaanby Bergsig voltooi het.Luana Bester, kunstenaar as-ook kunson-

derwyser by Bergsig sê, “Quetin het ’n fynaanvoeling vir kleur en toonwaardes. Systerkte is sy leerbare gees en dit maak vanhom ’n suksesvolle kunstenaar.”

Die olieverfskildery in Bergsig se klubhuisbestaan uit drie panele met kenmerkendeUitenhage uniekhede, inmekaar vervleg metinteressante verftegnieke.Quetin het uniekhede van Uitenhage en

omgewing vasgevang in olieverf. Daar isturksvye, aalwyne, die Hanekamberg, ’nVolkswagen Kewer, treine en ook beelde vanBergsig.“Ek het begin met die lug en die Hanekam-

berg. Maar soos die landskap verander moesek die lug die heeltyd aanpas sodat die kleuremooi balanseer,” sê Quetin, wat reeds in sylaerskooldae by Sonop in kuns presteer het.“JuffrouLuana isamazing. Haar aanmoed-

Two clubs were recorded by Hans Botha on both the4th and 7th holes, and Ernie Dyer on the 7th hole.Ben Viljoen earned himself the Teddy Bear awardand Mike Liddiard walked away with the whiskeydraw.

Entires are awaited for the 2016 Nelson Man-dela Bay Train Race, the iconic and uniqueman versus machine biathlon relay racewhich will be held on Sunday, October 2.Re-introduced in 2014 in a new and exciting

format between Port Elizabeth and Uiten-hage, this year’s Train Race is expected toattract over 250 teams comprising 5 runnersand 1 mountain bike cyclist as the teams take

on a Metrorail train over a distance of 38km.This year sees the addition of an individual

category to the eventwhich already caters forcompany, school, social and club teams.The route is divided into 6 stages with the

race starting from the Port Elizabeth railwaystation.Last year’s race saw the top 3 teams all beat-

ing the train with Uitenhage’s Gamble

Pharmacy beating the IAC Investments team.Once again the Gamble Pharmacy team

who are dominating the Town Lodge NightRelay monthly winter series will be startingas race favourites.Entry fees for the TrainRace event are R700

for a corporate team, R600 for a Social Team,R500 for club teams, R400 for school teams andR200 per individual. Spectator Train tickets

are R60 each.Through this event, the organisers draw
